After a long hike decided to eat here as it was in our hotel. The fitness plate, brown rice with veggies and chicken was gluten free and delicious. My husband had the onion rings and the club sandwich, the portions were huge, he couldn't finish all the food. He said it was also very good. The service was great, very attentive. So, I feel the need to change my review. We came back the following afternoon for lunch, and while the food was just as good the service was horrible. Our waitress was so preoccupied with a table outside that it took forever to get our food. So, instead of the previously given 5 stars, I now think it is only worth 4. read more

I was staying at a nearby hotel and wanted a quick meal and a beer. Usually I'd eat at one of the good brew pubs in town, but this was easy walking distance. I sat at the bar, and started with a Single Engine Red. It was flat and way too warm. Then tried an Alaskan APA, and it too was flat and too warm. Very casual atmosphere but right on a beautiful lake. Had the Alaskan King Crab Legs which were very good but messy. They do not give you towels or wipes for your hands. Went here for lunch on a sunny summer afternoon and sat on the outdoor porch. The porch has a great view of the anchorage seaplane base. The food was decent and the service was also good and friendly. Most other places in the country this place wouldn't be that great, but it fits right in here in Anchorage. If this place were in any other city I'm not sure I would seek this place out, but on a nice sunny, summer day in Anchorage it's great to eat out on their patio. The food is perfectly fine...but you don't come to the Fancy Moose for the food. You come for the outdoor deck on Lake Hood during summer. It doesn't get too much better than sitting outside on a sun drenched lake shore watching the world's busiest sea plane base. Sometimes it feels like you can reach up and touch the float planes as they land. Good selection of Alaska brews on tap too! We are from Northern California. Everyone's been raving about the Fish & Chips here. So NOT disappointed!! The halibut fish & chips were beyond amazing; their secret lightly yet crispy (not greasy) beer batter was perfect!!!! Special dipping sauces amazing too. My visit to the flying machine was perfect. The weather kinda sucked but it was well worth the walk over. My rib eye was cooked perfectly and taste great! The shrimp bisque was effing fantastic! I wish I could wash my ba#$s in it! My server Joni was sweet and plenty helpful. If you're like me and enjoy airplanes, good beer and a relaxed atmosphere, then hang out here for a meal. The deck is the only redeeming quality. Despite specific instructions to our server out drinks were cough syrup sweet (I mean how hard is it to make a mojito that's not too sweet?) Menus change about mid May to reflect out of this world prices for what would barely pass as mediocre food. Come for the deck, the airplanes, and the beer. One star for the view of Lake Spenard - the floatplanes coming and going out of Lake Hood keep this from being a zero star joint. Seriously, this place makes me want to try a Gordon Ramsay "Kitchen Nightmare" before going back. We came in the one evening for dinner. It was busy - but no queue and plenty of open tables, so we sat down. Staff was everywhere and so disorganized it was embarrassing. After almost ten minutes of sitting with no menus, no water, and no silverware, we flagged down a server delivering something to a table nearby. His comment after asking for the aforementioned items was, "you aren't my table." Not helpful. I had to instruct him to go find whomever was responsible for our table. Some time later a woman walked by, threw two menus on the table and disappeared. No hello, no missing waters, nothing. After a few more minutes, a waiter showed up (yet another person) and took an order. I asked for a salmon burger, my girlfriend wanted a bison burger with a side salad instead of the fries. This took a while to communicate, as the server clearly did not have English as a first language. 45 minutes later the place had mostly emptied and our food FINALLY showed up. Well, mostly showed up. My salmon burger and fries came, as did her bison burger. The side salad had disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle of restaurant hell, never to be found. Meanwhile the salmon was overcooked to the point of being dry, and it and the fries were lukewarm at best, having obviously sat in the pass forever while one of the clueless waitstaff probably was off ignoring other patrons. It took several more minutes to flag down another staff member to fetch the manager. When he finally came over, it was beyond the point of fixing. We explained the atrocities on the plates in front of us, and that we were no longer willing to wait nor did we have faith they wouldn't screw such simple food up again. We left without eating and wandered up the street to another bar/sports pub. I can't claim the food was any better, but at least they got it right, and the service elsewhere was prompt and courteous. Do yourself a favor - bring a picnic, sit on the lakeshore or the dock, and bypass this inept tourist trap. read more

