A cozy restaurant that specializes in elevated fried rice--what more could you want! I've been to Fan Fried Rice close to 10 times and each visit has been lovely and so delicious. I usually get the killer Taiwanese sausage fried rice, but I've branched out and to a few others and have never regretted it. But I always come back to the sausage, my god is it good. And the popcorn chicken as an app always hits, too. FFR always has great service and a warm and welcoming atmosphere to boot. I've visited this place twice, and unfortunately, my second experience completely changed my opinion. The first time, the food was good--flavorful and fairly priced. However, today was the opposite. The restaurant was cold and nearly empty. After asking the bartender about drink options, I ordered two sparkling sakes and a couple of appetizers. The sake arrived flat. When I brought it up, the bartender spoke to the chef/owner, who refused to replace it. Since our food hadn't come out yet, we decided to leave and not pay for drinks we didn't consume. The chef/owner responded with a rude attitude, questioning what he was supposed to do with the drinks, and even told us not to come back as we were leaving. There was NO miscommunication in what was conveyed from me to the owner or bartender. The BARTENDER said the sake was sparkling. I asked her flat out and she responded that it was sparkling. So please don't lie and say it was a miscommunication. The OWNER then showed me the bottle, which was in a completely different language, that I do NOT read or speak. I was thorough in my asking of questions. I was never rude to the bartender, the owner came out extremely aggressive and short. With that being said, that level of service is unacceptable. Our server was very nice and the chef in the back was great when he double checked on my allergies. We got Melt Turnip Cake, Typhoon Squid, and the wagyu fried rice. Melt Turnip Cake - it's a good take on a tuna melt with cheese over scallop and turnip. Decent but personally I'll stick to the traditionally style of turnip cake. I felt the cheese covers the deeper flavors of a turnip instead of enhancing it. Typhoon Squid - this was crisp and delicious. I love the flakes it came with. I was invited by a friend to join her for an event. Always open to try new spots I was happy to join. Fan Fried Rice Bar is a very unassuming small spot on the corner of Driggs, you might miss it if you are not paying attention. We had 7pm reservations, I arrived early and lucked up and found parking right across the street on a lovely Friday. (Now that's BK Love!) Once we settled and perused the menu, we went with popcorn chicken as the appetizer and glass of wine and sake to start. The popcorn chicken was flavorful, well seasoned and pipping hot. It paired nicely with the glass of wine I ordered and the drizzle of sriracha, I added. For the Fried Rice we ordered the Spicy Mango Shrimp and the seasonal fried rice of Sha Cha Beef. The seasonal fried rice consisted of flat iron steak, mushroom, chili, and bullhead barbecue sauce. I didn't try my friend's rice because I do not eat red meat. I ordered the Spicy Mango Shrimp which contained bell peppers, chili, mango and of course shrimp. The rice was tasty but lacked the spice I was expecting. On the menu there are options for an array of different fried rice & protein options as well as a few small plates and beverages. Overall a nice introduction to Taiwanese inspired street food and a local business that I may otherwise not have been aware of. I made a reservation through resy but was over an hour late due to the road closures for the half marathon. I called ahead to let them know and they were so nice about it because their lunch hours weren't fully booked that day. I was feeling adventurous and didn't do my research beforehand aka look at the menu so I had no idea that all the entrees were fried rice dishes! I was highly intrigued because they must feel very skilled in making fried rice to be this bold! I ended up ordering the night market taiwanese sausage and popcorn chicken for the appetizers. The taiwanese sausage was nice and juicy but the cost was hefty in comparison to Taiwan's night markets. The spring onions sandwiched between the sausage made a big difference! The popcorn chicken had a lot less breading than bubble tea/snack shops, and the quality was a lot better than the places that I usually get it from. I especially liked the fried basil leaves that topped the dish. But again, the price tag was a turnoff. It was hard to pick the fried rice dishes because they all sounded interesting. We ended up getting the sha cha beef, which is seasonal fried rice, and numb numb pastrami. Our server kindly put in our request to make it a tiny bit spicy. The sha cha beef was just ok, which was kind of disappointing for $19! The numb numb pastrami was soo addicting because of the spices. The flavor profile was so much better than the sha cha beef. Not sure I'd necessarily go too out of my way for this, but I live around the area and can definitely see myself coming back. The rice servings are a pretty decent size and can easily be shared between two people. We got: -Shrimp Ball appetizer: really flavorful. Definitely the best thing we ordered. -Taiwanese Sausage Rice: this was my favorite out of the two rice dishes we got. By far, the best thing here was the pork chop fried rice - hands down the best pork chop I've had in NYC and London combined. The batter was crispy but not dry and well seasoned. The pork chop itself was so incredible juicy and tender. