I barely even know where to begin with Fausto's. There was so much going on and everything was so delicious, it's hard to put it into words. We were in a big group, so we ordered a few appetizers for the table. We decided on the fried eggplant and the calamari. The eggplant was lightly fried and cut into "sticks". There was marinara sauce for dipping and it was beyond good. The calamari was out of this world. I'm pretty picky when it comes to calamari, because some places overcook it or serve you pieces that are way too chewy. This calamari was just perfect with a nice flaky crust that just melted in my mouth. For my entree I got the Fettuccine Carciofo. This was a pile of delicious fettuccine mixed with olives, artichoke hearts, and large shrimp in a tasty olive oil based sauce. The sauce was garlicky and perfect and was dripping off of every bite. The shrimp were fat and juicy and cooked perfectly and the serving was so large that I took home probably half of it. This dish was so full of flavor that it made the entire meal an experience. I was wishing that I had room for desert, but it wasn't meant to be on this particular day. Our waitress was Mindy and she was a total pro in getting everyone's orders in a timely manner. She was really sweet and patient with our large group and she made sure that our water and teas stayed full and that everyone was happy. She was a gem and made our experience perfect. What a wonderful, authentic Italian meal! I started with the Arancini ($9) Rice croquette (or rice ball) stuffed w/ground meat, green peas, mozzarella & their own Italian seasoning. It was served with marinara sauce and Romano cheese. Talk about tasty! This crunchy-on-the-outside ball was stuffed with yummy goodness. Plus, the tangy sauce and fresh herbs made this appetizer sing. It paired quite nicely with La Crema's Pinot Noir ($10). Next, I dined on the Fettucini Carciofo (&17.95). This dish consists of shrimp & artichoke hearts, sautéed with black olives & fresh herbs. It's then simmered in garlic and EVOO & tossed with Fettucini. I'd like to rename this dish Pasta Heaven! The food, customer service and ambiance are all great! The only challenge can be getting into their limited parking lot. In a way, that's a good problem for them to have! read more

The classics are well prepared every time, but the NOLA spin on this northern Italian and Sicilian cuisine in the specials are great. I have been a fan of Fausto's for better than a decade and when I think about going out for some traditional Italian I always have to force myself not to automatically go here. However I do end up at Fausto's often. It is an intimate setting, with some of the best wait staff you could find. The wine list is something that resembles what I keep in my wine fridge and many things I would like to have in there. The bar dishes out consistently good cocktails and is well stocked. The arancini is a great appetizer and I would also recommend you go with the old standby of the calamari fritti. I have eaten nearly everything on the main dinner menu, but I do suggest you seriously consider the daily specials as well. You'll be back I am sure, so if a special catches your attention ask about it and get it! When you come back the next time the standard menu will be there waiting. If you have a need for a great red sauce, flavorful foods, and one of the best tiramisu in the area then you've found a place to put on your list. read more

