Brought my VW Bus to the island with a Subaru Conversion, car was running great but I was looking to build a relationship with a local VW expert to help me further restore the bus, so wanted to start with a small job such as repairing the steering column or etc. Brought it to this place from a tip from a restaurant supply store on the other side of the island, but did not check the yelp reviews which I now deeply regret. Learned from a local that this place had quite a history, and rushed to get my bus back, however the damage had already been done. It's unclear if it was from truly poor communication or just poor workmanship, but the radiator protective cover was removed/cut down without my approval, I only asked that a plan be put together for possibly moving the radiator. This left the radiator vulnerable to rocks, at which point it was damaged and caused the engine to overheat, destroying a brand new Subaru engine resulting in thousands of dollars of damage. Dealing with VW Buses is problematic anywhere as they are un-reliable vehicles, and of course a non-standard bus like my own requires extra care in addressing. I would caution anyone looking to repair their VW Bus to heed the warnings here about the quality of the communication and the results of repairs in other reviews. In general I try to interpret even poor interactions as generously as possible, as my need for great local support and contractors is high, so I was extremely disappointed with this interaction. The benefit though is that many locals who have had this shared experience have pointed me to better options. read more

This is the only affordable and reliable place on the island to take a European car. I love Malia she is a quality person and mechanic! She only does what is necessary, doesn't make up things to fix and charges reasonable rates especially compared to other places in town where I paid at least double before i found this shop. THANKSGIVING time so called All auto shops in Kailua & no one could fix my 4Runner anytime soon! After a rear tail light & cover were replced at an auto body shop....electrical was shutting down one thing after another: no blinkers, no AC, ABS brakes were clunking & finally alternator & battery went! I was bummed as no one at body shop could figure what went wrong. They sent me to BES. Tests were not showing problem but Bear forund a smashed wire from light grounded to metal was causing shutdowns! HE FIXED ALL DAY B4 HOLIDAY :) ALL IS WELL AGAIN!!! I'm not a happy camper!!! brought in my car, they lowered the passenger window and it got stuck- no their fault, but they left it outside without a plastic cover for window and passenger side filled with water, ruined my owner's manual (hard to find even on ebay) and didn't even sponge out the water. Then they left it on the street and got a parking ticket and didn't tell me, so i got a summons and had to make a special trip to court to get my registration. BOO!! After reading the other reviews I was in shock. I took two different Vw van there ranging from new window to rebuild of a head and he did two mufflers rebuilds and he was super fair with me. Barry and his team are friendly and cost-conscious. Their shop is located across from Kailua Computer Repair, but it is very unobtrusive so you might miss it. Look for the VW logo and a chain-link fence. In fact, they're so low-profile they weren't even on Yelp until I added them for this review. I wish we'd known about them sooner to avoid all the cross-island car juggling last year! If Barry doesn't answer his cell, try again. Sometimes it's not charged, or he can't find it, or he can't get to it from under a Vanagon :) Just stop by and find him the "old-fashioned" way. read more

Worst service ever encountered. Had my car for two weeks. Kept saying it was fixed but never corrected problem. Parked my car on the street at metered parking. When I picked car up the gas tank was on E and parked down the street. Car preformed worse that when I brought it in and broke down. Multiple vehicles in crowded space and unsure if work was even done. Sometimes only one or two people working. Wanted to add additional charges to repair after saying it was fixed. Communication poor and vague about when car would be done and what was needed. Customer service is lacking. Attentive when you come in but the empty promises and I don't care attitude. I read the horrible reviews online and decided to go here anyways out of convenience, so I was warned and did not listen. The owner is the tall one named Barry, the other people that work there are actually really nice and I would not be surprised if that's the sole reason he is still in business. Here are the cons of going here that I experienced. -Very unfriendly and will give you a run around with what is actually going on with your car, as well as just being overall rude and not caring about your questions. -He never answers his phone as well as has a full inbox. -He ended up losing my phone number as well. -He didn't even repair my car like he said and charged me 300 bucks for resetting my comp on the car; oh yeah and this took him almost a full week!!! I asked him what he had done and if there was anything wrong with my car he said he didn't see any reason the light would be on like that. I went to two other repair shops and they said