The eastern end of Raveneswood and the far west end of Uptown are proving to have hidden gems that no written or visual media is advertising. You simply have to find yourself in the midst of a casual drive or stroll through some of the side streets and you end up stumbling upon various little oasis spots in the midst of residential dwellings. Such was the case with me wandering on Fin Sushi Bar, which initially looked like a business that had been closed. A bit empty on a Sunday afternoon, I entered to see what the menu offerings were. Ah, Pan-Asian fare and, of course, representative of Japanese and Thai. Spicy miso yaki soup. House salad. Dragon roll. Spider roll. Thai iced tea. The spicy miso yaki soup had the broth of customary miso soup. However, there were broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and jalapeños added. My palate is very non-American, so the soup was mild, even with the jalapeños. The house salad had the flavouring of what you get at many Japanese restaurants. The ginger dressing carried a hint of a fruit flavouring to it, something akin to the possibly the strawberries that topped the salad. Nothing artificial, just noticeable still. The dragon roll and the spider roll were more dismissive in taste than I have had from other sushi bars. I may be unfair because I was only a few days off the plane from having been to Japan and everything there burst with flavour on the tongue. So, I had an unrealistic bar set. I probably should wait a few months to let the allure of Japanese dining wear off and return for a second visit. I don't know how long Fin Sushi Bar has been open, but it has the feel of being relatively new. Of course, I see reviews dating back as far as May of 2011. The service isn't bad, just noticeably dismissive to the point of being mildly uncomfortable. For those who enjoy Pan-Asian cuisine, Fin Sushi Bar may be a wonderful experience for you. I finally had the opportunity to order takeout from Fin. I had the crunchy spicy tuna roll, miso soup and cucumber salad. Everything was delicious! The salad was a little awkward to eat but still tasty. The restaurant is BYOB so hope to make it in for dinner to check out more of the menu. Had a really enjoyable experience here with a group of coworkers. Grabbed some wine beforehand to take advantage of their BYOB and got our table. We made a reservation but during the week it definitely wasn't necessary. We ordered the bacon wontons and gomae appetizers. Both were very tasty and fun. I ordered the wasabi and chicago rolls. They were very nicely put together and tasted great. Lots of filling and a good portion. We ended the meal with mochi. Fin is amazing. I'm very picky about my sushi, it has to be super fresh with soft, sticky rice. Their sushi is great! The only other sushi joint on the north side which compares to Fin is Nori on Diversey. Best two sushi spots I've found so far and I've tried many. Best part about Fin though is their Pad Thai and delivery quickness. The Pad Thai is tangy from the lime, but still sweet. Chicken is nice and moist with a great taste. Every time I order through GrubHub my food arrives way BEFORE the estimated arrival window. I saw someone had the nerve to give Fin 1 star because they ordered GrubHub when they weren't even home based on the delivery time. Fin got there early, which is typical of them. Shame on you! Why would you order take out when you aren't even home?? And then blame them? Fin, I LOVE the fact you come early. Thanks Fin! I called ahead and asked if I could bring my dog to dine on their patio, the woman who answered the phone said yes the dog can be outside. When my fiancé and I showed up with our dog we were told that he is not allowed on the patio and would have to be tied up outside of the patio. There were no guests on their patio at all, and we left because I'm not comfortable tying my dog to something outside of the patio and then sitting away from him. You should let guests know that they can not have dogs on the patio period. read more

Just tried Fin for lunch! Awesome patio with shade from a big tree. I tried the Salmon bento box which was one of their lunch choices, came with a great variety and the tempura vegetables were amazing! The salmon had too much teriyaki but I just put it on a separate place and it was cooked perfectly. Will definitely be back soon to try the rolls! read more

