Employees are nice and friendly, took my order promptly: a charred polish w/onions, mustard, & sport peppers/ single fatso burger w/onions, mustard, pickles and a fry proceeded to fix it. Everything was correct except she didn't give me a fry w/the burger. Then she charged me 2 bucks for a regular order of fries. Polish was just-OK. It seemed to be steamed and then put on the broiler for effects. Was cooked by being charred unfortunately. Same thing w/my moms hot dog, she was impressed and said it was steam cooked. The burger wasn't fresh ground beef it was a frozen patty of meat. I hate those types of burgers. It too was just OK. The fries were GREAT! They were fresh cut and fresh. I'm so glad my friend dragged me here! I've always wanted to try this place since we share the same name and I hear they have good food. Everything on the menu sounds delicious, with their Fatso burgers, Mac-n-Cheese w/ salami, Char Grilled Salami, and some crazy secret menu items. They're open pretty late and even have breakfast. If I lived in the area it would get dangerous. I would come here way too often. I had an awesome Char Cheddar Dog with some solid Fries, but I was blown away by the Jumbo Fried Shrimp. These were some huge beefy shrimp, fried to crunchy perfection. Easily the best fried shrimp I've had since I can remember. Don't forget the spicy cocktail sauce. I already want to go back for some more Jumbo Fried Shrimp and I really want to try the Char Grilled Salami. Not the healthiest meal, but who cares. The food here is just so good. I dnt get what all the hype is abt! Stopped here last nite & ordered the shrimp po' boy, fatso, a cheddar char dog w/ fries, & an order of cheese fries. The shrimp was gud in the po' boy altho I wasnt diggin the slaw. The dog was gud as well but the fatso burger wasnt anything special. It tasted like a regular grilled burger u can find in ur local grocer's freezer. The cup of cheese for the fries was disgusting, it had oil & was pasty, ewwww! Had the Fatso double burger- it was OK- I would compare it to In-N-Out..Just the burger with tax was over seven bucks- a bit pricy for what it was. My first visit, next time I will have a char-dog which looked good on the fire as I was watching the burger cook.. For a hot dog + burger spot, I waited longer than I initially anticipated, but it was well worth it. It gets to be quite crowded at 2am, but be patient! This is a really cool Chicago casual food spot with a ton of character and really great food. Before visiting Chicago, I knew that hot dogs were one of the foods the city was known for doing well. Honestly, if I could physically eat here every day and not get heart disease, I would. Really light on the wallet, super delicious, actually NOT that greasy (I mean the burgers and dogs, sorry fries are self-explanatory), and they make everything on the grill for you in front of your eyes. There's no hullabaloo about this place - its nonpretentious, cozy-feeling, and the place smells like heaven - all with some good ol jazz sprinkled with the Beatles playing overhead (sorry, no junk they call hip hop these days). Their burger with egg and bacon (add-ons, so just a little extra moolah) is probably THE best burger under $10 I've had...ever. Char dog is pretty average (you'll find better at flub a dub chubs or even Portillos), maxwell polish is where it's AT. Be warned, while it is usually a good thing, they give copious amounts of fries with everything - whether it be a huge whopper burger or a $4 hot dog (plus 2lbs of it is only $2 i think), so if you want to beat the bloat, well....I guess you can't unless you grab a to-go bag (if you want to save them for later, like me), because the price doesn't really change with or without the fries. The outdoor seating is a must in the warmer weathers, you sit right across from this beautiful ukrainian chapel! Girlfriend asked to use the employee-only washroom and they let her. They asked if we wanted grilled onions on the fatso and everything on the dogs. I said yes. I read the biography of Phil which stated he was an original owner of Herm's Palace in the early seventies. The dogs and fries came up and girlfriend asked me to get her mayo and they had that. The food was everything that said it was on the Food Network. The chardog is a Chicago hot dog on steroids, but the service could have been better or else I would have given the restaurant a perfect five. It amazes me that every restaurant puts out a tip jar when no one bothers to provide just the run of the mill SERVICE. Fatzo's giveth and Fatzo's taketh away. Based on the yelp review and the photo in the lobby, somehow I took leave of my senses an got the Fatzo's special. It hurt so good. I didn't even come close to finishing it. Perfect dog inside a delicious Polish sausage, cheese spread, grilled onions and Mac and cheese...oh and salami chunks, because well, 'Merica. So good, but sooo much. I shall not attempt it again, but it was amazing. The highlight was the Mac and cheese on the dog. Sooooo perfectly creamy, cheesy an delicious. I am going to agree with Garnet S on this one and give PLS a four star (I don't give many 5 stars), but a 4 for me is a top flight experience. I have been in this place before when it was under the old management and am happy to see this hot-dog stand up and running under Phil's guidance. I came in one rainy night and was greeted by Phil at the register. Phil is a fun guy, and he was barking orders at the smiling crew behind him which added to the feel of the place. He told me that they more or less gutted the place, and since I was in the old place, this place has been cleaned up and new counters installed and the set up is much nicer. The hot dog and french fry artists are young kids and the night I was in they were training two young girls who looked like Ukrainian exchange students. Who knows, they might just be kids from down the block. At any rate I ordered the hot dog and free fries combo and got the cheddar version - which was prepared with the full compliment of Chicago Style fixings. The french fries were amazing. I like mine fried a little more than these were prepared, but the flavor was great, and they mixed them in a stainless steel bowl after taking them - freshly - out of the fryer. Everyone was all smiles at this place, and after a long drive and a long day I was very happy when I got my hotdog home. Phil