No sign, No hostess, No problem. This place is awesome, the owners are so nice and welcoming. The food is cheap and absolutely delicious. It's obvious these recipes are family recipes. They've been open for 26 years in the same spot and there is no sign. A place that can survive 25 years without a sign and run by 2 people in the front, is amazing. The red sangria is fantastic, very fruity and served ice cold. We had the black bean soup, very smokey, all vegetarian and organic; the guacamole, very fresh, creamy and delicious; and one of the combination platters. The mole is very good and more than enough food for 2 people. Today I went there at the normal opening time. At 5 o' clock. NO ONE THERE. There is one light on in the back. At 5:15 a person from the back sees us and opens the door and says, " Come in." No sorries or anything. He takes our order at 5:30. I order 2 tacos with lettuce and rice. The other people with me get their appetizers at 5:50. Not bad. The real food comes at 6:10 and I'm already hungry and as hell when I get it. The ground beef is ok and the lettuce is shredded, which I like, and the rice is crispy. I wanted to like this place...really. I've lived in town four years and have been wishing there were Mexican food in town. I had no idea this place was there. "Blink and you'll miss it," is right. Anyway I called ahead and ordered cheese Enchiladas with red sauce for take out. The price of $14.50 was okay for take out but honestly a teensy bit high given that: Mexican is a lower price point to make (rice, beans tortilla comprise 80% of dish), the place doesn't seem to do a brisk business (I was the only person in the entire restaurant except for the one employee I saw), and the presentation was the sloppiest I've ever seen. Before I get the food home I notice that the bag is dripping red sauce all over my car. Sloppy to-go packaging. Very flimsy to go plates/covers. She stacked the smaller but heavier rice/bean plate on the larger emptier enchilada plate. Flimsy as the ware was the smaller plate collapsed the top of the enchilada platter and created a huge mess. Now, after that happening...I can't be for sure what the presentation was before disaster struck but I can say that the mess can't account for the red sauce looking more like a vodka sauce in color and texture. There was so much sauce (even with all the spillage) that I couldn't see the enchiladas. Anyway, I plated the rice and beans and scooped out two soggy enchiladas. I will say the taste and texture of the rice and beans were right on-the rice even had a little heat that was nice. The enchilada also tasted fine but the texture and appearance grossed me out. Came here for Cino De Mayo and it seemed like they weren't used to a crowd. It took a few minutes to get seated which was okay, but as we waited several groups of people came in the door creating a very cramped area near the door with about 10 people waiting for a table. The service was friendly, yet slightly aloof. I ordered tostadas, which for 15 dollars I felt it was a rip off. There were three tostadas which was fine, but I would have thought there would be rice/beans with the food. I will say that the chicken in the tostadas was cooked nicely though. My brother ordered tacos which had no toppings other than lettuce. Overall, it was okay, but I probably wouldn't return. read more

One of the best Tex mex in New Jersey. They used to have three locations and now this is the last one left. Straight up nothing fancy just yummy melty cheese goodness. The nachos are outstanding - a round tortilla that's been broken up into triangular wedges with a thin layer of refried beans over which some cheese is melted and with a smattering of minced jalapeños. Equally good, but different are the lighter and fluffier cheese crisps. The pork is outstanding especially in the enchiladas. Not a big fan of the chicken. The salsa is yummy and spicy, and the chips are crispy and made in house. We careful to not get filled up on them! read more

Not sure what all the fuss is about this place - we dined on a recent Saturday night and were thoroughly disappointed. Service was appalingly slow and most everything we tried was bland and underseasoned. The two servers (I'm guessing the owner and her teenaged son?) just could not handle the workload in a semi-full dining room. It took 20 minutes just to get them to take our drink order, and when the young waiter finally did come over, he did not even so much as greet us with a "hello" - he just stood there and stared at us with his notepad in hand until we told him we wanted to order. He later came back (sans drinks) to take our food order and it was not until the guacamole arrived some 30 minutes after that that his mother realized he had forgotten our drinks and we had to reorder them an hour into our visit. It then took another 30 minutes for the disappointing entrees to arrive. The guacamole had little flavor or kick, and came served on a bed of shredded lettuce that made it unappealing to eat with the tasteless, unsalted chips provided with it. The chicken tacos and tostadas were better, but bland. While perfectly cooked and moist, the shredded chicken in both dishes would have benefited from some basic seasoning. The beef tamal was also just ok (it was cooked in the same funky tasting salsa served to each table), but the margarita was good. Of course after we were done, it took another 30 minutes to get the check. I would have given it one star because of the horrendous service, but I thought the tacos and margarita at least merited two. read more

