    Peach torta
    Susan G.

Very cute and cozy interior. I really loved most of the dishes. We got the burrata, which was creative with blueberries, the pappardelle, the fusilli, and the peach torta. The burrata was creative with blueberries. The fusilli was delicious as well with pesto. The peach torta was buttery and a mix of hot torta and cold ice cream. However, the pappardelle was disappointing as it was extremely salty. We were unable to finish the dish, which dampened our experience. Overall, most of the dishes were amazing but one was inedible due to the salt. While pricey, the dishes were substantial.

Our favorite restaurant for two decades. Way too long since our last visit. Have they continued making fabulous food? Yes! This quirky space (I feel so relaxed here!) houses one of the best dining experiences this wonderful city has to offer. The staff, at every level, from owner Johan to the assistant, is professional, attentive and gracious - everyone is welcome. Knowing we'd bring home leftovers we didn't hesitate to order freely. The housemade bread is delightful, and works perfectly to get every drop of chicken jus. An amazing current soup is fresh pea with bacon, cream and shallots - spring in a cup and not to be missed. Pasta bolognese and cheese platter with preserves, roasted nuts and wine crackers to start. Then chicken al mattone (under a brick), broccolini simple and fresh, duck fat-roasted potatoes so worth the indulgence. Too full? Too bad, perfect bread pudding awaits. Can't resist. Bring someone you love and have a feast.

Sfoglia Caesar (romaine, anchovy, lemon gremolata, parmigiano)

Magnifico! We had a tremendously great evening at Sfoglia, our first time in this Upper East Side Italian upscale restaurant. The food is spectacular. We had the Caesar salad, which is very tastefully presented with romaine and anchovy. Our main meals were the pappardelle alla Bolognese, which combines a rich and flavorful sauce with a delicately thin pasta, and spaghetti and ramps with egg yolk, likewise very tasty! Our dessert came at the recommendation of our friendly and attentive waiter, a delicious torta of the day with ice cream, superb! The accompanying red wine came at the recommendation of our waiter as well and was just the right complement to the food. Along with the dessert we had house-made limoncello, which was just as sweet as our excellent host said it would be. All the staff is very professional, friendly, and welcoming. The setting combines charm with intimacy and a feel-at-home family atmosphere with a touch of luxury, very suitable for our anniversary occasion. Highly recommended for a unique culinary experience. We will be back!

My good friend invited me out for a speaking engagement at this nice little gem in the upper east side. Our service staff was awesome, very attentive and always filling our glasses without having to ask. Dinner was family style which was great for our small intimate group. Ive had casear salad plenty of times but at Sfoglia theirs was just how its supposed to be topped with anchovies! Next was the bolognese and Al Mattone chicken was just absolutely delightful to my taste buds. Sfoglia did it right! Will love to come back to celebrate my 1 year anniversary next month!!!

    Burrata, complimentary bread

Such a cute restaurant! My friend and I walked in on a weekday evening and were seated immediately. We were seated at a long wooden table with a rustic vibe, which contrasted nicely with the warm yellow light emanating from Victorian-style chandeliers. We started with some complimentary bread with olive oil, which was nothing to write home about but a nice tradition. We ordered the Burrata, which sat atop some autumnal ingredients (squash, pepitas). Pretty tasty. We shared the pappardelle alla bolognese, which was excellent. Loved the very wide, flat noodles, sprinkled with Parmesan. Almost like a deconstructed lasagna. We also got a side of crispy brussels sprouts, which were fine. I don't love it when there is too much mayo/aioli drizzle on my brussels sprouts, as they were here, but that's pretty standard across many restaurants. The cook was good. This meal was pretty pricey, can't lie, but the vibes were really nice and cozy for a slow dinner.

Sfoglia's Chicken Al Mattone Potatoes with duck fat

Such a lovely evening :) This restaurant is the embodiment of quaint UES charm. I walked in on Saturday at 5:45pm and was seated immediately at the bar. The space is cozy and beautifully decorated. The staff was very attentive. I started with a lemonade which was homemade but not as lemon packed as I had hoped. The fresh baked sour dough bread with olive oil was delicious. The Caesar salad came with fresh anchovies. The salad was big and could easily feed two people. I had the roasted chicken with potatoes in duck fat for dinner. The portions are big. The chicken was crispy yet juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were crispy and full of flavor. I did not leave room for dessert but I've had the dessert here before and it is great. Overall this was a wonderful dining experience. The price is on the higher end but it is compensatory for the quality of the food, the portions and the service.

