Ordered the spicy calamari & honey BBQ wings to go. disgusting. I can't believe a restaurant serves food at this quality. For some reason, they poured the dipping sauce all over the fried calamari. It was soggy and very chewy. The wings are frozen chicken wings that taste like they have been microwaved and then a low quality sauce was poured onto them. The celery was the only redeeming part. The carrot sticks were wilted and old. Very disappointing. I will never go there again. It cost $23 for that terrible experience. read more

big portions of reasonably good food, pretty good service, reasonable prices. the menu didn't do much for me - i am a vegetarian; most places like this don't really cater to vegetarians but i like to check out new places and they served our slightly large group with no problems. i had a salad that wasn't as big as the waitress made it seem, but was still ok. i also had some fried appetizer plate that was pretty good and fried - i think it was fries, onion rings, zucchini .. not real gourmet type stuff here. the ribs looked good and a large portion i probably wont go back on my own but i would have no problem returning with a group. read more

We don't live far from Farrell's so my husband and I have dined at Farrell's fairly often in the last 8 years or so. Last night we stopped in and it may well be the last time. I ordered chicken cordon bleu, a dish I'd had often in the past. When my meal came, it was two flat breaded chicken cutlets with a slice of ham and a slice of cheese on top. The sides, mashed potatoes and mixed veg, were tasteless. To add insult to injury, let's just say my body rejected my dinner. Come to find out, my sister, who had ordered fried mozarella for her dinner had the same issue. My husband, who ordered the bistro steak, was not happy with his meal either. It's too bad. The remodeling they've done is beautiful. I just wish they'd take the same care with the food. read more

Farrell's has been a standard in Portland CT for dining for many years and that says a lot. I don't drink much at all but I do enjoy a great bottle of wine at times for dinner and they have that. Limited selection of wines but very nicely done. There is a huge big sports Bar area here now after a remodel but drinks from the Bar information you would need from another review. The food at Farrell's is down home, homemade, made to order, comfort food. This is not your Lutece in NYC. It is however, seriously excellent! The menu is large with a few items offered from Pasta, Beef, Pork, Chicken, etc. You get my drift. A few excellent things from everywhere. You will see Tacos and Fajitas...(oooooh the Fajitas are just awesome!)... to Standing Rib Roasts and Yankee Pot Roasts with all the trimmings. The Prime Rib Sliders are seriously Yummy. All of the entrees are very good and if you want or don't want something with your meal, just ask. Folks here aim to please. To begin your meal, may I suggest some of the standouts - their renowned Clam Chowder, amazing French Onion Soup, or the Homemade Chili in a Bread Bowl.. you cannot beat these on a cold day. If you are not hungry, the soup or chili alone will fill you up! Other Home Made soups or chowders are offered on occasion and Daily Specials in all areas of the Menu are normally on display on a small blackboard at your point of entry so you know what the additions to the menu are. I have enjoyed most of their menu and I am a fan of the Homestyle Turkey dinner, complete with fresh baked Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade scratch gravy, vegetables and cranberry sauce! Thanksgiving on a Plate just "works" for me. Farrell's is also known for their Famous Sausage and Peppers and there is a reason for this, I don't think in decades I have ever heard anyone say they did not love this item! Everyone brings it up in conversation when talking of Farrell's Restaurant and it is one of the very best things on the menu. Not too hot, not too much spice, just perfect, every single time. Fresh hot homemade rolls are delicious with all dishes on the menu. Seasonal or Holiday specials such as Whole Belly Clams or Corned Beef and Cabbage, etc. are always good and you normally leave with a box. Weekends people come from everywhere for the Prime Rib Special and it is delicious and seasoned perfectly. One of the other specialties here are the immense arrays of Bread Pudding Flavors for Desserts... they make excellent Bread Pudding and different flavors on any different day. Desserts are very good here but limited to a few choices per day. ALSO CATERING from this restaurant I have personal experience with and it is excellent. From planning the menu to execution everything was perfect and particular and the menu selections were on time and hot or cold as they should be, they took care of the entire setup all of the serving, and the cleanup and did absolutely a wonderful job! Everyone was happy and loved the food. I highly recommend this place for a bite anytime, for dinners, for family dinners out, and definitely for catering as well. I'm not sure why I've lived near this place for so long and never tried their fish sandwich? I had it yesterday and it was the best fish sandwich I have ever had I'm not kidding! And Ive tried many. It's called the Black and Tan fish sandwich, it is beer battered with lager and Guiness beer on ciabatta bread. Absolutely amazing! The batter was super flavorful , the way it is supposed to be! My husband had the Rueben sandwich which was the bomb he said and generous on the meat! I ordered the steamed vegetables with mine instead of the fries and they were perfectly cooked , fresh and delicious. If you ever have room for desert, which we didnt yesterday, but do have the carrot cake it is homemade and amazing. Our server Gail was top notch, she was attentive, polite, and just made us feel at home and cared for, she was awesome! Just a pleasant and yummy experience all around and of course we'll be back. The Orchard salad with grilled chicken and Moms Turkey dinner are my other fav's, as are the Fajita's and steamed cheeseburgers. read more

