My fried green tomatoes were thin slice and heavy coated with cornmeal. I had to order it plain because it came with pimento, honey and jalapeños and something else. What a find! This restaurant was so good my mom and I went back the next night fir dinner as well. The owners both made us feel at hone and were extremely friendly. We called and they squeezed us in the first night at the Cook's Counter. This view of the kitchen was appreciated. We could see all of the fresh ingredients and the calm among the three working in the small space making great food! We had the Pan Seared Dry Pack Sea Scallops with crispy roasted corn & brown but risotto cake. Served on top of sautéed spinach and roasted tomatoes and the Pistachio Crusted Red Snapper. First two times we went here food and service was great, but last time steak filet was filled with uneatable fat. I asked for it to be returned and replaced with another, but the chef declined. I was asked to order something else. I ordered the crab cake, which were not the crab cakes I'm use to. There was a great deal of crab with a pastry crust on top. Visiting from out of town and found this quaint little restaurant. Don't let the strip mall deter you. We did not have reservations, but they were able to accommodate us. I had the special; scallops in a red wine reduction. It was delicious. My son had the shrimp and my husband, the stroganoff. All meals were superb. We also thoroughly enjoyed dessert. I heard someone mention this restaurant in the same breath as The Tides and Yellow Dog, and just had to check it out. I heard some somewhat "snooty" comments about it being a converted diner/coffee shop, but all I cared about was the food, which I repeatedly heard incredible rave reviews about. We ate there last night and, quite frankly, it exceeded both my wife's and my expectations spectacularly!!! This place is the real deal!!! Roger Lord welcomed us and seated us at the counter overlooking the Chef, Chuck Arnold, and his staff of two. We always love watching food being prepared and chatting with the crew. Our waiter was Tyler who was fantastic. We had the sashimi and the house waffle special to start with, followed by the flounder which was exquisite. If you are in the Vero Beach or Ft. A VERO GEM. I am from vero Beach but don't live there any more. It is such a huge relief to come home and find these amazing restaurants popping up in my hometown! My mom, boyfriend and I went out to dinner here on Christmas Eve. We could not find a reservation anywhere (we got a late start on that hunt) and Fire and wine was one of the restaurants we called but they were full on reservations. However, after reading reviews, we wanted to take a chance to check it out because it seemed pretty amazing - and, SPOILER ALERT - IT WAS! We went early to avoid the super rush and I am glad we did. The other reviews are right.... it's in a weird shopping plaza but do not be distracted by that! Once inside it's a very cute bistro looking set up. There's is also an open kitchen with some seats looking in so it could be fun to watch the cooks! We were sat immediately and our server came over for our drink order. We decided to split the cheapest bottle of red wine and it was really good! Food wise, there were no disappointments. A few highlights - the rosemary rolls to start were amazing... I could not stop eating them. The French fries with the truffle sauce was also to die for... really, I almost died fighting everyone for more fries. My boyfriend had the duck and waffles which were full of flavor and a really interesting take on the popular "chicken and waffles" idea... I think the waffles were my favorite thing I ate the whole night... they were so fluffy. I had the crab cake and asparagus which was another great dish. My mom had fish, Im not a fish fan but she and my boyfriend did not leave a bite on the plate. All that to say, the food, atmosphere and service was amazing! We came in for my birthday last night and Roger, being the insanely nice gentleman that he is, squeezed us in! We sat at the bar in front of he open kitchen (which was really cool), the kitchen staff was really nice and helpful with menu choices; we shared the oysters and the sweet breads which were both spectacular and for the main courses we had the crab cake and the tenderloin pasta dish, yum! Terrible and over priced. I told the waiter I was vegetarian and asked what they could make since there were no vegetarian dishes on the menu. He went and spoke with the "chef" who said he would make me something with the sides and veggies they had for the day. I said that sounded great. What I was given was a plate of charred yet raw vegetables, some kind of veggie hash which was bland, beets that were over cooked, stewed tomatoes and the worst was everything was swimming on a plate of balsamic and pesto vinaigrette. It was drenched and soggy. Even if you had served raw vegetables it would have been better. When they asked how it was I was honest and said underwhelming. The guy then said that people "who know them" call a day in advance to request vegetarian dishes. That is ridiculous to me, a "chef" should be able to prepare something creative and delicious regardless if they're given a "heads up". My partner had a completely boring seafood pasta, he said it was bland and uninteresting. I gave them one star for the pear parsnip soup which was fine. The entire meal cost $91 with tip. Way too expensive. I have no issue paying for a great meal but this was just bad over priced food. Another bad mark is that we sat in the back by the door that leads outside and all night staff was going out to smoke and wafts of cigarette smoke kept coming in. Very unappetizing. This is a terrific little restaurant in the most unexpected of locations. Everything we had was terrific. Started off with a Ramon Bilbao Rioja Spanish wine. It was good, but next time I'll ask for the alternate wine menu with French and Italian wines. Currently, there are only beer and wine drink choices. We started with the escargot appetizer and soup of the day. My group loved the generous portion of soup and it's unique combination of flavors including pear. The escargot served with egg was a new take for me, and very enjoyable. Two of our group had the pan seared triple tail. We all loved it. I had the Faroe Island salmon. It was very good. Order the extras. The Brussels sprouts and asparagus were delicious. I didn't try the frittes, but they looked good. Service was excellent. The owner was present and casually engaging with customers. I have to give this place 5 stars again. If you are a Vero local, you know the city strongly lacks culinary experienced locals. This is the best restaurant in town, hands down. Try everywhere else and you will see. We have been here a handful of times and we have never been disappointed. Reservations are hard to come by but strongly suggested. The service has always been excellent. They change the menu seasonally so you have to dine here at least 4 times a year. Yesterday's pork ribeye left us speechless. What a treat!
