First time trying the fried porkchop, which had a crunchy crust without drying out the meat. Flavor was there and is a definite reorder. The corn nuggets were ordered on a whim, but they were really good. Get them for your kids and they'll love them...crispy and a bit sweet. Fat Boyz used to be one of those places that made you proud to live nearby -- back when they were on Hillsborough and Powerline. The kind of spot you'd tell your out-of-town friends about: "Oh, you haven't lived until you've had their barbecue." There was warmth, smoke in the air, and smiles behind the counter. I don't know what happened -- new ownership, bad day, alien abduction -- but whatever spark they had has vanished. I paid $33 for smoked turkey, sausage, collard greens, and coleslaw. The collards snd coleslaw were the stars of the show (bless them for staying true), but the turkey... mercy. It was so dry I started wondering if they'd cooked it during a drought and it absorbed the atmosphere. Halfway through, I realized I should've ordered a side of gravy and a medical alert bracelet. Thank goodness I had a drink, otherwise, the next sound out of me would've been performing a Heimlich on myself.. But the real kicker? When I popped back in to refill my drink -- the same drink from their free refill fountain -- I was told, with a tone that could curdle buttermilk, "Only for people who dine in." Ma'am, I assure you, no one is "dining" here. We're surviving. I sat there thinking how this used to be a place with heart, where the barbecue had soul and the staff had kindness to spare. Now it feels like both got smoked right out of the building. I'll always have fond memories of the Fat Boyz that was -- the juicy meat, the laughter, the good vibes. But the new version? Let's just say the only thing getting thinner around here is my patience...No joy. No manners. And certainly no moisture -- which, last I checked, was kind of a thing for barbecue. Made a stop here after leaving the beach. Walked in to a nice open area. I don't know why but inside felt like a picnic area. You had the choice to order at the counter or at the kiosk. We decided to order at the counter. The staff member was nice she had an island accent. We placed our order and was told it would take about 15-20 minutes for it to come out. We ordered a rib tip plate and a sausage sandwich. The rib tips were good. The sausage sandwich was underwhelming. For $12 I expected either more sausage or for them to be cut thicker. Well, Valentine's Day and BBQ go together like ice cream and waffles, surprisingly well! The meat by the 1/2 pound or pound is what I did. Felt a little South Carolina and got 1/2 pound pulled pork. It was salty and smoky with the right sauce and sliced white bread. Damn good. Next the whole slab baby backs were done just a bit over done but in their defense I got the days last slab. Having said all that, they were still delicious. NOW, the burnt tips, these were THE BEST THINGS WE HAD off the menu. They were charred to perfection. They were tender and fatty, there were EFFING delicious and went really well with their greens and sliced white bread. A true down to earth restaurant with and awesome, friendly staff. First thing first...bbq is a passion of mine. We've lived all over, and we've travelled extensively. Every state boasts good bbq (especially in the south), but not every place can deliver. Prior to living in Florida we lived in Texas and Georgia...so when you hear "good bbq" in Deerfield Beach...you have to be skeptical. Fear not...the ribs and brisket are solid. The collard greens and Mac n cheese are also good. This might sound a bit out of order but we like to mix the greens and Mac n cheese with the brisket and add some of their mustard bbq sauce. Everything we have tried so far has been worth the price. Granted...nothing compares to true Texas bbq, but I'm happy that we found Fat Boyz to help fill the void. Can you put on my lunch break because some of my coworkers have been talking about this place. I was recommended to try their coconut shrimp with their amazing sauce. I also ordered mac & cheese and collard greens on the side. The coconut shrimp seemed to be a little bit. Too much soaked in oil. In my opinion the sauce was good! Carla greens were great as well. Fat Boys Barbecue, a family-owned and veteran-owned business, has restored my faith. I highly recommend it! I've only experienced the Deerfield location, and it has a charming walk-up order and sit-down atmosphere. If you're looking for a fast-paced establishment, this is definitely not it. They follow their own family pace, and you can tell they truly care about the food they serve. Their smoked turkey, jerk-style chicken, smoked brisket, and much more are absolutely phenomenal. The conch salad was really good I could tell it was fresh.The cracked conch was also nice and it was my first time ever having it. Customer service was nice they brought our food to the table and we were greeted on entry. You could tell it was a local favorite bc of the line inside. Nothing terrible about this place but also nothing I'd rant and rave about. Initially ordered and didn't even notice the "lunch specials" were Monday-Thursday only (today being Friday) and was instantly corrected and told "can't have that today" okay my bad, sorry! So I got the non lunch special pulled pork sandwich with fries, Mac and cheese and coleslaw. The sandwich is reasonably priced but in my opinion the sides are a little outrageous. $3.50 for a side of coleslaw is a little steep. But hey just my 2 cents. Okay let's get to what actually matters, how did it all taste!? The pulled pork sandwich, was what you'd expect. Smoked meat on a bun. The meat wasn't dry, had okay taste to it, nothing overbearing but also could've used some flavor. The bun must've been old, or terrible quality. It was on the firm and dry side. Just kind of brought the sandwich as a whole down because I needed to drown the bun out with bbq sauce. The Mac and cheese was pretty good. Creamy and tasty. Coleslaw was good, seemed to be shredded more then traditional coleslaw, which was nice! I prefer my coleslaw more shredded vs feeling like I'm eating a piece of lettuce. Fries were straight out the fryer and had a generous amount of seasoning and crunch to them. The Carolina style sauce was good, could be better if it had a little more "zing" to it aka spicy! The Memphis sweet was good, lots of flavor but something about a yellow bbq sauce will always be my favorite. Overall not a terrible place, would go back if looking for bbq in the area which is not that common anymore. Bbq joints are few and far between in south Florida today. Went to the Deerfield location a few times and today was definitely the last time I support this business. Food is just okay, nothing amazing. What definitely looses them stars is that NASTY ATTITUDE! The cook brought our order, no smile, no enjoy, just a mean stare like we're annoying him by eating there or existing. Asked him for a fountain cup (which are stacked behind the counter) and he gave us a long stare down and made a point to walk as slowly as possible to go get the cup, then kinda slammed it on our table (we still said thank you) and instead of saying "you're welcome" or "enjoy" he just gave us another stare like "I'm not here to serve you" but he is, he literally works in a restaurant! I think he's the owner on top of that! He looks like he just got released from jail like an hour ago with his pants hanging below his ass and he would rather nobody bothers him at his business.
