I walked by Farid's Grill for a year intrigued by it. For one thing, there was no menu to be seen on the truck, and yet it's always popular. Different sides of the truck advertise two different websites - faridgrill.com and faridsgrill.com - and neither link works. In the winter at least, people are calling in orders left and right. Who are these people? What do they know that I don't. Seriously, what is up with Farid's Grill? I went there one day before dropping off my clothes at the nearby laundromat. I asked what the most popular dish is: he said the platters (as opposed to the sandwiches spoken about in the other reviews), namely the chicken and the "pick 3"; I opted for the mix of meats, which cost a surprisingly hefty $18. He also said it would take 20 minutes, so I may want to keep my "baby" (referring to my huge laundry basket) in the car to keep him warm. I smirked and said I should and then awkwardly and promptly realized he wasn't joking. Fast-forward 20 minutes later and I dove into the platter. While the price tag initially concerned me, I can confidently say that it's a huge portion that should be interpreted not as a single $18 meal but two $9 ones, which makes the overall price more reasonable. It comes with two different soups, a salad, two different kinds of seasoned rice, and three different kinds of meat (chicken, and I believe beef and lamb). I simply love this little spot. For a couple of bucks I get a huge quality sandwich that was cooked over charcoal right in front of me! They set raw meat onto a skewer and make every order from scratch, which delivers an unbelievable taste. They use romaine lettuce instead of iceberg like most people which adds quality and taste to it. He's very nice, and I feel as if it's the best bang for your buck. 12$ for meat/yummy spicy rice/bread/salad/two soups - the orzo soup is really good, I like to mix some in with the rice, and salad. This place has been pretty consistent with their food, in terms of the rice and meat being tender. The only time the taste was a little off was once during Ramadan, which I'm going to write off as him fasting- May Allah SWT reward him and everyone else that were cooking while fasting. Open for dinner and late night. Almost always a line. The Man on the Grill is a true Master. I usually order chicken kebab over spicy rice with salad and a side soup. Fresh juicy and hot. Has to be the best street meat in Astoria. You will have to wait. There is a constant flow of people ordering, plus it takes time to cook. They have shwarma, different kebabs, kofta, lamb chops, you can have a sandwich or over rice. Soups are great homemade, and yellow rice or spicy rice. The service was atrocious. This is the first time yelp has let me down. After asking an older gentleman what he was making because it looked so good he was very rude and repeated order at the front of the truck. Maybe his English wasn't that great. But then when I tried to ask the person taking the order he gave me a similar response listing what they have. I have no idea what to order there is no menu or pictures so I just ordered a chicken kebab which was overpriced and covered in sauce to mask the bland meat. This is one of the best street carts in NYC. Their sandwiches are just great. Love the chicken sandwich. I highly recommend to call ahead. It takes about 20-25 mins to make a sandwich. Its not fast food by any stretch of the imagination. They slowly grill it over charcoal. And they put the meat over fire after you order. Hot sauce is an option. Came here after seeing an episode of Munchies and got the Chicken kebab sandwich. The sandwich came on a slender almost foot-long baguette and it was amazing. The chicken is made to order cooked over charcoal on metal skewers and deliciously seasoned. It also comes with a variation of sauces that adds creamy texture and subtle sweetness. Hot sauce is also an option. Some greens and tomatoes are also added to round it out as a true sandwich. However, as noted by others below they take incredibly long to prepare the food which is also okay - but they serve customers out of order (like the cabbie that said he's double parked and will only take a sandwich is its given to him instantly). Terrible, we placed an order and they told us about ten minutes, after almost twenty minutes we asked about our order they said they were looking for our order then waited patiently for another ten minutes, got tired and left. This is a wonderful place and a truly staple in Astoria. The menu is simple (kebabs with rice with a soup/stew and sandwiches) the food is truly delicious and made to order, the prices are imbatible, and the workers -starting with Farid the owner to everyone else- are always very helpful and welcoming. You may have heard that they suffered an islamophobic harassment a few weeks ago (when they were closing people shouted anti-Muslim insults and throw eggs at them). If before Farid was a must for a wonderful pickup in Astoria, now more than ever is important to support this place to show that hatred has no place in Astoria, New York or anywhere else. This is absolutely the best food from a cart you will ever find in all of NYC. Always call and order pick up, food takes about 15 to 30 minutes to make. I always get Beef over rice with a side of green and white sauce . There soups and salad is equally delicious. A plate of food with rice & protein of your choice, two soups and a salad included for 12$ an order. Sometimes the don't have the soups or the salad but one plate of food is more than enough to eat. There are two types of rice in the plate both taste better than the average rice that you find in other carts. The salad usually comes with French dressing (it's orange) but sometimes it can be white sauce or balsamic vinaigrette. The soups are usually chicken soup, lentil soup or tomato soup, sometimes you'll get one or two bowls of soup or none depends on whether they have any left. Even though you ordered over the phone you definitely want to check in on your order once you get to the cart just to make sure it's being made and no one forgot about your order (human error happens). Unfortunately as of late he hasn't been out on a regular basis. He's almost always closed on Wednesdays. But sometimes he can be gone for a week. Always call and order pick up! you will find farid grill food stand on steinway ave in astoria and if you are lucky to grab a parking spot or walking around the area its kinda hard to miss the truck with its neon lights flashing halal food brightly. with a bunch of arab theme restaurants in a 3 block radius this food stand holds its on . the food is cooked on a flaming grill charcoal filled griller and damn you can smell it blocks away. you got your chicken, lamb, beef in its plate , sandwich forms or maybe you are in your no meat zone so its pea or veggie soup then. i usually pick up the troop a few half of chicken with rice and salad with no complaints from anyone, the charcoal is what really brings out the flavor. its smart to order and come back in about 15 minutes or else you will wait around like a hobo with no cause, some reviews state that the guys working the stand are not friendly but folks must understand that these guys are not here to socalize so be understanding and stuff your face with some chicken kabab with yellow or brown rice. the prices are fair, the portions are better then average and my troop and i have never gotten food poisoning so i can say that farid grill is a safe bet when visiting steinway st. read more
