My first time and all I can say is WOW! I ordered the Taste of Fern Gully with oxtails, jerk chicken, and curry goat with rice and peas and mac & cheese. The mac was ok but everything else was very good. I got way more rice and peas than expected. I'll have some leftover for tomorrow. The jerk chicken was very good but I was hoping for a bit more heat. They did give me some sauces to add heat, so that helped. The curry goat was great! Tender and flavorful. This Jamaican restaurant is a little gem in Kennesaw GA. Their patties are great, the curry goat, vegetables, soup is amazing fresh and amazing. The service is good here and it feels like home. The atmosphere is nice too with the authentic Jamaican music greeting you as soon as you open the door. I definitely recommend stopping by here if you're ever in the area. Ordered for pick up and was so excited. The food was not cheap. Based on recent reviewers we decided to give this place a try. I've been here before many years ago and remember enjoying it. Salt fish and ackee were so greasy we had to use a spoon to ladle oil out as we attempted to eat. The bag it arrived in was soaked in oil that was spilling form this dish's. It was also EXTREMELY salty. I've had this dish many times before and it has NEVER been like this. The plantains were hard and rubbery. I cannot for the life of me figure out why or how they managed to get plantains with this kind of nasty texture. We also got likely a child's serving of them. The curry goat was again EXTREMELY salty and mostly bones and gravy. Both of us got rice and veggies for a side as well. Rice and peas was dry and devoid of flavor. Also, why is there so much rice in each box. The steamed veggies were basically mush. We will NEVER order again and we will be sure to tell friends a family to avoid this place. I really hate having to leave this review. I have ordered food from this place religiously. Portions and flavor have always been on point. BUT MY LAST ORDER WAS FULL OF HAIR!! So disgusting!!! If you order a large oxtail $35 the lady who shows you your order before you leave will pack whatever side you order underneath the oxtail and drown it with gravy so it appears as if you have $35 worth of oxtail large plate. Before they prepare your order in person they have you select the tip option , easily tipped $15 thinking about family they may have back home considering recent hurricane in Jamaica. (Of course they check the tip to see how much they're going to put on your plate). As a black woman ordering and tipping they still skimped my food. A man normally orders and picks up the food for us and he noticed they skimped on the food. On a separate occasion a younger man was pandering to a y t customer offering to give her extra sides and drink for her wait and to walk it out to her car. When he finally addressed me (skinfolk) "did you pay for your drink" he curtly asked and went back to a kinder tone and the black woman behind the counter (not the older one that sits behind the counter she wasn't there that day) a Jamaican woman of Auntie age didn't flinch as he pandered to the y t lady. Well...I hate to do this but it needs to be said. I'm going to have to echo many of the reviews listed already. No need in beating a dead horse so I'll just state the facts. Firstly, I only tried this place bc the other place I was trying to go to ran out of what I wanted and I couldn't make it to a second place before it closed. I was not inspired by the reviews for here despite it's proximity to my house. So here it is. The food just lacked flavor. Period. I can't for the life of me understand the dry plantains. The oxtails were tender but that's it. No flavor. Gravy was more like brown oil. I just cannot in good faith recommend this place. Customer service was not horrible but was nothing to brag about either. I'll leave it at that. read more

We had their food at our office for a pharmaceutical-sponsored lunch and it was really the first time ever I'd had Jamaican food at the office. The Jerk Chicken was absolutely delicious and cooked so perfectly to do point of falling off the bone. It was nicely seasoned as well. I feel like Jerk Chicken so be appropriately spicy and bathed in Jerk seasonings that I constantly need to drink water while eating the chicken. That test was passed with this chicken. The plaintains were nicely cooked just like I like them. The cabbage was decently steamed and the rice and beans were a nice compliment to the Jerk chicken. We've eaten here three times, each time hoping maybe it'll be better than the last. We've tried the oxtails, curry chicken, tilapia and stew chicken and everything has been subpar at best. The first time we dined there the beef patties were good which prompted giving them another chance but the most recent order pretty much sealed the deal of not returning. The curry chicken and rice was extremely bland and the collard greens had way too much salt. It seems as the salt was used only on the greens and nothing else. A friend told me that this was his favorite Jamaican restaurant in the Kennesaw area. My entire experience was disappointing. I ordered the jerk chicken plate with three sides. The chicken was dry and not very flavorful. Our server was very lackadaisical. When he spoke, he mumbled his words, and I could barely understand what he was saying. After he took our order and brought us our food, he never returned to check on us. We had to get up from our table and search for him in order to get drink refills. Based upon the poor quality of food and substandard service, I would not return or recommend the restaurant. read more

