I do like this place overall -- the food is very good quality, and the staff are consistently friendly. The restaurant itself also has a nice, old-school Chinese feel that adds to the experience. That said, there is a serious packaging issue that needs attention. The food is served extremely hot, and for takeout it is packed in styrofoam containers. In some cases, the heat is so intense that it causes the containers to warp or even melt through at the bottom. This raises concerns about food safety and materials leaching into the food, especially given how hot the items are served. On one occasion, I noticed the container had partially fused to the breading of a chicken dish, and I could actually taste what seemed to be the styrofoam. While I understand styrofoam is common for takeout, I would strongly encourage a switch to more heat-resistant and safer alternatives, such as waxed paper-lined or higher-grade containers, especially for very hot dishes. Overall, the food and service are excellent, but the packaging choice takes away from an otherwise great experience. read more

I just wanted to update my review to add since I discovered Jen's Kitchen it has been one of my go to place to pick up food. The taste has been consistent, savory and full of flavor. I'll also share this again, portions always seem like it's for two or shareable. The service is always friendly and we're always checked on. Inside is clean and quiet. I decided to give this place another try, as it had been quite a while since my last visit. I was drawn back by the fact that they serve Peking pork-cho, a dish I've missed since Mayflower sadly burned down. Unfortunately, the experience was a bit disappointing. The Peking sauce had a strange flavor--I'm usually fine with a tang to the sweet sauce, but this one had an odd vinegar taste that just didn't sit right. Additionally, the chops lacked the crispy texture I was hoping for; perhaps they were too breaded before frying fried, but not in the best way. I also ordered the chicken with black bean sauce. When I got home, I enhanced it with some thick glass noodles, and the dish turned out decent. However, I did experience an almost immediate headache and puffiness, likely due to the high salt and MSG content. On the positive side, the prices are reasonable, and I've attached the most recent menu photos, as the ones in other reviews seemed outdated. We used to really enjoy this place, but unfortunately, the quality has gone downhill. Lately, we've ordered dishes like the tomato beef, chow mein, and chicken chow mein, and there's barely any meat in them--just a ton of noodles with very little vegetables or protein. The flavor has also really declined; it's become pretty bland overall. The green beans and garlic corn were way overcooked, and while the flavor was okay, it wasn't anything special. The potstickers were mostly just thick breading with not much filling inside. Overall, the food just isn't what it used to be. I found the hot & sour soup of my dreams! It was so delicious and full of ingredients, besides the usual mushrooms and egg. It was perfect for when I was under the weather, but I could literally eat this soup everyday. Since i was the only one eating it, the large portion lasted a few meals for the next couple days. I ordered my husband the "plain chicken wings" with regular fries. The wings come seasoned a few different ways, none of which my husband would ever order, so I went with the plain, which got good reviews. He said he would never order wings from them because they didn't taste like anything. To Jen Kitchen's defense, they were "plain." I was in town for a popup, didn't know where to go so I searched Yelp for recommendations. Saw they had great reviews and the pics of food looked great and decided to try them. Definitely a hole in the wall mom and pops place, can't found too many of those anymore. Me and the fam got seated right away, there was only one table of costumers. Jen Kitchen, I visited this place a few times. Their food is usually decent (for American Chinese food). While the last time I went there, I ordered the Salted Fish with Chicken fried rice and Hot and Sour Soup. I ate about half the fried rice and that night I developed a fever, body fatigue, shivering, stomach cramps and diarrhea. I think most likely from food poisoning. I won't be coming back. read more