mentioned a burger that is styled on an In-N-Out burger style burger and I will come back in to try one of these next week. Me and my friends decided to come here for some snacks. We ordered Samuel's Double Fatso Extreme, Single Fatso Smash with Cheese, Super Hooey Gooey and Chili. Then we order Chocolate Banana and shake for our drinks. Our order came really slow. It took about 15 minutes of waiting. When I looked to their plating it looks presentable. Samuel's Double Fatso Extreme are served with bacon, fried egg, fatso sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. Single Fatso Smash with Cheese is a smashed patty grilled on a flat top which prepared by Fatso style which includes lettuce, tomato, onion and Fatso sauce. Super Hooey Gooey is a two patties stuffed with bacon, cheddar and Giardini era and topped with Fatso sauce, lettuce, tomato and onions. Chili is a Cleo's award-winning chili. The cashier said she was unable to add the charge for a second patty on one burger and asked if I had cash to pay 2.50 for the extra patty we asked for while ordering. I happily gave her cash but when she was packing my order I noticed she was talking nervously an frowning and handling my order as if something was wrong. We Ordered 2 fatso burgers one with cheese & bacon and the other without cheese. The burger was actually good but it tasted like a burger I'd had before so I was looking for something different. The fries were crisp and seasoned well. I ordered a side of fatso sauce and I had a hard time with actually tasting the sauce. I didn't get a flavor from it. On to the shrimp, the shrimp breading was decent but what made the shrimp pop was the "spicy cocktail sauce". Me and my friends came here for some snacks since its break time in our office. Its near in our office work so no hassle to drive. There is a table outside so we sit in there. Some of my friends order our food so we wait them in the table. The after a couple of minute they came and they tell us that we wait for about 15 minutes because we ordered a lot. Nestled between two classic churches in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood, Fatso's Last Stand has spent the last several years catering to diners looking to find salvation between a bun. Formerly known as Phil's Last Stand, Fatso's serves up run-of-the-mill Chicago fare like hot dogs, burgers, fries and shakes. Unlike the others, however, Fatso's has been showing up on numerous "best of" lists. Its burger even beat out Au Cheval to finish second in Chicagoist's 2017 Best Burger Award. Sitting on a corner at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and North Oakley Boulevard, Fatso's looks unassuming, dare I say underwhelming. The Fatso mascot (a shrimp-riding cross between General Custer and Cap'n Crunch) is prominent throughout from the mural to the menu. On this visit, I'd walked about 30 minutes in 80 degree weather and was looking forward to sitting in an air-conditioned room to enjoy the menu item of my choosing. Upon walking in, I quickly realized that Fatso's is so no-frills that A.C. is not included. I would be parking myself on the patio underneath an umbrella for this meal, dear reader. Fatso's offers never-frozen single and double burgers (top them with cheese, bacon, a fried egg, etc.), different varieties of hot dogs (they're char dogs, which is important apparently), shrimp (so the mascot is basically riding his smiling companion to the gas chamber) and sides (fries, tots, mac and cheese, fried pickles). I ordered a single Fatso with cheese and bacon along with a side of tots. The employee behind the counter asked if I wanted Fatso sauce, so I did that too. For those choosing to eat inside (maybe it's a cold day or you're just a big fan or sweat lodges), a long counter runs across the perimeter of the restaurant and a few tables are peppered throughout as well. From my research, Fatso's used to be cash only which would explain the presence of the ATM. I, however, had no problem using plastic. The food arrived promptly in Fatso's standard wrapper. I loaded my food, water cup (free refills are available if you go the fountain drink option) and pre-filled ketchup cups onto my tray and headed outside to the patio. My first thought was how much food this was. For $12.00, I had definitely received my money's worth as far as quantity was concerned. The tots were fresh, hot and steamy. Circular and about half a size bigger than regular tots (edible ping pong ball basically), the crispy outside houses a cheesy, starchy inside. Think of it as hush puppy meets loaded backed potato. They're really delicious. The burger was also enjoyable even if the cooks went a little overboard with the Fatso sauce (kind of a mayo aioli hybrid). I noticed the presence of the burger and cheese, but more for their textures than their flavors. The bacon was a collection of thick, quality pieces that was a welcome addition. I would have liked the bun to be a bit thicker. As is often the case with burgers, by the last couple of bites you're futilely trying to keep the burger to bun ratio equal before resorting to bringing out the fork and eating it hamburger steak style. It's a small complaint, but the person who figures out how to solve this will rightly move up to the top of the list for the Nobel Prize. I left Fatso's feeling extremely full. The optimistic part of my brain had hoped to save room for a peanut butter shake, but about three quarters of the way through the meal, I knew I'd have better luck convincing my mother to get a Post Malone lower back tattoo. As tasty as it was, I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon. The heavy meal stayed with me for about the next eight hours, as it felt as if I'd ingested a deep-fried bowling ball. My recommendation for those with average appetites such as myself: just eat half the single, or split a double and fries with a dining partner. Hi, my name is Monica and I'm addicted to Fatso's. I began this New Year thinking that I was going to get fit and right but I started it off with going to Fatso's 4x already (and counting). The quality of their food is really what gets me to keep coming back. I usually go with the single smash with everything on it. I definitely do prefer the smash over fatso even though I don't necessarily understand the difference yet but both delicious. You also cannot leave without getting their shakes!
