We went here for Mother's Day on Sunday and had the rudest waitress ever. She would stop by our table and run away before we could even let her know what we needed. My son wanted to substitute fried rice for regular rice and she said absolutely not. He has done this several other times at this restaurant. She was not friendly and did a terrible job. Also, Mother's Day was on Sunday and they weren't honoring their Sunday special of soup with a dinner. That was so offensive to me. C'mon, it's Mother's Day. So cheap of them. The food was ok. As usual, the hot and sour soup that my son and I ordered was excellent. The wontons were a bit dry, but all of this is beside the point. We went in at around 3:45 today, January 14, for a little something to get us through until a later dinner. Our waiter greeted us with water and hot tea after an employee had seated us. When our server asked if we wanted tea, we accepted. He returned in about 2 minutes to take our order. The moment that he heard it, he appeared shocked and said with annoyance, "That's IT for dinner? Oh, God!" He rolled his eyes as he turned away. He was back very shortly with our soup. As he placed it on the table, he informed us that if we ever ordered again without purchasing a meal, he'd have to charge each of us $3.50 for the tea. Our menus were not at the table any longer to confirm that this is a rule stated anywhere, but it is nowhere on any of the website menus. The wontons came out a few minutes later--we were the ONLY CUSTOMERS, after all. Our server asked if the was anything else. Upon hearing that there was not, he placed the bill face down on the table, said "Thank you," then never returned, despite sitting down in a booth not far from us. We have not had service like this before at this location; there were always water refills and empty plates being removed. For a good meal, I still recommend First Wok, but I hope that this $3.50 per person pot of hot tea policy gets spelled out so that others aren't subjected to this individual whose tips are no longer taxed. By the way, we did tip him 18% in spite of his basic service and rude demeanor. read more

First Wok is a very solid Americanized Chinese takeout. I especially love their Lo Mein dishes and their Vegetable Mooshu. Dining at First Wok is really pleasant, as their staff is friendly, helpful, and very personable. Their portions are by far the most generous of all the Chinese takeout restaurants I go to. If I need to feed a lot of people and get my bang for my buck, First Wok is my first stop. Consistent and all-around good restaurant. read more

Big almond boneless chicken fan, I was very happy to find this on the west side of state and excited that they were voted best of the West! Really disappointed and it wasn't even edible. To be clear, the chicken was fine but the gravy tasted like someone has spilled kerosene in it. I wish I had tasted it before I dumped it on top of my chicken and rice. Luckily our house guests forgot their leftover pizza in our fridge. Could be a random occurrence, but I won't be giving this an another try. Just had my second experience at First Wok and both times were absolutely fantastic! The employees are very friendly, the food is extra tasty and comes out in perfect timing, even with the busy lunch rush! They are attentive to the tables, always refilling waters, taking old plates, etc.. they're also very sweet to my 1.5 year old I got the Mongolian beef and crab Rangoon both times. Their food is good, consistent, fast and the staff are really nice about giving extra Crab Rangoons on to-go orders! They also have nice dinner meals if you like to try different things. I usually get food to go but one of the two times I ate their with a big group of women, our waiter took great care of us and even offered to take our photo (which he snuck in lol). If you are looking for overpriced, super-salty, badly Americanized Chinese then this is the place for you! Our food was borderline inedible. The rice was mushy and the entrees so over the top salty I feel like I need to book an appointment with a cardiologist STAT. The egg-drop soup was the weirdest full of shredded cabbage, carrots, peas and even mini shrimp, thank goodness we don't have a shellfish allergy. We joked that they must take the leftovers dump them in a pot and make their egg drop soup with them. The staff all seemed bored out of their mind not a smile to be found in the place. Worse service I have ever got from this restaurant. Older lady asked for the tip and says most people tip 20%, we gave her 18% even though she rushed and got my food in 5 minutes from ordering. And there was 3 of us. She was extremely rude and says the boss doesn't pay their workers so they rely only on tips. Not only does she bash her boss but also expect a tip when she rushed us out in less than 20 minutes. Very