This place is PHENOMENAL. BYOB with no corking fee. Expect a substantial wait if you come after 6:30 PM but before then, you have the entire place to yourself. Good for groups smaller than 6, though; ideally, groups of 2-4 will be the happiest. Bring at least 2 bottles of wine and plan on having a good time. The patio's up! I think it went up sometime in the first week of May? It's super cute. Highlights: tom yum maki, chillis, crunchy plantain, chicago wasabi, mango maguro, and snow burn. We love to get Fin whenever we want to indulge on an ungodly amount of sushi. The crunchy plantain roll is a unique one I've never found on a menu elsewhere, and one we always have to get when we are ordering from Fin. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu, honestly. Fin was definitely not as impressed with our group as we were with their rockin' rolls. But I'm quite content with an unrequited love. Their sushi is praiseworthy for both its authentic rolls and its twists on tradition. So what better way to profess my feelings than through a sonnet? Fin Sushi Bar, I love you so. The way you flawlessly execute your seaweed, Incorporating bacon, cream cheese and mayo. This place has more than ordinary feed. We cannot complain about Bring Your Own Booze. We're so thrilled you made our Sake warm. With so many options, there's no way to lose. And we appreciate that the waiters didn't swarm. Salmon and Ebi practically melted in my mouth. The rolls were truly meals made of dreams. But I fear our welcome eventually headed south. For after 3 hours you brought our bill and no ice creams. Thirty-three dollars per person was practically a steal, And the BYOB only sweetened the deal. So there you have it! I think I'll have to worship from afar as I'm a little afraid they might file a restraining order on our boisterous group. But I challenge you to not go into a feeding frenzy when you can get quality rolls for $7-15. read more

Up until my first visit to Fin, I thought the last thing Ravenswood needed was another Sushi spot (now we have a smorgasbord of selection in less than a mile radius: Katachi, Blue Ocean, Tank, Roong Petch, Umaiya, and beyond). Man was I wrong! Not only does Fin serve sushi but they serve CREATIVE sushi AND Thai cuisine in an eclectic environment (love the wave walls by Modular Art and tiny white candle on the single column near the window). Don't strut, the decor is very modern without being pretentious. It seems to be our neighborhood restaurant in the spotlight with families, dates, & anyone and everyone alike coming in for a bite of Fin's rolls. And when I say rolls, they have a extensive, fun list to choose from, not to mention that they can make your classic rolls as you request---including my favorite, Sweet Potato. I couldn't pass up their Spinach Roasted Duck roll which is created with their homemade duck, spinach, asparagus, jalapenos, mango and crumb. While being quite gamey tasting, it was delicious with the unagi sauce drizzled on top (see photo I uploaded). The Spicy Tako roll (spicy tuna, avocado, cilantro and crumb wrapped with spicy tako and tobiko) was absolutely delectable too. When you want spice, this is your best choice! However, the spice did not overwhelm the fresh flavors of the roll. We also had the Shitake Egg Rolls which were fabulous and the Tom Kha Soup which was tasty but still doesn't trump my favorite Tom Kha at Me Dee Thai a few blocks away on Lawrence. I hope to go back and try their vegan Crunchy Plantain Roll (fried plantain, cream cheese, avocado and cucumber wrapped with tempura crumb outside topped with unagi sauce), Honey Walnut Roll (shrimp tempura, asparagus, crumb, masago, avocado topped with walnut, honey mayo and red tobiko), & Bacon Fried Rice that everyone raves about here on Yelp. The staff is extremely friendly and smiley, which I always appreciate. I had lunch at FIN yesterday. The service was good, the food was excellent, and the sushi was fresh. The prices are just so-so, but they have a decent lunch special for 2 rolls for $10. The rolls are a bit small though. Spider was 4 pieces and Spicy Tuna was 6, I think. Both good quality though. Both the Tom Kha and the Tom Yum soups were SOOO delicious, with just the right amount of flavor. The Soft Shell Crab appetizer was pretty standard, but it was a good size crab, and artfully presented. The super white tuna nigiri and salmon sashimi were succulent- Like butter on your tongue! Seaweed salad was delicious, but I absolutely hate it when they fill the bottom of the bowl with cucumbers as a filler, and that's exactly what they did, but I'll forgive them because the server was so super sweet! My husband and I decided to stop in for dinner at Fin tonight after noticing the "open" sign finally blinking in the window earlier today. We'd been hearing rumblings for a couple months about the new sushi place opening in the neighborhood. Our server told us they opened two days ago, on March 1. The interior is modern and tasteful without being too hip (like many sushi establishments). It was actually pretty cozy inside, and the jazz music playing was a nice contrast to the lounge/techno that's a staple of the aforementioned hip places. They started us off with a complementary appetizer duo (I'm guessing this is a limited-time thing) of crab rangoons and a shiitake egg roll. The rangoons were a delight; I think they may have been spiked with bits of bacon. The egg roll was also very good; it tasted fresh and not over-fried. The menu offers a nice mix of rice and noodle dishes, entrees, and nigiri/sashimi/maki. For dinner, we had the salmon and lemongrass fried rice, as well as two of what they call irregular rolls: the chillis roll and the spinach roasted duck roll. Everything was obviously fresh and prepared with care, and the whole meal was very tasty. The menu of irregular rolls contains some unusual - but not off-putting - combinations that I haven't seen at other sushi spots. It would be marvelous to see Fin succeed in this spot, since the previous establishment didn't last very long. If they keep serving quality food, word of mouth (combined with a little self-promotion) should help them along. read more