my suspension was shot and that was the reason the light was on, also that took then them looking at it for 10 minutes. - Also reading past reviews he almost killed a customer's dog in a van fire as well as citied by the city for illegal dumping in 2003 and has been investigated by KHNL again. She said her boyfriend knew Berry and that was mainly why she went here. She herself admitted that Berry had done a poor job on several of her car repairs that had resulted in even further spending. ATTENTION to all about this auto repair shop. Please take a minute and read on. This place used to be called Bes Auto Repair. Since the owner is facing a bunch of lawsuit, he decided to change the name of his scam shop to Auto Correct. This guy claims to be a professional on fixing up old VW Beetles. Unfortunately, he is nothing but a crook. We had bought a 1978 beetle and took it to Bear's (owner) auto shop for break issues. We drove it in there with the hope of getting it back in a week, but instead; now 4 months later and $6,500. We just couldn't be anymore patient with this guy who has been putting us off for this period of time. All we hear is, " I'm waiting for a part to come by ups. Not sure when it's going to arrive. You should get the car back tomorrow." Well, unfortunately tomorrow never came for us to be able to pick up our car. It seemed like there was always something else that was wrong with the car. We had enough and called for a tow truck to get our car back today, the car won't start and the breaks don't work and a bunch of other things that is wrong with the car now. So now, we have to take it to another mechanic and pray that we don't get a repeat of the last guy. People like him should not be in business and needs to be reported to he better business bureau. Please do not go this this guys shop in Kailua. You will be writing a review just like mine. read more

This was the worst experience... If you want headache, heartache and don't want to see your car for a long time definitely take your car here. Don't get suckered into paying upfront payments to them because then they will have you right where they want you and you are stuck. They will seem nice and courteous updating you on the progress and promising to fix your car speedily and then when you have invested money everything changes. No more calls no updates and when you ask them about the progress They will make you seem like you are bugging them. Definitely expect their personal problems to come into play for why they can't get stuff done. It took 5 months for a month job on my car. They charge you $120 per hour and have no certified mechanics working there. I want on a test drive and had the motor shift because they forgot to bolt in the motor mount and made it seem like it was nothing. It caused more damage and made me pay for the part saying it was a old engine. This is a true story if you don't want to learn from my experience then chance em and see for yourself. My husband had shifting issues, his '69 VW Bug was having difficult time getting into first gear. He suspected he needed a new clutch plate. We have not had this antique in a shop before and had a hard time finding a mechanic we could trust. He brought his car to Barry on a Friday and got the call by Monday that the car was ready for pick up. The hubby got suspicious since it seemed so quick to get this call and when he went to BES Auto to get his Bug, they showed him a rusted old clutch plate on the ground, said that they replaced the plate and said he probably needs a whole new transmission. The gears were still "sticky" and they left the front console area a mess! Didn't bother to restore it to the condition it was at drop-off, just left everything unscrewed, dirt on the seats and left their screwdriver on the floor mat! They also messed with his distributor and moved the points, and told my husband they had to adjust it, it was off. It was not off, the last person to work on the distributor is a family friend who is an airplane mechanic, who also worked on VW Bugs in his youth and is expert at them. Too bad he is sooo busy or we would've hired him again. So it was drivable, but would make strange loud grinding noise in reverse - never did this before we took it to BES Auto Repair. The final straw was us getting stranded at Costco about a week or two after BES Auto touched it, it would not engage in any gear except reverse! Our tow driver recommended we get any transmission work done at Willy's Transmission, which we eventually did! Maybe back in the day Barry was more committed and passionate about actually doing what is needed to help customers get back into their cars, and drive off satisfied with an honest job well done. It seems money is the only focus for this business... We feel so ripped off and will never do business with him again. read more

