Pretty good, but not as good as it used to be! I haven't been here since before COVID. Not sure if Scott still owns this restaurant or not, but he wasn't there last night. The sushi was pretty good, just not as flavorful as I remember it. The ginger dressing for the salad did not taste like it had ginger in it at all. It was more of a vinaigrette dressing - so that was pretty disappointing. My son and his girlfriend got the Miso soup and neither one of them liked their soup. My daughter got chicken tenders and fries (she isn't quite into sushi yet, or seafood at all). She said they were the best chicken tenders she ever had. I really wanted the Pebble Beach roll, that has always been my favorite. The waitress said they have been out of scallops for three months. She stated they could go to a grocery store to get them, but their chain restaurant has certain place they purchase their seafood. That was a bit surprising!!! Had an early dinner here a couple weeks ago; my apologies for the late review. I also don't know why it took me so long to eat at this place! But glad I finally did! There is limited seating and if you are dining during a weekend or an evening that falls on a weekend, I would suggest making reservations. Now.....onto the food - since that's what you're here for anyway ;-) We ordered a total of five sushi rolls: two spicy tuna hand rolls and three specialty rolls including Pebble Beach, the Cajun Roll, and the Shotgun. The spicy tuna rolls were wrapped and cut into normal bite-size pieces (which I appreciate) and were probably the freshest sushi rolls I've ever had. Out of the three specialty rolls, I mostly enjoyed the Pebble Beach and Shotgun; but my boyfriend loved all three of them! We had not one single piece left - which also meant no room for any other entrees or dessert; maybe next time! The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was very laid back. They do have a small selection of beer and you can have your own bottle of wine opened at the restaurant for a nominal fee. Check it out...you won't be disappointed! read more

I think I might have caught them on a bad night. It took forever for our food to come out as they were busy preparing "to go" orders. My neighbors just happened to be at the table next to us. They had arrived before us. Two others were sitting at the bar. When the food did arrive it was such small pieces for sushi rolls I was quite surprised. The rolls tasted pretty decent but were the size you'd expect at lunch. Whatever they were grilling inside filled the establishment with a haze of smoke. Not so good for my recent diagnosis with allergies. Three beers, two rolls and one order of yellowtail sashimi that tasted a tad off... (I ate it anyway) for $80 ish was pretty pricey for the quantity/quality. Wish I'd taken time to photograph the rolls. But we had waited so long and I was famished. Kudos to the gal who waited on us. She was very nice and kept her cool knowing g the length of time it was taking to get two tables their food. I might try take out if I opt to eat sushi from there again. read more

A nice spot in the Pass for sushi! The chef special was good and consisted of a miso soup to start and followed by the chef selection of either sushi pieces or sashimi. I ordered the sushi and had 5 pieces with assorted fish on it. They were good and the fish sliced thick. My only complaint is both waitresses didn't know which fish was which when I inquired. read more

He noticed my interest when I started asking questions and showed me all of their fresh product! If it's not fresh, they don't serve it and I LOVE that. I hate that it's taken almost two weeks for me to get to this review. My wife and I, and our friends the Rosses, were on the Coast for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday. We normally do Sushi on Friday evenings, and wanted to try dining in at Fatsumo. Laurie and I had partaken of their take-out menu before, and loved it, but we wanted to go sit and enjoy. First of all, the trip was worth the effort. This restaurant is small, only a few tables and the sushi bar. Still, due to the kindness of a young couple who offered their four-top in exchange for a vacant two-top, we got a table; we sent them an order of edamame. The menu is pretty straight forward; appetizers, rolls, a nice selection of Nigiri/Sashimi, and a few non-sushi items. We started out with the miso soup and salad, and then the Fatsumo Tataki. The soup and salad were great, but the tataki was a gift from the gods. The tuna was seared just a bit more heavily than we're used to, but that little bit made it perfectly textured. Served over a slightly tart bed of julienned vegetables, it was nothing less than wonderful. We selected our entrees from their assorted rolls; they divide them up into Lightweight, Middleweight, and Grand Champion rolls, and give you the option to combine half-rolls of them all. I took a half-Pebble Beach Roll (Tempura whitefish and sweet onion, topped with baked scallops and Asian remoulade, accented with a lime cilantro sour cream) and half-Fatsumo Roll (Tempura shrimp, masago, pressed crunchies and togarashi, topped with spicy tuna, shredded krabstick and Asian remoulade) - both GC rolls. Laurie had a pair of lightweight rolls, and our friends had a similar selection. All of these were well prepared, and tasty. This little restaurant has a great atmosphere, and a local ambiance. The food is made with top-quality ingredients, and the chef/proprietor is available right behind the sushi bar; he is happy to offer suggestions. We all loved this place, and plan to return the next time we visit the Pass. read more

The sushi is absolutely delicious. It's unique. The menu is unlike anything on the coast! I can't speak from knowledge but it seems like a very authentic restaurant. My only critique is that the seats are very uncomfortable. To be fair, though, this place seemingly wants to push you out of your comfort. With green tea replacing sweet and black chili pepper replacing Sriracha, it's worth a try. read more