Jen Kitchen Chinese Cuisine is a hole in the wall spot to check out. We tried the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Honey Garlic Short Ribs, and both were absolutely amazing! The sweet and sour chicken was perfectly crispy with a tangy, flavorful sauce, while the honey garlic short ribs were tender, juicy, and packed with sweet and savory, my favorite choice here. We also ordered the Pork Fried Rice and Chicken Chow Mein.... both good! The food was hot, fresh, and packed full of flavor. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. I (literally) live behind this restaurant and have been ordering here for years. The kids who work here are so wonderful and so polite, and the food always comes out hot and extremely flavorful (portions are HUGE but they don't "pad" dishes with tons of veggies and no protein); oh, and if they tell you 10min, food will be ready in 10min. Do they use MSG? Yes. Is there food super greasy? No. My go-to dishes are the sweet and sour chicken (all white meat), bbq pork chow mein, shrimp fried rice (lots of huge shrimp), kung pao chicken, brocolli beef, and their STEAMED pot stickers because they're made in house and are DELICIOUS! (they are MUCH larger than the fried stickers) I will say that my only negative is the online ordering services they use charge exorbidant fees/tips ($4.50 auto tip on an $11.00 chow mein dish? Um, ya, no. I tip well, but a 40% automatic add-on? Pass) So...I recommend calling the restaurant directly for pick up orders. Walking into Jen's Kitchen brings back that same nostalgic feeling--the décor, the tables, even the chairs. Our whole family has really grown fond of this spot. My family ordered take out for dinner from here after calling it in. The restaurant was clean and has an area to order and pick up right in front. We ordered beef chow fun, cashew chicken, vegetable egg foo young, sautéed green beans, sweet and sour pork, walnut shrimp. The workers were all really nice and friendly on the phone and in person. The ratings looked high. The menu appealing. We were close and ready to eat. Unfortunately, they are still on COVID slow down and there's no dining in place. To go orders only. We placed an order for three dishes. Service was friendly. He took our order, read it back and accepted payment. He told us that it would take 15 to 20 minutes. She waited out in the car while I waited inside. When the order was ready, he brought it out to me in one plastic bag. I asked and he said that forks, chopsticks and soy sauce were inside. We drove for a bit, looking for a peaceful park to sit and eat. Not finding one immediately, we opted for a shopping center parking lot where we could dine in peace and quiet. The weight of each container of food was quite heavy for its size. The bottom most container was the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. It was tied up in a plastic bag in case anything leaked, which it did. Even though there was a piece of cardboard separating it from the top two boxes, the downward weight cracked the Styrofoam clamshell and some of the sauce leaked into the bag. It probably would have been better if they had separated the order into two bags. Of our three dishes, the House Chow Mein - 4 - was the best dish. It was very reminiscent of the Chow Mein you may have gotten from a Chinatown restaurant in days gone by. It didn't have what is called wok hay but it was quite good. The Curry Chicken over Rice - 3 - was okay. Flavorful and loaded with Chicken and Veg. What we found disappointing was instead of a strong curry flavor, heat was added via chopped jalapeno peppers. Not the flavor that we were looking for. The Shrimp in Lobster Sauce over Rice - 2 - wasn't to our taste. Too many mushrooms, not enough egg and certainly not enough flavor. Got the szechuan chicken dinner special (szechuan chicken + choice of carb + 1 egg roll/1 cream cheese wonton) and salt & pepper calamari. Holy moly was the dinner special humungo. Heaping portion of food! Could easily make 3 filling meals out of it. The szechuan chicken was a bit bland but was super tender. What I liked the most was the chow mein noodles (my carb choice) as they had the perfect bounciness to them and weren't greasy at all. The egg roll and cream cheese wonton were pretty standard. As for the salt & pepper calamari, I wished it was crispy but the flavor was on point. If anyone remembers the Hong Kong Café on the corner of Broadway and fifth Street, that's what this place kind of reminds me of; old-school Chinese Food that is difficult to find in Sacramento any more. I grew up in Sacramento and remember going to Lu Shuan Buffet on J and 3rd Street and also miss Luau Gardens! I took a gamble a couple of weeks ago and based on Yelp reviews, I decided to hike across town to try this place out. I was immediately greeted by some millennials, which doesn't happen at all in the food industry. I was actually shocked that they made eye contact and were pleasant. Where do you find that at today in the food industry? My friend and I ordered pan fried potstickers (we also had the option of ordering steamed, but did not), the brandy fried chicken, which was served like chicken tenders so that you don't have to fight with the stupid bone of a chicken, house egg foo yung, and house chow fun. Everything was fast, fresh, and excellent. We did not have to ask the wait staff for a thing! They continually came to our table to ask if we needed anything and how things were and promptly filled our water glasses without even being asked to do so! I asked how long they had been in that location because I recall seeing that restaurant many many years ago. I was told that they took over ownership during the pandemic. I also asked one of the employees how many cooks they had in the back and I was told that they were two. I asked if I could adopt them so I can take them home to my kitchen, but I got a weird look; I would've never taken them home, of course, but Chinese Food is my favorite kind of food and to have, those flavors cooked every day for me would be amazing! As of today, I made my third visit there within the last week and a half. They are reasonably priced and the portions are decent. You get what you pay for here and that isn't so bad today! We opted to eat inside during all three occasions in which we visited. No one else was in the restaurant, except myself and my lunch partner. You've got nothing to lose. It's worth a try. read more

We got bbq pork fried rice, crab cream cheese wontons, honey garlic wings, and mushroom chicken. The portions are big. Those dishes were enough to fill up three people, and have leftovers. They do not have indoor dining still. It is all to-go. So you might want to call in your order ahead of time. We got there on a Sunday, ordered, and only waited 15 mins and our food was fresh and ready. 10/10 recommend this place! read more
