READ THIS FIRST BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO GET SERVICE AT FIRESTONE KAILUA 10/2/18 I went to Firestone to get an estimate to replace my failing AC compressor belt. The estimate was $157.99 for that one belt. I also asked for an estimate to replace all 3 engine belts for good maintenance. They told me the job would cost $431.97!! Over $400 bucks to replace engine belts is outrageous! I looked at the estimate and caught them red-handed trying to charge me triple labor ($105 labor per each belt)! I talked with the service manager, he apologized that I was correct that the labor time should be the same regardless for replacing one or three belts. The revised estimate was $221.97 to replace all three belts. Midas across the street only quoted me $180 for the same job, but Midas was booked up. So I agreed to Firestone's higher estimate if they could do same day service. I got my car back and everything seemed fine. But as I drove home, my belts started squealing a little bit. I thought the new belts just needed to be worn-in, but the squealing persisted over the next couple of weeks. I'm not a mechanic, but I do know cars well. I opened the hood and found that the power steering belt was super loose. I went back to Firestone and they said I needed an appointment to be seen. I insisted that they at least tighten up the power steering belt before I leave. So they did, but the squealing still persisted. They said it was probably something wrong with my power steering pump, but the pump was not leaking nor was it losing any power while driving. They were adamant it definitely wasn't the new belts and that I needed to schedule an appointment regarding the pump. So I left, but was very unsatisfied. I went down to my dealership for a 2nd opinion. The mechanic told me the pump was fine and it was most likely the belts alignment or tension based on the symptoms... he recommended that I go back Firestone and insist they stand by their work. So I went back to Firestone but this time I made an appointment so they couldn't reject my service request! At my appointment, they wouldn't check my belts' tension and they told me I would have to leave my car with them for the entire day. Ugh, another day without my car and more lost wages to deal with this issue yet again. I return in the afternoon and they told me that they replaced all my belts as a curtesy (my car was in the same spot I left it, so I don't know if they actually did any work). They said they were still unable to fix the belt squealing, but they were 100% absolutely certain the squeal wasn't due to loose belt tension. So then I'm handed an estimate for $756.96 to replace my power steering pump. He thought that would fix the squeal and asked me to authorize the new service and leave my car overnight (but he would not guaranty that this additional service job would actually fix my belt squeal issue). All my red flags went instantly up!! So I got the hell outta there!!! They made me feel like I was crazy for suggesting that they just needed to inspect the belt tension of the original service job. I kept thinking to myself, 'I know it had to be the belt tension, why would it be the the power steering pump?? that's one hell of a big coincidence that the pump suddenly failed after the belts were replaced!' So just in case, I got another estimate to replace the pump for only $270. I was so fed up with Firestone trying to rip me. They had wasted a ton of my time, given me absurdly high estimates and now were costing me lost wages, too! I was forced to drive my annoying squealing car for the next two months while I researched this squeal issue on YouTube and I finally narrowed the issue down to be the alternator belt tension... So today 12/16/18, I took a 12mm socket wrench and torqued the alternator belt tensioner... it took about 5 minutes of my time and it completely fixed the car!!! No more squealing and my power steering pump is working perfectly fine, too! The problem turned out to be super easy fix and I am totally vindicated from Firestone's incompetency!! I'm no mechanic but I figured it out... so it seems to me that any halfway decent mechanic should have been able troubleshoot this squeal in 2 minutes and fix it in under 10 minutes! But Firestone couldn't fix it... So my question to you: Are the mechanics at Firestone just incompetent or is it really possible that they left my belt tension too loose on purpose and then try to get me to spend an addition $700 for an unneeded bogus repair job??? You decide! But either way, I'm never going back there again!!! Moral of the story is I should have turned around and marched out the door right after they 'accidentally' tried to charge me triple labor costs for the original service job!! PS- But I really do hope they are just incompetent over there at Firestone because it makes me very sad to think that there may have been some real devious intensions to swindle me:( read more