rude and disrespectful. This is usually my go-to (Alpine location or prefer Old 28th) for Chinese but I may begin a search for another option. Ordered Sesame chicken, SS Pork, shrimp fried rice, crab Rangoon's/cheese and 4 egg rolls. Not terrible just lacking....? Sesame chicken was weird because the breading was falling off the chicken as I opened the carton and began pulling a few pieces out---didnt have much flavor the pieces that i did eat. Fried rice was ok but their fried rice has never wowed me, I just order it out of habit as kind of a side dish to soak up the sauce from one of the main dishes. I think thats pretty normal? Crab cheese was ok. I dunno why but its not blowing my skirt up any more so I'm going to have to hunt for something new. I wish Yen Ching was still around-- that place seemed to be pretty consistent. OMG, you guys, they're going to kick me out of Grand Rapids for being so mean to all the restaurants. I feel horrible about hating on my second one in a row...but seriously? Pretty sure this was the absolute worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. It takes a lot for me to only give one star, but honestly I don't think this place even deserves that. An unpleasant dining experience started with our waitress. You have to have better food to cop an attitude like this chick. She was impatient and rude, and acted like she was doing us a favor to take our order. My poor mother in law sometimes takes awhile to make up her mind, but Miss Ain't Got Time Fo' Dat wasn't having it. You made your selection and moved on. She would make an excellent protege for the Soup Nazi. And despite the "or"s and choices listed on the menu, you got what you got and what she wanted you to have. She rolled her eyes and probably would have clicked her tongue if we took another second of her precious time to order. Yeah. Back to her in a bit. Onto the food. Remember that line from "Uncle Buck" when Macaulay Culkin says, "he's cooking our garbage!" ? Well, I'm pretty sure that's what they do here. Why did the egg drop soup have disgusting half-cooked canned vegetables floating in it? And why did it taste and smell like bad fish? I couldn't get through more than two bites and normally I'm a clean-plate club member. The entree wasn't any better. More canned and frozen vegetables used as filler for everything. And my beef with pea pods had more of that awful "fishy flavor." Nothing was fresh. I'm pretty sure the chef went out of town for the holiday and left a note with reheating instructions on everything. The weird congealed gummy fried rice had a yucky reheated flavor to it. The meat was chewy and cheap tasting. And the pea pods and bamboo shoots were freezer burned and only partially cooked. Let's not even start on the eggroll or crab Rangoon. Ok, but only because you asked nicely. The Rangoon was as thin as a burnt piece of paper, and the eggroll had contents unidentifiable as food. Please do yourself a favor and eat at Panda Express instead. At least some of their food is cooked the day you order it. Okay, back to Waitress McCrabbypants. As we were about to leave, she started screaming at a busboy in another language. We surmised that she was upset because her tip was missing from the table he'd just cleaned (not that she deserved one) but when she walked over and lifted up a placemat she found it sitting there. I don't normally leave reviews, but this place was worth the time. We order takeout from here all the time and not once has our order ever been wrong! The food is always steaming hot, overfilled in the containers, and there's always a ton of leftovers...it even tastes great the 2nd time you eat it! I am very picky about food and First Wok gets it right! The sweet and sour chicken is always perfectly fried and good every time I have it. Love the food most of the time but the rudeness of the woman who answered the phone yesterday was ridiculous!! I was very nice and she just was mean for no reason. This place has been a family favorite for decades. Both Alpine and 44th St locations. When I lived in Kentwood this was my regular lunch spot. They knew me by name and order. Whether I drive or fly for my annual visit home, this is my first stop. My trip is not official until we get our First Wok. The beef with broccoli, shrimp egg fu young, shrimp fried rice and egg rolls with almond cookies for dessert are a must. The food is always fresh and yummy. Staff are all usually really nice. Could have been a better experience... I was visiting Grand Rapids from out of town, and decided to go to the First Wok on Alpine. While waiting for my friend, I've noticed the male employee behind the front counter was kind of unfriendly and indifferent towards customers coming in and leaving. I asked him if he had studied in U of Michigan since he was wearing a U of M sweatshirt. He then told me that