Amazing Jamaican food! I had the small jerk chicken plate with white rice and steamed vegetables and even plantains. I hate plantains because I hate bananas but THESE plantains?!? I loved them! Small plate was plenty of food for me and even had leftovers. Ate the leftovers for lunch the next day and somehow the food got even better. My husband had the jerk chicken wings and he loved those a lot as well. The meat was falling off the bone and super tasty. The only downside.... the service was slow with few people in the restaurant. However, we were not in a hurry and the staff was super friendly. The kitchen appeared to be really busy with take out orders regularly being picked up. They do NOT serve alcohol here. They are waiting on their liquor license and that's hopefully happening soon. Very nice cozy Jamaican restaurant in downtown Kennesaw. My boyfriend and I love Jamaican food, so we were excited to see that there was one right up the street from our new home. We decided to give Fern Gully Jamaican Cafe a try on a Saturday evening. There is a small parking lot but I doubt it ever gets too full to find a spot. When I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly hostess whom I advised I was getting food to go and he directed me to the bar area. The bar area had a few seats along the bar and a few high top tables. There was an amicable young woman behind the counter whom assisted me. It was hard to decide which entree to go with since I was only eating seafood at the time and they had several fish entrees as well as a shrimp dish. I ended up ordering the Brown Fish Stew which came with 2 sides I had cabbage and macaroni and cheese. My boyfriend ordered the Jerk Chicken. My Brown Stew which was over rice and peas was very flavorful clearly cooked with fresh ingredients and herbs I enjoyed every bite. The cabbage was okay and the mac and cheese was also ok. My boyfriend liked his Jerk Chicken, they cooked it on the grill and added the sauce on top. The Jerk sauce is not as spicy as I would prefer but I guess they are trying to accommodate palates that can't handle spicy foods. My boyfriend had the collard greens and said they had a nice spicy kick to them. The food is pricey but you get decent portions. The Jamaican food here at Fern Gully Jamaican Cafe is not the best that I've had in Atlanta, but it is definitely the best in Kennesaw and the surrounding counties in my opinion. I read the negative reviews and unfortunately went ahead and ordered goat curry. It was bad from the start, the music was so loud I couldn't hear the guy who answered and he couldn't hear me. After several attempts to give my order I could just hope he got it right. At pick up, there was no one in sight to greet me and it wasn't clear where to go with a wall closing off the restaurant at the entrance. I followed the loud music and found the guy who took my order. It was so loud, I couldn't think, and he couldn't hear me asking him to turn the music down. After I paid for my food, he just hung around so I assumed my food wasn't ready. About 3 minutes later he looked up surprised to still see me and said, "Oh! Here's your food" and handed me my food that had been ready the whole time. It smelled so good I was excited to get home to eat. Extremely disappointed!! There were about 4-5 small bites of goat and the rest was big bones. The sauce was very good and I figured I could at least mix it with the cabbage and eat the plantains. Nope! The sauce had small bits of bones which made the cabbage inedible. The few small pieces of goat, the sauce, and plantains were very good. But, it was mostly bones and very little meat. I saw the owner had responded to negative reviews so I called and left a message for her to call me. No call, no surprise. Order was correct and they even made me aware that the jerk chicken I ordered was just the chicken (which I figured because it didn't ask to choose a side) but was nice of them to make me aware. I am so very upset that Ferngully is less than 5 minutes away from me . I'm upset because they are about to get a lot of my money . The food was delicious . The FOOD IS DELICIOUS ! My whole family is Jamaican and I don't like just any restaurant that says hey serve Jamaican food . Not all are delicious to me . However , Ferngully is amazing ! I had the oz tail and red peas and rice . I chose it because I determine how good a Jamaican restaurant is based on the taste of the ox tail . Ran across Fern Gully literally on accident so I decided to give'em a shot. I walked in to a clean yet empty place. I didn't notice a few people picking up to-go orders. The music was a teeeeny bit loud but not unbearable. The building has a bar area and the dine in area is an "L shape" nice and clean. I started with a beef patty, this would become the highlight of the meal. It's not those pre-made ones that you get in the freezer section. This was flaky and great, like I said, the highlight. So happy I found this place. Red rice and beans amazing, in an instant with one taste I was in my moms kitchen so good. The oxtail was perfectly tender flavorful in a thick brown sauce. This was the 1st time here. I ordered through Uber eats. I ordered the Large Oxtail with rice and peas and dumplings. I eat oxtail all the time from another well known Jamaican chain restaurant in Kennesaw or cook them myself. There was a big difference between the two Pros: Portion size was nice. Fortunately because they lacked the Jamaican flavors, you could taste the flavor of the oxtail itself. My order was supposed to arrive in 70 minutes, however it arrived about 30-40 minutes. Cons: Oxtail was lacking in spice (non existent) and Jamaican flavor for this dish The dumplings were very doughy with NO FLAVOR at all like salt perhaps. The rice and peas lacked flavor-salt, something. My styrofoam container was a mess. They could've at least wrapped the dumplings up and put the outside of the container. Please don't take this as a complaint or negative. It's just constructive criticism. That's why I didn't give you a low rating. That's the only way a business can improve.