This was such a delicious lunch! My fiancé and I went on a Monday for lunch, and were warmly greeted and seated promptly. We ordered the Aranchini appetizer- which was amazing! This is a solid Italian bistro with a small and intimate atmosphere. Lunch is a good value here with a nice selection of specials that rotate Monday through Friday along with an affordable selection of their regular entrees. Dinner is a bit more formal and offers a much larger and nicer selection of items on the menu. I've enjoyed everything I've ever eaten here and it has been consistently good while nothing has ever just blown me away. This isn't really a fine dining atmosphere but it does attract an older crowd for dinner that tends to dress more formally. Lunch generally draws a business crowd and business casual would be the typical attire. Came in on a day off to take advantage of the weekday lunch specials. Started off with the arancini appetizer. The rice ball is big enough to share and was quite good. The red sauce complimented it perfectly. For entrees, my fiancé and I shared the chicken Limone with angel hair and the Paneed chicken with penne. Each came with salad and bread. We each got blue cheese dressing, which we thought was good. The other choices were Italian or ranch. The bread was also nicely toasted and tasted of butter and garlic. The limone had our preferred sauce; it was thick and lemony and delicious. The Paneed was our preferred chicken; nice and crisp, yet thin and delicate. We decided next time, we would get the Limone, but ask for the chicken to be Paneed. When I asked what happened to 2:30 I was told the owner felt like closing early today. WTH so you have to know what mood the owner is in to know what the closing time is? Have passed this place hundreds of times. Had an appt today not far so I thought I'd stop in for lunch, I am so happy I did. Today is Friday and I had the Pesce Florentine. It is described on the menu as a fresh fillet of fish of the day in a lemon sauce, over a bed of fresh seasoned spinach. Served with penne bordelaise. This is a delicately cooked fish that is absolutely perfect! Had a glass of wine with lunch. Way more than enough food and it was perfect! Great balance of flavors! Not Too Impressed First time at this long established restaurant, but wanted to try it based on the reviews and a friend's suggestion. I ordered chef's suggestion which was fried soft-shell crab over crawfish pasta and my appetizer was fried eggplant sticks with marinara sauce. Let me just say the soft shell crab was very fresh and delicious and the appetizer was like most places that serve this item, average. My biggest complaint, being a regular cook myself, was the crawfish pasta. The sauce was way overboard on the thyme herb, and I love herbs. So when I tell you this was powerfully seasoned with thyme, so much, that you couldn't taste the rest of the sauce. The fresh garlic that was in the sauce was just about raw, and you know what raw garlic can taste like if not cooked enough. I was so disappointed in the pasta dish, I had to let the waitress know about it and suggested that she should let the chef know. In my experience, when someone makes a complaint, the manager shows up to interview the person. I was disappointed that someone didn't do so. Anyway, maybe the waitress didn't let them know as I suggested she should or someone didn't follow through if she did so. Let's start with the service. WOW. They treat you like family from the moment you walk through the door. This was the second time visiting Fausto's and I figured it would be a great spot to take my in-laws while they were in town for the holidays. The wine list isn't extensive, but fairly priced and they have all the right stuff. We started with the caprese salad, which they add some prosciutto too - which was a nice touch. The tomatoes and mozzarella were so fresh! My Mother-In-Law ordered the oysters Rockafeller soup, which looked delicious. She also ordered the lemon chicken, which when I looked was completely gone! My Father-In-Law had the seafood pasta dish, and I enjoyed the Veal Saltambooca -- sweet and savory all together. The portions are *just right*, enough to leave you very full, but not enough to stuff you silly. Each dish comes with a side of pasta and red gravy, which you can switch to a butter, white wine, or Alfredo sauce. Wonderful meal. read more

Very disappointed in our meal Friday. My veal was drenched in an oily sauce and practically mush. Our server literally never came back. At the end of the meal, he asked why I hadn't eaten my meal. I told him it was not good and he asked if I wanted to take it home. No. I do not want to take this disgusting plate of veal home. If I didn't like it here, it's not going to magically taste better after being microwaved. I've always had great meals here but the service and food on Friday was horrible. Tonight was the night! What better way to test the waters then a crème brûlée and coffee date. We had always seen Fausto's when going grocery shopping but had yet to stop by. Not real sure as to what the attire would be we decided in the parking lot just to sit at the bar, if they even had one. We entered and I told the hostess the we just wanted to get dessert and asked I if we could sit at the bar... she joyfully said yes! We sat down and started looking around and listening... probably 10 more people walked in behind us ALL with reservations. Then others started walking in without... we overheard 45-1:15 minute waits (depending on party size). Wow! We where lucky to be even sat! As the evening progressed we where greeted by ever employee that walk past, even served by multiple people. The food was awesome, but the staff really made this experience 5 star! Gave this place another chance but shouldn't have. The place is tiny and only 2 servers and a host (who can see basically the whole restaurant from his podium). Went for lunch and waited over 20 minutes to be greeted by a server. Had to tell the host we needed a server. Server claimed there was confusion over our table. How? We had been sitting there, menus closed and at the end of the table so clearly no one had taken our order. Other tables came in after us and were greeted immediately, had their orders taken, ate and left before us. Sergio, our server, never checked back with us just dropped food off and that was the end of our service with him. Time for check, took us over 30 minutes to get that despite Sergio walking through the dining room multiple times to attend to his other tables. Wish I knew his name prior to receiving the check so I could've yelled at him to get his attention since he NEVER looked in our direction. Other server passed us several times & never said a word to Sergio despite the fact that our to go food in a bag was sitting on the table along with our purses & we both had our credit cards in hand! Host finally caught eyes with me and asked if we wanted the check. Finally, we could pay! We should've walked out, bet we would've been noticed then. This is the first time I've ever been ghosted by a server. I did notice that the servers are all over what seem to be regular patrons so if you don't visit this place regularly, I would recommend not going. The other waiter who kept passing us was our waiter last time & again it took forever forever to be greeted so apparently they ignore people who aren't regulars. Besides the horrible service, the food is not that great & mine was not that hot today. Definitely better Italian in the Metairie/NOLA area. We had the Italian salad, the meat balls and spaghetti and eggplant parmigiana was fantastic. The red gravy was excellent. Their garlic rolls are fantastic. Very good cannolis. One word to remember: Arancini. Yes, this appetizer in itself makes the trip here worthwhile. For the uninitiated, Arancini is a classic Sicilian app that's basically a ball of rice stuffed with ground meats, cheese, peas, and some other good stuff all nicely deep fried. Its serve smothered in a good marinara. Really, I could make a meal of off this dish alone. But we didn't. We also had some entrees and a dessert. The Pesce Siciliana consisted of a nice fillet cooked in lemon butter and white wine sauce and served topped with some tasty sautéed shrimp. Excellent dish, really. The fish was perfectly cooked and the sauce was rich without being overpowering. A winner! The classic Veal Parmigiana was traditional - a good piece of fried veal topped with mozzarella and red sauce and served with a side of spaghetti. As classic as Italian comfort food gets. Very good! Dessert we kept simple: a slice of spumoni. Classic. Simple. Good. There is a rather interesting wine list considering that this is a rather small restaurant. Also some very good selections by the glass - including a quite decent Franciscan Cab. As I mentioned the restaurant itself is a bit on the small side and it can quite crowded and a bit noisy on the weekends. It's all pretty informal. Bottom line: Excellent Arancini, superb seafood, and very good traditional Italian. Recommended! read more