Fin is a great addition to the neighborhood; good food, good service and reasonably priced-best $42 meal (for 2) I've had in a long time. They did a nice job renovating their space, although it will never be a palace, the ambiance is hugely improved over that of the former restaurant that occupied this spot. The menu is somewhat limited but I believe they've been smart about not trying to do too much and doing what they do with care and consideration. BYOB is a huge plus and the food is good enough you definitely need to leave the Yellowtail on the shelf and kick it up a notch. read more

First of all, they have a great lunch deal. 13.95 for three rolls off an extensive list (that includes a spider roll--yum!) and miso soup. Totally hits the spot. Oh Fin, where did you go wrong? We have had 2 poor at best experiences with (what used to be) our favorite sushi place. A few weeks ago, the beau and I went for early dinner on their cute patio. By early I'm talking 5:00. We were told without a "reservation" we could not eat on the empty patio. That's right. Empty patio, no reservation, no eats. The kicker was the host didn't offer the (mostly empty) dining room as an alternate. Just walked away. We had no choice but to go elsewhere. Cue last weeks takeout. I wasn't warmed up to the idea of eating in, so we called carryout. Upon pickup, the man asks my bf name, then hands him" Elizabeth's" food. He hands it back, clearly not an "Elizabeth". He then hands bf back the food insisting he sure is Elizabeth! They go back and forth (who doesn't love to argue over their order?) and 10 more minutes later,he is no longer Elizabeth and our order arrived. Which left much to be desired. Rubbery texture, warm fish, pretty below Fin standards. Sorry Fin. I'm certain you have lost our business after these experiences. read more

My husband and I were quite excited to see a sushi bar coming into the neighborhood. It would be great to see Fin succeed, as it is a great addition to the area. We tried Fin on its first Friday night. The restaurant was busy, which was good, and we had a short wait. The hostess/waitresses seemed a bit flustered, but were very kind throughout our evening. Once seated, we were brought a complimentary appetizer of edamame. Fin is BYOB (Awesome). The menu did not contain your run-of-the-mill sushi/thai options. The sushi options were unique, and the usual fare was not present. There were a handful of rice and noodle dishes, which each came with their own individual flair. We had the shitake mushroom egg rolls (excellent), sashimi appetizer (freshest fish we have had in a long time), bacon fried rice (sounds odd, but really comes together nicely), and a spicy meatball dish (excellent). If you are looking for cheap sushi or thai, Fin is not the place to go. But you do get quality ingredients served in an inventive fashion. I really hope word of mouth gets around and helps Fin succeed. We will be going back for sure! read more