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The pork chop alone makes this a 5 star establishment. Other items were good too, but not as stand out. Pastrami Fried Rice - the rice had the nice char/wok taste that you only get with high heat wok cooking. It was tasty but had a little too much oil for my taste (which would collect at the bottom of the bowl). Taiwanese Sausage was sweet and savory. Plump and juicy, it was a nice appetizer. I've walked past here many times so decided to give it a try. I think at this time of year it was a bit too hot to be able to appreciate the open windows since I do prefer some air conditioning indoors. Also where we sat was a bit loud heating dishes being washed in the kitchen for a good portion of the meal. I will say though that the food here was all very tasty and exceeded my expectations. The vegetable cold noodle salad was flavorful and refreshing. The sausage was very juicy and tasted like it had been made fresh. The shrimp balls were also tasty, but the real stand out dish was the pork chop, which was probably one of the best I've ever had. I'd definitely consider coming back and ordering that again. Now, it has reopened in a relatively huge space, a nice corner spot on Driggs that formerly housed the very short-lived Bunk Sandwiches. We've tried a bunch over the years from the first location, with the standout definitely being the excellent Pastrami Fried Rice ($18) with chili paste, sichuan pepper, crispy garlic and peanuts. Some of the standout dishes are the Taiwanese sausage (appetizer or fried rice, always my fave having this as a snack in Taiwan -- must order), popcorn chicken, chicken fried rice. We tried an off-menu shrimp dish that was also so delicious and the shrimp is great quality. I know the pastrami fried rice was devoured by some of the group, it is definitely a great option if you like pastrami (also love the NY influence here). I also loved the bone-in pork chop fried rice dish (such a big piece of meat!) The seasoning of the battery was on point, but the chicken itself was overcooked and stringy, not the moist popcorn chicken I was hoping for. The greatest miss was the Sha Cha Beef Fried Rice. The Flank steak in this was hard, not tender, and extremely salty. This was in sharp contrast with how bland the fried rice was. Friendly good-looking staff, asked them what the most popular dishes were -- the Sha Cha Beef and the Numb Numb Pastrami (???). Sounded really good so me and my friend ordered both, and it was DELISH. Pastrami was a bit salty according to my friend (it's pastrami!) -- but I loved it. Also ordered cucumber salad (YUMS) and the shrimp ball, which was crusted and also "oiiishiiii." Also try the Taiwanese sodas... the Apple Sidar & the sasparella - hard to find and tastes better and less sweeter than any American soft drink (seems all Asian soft drinks and desserts don't use that much processed sugar). I have tried everything on the menu at this restaurant, and I'm happy to say that all the items are quite decent to very good. The standouts for me include the sausage (appetizer or fried rice version, which is the same sausage), pastrami fried rice, and the fried shrimp ball appetizer. All of the rice dishes are tasty, but I think missing some texture in the overall profile, which probably requires additional heat in the wok to make it crispier. The flavors are great though. I don't get to Brooklyn very much, but we had to go to the Google Store to get my mother-in-law's phone fixed. We decided to find something local to eat and came across Fan Fried Rice Bar. My wife and mother-in-law are both Taiwanese, so we decided to give it a shot. For those who aren't familiar with the Taiwanese culture, they put a lot of pride in their cuisine. You won't find the finest Taiwanese cuisine in a Michelin star restaurant, you'll find it at midnight walking through a noisy, smelly, crowded street market. To this day, some of the best things my taste buds have ever encountered were in Taiwanese street markets. When most people think of "fried rice", they think of the neighborhood Chinese takeout place trying to use up yesterday's white rice. It's a shame, because it keeps most people from having truly great fried rice. I've had a lot of fried rice in my day, and the bowl I had an Fan Fried Rice Bar easily ranks among the top. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean. Each grain of rice is cooked to absolute al dente perfection, flavorful, and all coming together gloriously with peas and eggs in perfect balance. My mother-in-law is such as good cook that she generally hates going to restaurants, but even she complimented the dish, saying that it takes really good technique and really, really high temperatures to achieve this. The decor is simple, but definitely evokes Taiwan. A projection screen above the bar shows a steady stream of vintage Taiwanese films dating back to the early 20th century. The menu is simple, but contains a lot of the classics you'll find in a Taiwanese street market, from popcorn chicken to Taiwanese sausage to fried pork chops. Given their location, they wisely avoid dishes that aren't necessarily friendly to the Western palate (stinky tofu, oyster pancakes). Of the dishes they do serve, they all rival the best of what you'd find in Taiwan. Of course, the only downside is that the prices aren't quite what you'd see in a Taiwan street market, but that's to be expected...it costs a bit more to maintain a cool street corner in WIlliamsburg than an old wooden cart.