Here we had chips (no salt = no flavor) and salsa (tasted like tomato paste spiked with tabasco), nachos (possibly velveeta melted onto the same flavorless chips with jalapenos and refried beans that tasted stale) and chicken tacos (chicken filling tasted like it had been poached in water with no other flavorings, again gross velveeta-like cheese) and diet coke (maybe store brand, flat soda - GROSS) Overall I thought it was the worst Mexican food I have ever had out. There is no sign on the building, you will seat yourself, there is usually only 1 waiter, the establishment is never packed and it's kind of quiet inside. You do not come here for speedy service or cheap food. You come here for the amazing, authentic Mexican Food and Drinks and I wouldn't have it any other way! One of my ALL time favorite spots. Period!! I'm in my 32nd year of life and have been eating this food for 33 years!! My parents first introduced me to the cooking of Fiesta Hut in Paramus many moons ago and I've been hooked ever since. Unfortunately for me the Paramus location closed a long time ago (McDonald's opened there, Big Thumbs Down!!) and I now have to drive a good 45 minutes for my Mexican fix. The food here is worth every pain staking minute in traffic!! Trust me. This place won't be jumping out to you for your business, you have to know it's there, in fact most times it doesn't even look open. There's certainly not a neon green cactus tree or Corona sign with a sombrero trying to coax you in the door. Find it!! and Eat there!! The business is family owned and run. Recipes unchanged and absolutely delicious. Some of my favorite menu items include the Nachos (they're not piled high like TGIMcfunsters) simple, easy and delicious. The Chile con Queso (it may actually be Chile Y Queso on the menu) is a delicious concoction of homemade red sauce and cheese melted into a dish ready to please the masses. Entree portions are more than adequate and rice and beans are offered I think at no extra charge. As much as I adore the food here I must tell you the service can leave some people with a bad feeling. Reading some of these other reviews certainly highlight an improvement point for them. But I must say to all the people that are complaining is sit back and relax, it's not the quickest service, but I have two recommendations to help you deal with it: 1. Order two drinks at a time. 2. Guacamole is always good, Nachos even better (made on a thin crust, like a small pizza, not too filling & you'll wish you ordered two), enchiladas, burritos, tostadas, etc, everything is better/more authentic then any of the 25 other Mexican places I've experienced. Before they closed the Route 4 Paramus location, I was a frequent diner there. Once the location closed, I became a frequent diner in East Rutherford, I also frequented Mamacita's in Ramsey until it too closed. Last night, I brought a friend, who said she would never go back. The host/owner had an attitude problem and looked like he just rolled out of bed. CCQ, which was always one of my favorites is now more salsa than cheese and the enchiladas and burritos are 1/2 as thick as usual. The Restaurant is not kid friendly. Some servers are friendlier than others but overall they don't show much appreciation for us as customers and we went there many times. I enjoyed my pork burritos with red sauce very much, the only thing I felt that did have made they better was perhaps some sour cream or guacamole. My girlfriend enjoyed chicken burritos with a spicy Verde sauce. The chips and salsa were good as well, with the salsa having just enough spice to it. The service was prompt and friendly, drink refills were fast and the atmosphere of the restaurant was quiet and relaxed. The only issue we had was finding the restaurant because of no clear cut sign outside. I would recommend to someone who is looking for Mexican cuisine to eat to check it out. read more

Update: The service was REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY SLOW. We got here at about 8pm on a Friday night and by 9:30, our jalapeño poppers and nachos that we ordered an hour earlier finally came out (and the nachos were room temp!!). We got our mains around 9:50 and it was OK. The margaritas were really weak and sugary. Not nearly as great as the first time. They did apologize albeit half heartedly and give us 10% off, but it was really unacceptable just how slow service was. Will probably never come back. read more

