Wow, it's been years since we've been here last! The place has a larger seating area than I remember, the (bocce ball area is now more seating and now there is an uncovered area). Southside Pizza: wonderful balance of chorizo and potato toppings. Goes great with their delicious crust. Margarita Pizza: Basil was whole and a bit dark. I like it when the basil is torn a bit and fresh and green. Asking the mushrooms, the pizza was very good and you can taste the quality. It is amazing what they have done with shipping containers and shipping pallets! Need to be back sooner next time! read more

After a busy morning at the farmers market, we needed some lunch. After seeing a picture of the pizza online, we knew that The Federalist would be delicious. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area. It is nice with a 70-80 degree day, but any hotter than that, I fear it would be a little miserable. I do like that they have misters out there. They do also have a covered outdoor eating area too.  They have games to share which would be perfect for a group dinner. There is also lots of beer and wine, including sangria, available to go with your meals. One of their pizzas was in Forbes Magazine for being one of the most creative pizzas in the US.  As per usual, I felt like I needed some vegetables in my life. The arugula salad was what we decided on. This salad came with market arugula, capers, red onions, pecorino romano, and a lemon vinaigrette. It was a great serving size. The capers were a perfect addition to this salad. It was a refreshing salad and a perfect pairing for the pizzas here.  The Ricky Ricotta pizza comes with deep dish sauce, fresh mozz, pepperoni, ricotta, fresh basil, mike's hot honey, pecorino romano. I am a sucker for hot honey on a pepperoni pizza. The pepperonis were the cute yummy little baby ones. And so many of them which was a major plus. The cheese/ toppings did slide off, but that could be because I did not for it to cool down. I really enjoyed the basil addition to this. The dough was delicious. Perfect thickness in my opinion.  We also had the formaggio pizza which had crushed tomato, fresh mozz, shredded mozz, pecorino romano, and oregano. You could tell they used some quality cheese in this pie. It was a good balance to the other pizza we tried.  Highly recommend visiting this spot. read more

Such an interesting place in the nicest way possible lol It took us a minute to find the place since we didn't really think it was down an alleyway; look for a large container lol Very cool set up with a lounge area and some couches around a TV and then larger farmhouse tables through the sitting area. The outside patio has a firepit and some interesting seating options although with a mister for those really hot days. This is a self serve restaurant. Ordering at the counter and picking it up when it's ready. We visited on a Sunday evening around 5pm and there wasn't a whole lot of people around. I'm surprised this place doesn't have a higher rating, but also not really because people are super picky about how they like their pizzas. This was definitely more Neapolitan like; thinner, wood fired crust and in knowing that you have to semi expect a somewhat softer (maybe mushy) center. The crust was fantastic, chewy and soft in the middle. The outside edges had a slight crisp from the fire which added a good flavor to it. We ordered the Stanford and Southside -- added soy chorizo to one and pepperoni to the other. Both were fantastic in their own way. I loved the added arugula on to of the Stanford and the soy chorizo wasn't too spicy and added a nice depth of flavor. Overall we felt like the pizza was a good price for what we received. Met my SIL for lunch and decided on some good pizza. Federalist has some amazing pizza. We ordered some Wood Fired Rosemary Loaf and a Capitol Pizza along with a beer. There are several picnic tables and an area with a couch and chairs. There is an outside area but seemed to be off limits at the time. Food is always good and beers were cold. You pick up your food at the kitchen area and they ask that you bus your table when done. read more

I'm giving The Federalist a four-star review. It's a place that knows what it is and generally delivers on that. The setup is a bit unconventional, built out of shipping containers with a wood-fired oven at the center, but it comes together well. The indoor space is compact, clean, and intentionally simple, while the outdoor area does most of the heavy lifting: picnic tables, lounge seating, string lights, and even a bocce court. It leans more toward a relaxed neighborhood hangout than a traditional restaurant. Service is counter-based. You order up front, get a pager, and pick up your food when it's ready. From there, it's self-service for water, utensils, and table setup. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the system worked efficiently. It's not a full-service experience, but it's also not trying to be. Food was solid across the board. We had the Ricky Ricotta pizza, meatballs, a double IPA, and a sangria. The pizza was enjoyable... wood-fired with a good char and chew. It did run a bit greasy, likely from the pepperoni, but it stayed within expectations. The meatballs were a highlight, served in a rich, hearty tomato sauce that felt a step above what you'd typically expect from a counter-service spot. The double IPA paired well with everything. The sangria was just okay; my partner found it a bit too sweet for her taste. Not bad, but not something she'd necessarily order again. A couple of practical notes: indoor seating is limited, so the experience likely improves with good weather, and the self-service model shifts part of the dining experience onto you. Good vibes, great pizza! Friendly staff! It's a pick your own place to sit/clean up the table once you leave establishment! It gets busy quickly in the evening. Two single stall restrooms available, community board games as well. Feel free to ask for ranch, it matches the pizza perfectly. One complaint was that the music was very loud intermittently, it was hard to have conversations every now and then. Parking is a doozy since this place is a little hidden, but I parked near seasons coffee and walked a bit and it wasn't too bad. read more

