Lots of issues here. Second time in a week I left irritated due to Nobody coming to car to take order after 15 minutes. Im a disabled Vet, so getting out of car to order is tough. But at this place you dont really need too, you push the button and they are supposed to come and take order, kinda like an old car hop type place. This very young girls taking orders are more worried about socializing for long periods of time. They walk oast your vehicle numerous times without helping take your order. At first glance, Fidalgo Drive-In is a run of the mill former A&W or another restaurant. I tried it because of a coupon I received in the mail...fish n chips or prawns with Ivar's clam chowder, garlic bread and fries for $10.99 All I can say is YUM! The fish was absolutely delicious. Light batter on white fish or cod of some sort. The steak fries were perfectly cooked and the chowder was great! I also got the prawns and they were fantastic too! Next time I might try a burger...but every time I go in, the fish calls my name. The couple next to me ordered a shake and float both of which looked out of this world good! if you don't want to dine in, you can drive up and order from you car...and eat there. The only thing worse than the employees' attitudes is the food. The burgers are dry, the buns are stale, and the fries taste old. I stood at the counter for five minutes without being acknowledged; there were four girls working who each made eye contact with me but didn't help me or greet me with at least a "I will be right with you", just blatantly ignored me. I was eventually helped but with no acknowledgment that it took a long time. When the girl delivered the food, she dropped the bag on the the table, snatched the number and walked away without so much as a "thank you". Just had a halibut sandwich, and I should have asked that they NOT put it on their terrible "ciabatta" bread(which was what the crab sand was on). The staff is always pleasant, and when the place stopped being an A & W, it was in their contract that they still sell their root beer. Too bad the "freeze" I got had no root beer flavor. The drive-in part was really fun, except our speaker was pretty shoddy and our neighbor in the gigantic Escalade decided to park diagonally which made me generally uncomfortable. Not the drive-in's fault! We had many cheeseburgers, as well as a bacon cheeseburger (bacon wasn't particularly noteworthy), the clam strips basket and a Dungeoness crab sandwich. The burgers, for the price of about $3-4, were incredible. The ordering options were "Deluxe" (with fresh lettuce, tomato, etc.) or "Classic" (only ketchup & mustard & pickles). The vegetables on the Deluxe were very fresh, and neither one skimped on the condiments. The clam strips were huge and definitely not frozen. They came with a tartar sauce, and the accompanying very good fries came with ketchup. Speaking of fries, you have about 6 different choices of fries including waffle, steak, and curly. Doing justice to the potato, if you ask me. The Dungeoness crab sandwich was kind of unbelievably good. I am a well versed crabber and this stuff did not taste frozen or canned, it tasted really fresh. It also didn't taste like a crab cake with a bunch of bread and filler, it was just pure Dungeoness crab. A+++ I would definitely go here again! Holy mother of crab, this place was delicious! After a long, relaxing weekend in the San Juans, my boyfriend and I were dreading the drive from Anacortes to Tacoma. Thankfully, my filling experience at Fidalgo made the journey a tolerable experience. I had the crab sandwich, which amounted to a giant lump of buttery crab, wedged between a bun. They're tater tots are fantastic. The employees are friendly too. The only thing stopping this from being five stars is the environment. Kids go here a ton. No, it's not 5 star cuisine, but it's fun and it's nostalgic. I used to come here when I was a little kid, back when it was a franchise. I don't care what they serve, I LOVE being able to drive up to the speaker box and order some burgers. This place is an institution and as a local, I'm grateful for it. And there ARE some great things to eat here. I can confidently recommend the blue cheese red onion deluxe burger, the breaded halibut sandwich, the fried mushrooms, and I love that root beer milkshake. This was pretty crazy good. The crab burger is something special, and tastes totally fresh caught. It's made from pure crab and seasoning, I think. Really incredible. The burgers are also a perfection of the standard, juicy without being overwhelming and covered in pickles and condiments. We got a ton of burgers, clam strips, and the crab burger. It used to be an A&W restaurant ages ago, but the local franchise owner wanted to keep his own local food on the menu (like the Crab Burger) and so he changed it over to the Fidalgo Drive-In. The rotor floats are awesome and super generous portions, the burgers are fresh and juicy and so very good. It's better than any other burger place in town. It's a great place for a large family or whatever, it may take a little time to get your order, but it's all made to order so it's good and fresh when you get it. We stopped for lunch at this place and yes the girls were cute and very efficient but the food was terrible. I had the blue cheeseburger and the patties were cold and the blue cheese in between them was not melted and there is just barely a slither of mayonnaise on one of the buns. My wife had the deluxe cheeseburger and meat on it was also cold and the cheese was not melted. Our dog was fortunate in that he get to eat most of our lunch because we felt it was uneatable. We live in Seattle so Fidalgo is a regular weekend getaway spot for us. We like the shakes here so while visiting with friends we decided to stop by for a quick dinner. During which a brunette waitress was so rude to us we complained and she began yelling at our friend and fighting with us. All because we thought we were missing an item but we found it and apologized for the hassle (apparently she took this as a personal attack and that we "accused" her). The other girls working seemed embarrassed on her behalf and came outside to apologize to us. The food is ok but if that girl is your server, buyer beware. read more

I liked it. The food was very much Drive-in style food. The floats and shakes were made with good ice cream and had lots of flavor. The burgers were cooked to order and were garnished with fresh tomato, lettuce and onion. We also had their crab sandwich. This was also a great choice. The servers were friendly and the service was really quick. The only bummer about the pace is the lack of a car culture. We went on Friday night at 8 pm and saw only suv and family haulers. I got the doubled bacon cheeseburger. It was good, decent meat portion, fresh lettuce and tomato, the chest was a little different. It was melted on to the bun, not the meat which made the burger a little dry. It also made me wish fort the melted goodness of cheddar. The tots and fries were crispy and salty good. It was a little odd to watch the employees parked in the car hop slots. You'd think that they would want to keep those clear for paying customers. The food was good and a more than you would expect from a drive-in/fast food place. Had a selection of burgers, corn dogs, regular fries, curly fries, tater tots, soup, and root beer floats. All was good. The root beer floats were huge! The tater tots were crispy and probably the best I have ever had. The soup was Ivar's, can't go wrong there. While we were waiting at the table (not even 3 mins after ordered) my two years old screamed because he was hungry and my husband told him to stop screaming. I enjoy getting take out here. Their root beer floats are good, as are their burgers. The large burgers are very large so bring your appetites or order the deluxe burgers instead. We were on our way home to Oregon. We had been traveling two days and I really just wanted something better than fast food, but still we did not have a lot of time to get a meal. We spotted the Fidalgo and decided to give it a try. We loved that we could order from the car, but ended up going in as the menu was so extensive, I had questions. After a lovely discourse with the counterperson, I ordered the chicken Cobb no bacon with blue cheese dressing. Our counterperson let me know it was a lot of food, but salad sounded so good to me, I went for it so glad I did. My SO ordered the 2 piece fish and chips, which came with a cup of clam chowder and grilled bread. The portions are over the top, my salad went for two meals, SO could not finish his, the pieces of fish were large. He said the clam chowder was the best he had ever had. My salad, was amazing, lots of crisp romaine, black olives, real blue cheese, whole grilled chicken breast and a whole egg. We thought about getting some thing for our dogs and they suggested pup patties, perfect, just two grilled hamburger patties. We may not get back to Anacortes WA for awhile, but we will definitely dine at the Fidalgo when we do. read more