I am waiting to see if taco place opening down the street will be better. The food was average. The portions were on the small side. Their saving grace was the young girl working there. I wish I could give this place less than one star. I just had the worst evening courtesy of their waitstaff. I am 8 months pregnant. An evening out is a big deal for me, and standing for long periods of time is a challenge. So I called ahead and tried to make reservations. We were told we wouldn't need them. After waiting 30 minutes for a table we were seated. I was able to sit at one of their empty tables while we waited, so I tried not to hold that against them. There were two people working: an old hippie who was obviously high on something, and a younger goth waiter dressed all in black who was visibly frazzled running back and forth carrying only 2 plates at a time. After 20 minutes of waiting for our waiter, the drugged-out hippie, to take our order, the goth waiter recklessly slammed into my chair pushing my belly into the table. Mere words cannot describe the physical pain and psychological worry this instantly caused me. After taking a few minutes outside to compose myself, I waddled back to my table and sat down. My belly hurt, and I requested a glass of water. I called my doctor and started to count my baby's kicks. Fifteen minutes later, having received no water, my party and I left. The owner did not care to fix the situation and our hippie waiter seemed too stoned and freaked out to even bring me a glass of water. I went to my doctor's office, where I spent the duration of what was supposed to be my evening out, to see if these careless idiots had caused any real harm to me or my child. Lucky for them, baby and I are okay. I've got a bruise on my abdomen from the impact, but we're okay. This was this absolute final straw. Last time I was there, the owner tried to overcharge us $2.00 for every entree we ordered, saying the prices were wrong on the menu. When we told her we would pay what was actually printed on the menu and that its ludicrous for her change the price after the meal, she muttererd something under her breath in spanish and reluctantly fixed the bill. Not sure why we went back after that, but I'll never go back again. At this point, I'd sue if I thought this place was worth owning. Stay far away. read more

Thanks to all you Yelpers my husband and I wandered over to this little gem knowing the service is super slow. Slow service-check. Now that we have that out of the way can we get to the food? Authentic, fresh Mexican food is hard to come by even in Manhattan much less NJ. So we are thrilled to live near place where tortillas are made in house ever single day. Recipes are straight from Grandma's kitchen and even the salsa is a secret concoction. Pork is slow roasted for hours on end, flavored and spiced lovingly. I am a girl who loves her mole sauce and when I ordered it, I was asked if I knew what mole tastes like. Meaning, this is serious mole, not that crap they serve at Chevy's. And it is! Frankly, if you think a burrito should be as big as your head then this is not the place for you. On our first visit we began chatting with the owner, her son and, eventually, her daughter and after five times there we are treated like family as well. Everything seemed microwaved, soggy and bland. Guacamole was tasteless margaritas were just plain sour tasting at $8 glass. IL Mexicano on Main St and Mexican Cantina on Van Houten in Clifton makes this food look like and taste like dog food, Heck even Taco Bell outshines this place. I almost never write reviews but the reviews here are so far off the mark I thought it was necessary. Had the Cheese Enchilada, Bean & Cheese Burrito and Cheese Crisps w/ Chips & Salsa. All were exceptional.. my favorites were the burrito and crisps. The salsa was very unique and had a bit of a tomato sauce feel, but not enough to overpower the taste. The enchilada was topped with cheese, red sauce and onions. It was pretty good and I loved the addition of the onions. The cheese crisps presentation could have been a bit better if they toppings were cooked within the cheese instead of loosely added on top, but it still tasted very good. The red sauce topping the burrito was different than the enchilada's, and also very flavorful. The one minor negative is the wait time for a weekend dinner, but it is definitely worth it. The food at this place and the authentic feel of this restaurant will definitely keep me coming back. read more

This place is delish! Seriously, as Greg G said in an earlier review, it looks like a hole in the wall, but once you go inside, it is adorable. It has a very homey feel. The wait staff is really nice and helpful (ask for Nolan he's great- my friends have been here twice and are obsessed with him). Have the Sangria! The white and the regular are both amazing! The combos are good, there were six or so of us there and we all did combos and loved them. I had a Chicken Tostada (not my favorite thing but not bad), Cheese Enchilada and bean burrito. This place was probably the worst Mexican Spot I have ever eaten at. I kept waiting for the food to be spicy as is expected of "Authentic" Mexican Food. The salsa they brought out with the nachos tastes like watered down tomato sauce and with each bit I hoped it would be spicy. secondly it took over an hour for the server to even get to our table and take our orders. Hoping the food would actually be better as the place was pretty packed. For my appetizer I ordered the grilled jalapeños peppers with stuffed cheese, that was okay and didn't love it as I thought I would as the peppers were kinda soggy and cheese was just American cheese melted on to the peppers. For my Entree, I originally wanted a steak over salad only to find out they didn't have steak. So I instead ordered their chicken in red sauce with salad on the side. Once again I was hoping that as this place was authentic Mexican the red sauce the chicken was cooked in would pack a little heat and once again to my disappointment it just felt like watered down tomato sauce with very little flavor. So in order to salvage this dish I asked for hot sauce and again the hot sauce also was just not to my palette of spicy that I expect of Mexican places.