I tried this restaurant about a year ago with a friend. The waiter was extremely rude to us because we were splitting appetizers and a dinner. We were very embarrassed and felt degraded. My friend and I made the mistake of getting a group of friends together to give Farrell's another shot for her birthday. Once again, from the moment we walked in the female bartender was rude to our party. At the end of the night, there was a dispute on a check for which the bartender was at fault and a member of our group. However, the bartender thought it was okay to be extremely rude to the individual in our group and proceed to slam glasses. For some insane reason, I felt bad for her so I was getting more money to tip her at which point I went to ask her a question and she snapped on me. Throughout this entire situation little did I realize a manager was sitting at the end of the bar and never once uttered a word to us. With all that said, the food was less than mediocre. All of us being from Portland we were hoping to find a spot to get together more regularly and frequent but you better believe they just lost the business of over 10 people from town. read more

I've been here a few times, stopped for a late supper tonight. The food and service is always good but tonight it was excellent. I tried frizzeled onions and had a bowl of chili. Frizzeled onions are thin delicate onion rings and delicious. I was mixing them together and the flavors were amazing when combined. So nice to have a delicious satisfying meal followed with good coffee. Farrell's is always 4 stars but tonight it gets 5 stars. read more

Over 30 years of patronage, gone down hill- wasn't great before the renovation- we use to come here every sat - then branched out to other restaurants, when we return back it is hit or miss - more miss miss miss lately. Seems the customer is always wrong - not him so much- but though they are friendly to customers- they really need to listen to customer, if something is wrong and not treat them as if the customers is the problem. If a meal should be comped just do it and with out excuses blaming the customer. All it takes is one spoiled piece of Seafood to Ruin the sauce hence the whole meal is bad. There were times I just would not say anything - cuz it would be me that is wrong. Wait staff good-if not too slow-getting us our bill and returning to get for processing. Bar tenders hit or miss - they can be the problem too. Too long to get drinks- 6-10 people in bar are, place overall was not busy and there were 3 bartenders. read more

I went here a while back and have never been back since. I started off by ordering a drink. The waiter IDed me, yet despite being of age, she went to get her manager instead of my drink. The manager made me take out my ID again, looked it over, then left with it (perhaps to scan it?). When she returned I still didn't get my drink and the manager said I could only have alcohol if I signed this form. I was starting to get angry by this point, as this is not how you treat customers, but for some reason my fiance and I stayed. The food wasn't good and the service definitely wasn't better. OK where do I start. Came into this bar at about 7 pm on a Saturday night with a group of about 20 for a birthday. People showed up over the next 2 hours making it almost 30 of us. Various tabs were opened and the night progressed. First I tried 4 different appetizers. Nachos were awful, wings were under cooked. I had to send them back to the kitchen, 20 minutes later they came out half cold and almost as bad as they were originally. Buffalo chicken dip was average at best but don't plan on getting full as they served enough to fill about 12 chips. Potato skins are the best thing I had and they were just OK. The worst part of the evening is when we got our final tabs. Random food was put on our tab which was clearly not mine. When I asked the bartender about it she said the girl at the other table didn't pay for her food so I just put it on yours. I would have no problem paying for someone in our groups food but to just put it on my tab and not say anything is just wrong. After a discussion about this the young brunette female bartender proceeded to get irate, smashing glasses around. The point that really angered me us when she proceeded through our group of guests grab drinks and being rude to everyone there. We spent well over 1,000 dollars this night. All through this the manager or owner was sitting at the end of the bar and did Absolutely nothing. I am a very easy going person. This is the fisrt time ive been in this bar and i own a business about 100 yards down the road. Barely anything bothers me. The bad food and awful service I received tonight will not only make me never go to this bar again I will go out of my way to let others no of the awful service and food I had. If one of my employees ever acted in a manner as this bartender did to me I would have fired her on the spot.