This is a late post, I was so heated and in the moment when I first wanted to respond but gave it time before lashing out. I still feel inline with my experience and figure that others could benefit from the feedback. I had not checked Yelp before taking my car there when I did I saw similar complaints made of Byron. It infuriates me that the upper management still has Byron in a management position. Details of my experience: Called in car concerns, not starting on first try, at 0800 4/18/23, was told to bring it in and leave for the day to inspect and hopefully repair. Battery changed, starter replaced, oil changed. Asked for diagnostics to be run for the dashboard lights that appeared over a month ago when the positive battery connector was discovered to be corroded. Picked up at 17:10. Left with same dashboard lights, immediately called the store from the parking lot to ask why, no answer. The diagnostic fee that I was quoted to be $35 was not charged to me so I assumed it was never done, I wanted to follow up to find out why. I worked 12hrs Wednesday. Called back Thursday 4/20/23, call received by Byron, I calmly described the events and my concerns to Byron, his response was very off putting. He came across as reprimanded me, in his wording he pushed the blame on me for it not being done. I had clearly asked for it with the front desk person, Bill, and had a return verbalization that he added it to my work order. Friday 4/21/23 at 0715 my car would not start on the first try, same symptoms as Tuesday. I turned the key about 10 times. Got out of the car, checked the battery connection, leads appeared intact with battery. I tried to start the car again and after a few tries it turned on. I called Firestone, spoke with Lanaki regarding the issue and my concerns with poor service on Tuesday and Thursday. Brough the car in once Lanaki gave me the ok that they could check it, I got to the shop at 0945. I was irrate while having to walk through the slow steps of setting up a work order with Bill instead of getting Lanaki's attention that I arrived since he knew I had a time sensitive need to get the car back my 1045 so that I could get to a meeting in Waimanalo by 1100. Lanaki came across as patient, considerate and thorough. He reinstalled confidence that my car was being handled by skilled mechanics. He also verified that a new starter had been purchased from O'Reilly and he was able to produce my old starter for viewing. If one could bypass Bill and Byron and work with Lanaki for the ease of professionalism in communication then I would recommend them but since I had to return the car for the same problem, I don't recommend them when there are better reviewed mechanics in the same area. They did not run the diagnostics on my car in the short window of time that I had for the second effort to get my starter fixed. read more

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. They'll schedule you an appointment but won't get to your vehicle, but lie and say they're pulling it up on the lift. Was like 10 people in the lobby obviously upset when I went in and just grabbed my keys. Disappointed. read more

I took my Toyota in for an oil change only and they let me know my car battery was low and we needed to change it, that it may start having trouble starting and it could die soon after. We have had absolutely no problems with starting the car before. Not one time. As soon as I started the car to leave their location the car had trouble starting. I'm no expert but seems to me like somebody made sure our car battery needed to be replaced or that is outrageously convenient timing. I'll be going elsewhere to find out. read more

Took in for oil change on my scheduled day. Get there and am then informed that they don't have my filter in stock. Ok, not a huge deal, rescheduled. Brought in on rescheduled day. They "did the oil change". Got home, check to see if they did it because I don't trust them anymore after 20 years of taking my vehicles there and it's a good practice regardless. Dip stick is blackAF (the same blackAF as when I dropped it off). Called them, brought the truck back for them to see. Tech says "yeah, this is black, sometimes it's so black before we do the change that some of the blackness stays around. But we'll change it again because it's so bad". Now I take it back to redo the oil change and when I come to pick it up the cashier tech in the front shows me the "oil that they just changed" and it was looking brand new. She tries to sell me on some shi like it must've been black stuff "settled on the top so the dipstick was reading so black". Really? Settled on the top like milk fat right? Because the oil doesn't circulate to lubricate moving parts at all, it just sits in it's reservoir looking pretty and doing nothing all day? Don't trust this place anymore. read more

I scheduled an appointment to bring my Nissan Frontier in to get it's brakes checked and A/C checked. My appointment which I waited 2 weeks for was at 9am. I brought my truck in and waited all day to hear back from them. At about 4:30pm I called to check on the status and was told that nothing had been done and I had to wait for people with appointments first. I explained to them that I had an appointment scheduled that morning. At closing time they called to give a quote on the brakes and A/C. The price was way too high so I told them never mind. I had to pick up the truck the next day as the day had already passed. I drove the truck home thinking that the brakes sounded worse than when I brought the truck in. I finally got around to doing the brakes myself and the reason it sounded worse was because THEY DIDN'T PUT ALL THE BRAKE PADS BACK ON. The truck caliper was digging straight into the rotor. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. BAD SERVICE AND VEHICLE COMES BACK WORSE THAN WHEN BROUGHT TO THEM. read more