    Vegan pasta

To be perfectly honest, we wound up here after mistaking it for La Voglia, the similarly named Italian restaurant one block away. By the time we realized our error, we were already hooked by the cozy-but-elegant environment and a glimpse of the house bread basket. We weren't sure if Sfoglia was going to be a great fit for vegan diners, but the friendly bartender was happy to give us a helpful and honest run-down of the options. Unfortunately, their homemade pasta is not vegan, but they have boxed pasta that was great with their top-notch San Marzano tomato sauce. The seasonal parsnip and cauliflower soup was able to be prepared vegan and was GREAT. We also enjoyed the garlicky broccolini. We really appreciated that the manager came by to check on us and customize our order. We'd love if they added another vegan item or two to their regular menu, but all in all, we had such a great experience and would be happy to return here.

Once upon a time this place was special and made me feel the dinner there was so precious. I didn't feel so at all tonight especially due to poor outside seating and setting. Setting was so cheap and looked temporary. Not a huge difference than fast food table layout outside. Dining is the whole experience of food and ambience. Dishes were not bad, but I was very disappointed tonight and regret we came here. After main meal, we ordered the dessert, tiramisu. It was hard and not tasty at all. Very disappointed. Next time if we come, we will book inside.

Last night was my second visit to Sfoglia in less than a week after a long hiatus (first time was at the original in Nantucket). During my first visit last Wednesday, when I arrived, I asked the attentive hostess if there was room at the bar and she cheerfully replied, "certainly" and promptly walked me over to an available seat. The bartender was Stephanie, who is both an expert at her job and very personable. I started with a glass of Trebbiano, which was excellent, and the bread, which is hands down the best I can remember having. For an appetizer, I had the beet salad which was not great compared to what else is available nearby. Same can be said for the ricotta cavatelli. It looks very good, but the only taste was the cooked pasta. To be polite, I "took home" the ample leftovers, but tossed the bag in the first trash can I passed on my way home. What made up for the disappointing food was Stephanie's recommendation for a red wine, the Barolo. Although my initial reaction was to not go back, last night I decided I should try it again and explore the rest of the menu to see if I could find something I liked. This time, Sam was the bartender. As it turned out, we had a few things in common which made getting to know him even more pleasant. I again started with the Trebbiano and, of course, the bread. The regulars sitting near me all agreed on the bread. My favorite dish locally is a half roasted chicken which is prepared very well at a couple places in the neighborhood, so I ordered that, a choice endorsed by Sam. For the appetizer, he recommended the gazpacho, which was excellent. The chicken, however, was an experience identical to the cavatelli in a disappointing way: it looks great, but the only taste was cooked chicken. I literally stopped eating after one bite. They were out of the Barolo last night, so Sam recommended the Etna Rosso which was just as good. As I was finishing my wine, Sam came over and tried to explain why I didn't like the chicken which, of course, was impossible because I hadn't said a word to him about it. I had no interest in discussing it and abruptly cut him off with something that included the word "fuck" in it. That attracted the attention of the owner, Johan, who immediately came over and said I couldn't use that word with his employees. That sounded pretty quaint, but I admitted it was the wrong thing to do and apologized. I offered to tell my side of the story, but he refused to hear it, just insisting that I finish my wine and leave. I had maybe half a glass left and admittedly I'm a sipper not a gulper, especially with a tasty wine. When I had about a quarter glass left, Johan came over a second time and insisted I leave. I protested and said I wanted to finish what was in the glass. But he was unmoved and told me I had to go. I responded sarcastically, "well, call the police then." He immediately took my glass and I had no reason to stay. As I followed him to the door, he pulled out his phone and DID call the police. As we were walking through the foyer, I could hear him say, "there is a patron who refuses to leave my restaurant." After we got outside, he went back in and locked the door. Out of curiosity, I waited for the police, but they never showed up. On my way home, I called the restaurant and got an answering machine. I left my number and asked for Johan to contact me so we could clear things up. I haven't heard from him, but will update this review if I do. 8 28 2023 afternoon update: This story gets curiouser and curiouser. Last night I met for the first time a regular who was sitting at the bar, for awhile just the two of us. We had a surprising number of things in common and eventually decided we should get together with our wives/girlfriends sometime. I checked-in with him earlier today and told him about my unconventional exit. Tom responded with this: "I thought they were trying to hustle me out the door. You know, less than 1hr to eat." I replied: "Really? There were open seats at the bar the entire time!" Tom replied: "I know. No one was there." I said: "I guess they are woke and just hate old white dudes like you and me." I'm pretty sure the four of us won't go to Sfoglia when we get together. Mercy. 8 30 2023 afternoon update: After lunch and Scrabble in Carl Schurz Park with my best friend, I walked back up 92nd Street to my apartment at Madison. As I approached Lexington Avenue, a nice looking couple left Sgolia and stood on the opposite corner from me getting ready to cross. As we approached each other in the crosswalk, I recognized Stephanie, the bartender from my first visit. I re-introduced myself while we shook hands and let her know I was there again a couple nights ago. Then we were on our respective ways. Still no return call from her boss, Mr. Congeniality. 9 4 2023 update: Spent a total of $320 for those visits and no call yet