We eat out a handful of times a year and selected this restaurant because they stated they are allergy conscious and will help accommodate. I specifically expressed to them that I have a dairy and egg allergy and asked about a couple of items I knew might have been enriched, which they said they were. I decided on a safe salad and blackened shrimp. We waited over 25 minutes for a garden salad with 4 shrimp. As a professional chef I knew when they set the plate in front of me that it had been cooked in butter. I asked our waitor to check and, yes, it was finished in butter. Such a disappointment, the shrimp were removed from the check, but I left hungry. Wait staff should be trained to make it very clear to the kitchen staff when someone expresses and allergy. read more

We were staying near the airport because we had an early morning fight the next day. We were just looking for a cold beer and some light fare. It was a busy Saturday night, but we were immediately seated. Our server made some great suggestions for appetizers. Everything was delisious. Service is slow. Wine is excellent. Shrimp cocktail was excellent - although an extra small fork for this would have been nice since it is served in a small wine glass and it is too narrow to dip your prawns into the sauce, you have to dig the sauce out with your fork as it is buried beneath a field of greens and it is too narrow to dip your prawns into the sauce. Tried the crab and scallop Mac n cheese that others had commented about positively. Three scallops and two clumps of crab meat later and I was done. All that was left was passable rigatoni with weak Alfredo. I can do that at home. Very high priced for the quality. Fresh cracked black pepper would have been nice on the pasta. Ice cream on the Free Berry Cobbler (free with the purchase of an entree - for hotel guests) was yummy - berry cobbler itself - canned fruit topping with some finely ground graham crackers on top. We all already know this, the food here sucks. To top it off, it's also expensive. Yeah the view from here is pretty cool, especially on a nice day, but aside from a beer or a Bloody Mary the chances of me eating here again are never. I had a plate of nachos the other night. It was a big plate for 13 bucks, however the olives were the canned black olive variety, the jalapeños being from the pickled two pack jars you buy at Costco & the meat was so burnt & disgusting I woke up in the middle of the night on the verge of puking! It's nachos, I get it, but seriously....YUCK! Service is hit or miss. I've had some great ones & I've had some that could've cared less about an empty glass. Our table had about 3 people with empty glasses & I watched our waitress walk past us at least 5 times & hang around the wait section by the bar chatting away. Fancy Moose has gone way way downhill in the recent year, I hope they get their sh*t together & revamp the joint because as of right now & after this weekends dining experience, all I can say is "avoid"! I'd Iike to give a no star review but am forced to give one star. They don't deserve it. We have been there twice in the past month and lousy lousy service. Today took 10 minutes to get someone's attention. They said they were to busy couldn't even get us a glass of water it was 82 degrees out. Had been their plenty last year and the service is even worse this year. After another 10 minutes of waiting a waitstaff person finally asked us what we'd like we ordered a beer and burger. Nice and simple for them. After another 10 minutes waiting for beer and being cooked on the deck the manager came out and asked what we'd like. We're like what! we had already ordered we told him, he said no we hadn't. We told him we were leaving and no thanks. He didn't care a damn bit, didn't ask even one question. What does that tell you about the management. Then on the way out we saw the waitperson and asked why the order wasn't put in. The reply was I'm sorry to busy. Well my lady was ready to go ballistic on her. The waitstaff is very inattentive and not really there to help customers, the management is even worse than the waitstaff. The food is just okay can't imagine they improved it over last year, a little overpriced. Hey upper management/owners pay attention and get better management for the waitstaff. Oh yeah how about some training for that waitstaff to take care of the customers I mean we're paying their wages after all. We went to the Peanut Farm and had a beer within 3 minutes of arriving. We were hungry for a burger and a beer at 11pm in the Spenard area and figured a hotel bar like the Fancy Moose would be able to deliver both handily. We were partially right. The waitresses we talked to were very nice, but there were some unfortunate customers in the lounge (both at tables and at the bar) who apparently thought having profanity-laced cell phone conversations at the tops of their lungs was the thing to do. So, that wasn't very pleasant. However, the big problem we had was the PRICING. It was $18 for a not-so-large plate of beef stroganoff with no sides. It was $15 for a simple Reuben and fries. The food was ok, but you can get as good or better at half the price nearly anywhere else in town (Humpy's, Burger Stop, RoadRunner, etc.). The beer was comparably priced to other local places ($5 or $6 per pint) but the food prices were nearly uniformly outrageous. With no ambience, quality, or economy to recommend it, I can't see why we'd ever go back. The only thing saving this from one star is that the staff were nice, the place was clean, and the food was edible. read more