Firestone did a great job with my oil change. They squeezed me in when they were already booked up, which was really nice, as I was in a fine crunch. Jessy in the front and Caden working in the garage went above and beyond to make sure everything was in good condition and that I received stellar service. Especially because they're so busy! Jessy really kept her cool despite having numerous customers, phone calls, and work orders to juggle. I have been taking all my cars/trucks here for years, for small stuff like safety checks, oil changes, brakes etc. Last couple of times the service has been terrible, example- had 12pm appt to check a leak and they were supposed to rotate tires. Car was there 4hrs, no call nothing, I called and they said "its not ready", 1 hr later I get a call saying it's ready, I asked "so were you able to locate the leak." The service guy had no idea. I go to pick it up. The mech still has it in the bay, waiting to see if I was going to give the ok to fix the leak and do an oil change. So he pulls the car out of the bay and tells me the cars been in the bay waiting for the ok to do the repairs since 130pm. On top of this, the tires weren't rotated, and rotating the tires is part of what I paid for. The mech apologized and rotated the tires. I asked, "Could you have done the repairs today?" "Yes." One star since the mech was apologetic and said "His team failed. " will think twice before ever going back read more

My 81-year-old father-in-law is at that age where we may have to soon take the car away from him...kind of like a teenager. He can't see worth a damn. He has already taken out two mailboxes in our yard. He is retired military and thinks that all 4 wheeled vehicles should be driven like a tank. During his last four wheeling attempt in his Toyota Camry, he blew a tire. Good thing Firestone is within walking distance. We drove the donut tire car in and asked the man to "NOT" have the car ready for a few days, so we can buy some time to get our father-in-law's eyes checked. My wife's pops gets a bit testy without his beloved ride. So a few days off due to "mechanical difficulties" was the perfect diversion. Turns out pops needed some new glasses, and our flat tire was fixed in a record two days plus an oil change. Although I'm sure they had the bugger ready 30 minutes after we set foot on the property. I am so grateful for Rich and Jessy! I woke up at 5am today to get in line for my state inspection at Midas down the street, but Midas opened an hour late at 8am and told all of us in line that we were out of luck and to come back some other day. I stopped in to Firestone on my way home, explained my situation, and Rich went out of his way to help me even though they were fully booked for state inspection appointments. His kindness really turned my day around and I will definitely be recommending Firestone to my friends and family. read more

The short version: fast, efficient, friendly, and honest service. The long version: Saturday at 4PM I noticed the brake lights on our Honda CRV were illuminated even though it was parked at the curb. Fearing the battery may run down overnight, I quickly looked around for a shop in Kailua that might be able to take a look. My neighbor recommended this location on Hamakua. I called, described the problem, and got a straight forward answer that, depending on the nature of the problem, they could possibly take care of it right away. Five minutes later I'm there and ten minutes later Rich has fixed the problem and is writing up my bill for less than $20. We called and they told us to just bring it by later and drop it off. When they did they said they would not service the car and that "things had changed". Great customer service, no run-arounds, only downside is they can take a long time. Also I should mention I've only gone here for oil changes and brakes. But one time they replaced my brakes for free. It had been 10 months (warranty was for 12) and they started squeaking so they gave me new ceramic pads, no charge for parts or labor. read more

I was skeptical after reading other reviews but they were open on Sunday & could fit me in. I wasn't sure what was wrong but they did an over all assessment for $15 and determined the main problem was old tires. I did have to wait a long time, but their customer service was good and courteous. They even stayed open 30 minutes after closing time to finish my car. read more

I bought 4 new tires at Costco and was directed to Firestone to get an alignment. My car has no symptoms of misalignment but it's recommended when new tires are installed. I wasn't excited to go there because of past experience and a reputation for them recommending add ons. Especially women customers. BUT against my better judgement I took my car in. I was told that it would take 1 1/2 hours. So I had my nails done and came back to hear that my front did not need alignment but the back did and it would involve parts (shims). I was told it would take an hour or two. I had a friend pick me up. I came back (via another friend) 4 hours later and my car was untouched. Lots of excuses but no work done. They had my car for a total of 5.5 hours and did nothing. The next day I made an appt. at Goodyear. They aligned both front and back. No add ons. No mention of shims. Done in 1/2 hour! It was cheaper than just alignment at Firestone. I purchased the Goodyear 3 year/6 x alignment plan. I recommend them. (Kailua Store). Very pleasant experience! read more