I like Fin but I don't LOVE Fin. I guess for the amazingly cheap lunch deals I really shouldn't be complaining but I always feel their Sushi isn't the freshest which is disappointing. Tasty meal! The rolls are inventive and interesting. They are also vegetarian & vegan friendly. The plaintain roll was delish, and I recommend even the meat eaters give it a whirl. Awesome! As sushi lovers, my husband and I are so happy to have another option in the neighborhood. The prices are reasonable and the fish is fresh and delicious. The rolls on the menu are a combination of "standard" favorites such as spicy tuna and philly as well as interesting new combinations like the butter tuna (try it...oh yum!!). We had no problems getting a table on a Friday night at about 6, and when we left there was still space available. The service is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is bright and happy. WARNING: Their sushi rice is NOT gluten free and they don't mention that anywhere on the menu. Also our server was extremely rude. One of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. My partner and I went to Fin for lunch and ordered some basic sushi rolls (just fish and rice and vegetables). She has a wheat allergy so we asked for some gluten free soy sauce. The waitress then informed us that all of their sushi rice has gluten in it because they add stuff to it, which they do not mention anywhere on the menu. When we asked for a gluten free option instead, she acted annoyed and snippy. The brown rice sushi roll (their gf option) was mushy and did not taste good (plus she charged us for 2 full rolls instead of the lunch special we'd originally ordered). I was surprised that the rice had wheat ingredients in it since rice is naturally gluten free. I mentioned to our server that they should put that somewhere on the menu to inform diners since this is not typical. She then lectured us in a very rude tone that we are supposed to tell her if we have an allergy, and I explained that we assumed rice and fish and vegetables would not have anything added to it and this is not an issue at most sushi restaurants. She never asked if anyone at the table had allergies (a common question servers ask) and then was very rude to me when I suggested they add a note to the menu to make this clear so that other diners aren't confused. Instead of being apologetic and accommodating, the waitress was defensive and rude. She lectured us like it was our fault for not mentioning a gluten allergy, when rice should not have gluten in it. That's like if a vegetarian ordered steamed broccoli and the restaurant was like by the way, we cook it in animal fat and you should have known that. Honestly, I wouldn't have even taken the time to write this review if the waitress wasn't so incredibly rude to us. read more

If you expect anything beyond having your food placed in front of you, you'll have to take action on your own. If you would like your water glass filled, you will have to get up out of your seat, walk over to the sushi bar and do a short interpretive dance to get the sushi maker to find your waitress. After 5+ minutes, she will arrive, as if having been pulled from the deep recesses of the restaurant, feining surprize that you would actually need a server to serve you. Then later, if you would like some more salt for your edamame, you will have to get out of your seat again and repeat this process. Then later, if you would like the bill, you will have to go in for round 3. At this point, they have successfully worn you down and you will pass on dessert. And a word of caution: if you are by this time, sick of the getting up and sitting down; getting up and sitting down; getting up and sitting down; make sure you instruct the waitress to stay in your presence while getting your check together. Otherwise, you may be tacking on even more minutes to your already time-squandering experience. read more

The best meal I've had in a long time at a restaurant in Chicago. A friend and I ate enough food for a small nation, and absolutely everything was delicious. Bacon wonton - yum. Shrimp tempura, chicken satay, california roll - delicious. Mahi mahi and shrimp padd see-ew - both tasty. Everything tasted homemade and fresh and was well-presented. This has been my go-to sushi delivery place for a few years but I have been really disappointed with my last 2 orders. The $14 and $15 sushi rolls we like are now 1/2 the size that they used to be. When I recently opened the bag I couldn't believe it! And the pad thai was very so-so - not really any flavor. I put it in a pan and added spice to it. Wow, Fin's sushi was amazingly fresh and they definitely put a unique spin on their sushi menu, especially their items under the "irregular rolls" in their menu. Who would have thought to add bacon to their rolls? Something to try out on my third visit...The "Honey Walnut Roll" and their "Chili Roll." But anyways, their sushi portions are huge...I had to actually ask for more rice:) So yes, it's worth your money!! Not sure why the service was spotty reading other reviews but I found them really happy and helpful. Being there two times, my husband and I recieved their full attention and it's really nice hearing a "hello" in the beginning and a "thank you for coming" when you leave.