Visited friends in Sac and had dinner at the Federalist. I loved the setting and how open and airy it was, casual with picnic tables and self serve water, plates, silverware. It's an order at the counter and seat yourself established, though we reserved a spot the night before. The Ricky ricotta was delicious, fatty, cheesy, and sweet from the hot honey. The Stanford was fine but limp from the vegetables and under seasoned. Oddly, the mushrooms and salad were our favorite. My first night in Sac and my group decided to check this place out as it was highly recommended. It's a decently sized space, tucked away in between an alley. Immediately upon entering, the menu is splayed across a green board. They have a nice selection of beers, pizzas, and other bites (salads, grazing foods and even ice cream!) Tucked under the board are even some games, which I would recommend you check out as the wait can be long. Ordering was smooth and quick and was given a buzzer for the order. There are plenty of benches to choose from but they may be filled with plates and trash from other patrons as it is a "buss yourself " kind of place. There are staff that do help clean it, but when it gets busy it not be a first priority. They have what seems to be a wood fired pizza oven, which was cool to watch. With that said- our pizzas took almost an hour to come out, with the salad taking about half that. There was a large party ahead and our buzzer seemed to be broken so we weren't alerted at all until a staff member brought it directly to our table. We ordered the Pepperoni, Chavez, and Southside with an arugula salad. They were out potatoes so we didn't have a true Chavez experience. Pepperoni was our top choice with Chavez and Southside falling behind. The pizza did a get a tad oily but the arugula added a nice peppery bite. Chili oil and pepper flakes can be found among benches and were nice additions. If you're a spice lover like I am, then the chili oil has just a hint of spice at the end with a mostly neutral flavor. It was definitely really great to try, but I may explore more of Sac before coming back. Tldr: lots of bench seating, wood fired pizza oven, longish wait, decent sizes and tasty overall. A little hidden gem tucked away in an alley, literally. The Federalist has a super cool and casual vibe with plenty of outdoor seating that makes it perfect for a relaxed hangout, date night, or catching up with friends. They specialize in woodfired pizzas, and everything I tried was spot-on. I had the arugula salad, which was super fresh and lightly dressed, a perfect starter. I also ordered a side of their fire-roasted mushrooms, sautéed with herbed butter, garlic and fresh herbs. But the real standout? The Canadian bacon and pickle pizza. If you're a pickle lover, do not skip this one. The balance of salty, tangy, and smoky was surprisingly addictive and unique -- definitely one of those combos that just works. It was Friday night date night and we were looking to grab a pizza! Usually we do mod pizza but wanted to gamble on something new. So we came across Federalist and headed downtown. The parking lot is limited but we managed to squeeze in a spot. They serve many wood grilled pizzas, beers on tap and a few wines. I got the pepperoni pizza and my date got a build it yourself pizza. You get about six decent slices. I loved my pepperoni pizza because it came out hot and the pepperoni had some spice to it! They were playing some basketball games on the tv, they had bocci ball and plenty of seating with even some comfortable couches. Wood fired pizza, fantastic crackle and chew on the crust. I liked the topping, would have been nice if it was better distributed (on the Capitol). I love the butter they serve on the rosemary loaf. One suggestion in general is to rinse/quick soak the red onions with ice water or quick pickle them on the pizza and salad, as the raw red onion is just too much and completely overpowers the rest of the pizza or salad that it is on. The outdoor environment is great! Loved the benches, lights, and games they had on the side. Had a great time here for the first time. Alyssa was very sweet and kind! The pizza was super good and the ranch is house made!!! The Ricky ricotta had a nice mix of flavors and the fresh basal is the best. Over the years Federalist has kept making small changes and adjusting, through all this the pizza remains consistent and delicious. They're located in a giant blue, converted storage bin and have taken over part of the parking lot with a fun outdoor seating area that has a fire pit, picnic tables and some fun wood seating. While you can dine in covered seating in the storage building, it's all considered "outdoor" so dogs are welcome and you'll find them inside and outside enjoying the vibes alongside their people. This spot is also kid friendly and they have board games that are great for all ages. They can get very busy at peak hours, and seating can be a bit tough and wait times long- especially if you stop in right after a brew bike comes in. But, if you have time to chill and you're ok with chatting with friends or family while you wait for pizza, even these busy nights can be really enjoyable. On less busy nights you'll be able to find a seat quickly and pizza will come out a but faster- but it's all made and cooked to order so it comes out fresh and HOT. The pepperoni is out go-to and their seasonal Cuban sandwich inspired pizza is our favorite whenever they're available. They have a good beer selection and some other options like sangria. We always bring out of town people here- it's a great spot for quality pizza. read more