I got a flat tire the other day, and I was nervous about driving too much further on the tiny spare. Caden was very friendly and welcoming. Ian is amazing. He went above and beyond to make sure I was back on the road safely. The electricity went out in Kailua, and Ian brought out the hand tools and jack to get the job finished. Nothing was going to stop him from getting the job done right. From the outset, he treated me respectfully and professionally. I wasn't just a number on a work order; I was a person. The husband wanted to go to Kailua this past Sunday........he wanted to find the beach.......by memory.......it has been well over 20 years just "cruising" around Kailua.......see where I am going? Well, we couldn't find the beach, I did not grow up on the windward side and am not familiar with anything except maybe how to get to my Aunty house and how to get back home. Maybe if I'm lucky, I would find Windward Mall in Kaneohe, but I digress..... We got a flat tire. Ugh, really?! On a Sunday?! In a town I don't know?! In MY car!?!? I was definitely up a creek without a paddle. Who do I call? Where do I go? Most Importantly, Who is OPEN?! Time to bust out Google..........Boom........Firestone on Hamakua is open. Where the heck is Hamakua, runs through my brain. Called them and the guy who answered said he needs to see the extent of the flat tire, if it is salvageable and it is going to take a good couple hours.....they are busy......REALLY busy. I'm like, okay, I have no choice, gotta do it! Husband and a good samaritan put the spare tire on and off we went to Firestone. Checked in with Rich, he pulled out the flat tire, looked at it, found the shiny nail in my tire and said........"Yes, we can fix this, but it will take a couple hours, we can call you when done". I'm like okay, we can walk around Kailua town now. My husband on the other hand was more upset with me and how my tires looked (he said they were bad). Anyway, i digress again...... Ate lunch, walked all over Kailua, within the vicinity of Macy's, Target, Long's, practically any store with AC, until I was too tired to care about what I was looking at and talking to complete strangers in Japanese. I just wanted my car back. Besides, I had to listen to my husband go on and on and on about how bad my tired looked and it is time I changed them. Rich from Firestone was almost done with my car and all that was left was checking the rest of my tires and my spare. We waited only about 20 minutes (we just went back instead of waiting for the phone call). It was only $20 and no new tire needed at this time (take that Husband :P). I'm so happy with the service at Firestone right now. Yesterday I made an appointment thinking I was going to pay an arm and a leg for my maintenance but they quoted me literally half of what I was expecting. When I brought my car in this morning they gave me 5% off for no reason I can think of. After diagnostics they gave me an additional $100.00 off because it turned out to be something other than what they thought it was, while they were finishing up they found a few more things to fix and just did it for free, since they quoted me a cheaper price they stuck to it. Check engine light was on and cruise light was flashing. The car was hesitating and had a ping under acceleration. I agreed to pay $99 for a computer code scan. Diagnosis was remove and replace camshaft timing solenoid $823.97. They ordered parts were on order. They also recommended changing spark plugs $514.94. Additional recommended service brought total estimate to $3,821.71. Although I made arrangements to have them change the sensors I brought the car home and changed the spark plugs and air filter myself under $100.00. After I finished my work and started the car the check engine light and flashing cruise light were gone. No hesitation no ping. Disappointed that the computer diagnosis seemingly mis-diagnosed the issue and recommended service rendered my car a total loss. read more

Last time I went here, I went in to get an oil change. And I came out with a huge crack in the radiator. My car over heated and blew the gasket. I had 2 mechanics look at it and they both confirmed that someone intentionally cracked the radiator. Firestone was the only person that was under the hood near the radiator that day. I do not trust them! I'm glad I found an honest mechanic because firestone sucks! read more

The Area Manager reached out to me after my original review, and Firestone stocked and installed the original tires I had wanted for free. As I said above, this location is as great for quality and punctuality, and I'm glad their manager was able to correct the problem caused by the corporate inventory system. read more