Service was fast, but the dessert was a little underwhelming. We got the rhubarb pie, it had Basil ice cream. BASIL. The place was a little cold and the decorations were falling apart and old. Overall, the main course was good, and they also let us in early.

It appears most changes comes to the type of pasta used in a dish, aspects around a dishes main focus and gelato/dessert flavors. Everything we ordered was an 8 or above out of 10. The beet salad (BARBABIETOLE) is easily 10/10 and a top 3 salad we have ever had. The chocolate cake with gelato (TORTINO DI CIOCCOLATO) was 10/10 and the best dessert we had at Da Andrea. We ordered 3 total, including the ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu. Tuna Tartare, gorgonzola pasta and bolognese are 9's. The fritto misto, the other pasta we ordered and the other 2 desserts are 8's. The restaurant was relatively spacious for Manhattan, with dim lighting and a beautiful floral exterior. They also had a great-looking antique bar. For drinks, I ordered the watermelon mocktail, but really was not a fan. I ended up swapping with my partner and drinking his non-alc beer instead. For starters, we shared the Insalata Di Caesar. This was a pretty mediocre Caesar salad, but got the job done. For entrees, most of us ordered pasta dishes but none of them were stellar. My Ravioli Di Crostacei was pretty bland and my partner's Spaghetti Bolognese just tasted like the pasta you could make at home. Service was friendly and they managed our large table well, but overall, I wasn't thrilled with Da Andrea.

Baba Al Rum was also tasty, as was the Orecchiette. Rigatoni was salty, but well-flavored. I visited a popular Italian restaurant from the Union Square Hospitality group with a group of five others. The restaurant is quite large, and although it was somewhat noisy, the tables were spaced apart enough that it was easy to hear everyone. We had an early dinner at 5:45 PM, which took quite a while, but I didn't mind. To drink, I went with the Bitter Giuseppe for $19, with Cynar 45.3, Punt e Mes, lemon, and sea salt. I'm a fan of most Negronis, and this was a particularly bitter version. The bit of lemon and sea salt added a unique but enjoyable flavor at the end, though in retrospect, the salt probably wasn't super necessary. Two of us split, and eventually, a few of us ordered their signature appetizer, the $18 Cast Iron Focaccia, with tomato conserva, a mixture of crushed tomatoes, olive oil, and Calabrian chili. The bread was fresh and warm, albeit a tad oily and salty, but it paired wonderfully with the conserva. As someone who doesn't like it when bread is extra, this was delicious and worth it. Another person ordered the $18 Insalata Verde. It was very large, but fairly basic, with a vinaigrette that had a citrusy and mustardy flavor. There was also the Caramelized Onion Torta for $27, which was very large, as expected for the price point. It had a creamy and tangy flavor from the Pecorino Toscano with some sweetness from the onion. It was delicious, but very heavy, and I would recommend that around three or four people split it alongside the focaccia. Finally, there was also the $15 Pizza Bianca, which was easily the smallest of all the plates, but they still enjoyed it. My main dish was the Orecchiette for $26, with ramps, pistachio, and pecorino. Like most of their dishes, the portion size was quite large, with plenty of pasta, which was perfectly cooked. The ramps added a touch of sweetness, although I would have liked a few more nuts. Additionally, there was almost too much pecorino, which made the dish slightly salty, but it was still enjoyable. As a side, I got the $19 Grilled Asparagus with dates, vermouth, and blue cheese, which came with many pieces of lightly charred asparagus. While there was plenty of funky blue cheese, I would have preferred more dates. Two of the others got the Rigatoni Alla Gricia for $30. The portion was large, and I tried a bit while they tried mine. The noodles were again cooked perfectly, and while there was a lot of guanciale, this was easily the saltiest of all the dishes. For dessert, I chose their Baba AU Rum for $18, which was uniquely mixed with chocolate and orange. The presentation was a bit off, as it looked like a certain emoji, but the flavor made up for it. The subtle hint of rum paired with the bitter-sweet chocolate and orange. The dark chocolate-covered orange slice on top was a nice touch as well. Someone else got a tart, and one other person got the Gelati, which resulted in one of the only faults during service. She heard it was two scoops, and ordered espresso stracciatella and hazelnut, but was given two separate orders for $12 each. The gelato was good, but unlike most things, definitely not worth it for the price. I liked the appetizers much more, but I found the food good overall. Tasty dessert, and the portions make up at least a bit for the relatively higher prices.

