Ordered chicken tikka masala and an order of plain naan. I eat with my eyes first and was like eh when i saw it. I was disappointed because it lacked flavor and the chunks of chicken was very dry. Ive never had chicken like this almost similar to chunks of (artificial) beef but DRY and tough. The sauce/gravy was very bland the only reason why i ate 75% of it was because i was starving and it was nearby. I am a regular at this fantastic Pakistani. Good food and excellent staff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I read some of the reviews and see that many complain that this place is dirty.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While I always rate restaurants strictly on food quality and taste, this isn't a hipster or fine-dining restaurant that provides the desired ambience and high-end service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a simple cafe that is clean and affordable, where you can have a delicious, cooked meal for $12 or less, for example, Daal + Plain Naan.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So what about the food? 4 stars - excellent food, although it's still not the best I've had. Nonetheless, with the dearth of good Indian/Pakistani food in the South Bay, Famous Tandoori is one of the better Desi restaurants in the area. Since I eat here regularly, I have tried almost all the items on their menu, including the specials. For this review, I will focus on my top 5 favorite dishes here. Rice Pulao - 5/5. This is like the lighter version of Rice Biryani, while still retaining a good complexity. This is a specialty dish at Famous Tandoori and is only available on Friday. The dish comes with a lamb shank and has a sufficient portion for 2 people. Lamb Tikka Masala - 3.5/5. Thick curry made with tomato puree, cream, and spices. The cut of meat they use is inconsistent. Sometimes, I get cuts of meat that give rich flavor and tender texture. But there are times when the meat is tough and too gamey - not that gamey flavor is undesirable, but too much of it may not taste good. Nonetheless, this dish is a flavorful stew. Aloo Gobi - 3.5/5.  A curry dish with cauliflower and potatoes. Great flavor. My only gripe is the copious amount of ghee.  Chicken Karahi 4/5. This is a relatively thin chicken curry. Good chicken flavors. I love that they garnish the dish with fresh ginger slices, which complement it very well. Haleem - 4/5. Famous Tandoori is a Pakistani restaurant that serves beef dishes. And Haleem is one of those interesting Persian dishes that has been adapted in Pakistan. It's a dish that mashes wheat, barley, and lentil grains with beef and spices. So, the dish is more akin to spiced porridge than to a stew or curry. I love that they garnish the dish with fresh green jalapenos, fried shallots, and fresh ginger slices. Other good dishes to order: Kheer - Indian/Pakistani rice pudding dessert. Aloo Palak - Creamed spinach and potatoes cooked with spices. Lamb Briyani - Can't spell Pakistani cuisine without a good lamb briyani. read more

The entrance to parking for famous tandoori is directly underneath the giant sign. I accidentally parked in the neighboring parking lot and it's much less inviting there. A couple things I learned walking in here on a whim, the curry doesn't come with a side, you'll need to order rice or naan on the side. I recommend the garlic naan which had the perfect texture. The green sauce is absolutely delicious. I'm not sure what it is but I am sure I can probably just drink it as is and wash it down with naan. I got the lamb tikka which tasted great. The chicken briyani was the most notable dish because it's super hard to find really good biryani but this place nailed it. The chicken tikka masala and garlic naan was great too. Ordered lamb biryani for takeout here and they decided to substitute it for chicken biryani without giving us a heads up. Just wrote a note on our order like that was a perfectly sane thing to do... What if I was allergic to chicken? How hard is it to call the customer and ask to cancel or replace it with a substitute of my actual choice. Lamb was also $2 more expensive so they just pocketed the difference. Not a single add on to make up for it. What the hell is this restaurant thinking?! Allergies are a serious issue and worthy of a report to the health department. The worst part is the food was bad. I'd be willing to overlook it if the substitution was better, but the chicken was unsurprisingly dry and flavorless. I hate to admit, but I haven't eaten much Indian cuisine yet and boy do I regret it. Famous Tandoori gave me a fabulous reminder as to what flavors I have been missing. It's located along Pacific Coast Highway and can be easily missed driving by. They have a parking lot behind if you are worried about parking. You can tell it's family owned once you stepped inside with its homey vibe, and they even offer a free cup of chai with every visit. The servers are very nice and were able to offer some great recommendations. Garlic Naan: Fresh, warm, and buttery. I could have ordered at least 5 of these and just ate this. Chicken Tikka Masala: Great recommendation and entry to Indian food, you can ask to adjust the spice level. It was full of flavor and goes great with rice or Naan. Despite having three signs displayed in front of their building, it's really easy to miss because it's located on PCH, unless you happen to stop because of the nearby traffic lights. They even have lunch specials that are available from Tues-Thurs and other daily specials that you don't want to miss. They have plenty of indoor space and even have a gorgeous outdoor patio seating. Unfortunately, it was quite hot that day so I opted to sit indoors. || L O C A T I O N / P A R K I N G || -Closest cross streets are PCH and Appian Way -Parking is available in the rear. You want to turn into the entrance as soon as you pass by the nail and hair salon. We passed by it thinking that we could just park in the next available entrance but that was not parking for that plaza. -Came on a Friday at noon and the lot was probably 70% full. || F O O D / D R I N K S || Mango Lassi ($4.00) - So smooth and delicious. Not too sweet! Potato Samosa ($4.00/4pcs) - So crispy and pairs super well with their green sauce! Theirs was freshly made and the most fluffy naan that I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and make sure to order extra because one order is not going to be enough for two people. I made sure to order one naan for each person in my party. Special Chicken 65 ($15.99) - Decided to try something new and saw that many fellow Yelpers posted about this. It's chicken mixed with tangy and garlic sauce. The tanginess isn't too strong which was perfect for me. It pairs extremely well with rice or naan. Definitely recommend it if you're looking to try something new. Lamb Pulao (FRIDAY SPECIAL $14.99) - Our server recommended this daily special dish and since we were a fan of lamb, we decided to go for it. The portion is extremely generous. You can order one for yourself or share with at least one or two other people. Since it comes with a large portion of rice, I ended up saving some of that rice to go with my chicken tikka masala. Usually with lamb, there is a certain smell/odor that I don't like if it's not cooked properly but I was so pleasantly surprised that I could barely distinguish that odor. Great food with generous servings for a great price! If you're new to Pakistani food I recommend the kebab roll! It goes great with the green sauce. Pleasantly surprised to find this cozy corner to satisfy Friday night indian cuisine craving! Dine-in service was wonderful, staff was proactive and friendly to check in with us on our seating preferences and provided personal recommendations upon ordering. Food came out quickly with the place partially occupied by guests. The interior was clean (A grade) and the color scheme/decorations did a good job taking you away from the hustles and bustles of everyday city life. The Garlic Naan smelled sublime, I keep repeating to my fiancé about how appetitizing and rich it smelled. The Chicken Samosas were not dry at all, crispy on the outside and juicy within. The lamb was tender and the tikka masala sauce perfectly blended with the fibers of the meat (chef's kiss). Not really sure what Special Chicken 65 consiste ld of, but it tasted good so I assumed the specialness came from the store's own house interpretation of the dish.