I will preface this by saying we were a large group and I understand that's hard to manage with a wood oven and a lot of pizzas ... BUT! We gave them our group reservation AND orders a week in advance. Then we called before we were heading over. And yet, as we arrived NOTHING had been started. They then had to ring up each order individually and started firing off pizzas one at a time. Some people waited two hours to get any food. And at least 4 of the pizzas had raw insides and had to be re-made. Some people didn't even get their food in the end because they waited so long and ended up sharing with another person who had food. It was ridiculous. The salads were fine, but not great. The meatballs were average. But the pizzas were terribly made. The cheese was too heavy for the thin crust and like I said earlier, many of the crusts were raw. Federalist is a unique spot tucked in an alley off 19th, but once you're inside, it opens up into a lively space built out of shipping containers with a great mix of open air and cozy charm. The wood-fired pizza oven fills the whole place with the most amazing smell, and the pizzas definitely live up to it. We ordered the Garfield, and after a few bites, I told my boyfriend it reminded me of lasagna. He laughed and pointed out the name, which made it even better. Rich, cheesy, and comforting, which hit the spot. However, I will note that the pizzas feel a bit pricey for the portion, one $18-$20 pizza was not enough to fill us both up, which was a little disappointing. Their IPAs are excellent. They're crisp, hoppy, and super drinkable. It's a great spot for local beer lovers. All around, a great place atmosphere to drink a beer, watch a sports game and hang out. read more

The Federalist is a vibe!! Love the open floor plan, with both indoor seating and outdoor benches near to fire pits. Very cozy feeling and the pizza is delicious! There is limited street parking and a very very very small parking lot. Food: The pizza here is good. They have some unique choices you can try. I went to Federalist Pizza for a post workout social with my gym instructor and my fellow classmates/gym members. The pro of this place is that the ambiance is very unique. You are basically eating inside a hollowed out shipping container. Plus, they have a nice outdoor fireplace area. The con of this place is that a) you have to pick up your own food and bus your own table and b) the price. In my opinion, they overcharge for food at this establishment. For example, they charge $21.75 ($20 plus $1.75 for tax) for a personal pepperoni and cheese pizza. The pepperoni cups were super spicy and did not stay on the pizza. Additionally, the cheese did not stay on the pizza, which made for a very messy eating experience. I can buy a cheaper personal pepperoni and cheese pizza at Costco or RoundTable Pizza. I wonder if the reason they charge so much food is because the cost of doing business in the neighbourhood of Sacramento, Ca, USA is very expensive. read more

While visiting Sac and arriving in the evening, we looked for spots still open where we could sit down, unwind, and that weren't closing within the hour. Doing a couple of quick Yelp searches, would love to come back for a Sac brew tour! After the first two spots were closed for private holiday events, we saw a sign that had an arrow pointing to pizza..so naturally we took that as a "sign". What a fun surprise to be greeted by Federalist Pizza ~ converted storage container vibe serving pizza straight from the oven with heaters/a fire pit, brews, creative Za' selections and appetizers, and games/kid-friendly toys. What a score! We quickly got cozy after ordering a Margherita, Ricky Ricotta, and their version of meatballs called Cannonballs. Service was spot on and with the storm that was approaching, it seemed like others had the same idea to get warm here too. The Cannonballs were warm and hearty, felt like my Dad was working with them in the back of house (he makes excellent meatballs, secret recipe!) Served with a warm piece of bread to soak up the remainder "Sunday Sauce", this appetizer scored a homerun. The Margherita was tasty and quickly devoured, but I was a bit puzzled by the Ricky Ricotta. I wanted to try something different, so I went with something I've never had before...pepperoni, ricotta, and hot honey. Unfortunately I think my order fell a bit short. The excess of toppings while presentation was stellar, were almost too over-the-top to where the pizza underneath and/or toppings were cold. While picking up the slices everything toppled off, and while I love a good scoop, it missed the mark for me. Quality ingredients, but there may be another way to drive this concept home for the price paid. Would def come back to try other pizza creations with hometown brews in such fun digs. read more

I assume the pizza is good but it's been 1.5 hours with less than 20 people and they misplaced our order.... So when you take that long to cook a pizza even if God himself made that pizza I don't think it's worth the effort of going. I complained twice about my order but was told to wait for our ringer to buzz. Then when we checked with the actual kitchen they said they missed our order. The cherry on top is that this is the second time it's happened to me and my girlfriend. Save your money, save your time. $100 for two pizzas and three drinks just to be forgotten about twice.