Being Italian American, I'm hypercritical of spots like these - but nevertheless the positive reviews were overwhelming so I wanted to check it out for myself. One of my friends and I were looking to catch up, so I booked a table and off we went. While it can be tricky to get a reservation during prime dinner time, it's relatively easy to get a lunch reservation - or an early/late dinner. I managed to get a reservation for dinner at 9:15pm which was the earliest I could find. The restaurant is pretty unassuming on the outside - it looks like a converted brownstone and once inside we were greeted by a large space with a sceney vibe. The space is split between two levels with a large bar up front and a semi-open kitchen in the back. The decor was modern - with lots of greys and neutral tones which was a little unexpected. The main star of the menu is pasta, but they also have a few non-pasta mains as well as some crudo selections, apps, and sides. We decided to get a few apps, two pastas, and one side. To start, we went with the octopus, roasted mushrooms, burrata crostone, and focaccia. These were all really good, but my favorite was the mushrooms. I'm usually not a fan of mushrooms but these were prepared with red pepper and fried egg and were delicious; it cut through the earthiness and changed the texture to something I really enjoyed. The focaccia was also a standout - it's house made and was paired with a peppery oil that complemented the bread well. For mains we split two pastas - the caccio e pepe and the rigatoni. Both of these were very good, though I felt the rigatoni was the stronger dish. It was prepared with sausage ragu, soppressata, broccoli rabe pesto, and pecorino. The flavors worked really well together and the pasta was cooked al dente. The caccio e pepe was perfectly fine, I just feel it's been overplayed and didn't feel there was anything that stood out amongst the others I've tried. We also got a broccoli rabe as a side which was great. We couldn't leave without dessert and decided to get their olive oil cake and quattro formaggio cheesecake. The restaurant is known for the former - it was perfectly fine but I've had olive oil cakes elsewhere of the same or better quality. The cheesecake was the stronger dessert IMO - the combination of cheeses gave it an interesting, almost savory flavor. The brûlée top and mascerated strawberries were great texture and flavor complements. Service was great - the place was packed but service was consistently on point and everyone was friendly. Overall, I had a good experience at L'Artusi. While everything was very good, I'm struggling to find the exact reason why this place became such a hot spot compared to other Italian spots in the city. Nevertheless, you'll have a good meal here and I would definitely return if given the opportunity.

It was difficult getting a reservation for the time we wanted so I booked for 45 minutes later. We…read morearrived at our desired time, told the hostess we were early and immediately seated. Water and excellent bread arrived immediately and the waiter was helpful describing dishes and giving advice. Salads were fresh and crisp. Caesar was nicely dressed and the mixed salad was a nice combination with well balanced herb vinaigrette. Seafood dishes had large amounts of fresh seafood and the veal picatta had the lemony flavor you expect without excessive acidity. Dessert was tasty and innovative. The ricotta based cheese cake wasn't as smooth as the cream cheese form but the citrus flavor was great. Throughout the meal water and bread were refilled, plates from completed courses removed and next delivered without being overly hovering. All in all a really great meal.

I read the reviews mostly good so I was hoping for the best. My friends and I were not disappointed. The first thing I noticed was there were 7 people in my party and 4 arrived early and did not have to wait for my arrival to be seated. Second the waiter who took our order was polite and on point with specials and knowledge of the menu. He (just never caught his name) suggested the Rigatoni which chicken and sausage. I am not really a pasta eater but baby that dish could change that; it was DELICIOUS. I even liked the anchovy dressing on my Caesar Salad and I dislike anchovies. All the dishes ordered (chicken parm, mussels chicken paillard etc.) everyone enjoyed them immensely. The only negative was when the Chicken Paiikard arrived it was supposed to a shared dish by the elderly couple and they asked for regular dinner plates from one of the servers. It took the gentleman who took our order to step in and said sure, lucky their food was still hot. Common Sense is not so common for all. But this will not lower my rating as it was taken care of swiftly. The portions were the perfect size and I was not stuffed but pleasantly satified. We told them the time of our show, food was out quickly, nicely presented, still hot and very tasty. The restaurant was not noisy and had space between the tables. It also had an elevator for those who could not manage stairs. Trattoria Trecolori you will be added to my must go again list! Thank for a wonderful experience!