Ordered Togo tonight for dinner and was not disappointed. The edamame had the right heat and spice level, but were a bit undercooked. The salmon skin roll was interesting as there are flakes on the outside of the roll. But the roll was packed tight with plenty of flavour. The fatsumo salad is a must have. The julianed snowcrab mixed with their asian remoulode is phenomenal. Definitely will come back for lunch! read more

The absolute worst experience I've ever had at restaurant on the coast. They lost our business tonight. We waited 10 minutes to get drinks and 30 minutes to just ORDER food. During that 30 minute wait, I watched our waitress take an order from a woman at the bar (that came in at least 10 minutes after us) and take a phone order. An hour later, we got our food and it was wrong. She tried to take the order away and I practically begged her to just give me the food! I would just eat what they gave me. I was starving by that point and we really needed to get home. It was another 20 minute wait for the check. If they didn't have the staff to serve 4-5 tables, they should've turned us away. The result probably would've been better for everyone. And yes, they charged us for the wrong food. I paid for it and will tell everyone I know to avoid this place like the plague. read more

I hate writing reviews like this one. I've been avoiding trying this place, because Mississippi sushi, you know? But tonight I was in the Pass and hungry and thought I'd give it a try. Nothing was good. The service was good, actually, but the food was not. I haven't had sushi this poor since I made the mistake of trying Mount Fuji in Omaha. We started with appetizers, a plate of fried crab dumplings and edamame. The crab tasted old. It came with a sauce that was needed to bury the taste of old crab. The edamame was spiced with hot pepper, an interesting idea that just didn't work. I really don't mind people mucking about with tradition, but it has to work. This did not. I went with three rolls for dinner, tuna, spicy tuna, and salmon. The rice was dried out, not fresh, and with poor flavor, but it was the tuna I tried first that made my heart sink. It had been around a while. A good while. I won't say it was rotten, it wasn't unhealthy to eat or anything, but it had lost all its fresh sweetness and tasted as old fish does. Since the second roll was tuna as well, I realized two thirds of my sushi was going to be poor. That left the salmon. I was hopeful, as salmon keeps longer than many other fish and it's quite easy to get fresh sushi-grade salmon just about anywhere in the US, but it was a disappointment as well. I even took it apart and ate the salmon as sashimi just in case all that bad flavor was in the rice, but that wasn't the case. Sushi is deceptively simple. A basic tuna roll is the same everywhere, so it all comes down to the cooking of the rice and the selection and handling of the fish. I'm not kidding when I say this was the worst sushi I've had in a decade or so. Now looking at other reviews, I have to wonder if the place has gone downhill or if I just hit them on a bad night. But here's the thing: no night at any halfway decent sushi place should be this bad. Never, ever. Fish that old tells me never to return. I had sushi at the hibachi place in Gulfport a couple of days ago. It wasn't the best, none around here ever is, but it was lightyears better than Fatsumo was tonight. We wanted to love this place, but it didn't have much to recommend it. The sushi was bland. I asked to make one roll crunchy and it came buried under a mountain of tempura - never saw that before. I also ordered the Fatsumo Roll, thinking it must be delicious because it's their namesake. It just seemed like a lot of stuff put together, without much zing, and I didn't feel compelled to finish it. We also got edamame as an appetizer and the beans were mushy and had hot pepper on it, which might have been interesting if the beans weren't so weirdly soft. The food definitely isn't legit Japanese sushi if that is what you're looking for. There seemed to be only one guy serving and he seemed overwhelmed. Meanwhile there was a man and a woman doing the food and they were barking orders at each other. It took a long time to get our food. To have sake, you have to go next door to the liquor store. But then if you want it warmed and in a sake cup, you have to wait a while for that too. There are a bunch of sushi restaurants around here, so we won't be back to this one. read more

Hats off to chef Scott!!! The wife and I had the ceviche, Yokozuna and crab purses for our apps. We got down on the ceviche!!! It was great. We then enjoyed our newest gastro-adventure, the shotgun roll and it was a true explosion of flavors. This would make a nice date night spot. Can't wait to try all the other items. Great little restaurant with quality sushi for the price. Everyone was extremely friendly and polite. My only complaint is that they don't serve liquor. They only serve beer. Although, if you'd like some hot sake or whatever suits you, there's a liquor store just next door and they give you a 10% discount if you're dining in and the servers at Fatsumo will serve the liquor to you. I had the edamame appetizer and a combo with a lightweight roll and 1/2 largest roll. The 1/2 roll was the Jamaican me crazy roll and the flavors were spot on. Perfect meal. I love the location and the atmosphere of this sushi bar. There are two issues that go along with it but one is remedied by the liquor store next-door. They do not serve alcohol unless you bring it on yourself. They ran out of major fish on the Saturday night like yellowtail, whitefish, etc... The portions were decent but we're not larger as normal.