he didn't and went on telling me his child was going for a doctoral degree in Saint Louis. I was thinking, "What does that have to do with anything?Someone is trying to show off", then, I was telling myself that I could understand from his point as a proud parent. I asked him if the degree was medical related. To my surprise, he responded by asking me, in a condescending way, if I knew what a doctoral degree was. I came from a life time of studying, even generally speaking, I thought it was kind of rude of him questioning other people of matter with obvious answer, especially doing so in the way of putting others down to push himself up. I called another location of the restaurant the next day. I spoke with a lady named Holly and asked for the manager. Instead of getting the manager, she kept talking on the phone in an arrogant and condescending way and asked me "Who are you?" Again, I was surprised by their rude and unprofessional responses. I explained that I would like to share my previous dining experience with the manager but she kept on talking. Due to her non-stop babbling, I hardly had my chance to tell her what happened. At one time during the conversation, she even questioned me if I was really at the Alpine location. Finally, she mentioned that she would let the owner know, and at that time, I was already so sick of listening to her. In my humble option, the food was okay and the waitress was nice, but unfortunately, they have rude and incompetent idiots taking phone calls and working in the front desk dealing with customers. Haven't been in years. Decided to try again. We're done. Interior of the restaurant is dreary, dated and depressing. No music but there was a big screen TV broadcasting the local news. Egg drop soup was full of unnecessary vegetables, hot sour soup had a strong garlic flavor and nothing else. Egg rolls were mostly cabbage. The "garlic beef with mushrooms" was full of green peppers, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, cabbage, carrots, green onions...oh, and 1/4cup (I'm being generous here) of mushrooms. The menu only stated "garlic beef with mushroom". There was no mention whatsoever about "with a variety of vegetables." The sauce was sweet with no garlic flavor at all. So disappointed. read more

I've visited this place twice while in Grand Rapids, and while it isn't a place I would choose on my own, I have no complaints. (Strip malls bug me.) Both times, servers have been upbeat and helpful and eager to please, and while the vegetarian selections are few, the two I've tried have been excellent. One reviewer complained about canned vegetables, but mine were fresh and crispy both times. Portions are large and generous and both times I've taken home leftovers that reheated well (not great, but well). You can't beat the prices -- can't think of a fast food place where you could get away this inexpensively for this much food. First Wok, Golden Wok, Magic Wok!! If you didn't know, all of these restaurants are owned by the same family. First Wok is located on 44th Street (Kentwood), Old 28th Street (Cascade), and on Alpine (Walker). These three are owned by the oldest sister of the family. This place is located in a strip of other businesses. The room is quite big though with plenty of tables for large groups. Service is quick, but you can't expect a lot from Chinese restaurants as they are usually the in-and-out type of place. When I use to go here, there was still smoking allowed in the rooms. The one thing I hated was the smell of smoke. I absolutely disguised it especially when I would try to eat and you have the smoke smell. The worst part was that this restaurant didn't separate the rooms at all. There was a SMALL partition that divided the room and I guess that was good enough. Heard that MI has the no smoking in businesses law now, so I have to go back to see if there is any changes to my visits there. The food is good for a typical Chinese menu. It comes out hot off the stove and you can't every go wrong with any dish you get. I especially love the eggrolls as it is filled with so much veggies. you also get the red sauce which is the better sauce rather than the orange sauce to dip the egg rolls in. The egg drop soup is one of my favs as it is filled with not just eggs but delicious veggies as well. You have mushrooms, cabbage, carrots, etc. Seeing that this restaurant is owned by the same family members, I believe it is safe to safe that the food is the same at all locations with different names. read more

This I the second time I have visited, I stay at the Holiday Inn near by. I ordered Shrimp and broccoli, egg roll, and soup. cost $18 (They forgot the rice!!!) I hate when you drive back to the hotel around 9 at night after driving all day and no rice. The last time I ordered the lo mein noodles and soup, they forgot to put the soup.