Mahalo to Barry and the team for bringing my audi back to life. I took my car in twice now and both times were pleasant. Some say there is no communication, but they don't call until they can peacefully let the car go with any doubt that the customer will be happy. I took my car to another car place for an oil change and it came back to me broken, so I brought it in to BES and they let me know what was wrong, and fixed it. They do specialize in european cars, because not a lot of mechanics know what they're doing. Also they have the resources to get the parts needed, and that's a plus to me because the wait time for parts is not even close to what parts stores can come close to. But to let all know they are still mechanics so they do work on any type of car and truck. Lastly, the price is very reasonable, he does do off the head quotes, but he does follow them and you won't be sorry. To me it feels better when you can support a local business, and just because you have a nice car, that don't mean you have to be ignorant. Be nice, speak nice, and you'll get awesome results. I recently found out that he had to change name and ownership to his daughter due to all the problems and issues he's having with his business. The new name to the shop is Auto Correct. I warn all and every customers to stay away and do not take your car here!!!!! I had the worst experience ever in my life. I was referred from a friend so I took it there but nothing was being done and it was taken to another shop by them. I find out that my car was towed and ticketed. They should have been responsible but refuse to pay. Another thing I noticed when I was at the shop, they park customers vehicle on Kainehe Street and boy the cars had tickets left and right... When these tickets are not paid on due date the district court will come after you 2 years later!!!!! Be aware. After I read the reviews that he's got unresolved complaints with the better business bureau I got curious and found out on public records that he doesn't have a drivers license. You might want to check on your own... How can you trust a mechanic without a drivers license??? Test driving your car??? I wouldn't even rate this place with 1 star, it would be more of zero!!! On another review it stated no certified mechanic, how scary is that!!! It seems like the daughter has a certification but what does she know and he sure does not have a legit certification it seems... This place is definately not fancy. There is no waiting lounge or other customer amenities. I have an old bug and the owner really knows VWs. I've been taking my car there for years. I run all of their advice by my father who is a mainland VW mechanic and I have never been steered wrong. The prices and quality are good. NEVER go here! The list of issues is too long, but here are a few: After he fully assessed the car and my list of known/needed fixes Barry said the car would take a few weeks to be done. Over a YEAR later it was still there, deteriorating. I had moved islands and was, without pestering or getting obnoxious, checking in regularly. When I could finally get him to answer his phone he gave so many excuses...that were always of a personal nature (hospital stays, lost phone, problems with employees, etc). It was always some epic drama story. At the start he had a crew of employees; however, that changed to it being just his teenaged son, a relative and himself. One of several clues. I tried to give him the benefit-of-the-doubt. In the end, my rare, vintage car is so deeply scratched in so many places that the brand new custom paint job it had received immediately before taking it there now must be redone. Brand new very expensive parts I provided went missing and no reembursement or reason was given. A beloved, key vintage part was removed (only after I noticed it was missing did he tell me he broke a commonly aquired connecting piece and "didn't know where it -the vintage part- went")...he had replaced it with something that was so rediculously dissimilar and cheap it was mind blowing. He promised to fix the issue, but didn't. His charges were 5 times his estimate and half the required items were not done at all. One of his key initial statements were about making the engine run solid and reliably, but when I finally pulled my car from him it literally broke down a few miles away and had to be towed away. It now leaks oil, runs like total junk, handles and brakes poorly, and reaks of gas when driven. I have chalked it all up to thousands of $ flushed, a victory in keeping my cool, and a learning experience. Not worth the aggravation trying to recoup anything from him. Hot mess! I agree with previous posts about this shop, and I would strongly advise potential clients to think twice before saving money, but sacrificing your car's performance. Exceptionally poor communication on part order. Service area is really a mess and is completely packed with cars. The old TV show Sanford and Sons comes to mind. If you base your decision to come here on the BES Auto website, you'll understand the term deceptive advertising when you arrive. It feels to me that the owner spends most of his time tinkering with VWs since they are everywhere - on blocks, on lifts, in the service bay, etc. And given the complexity of European cars' electronics systems, I would strongly recommend taking your vehicle elsewhere. I should have known not to return to this place after my first visit to repair a fuel pump. The cap or seal device was incorrectly put back on, the liquid escaped into the passenger compartment of my car, and reeked for weeks after. Owner may be a local, but this in itself is no reason to feel obligated to patronize BES Auto. Spend the few extra dollars it takes for the peace of mind knowing the work you need done is performed correctly. read more