I have lived a mile from Faustos for the last 18 months, and finally decided to go in. My boyfriend and I snagged a 2 top after a 10 minute wait (which quickly grew exponentially for those behind us). It has that authentic Italian feel. It is a tight squeeze, and very loud, but nobody seemed concerned in the least. The people patronizing all looked like they had eaten here many times. My water glass never got empty. The food was excellent and timely, and the canolli was fresh. We did not get bread (not that I needed it), but I think it was an oversight. Fausto made sure to ask how our meal was. Five stars spaghetti and meatballs yea it's that insanely good! I would never order that just cause spaghetti and meatballs doesn't sound like something I'd waste money for in a restaurant but man oh man is it worth it here and now because of it I try it other places and it's never even close! You can put that red sauce on a mound of dirt and I'll eat it. I finally tried the Alfredo and it was good but once I added the red sauce to it it turned into greatness. Love this place for real. Such a great local Italian establishment. I've always admired the New Orleans Italian culture and this is certainly a mom and pop restaurant with recipes stemming from decades of family tradition. I was hesitant about the environment based on other yelp reviews, but I found the small intimate candlelit atmosphere romantic and appealing. You have driven by Fausto's a zillion times. It's on the lower end of Vets just a few blocks from the 17th Street Canal. It's a small little traditional Italian restaurant. The food and service have always been acceptable but never outstanding. I have been here at least a half dozen times over the years. I have always thought the portions were a little on the smaller size, I don't think I have ever taken any leftovers home from Fausto's. Don't get me wrong, it's solid but not over the top. Nice little Italian eatery - bistro.... We went on a Saturday night & even though we didn't have reservations we were able to sit right down - but after asking they said it would be a good idea on weekends to have a reservations & I soon saw why - it got crowded. We had the stuffed mushrooms as appetizer - yummy!!! yuuummmyyy!!! My honey got lasagna & I got the eggplant parmigiana (I am on a quest to find the best which I had found - for my taste - as TeCoRo's but sadly they closed) & while this was good - sauce was not sweet, it was very good sauce - it is not my best... I will have to try the other dishes that were recommended cuz I love chicken marsala!! (& not so much on a quest for that so am more open ;-) ) It was a nice place, small quaint & I enjoyed the service & felt comfortable there ... could have been the wine? ;-) I am looking forward to going back to try other dishes!! read more

Now, after 50 times eating at Fausto's I decided to review them. Their red sauce is classic southern italian, heavy, rich and sweet. The tend to overcook their calamari but order it "medium rare" and they are perfect. They are great with fish, seafood, and veal. Was looking for a good Italian restaurant in Metairie recently and someone suggested Fausto's. This is a small, quaint, family owned restaurant on Veterans. I'm told that the owners are brothers who learned to cook from their parents who came straight from the old country. We ordered the eggplant sticks for our appetizer and it was quite good. For our meals we ordered the Eggplant Parmesan and Veal Parmesan which I was told was very good. The breading on both our dishes was good and the eggplant excellent however the veal was not a good as I expected and portions were small. Although I was a little dissapointed in the food I liked the atmosphere and the service of this little gem and would return. read more