Went in a Thursday around 7pm. Outside tables were full and had folks stalking the soon to be empty ones. Would help if there was a seating policy. I can't imagine trying to relax and enjoy myself with people glaring at me because I'm not eating fast enough. We decided to eat inside, ordered food which came quickly and was very good. Drinks were the usual Alaska pricey wouldn't have minded but they were a weak pour. We wanted a second drink but by this time out waiter was so busy we had to flag him down after 20 mins. Got our second drinks (still very weak). Finished up, for our bill, couldn't find our waiter for another 15 mins went to the bar, rude bartender yelled at hubs and said she couldn't help him and he needed to find his waiter, when he said that's why he was there she told him our waiter was busy getting kegs in the back. Really? The place has potential, maybe we will go back when it isn't so busy. They could use some organization. The chaos just leads to bad service. *side note: were watching a couple at the table next to us as everything they ordered seemed to get offered to another table, then run outside before it was served to them. Need some adjustments here. I'm giving it 3 stars because the food was good. Less the two other stars because the drinks were weak, and the service needs some real work. It could be a great place to go on a regular basis instead of just a novelty to try once and then say, never again. read more

Discovered this place inside the millennium hotel after a tour of the air museum. Great views of the water runways of lake hood, with seaplanes taking off and landing. Food offerings pretty good, bar tender is top notch and award winning. Bar is also well stocked with local offerings and top shelf spirits. Wait staff could be better. After many fine experiences here, it seems like the Moose has decided to take the low road and rip off the summer tourist. My "go-to" meal is the halibut and chips - usually a good plate of food and good service to boot. Our last experience was just the other day and it will be the last time we drop in for quite a while! The service was terrible, had to ask for utensils after food had been delivered, fries were not even warm, the portion of halibut was more in line with a small appetizer plate and was not close to the quality normally delivered. Location on Lake Hood is fantastic. The service at the Fancy Moose Lounge not so much! Attended Beer and Bacon event outside on the hotel grounds. Wanted to have something without bacon, so went into the lounge for what we thought would be a quick bite. The inside lounge was not busy & outside tables were available for seating. The head server was extremely slow & not very friendly. Ordered a burger that was really over priced and at best mediocre. It took several minutes to get the server's attention that we wanted our bill. Then had to wait for another 20 minutes before she brought the bill. I feel bad for the tourists who don't know there are far better & cheaper options out there. read more

I'm only giving this place 1 star because they have outdoor seating with an amazing view! I don't recommend sitting on the patio in the front though closest to the view because there are hedges all around the perimeter with swarms of nat type flies flying in your face. The food was disgusting and I'm not overreacting! If you do go there DO NOT order the steak! They tried to pass off some random piece of fat with hardly any mystery meat on it as a filet mignon. They cover it with loads of gross gravy to hide the fact that it is not a steak. The consistency of the meat was absolutely not a steak. I think it was roast beef but literally a chunk of fat?! My stomach has been hurting and queasy for the past 5 days. Ive NEVER seen a restaurant pull anything like this and Rarely have I seen a filet mignon with any fat on it. I brought it to their attention in a very calm, nice demeanor bc my motto is kill em with kindness. The waiter offered to bring me something else but my appetite was gone. He said he would let the manager know & "maybe" give us a 1/2 price discount only on my meal?! Maybe?!?! What the heck? You never tell a customer "maybe we can give you a discount on a crappy meal" I asked for the discount and a couple of free deserts saying that would compensate. He NEVER came back?!! We waited and waited and waited and waited for more than 25 minutes....no deserts, no check, no manager, nothing?!! Unbelievable... the view is not worth it! Go somewhere else or have a picnic on the lake. their meals are overpriced meals, food is disgusting, nats flying in your face at the outdoor tables & absent minded wait staff!
