My wife and I just had an amazing meal here and we had to write about it. This is a hole in the wall type of place (meaning small, ~8-10 small tables and a couple outdoor tables, and not super fancy, so don't expect extravagant decor, tablecloths and waiters in suits). The owner, Amir, was the only server. I'm not sure if it's always that way, or if someone didn't show up, but he somehow managed to get to every table promptly, and the food came out fast. Sampler appetizer was delicious, especially the salad olivieh and bademjan. Koobideh was juicy and delicious. Chicken kabob was tender, rice fluffy and cooked perfectly. This place used to be good...now...it's a shell of it's former self. They've started cutting corners...watering down the salad dressing, giving you half a jalapeño instead of a full one...charging 6 WHOLE DOLLARS TO ADD VEGETABLES TO A PLATE lol. That's asinine. Love this place. After moving from San Pedro, I'm back again, and I was jonesing for their koobideh. The koobideh sits on top of a pita which just soaks up all the juices as you cut the beef. The grilled tomato is the perfect side. The rice is, you know, whatever; it's rice. It adds good texture but no flavor. I got a side of torshi and my mouth is still watering from those pickled vegetables. Service is always good and pleasant here. It's in a strip mall but still not too noisy. read more

How about Persian food at Fanoos Grill? The restaurant is located in Rolling Hills Plaza on a NW corner that faces Crenshaw Blvd., just south of Kabab Curry of India. This plaza has plenty of parking even during lunch rush; I'm guessing it's because if its quasi cul-de-sac location. The space isn't large with about a dozen 2-person tables that can be shifted for larger groups. Upon entering, you're hit with this fusion of spices that's so aromatic, it made me almost salivate because I was having hunger pangs. The menu is jammed packed with choices, but we kept it simple & picked from the lunch specials, which is available Monday - Friday: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Portions are generous enough that you can split the meal & satisfy your hunger. My order was on its way out as I walked in -- quick & easy. It's a short drive back to the office, & our food was still warm. Although it was only 1 shish kabob, it was a sizable serving of chicken that's flavorful & tender. Onions, bell peppers, & tomatoes are typical accompaniments, & these were nicely charred with a light smoky bite; the basmati was light, fluffy, & plentiful. On the side was a good portion of greens with tomatoes & cucumbers. And there's pita bread... nothing special, & probably not made in-house; the hummus was a different story -- creamy & flavorful, I made a pita pocket sandwich with the ingredients. Yum! My lunch order included a couple packs of sumac; it's a spice with a floral, sweet, & sour tang. I threw it over everything. =) My neighbor is Persian & infrequently feeds me so I know Fanoos Grill is legit because execution & flavor profiles are similar. The VP also enjoyed her lunch (chicken koobideh) & had to save about 1/2 for leftovers. Can't comment on the service experience, but my order was timely & the takeout process was efficient. Huge menu with lots of choices... from appetizers, soups, & salads to wraps, sandwiches, combo plates. And if you still have room, they even have desserts: baklava (phyllo pastry with nuts & honey) & bamieh (deep fried donut). Prices are mostly moderate with the family combo plates on the more expensive side within reason. Not exactly a cheap meal, you do get your money's worth. THE WORST PERSIAN RESTAURANT IN America!!! THE WORST FOOD AND SERVICE!!! Being Persian, I love our food. I have been across the US and have visited close to 35 states. Fanoos Grill doesn't only have the worst food, they also have the worst service!! The owner is super arrogant, rude and frugal! I asked them for some herbs and onions after spending $220 for a to go order, I got home and there was none!! I asked them for juicy koobideh and chicken thigh kabob, instead it was well done! We also got the olevieh salad which they didn't include!!! The food is a nightmare!!! The cotlet appetizer was tasteless and falling apart! They gheymeh stew was basically a can of tomato paste and lentils. Zero flavor! No lemon, no cinnamon and zero meat. They fesenjoon and ghormeh sabzi also tasteless! The loobia polo was a disaster. No meat and tomato paste all over! Pita bread they give you is several weeks old! Chicken koobideh super salty and no flavor. Chicken thigh kabob, no flavor! The baghali polo had no flavor and the lamb shanks was dry! I will not even get in details with the beef koobideh, barg and chenjeh!! Beyond horrible!! Last but not least, the ashe reshte is one of our iconic dishes! They put so much flour in it and it is absolutely the worst taste you can imagine! He should call it flour soup!!! As far as why this business is still open, it is because there is a shortages of Persian restaurants out here in south bay and he is getting away with this so called Persian food!! Small restaurant big flavor. Had spicy hummus and beef and chicken koobideh combo. Hummus was silky smooth with a nice kick. Asked server for an extra plate since we were sharing the beef/chicken combo. He was thoughtful enough to serve us 2 equal portions of beef/chicken koobideh, salad, rice, and grilled tomato and jalapeno. A lemon wedge accompanied our plates as well. Food was divine!! The price on the menu did not match the price on our receipt. Each item was higher price on the receipt. When i asked from the waiter how that is possible, he said if you want to pay cash we can give you discount! His response was Not related. There was a very small sign about " paid by credit card 4% convince fee" . However on the receipt it did not say any convince fee , it was simply higher price for each item. About food : sample plates was good but still too expensive. Gormeh Sabzi that we ordered did not tase like traditional dish we expected. It had Spinach which is not type of vegetable is supposed to be used for this Persian food . This business charged us $4.15 for Persian hot tea which was not even fresh or hot . Wow what a great find. I called an order in instead of using the on line order system and I'm glad I did. The owner was super friendly and helpful in making the order. We got the meal tray for 2 and the meal tray for 3. There was enough food to feed at least 8 hungry people. It was hot when we picked it up and the owner helped get the food in the car. We loved all of the meats but the chicken kabob, the steak, and the lamb were the favorites. We added grilled veggies which were perfect. The rice was also a big plus. I added hummus which was traditional and tasty. For the amount of food the price is very reasonable which in todays day and age makes Fabio's very unique and a great find. read more

First time to this place - was looking for a healthy option and Mediterranean food is always a favorite. I ordered Uber Eats pick up for noon pick up so I ordered when the place should be hopping. It wasn't - only one other person there. That should have been a red flag! Person at counter greeted gruffly, but stated my name and bag was handed to me. Not a warm and friendly vibe. In and out quickly. Ordered Gyros Plate - stated it would have Tzatziki sauce - my order did not have any. The "gyros meat" looked like process oblong flat pieces of I don't know what... most likely frozen and reheated - rice was hard and dry. There was a half piece of pita bread - yes a half piece in a dinner size order for $14.99. There was a small side salad that was dark green wilted and warm lettuce with a slice of tomato but since it was warm and not fresh and a tiny piece of cucumber. Since it was warm to touch, I didn't want to chance eating it, plus it just looked bad and wilted. Upon tasting the Gyro Platter -- I immediately closed the container and threw it away after the first bite- it was not even edible. Wasted $$$. Making a PBJ now - just to get that terrible taste out of my mouth. Sad really - drove 15 minutes each way to try this place. As a Persian customer, I went there with full of hope. I have ordered food, and waited for 40 minutes to receive my food. Quality of the food was very bad, disappointing Koobide was completely dry and cold, rice was good and the chicken was dry as well. I didn't want to be disrespectful to the owner and didn't even mention any complaints, but he wasn't not welcome at all. After just having 2 bites I asked for a receipt for unfinished food. And surprisingly he asked us for cash only.!!!!! Not even debit. Then I had to leave my wife there and go to the first atm and came back with cash (+ the atm charge I got) Don't go there.
