We just discovered this gem of a Chinese restaurant after being disappointed with our regular place. It is take out only and the prices are surprisingly low. The egg rolls are the best we've ever had! The portions are large. My chicken and vegetables was a combo platter with fried rice and an egg roll. The vegetables were plentiful and fresh. The mei fun is something we've never heard of and the thin noodles were delicious and loaded with shrimp and beef. Lunch specials are 5.95 and come with fried rice, crab Rangoon and a beverage. I've been a patron for this business for many years and until my most recent visit yesterday, I hadn't been here in a while. Everything still holds up. This business is run almost entirely by one aged man and his wife and they still manage to deliver amazing food at a price that is simply unmatched in the western Grand Rapids area. They are old-school Chinese and therefore their English isn't perfect and they don't spend a lot of time speaking which I suspect leads to impatient/intitled people leaving skewed reviews. Don't believe it. This place is a diamond and its a miracle this family is still able to keep their business alive. 6/5 stars if I could, this is a Grand Rapids staple. Highly recommend their soups as well as the Szechuan chicken/pork/or beef. Also something important I want to say: the people complaining about crab rangoon are just wrong. They fry them in a simple triangle folded wonton for dipping instead of the obnoxious traditional shape which throws people off but for less than $5 for SEVEN and free homemade sweet and sour sauce, I do not understand how you can reasonably complain. The only reason this place isn't 4.5 stars or higher is because of Karens in my personal opinion and I've been coming here for over 13 years. read more

Pretty decent Chinese food that's quick and affordable. You just call and order, they don't take a name or payment, but food is almost always ready within 15 minutes. Also, when you place the order over the phone, have the staff verify; I ordered smaller portions however was charged for and received the larger portions. The food however was great!! It was piping hot when I picked it up and absolutely delicious with a fresh taste. The egg drop soup was thick how I like it and the egg rolls were massive! The quart of shrimp fried rice was more than enough for dinner and lunch the next day and they give you the items in microwave safe containers. So, I ordered my lunch from here today. First time ever ordering from Fu Garden. I ordered right after they opened (11:00 opening, I ordered at 11:15 or so), and I am very underwhelmed. I live only 2 minutes away from here. I picked up my food, and the best thing was my Hot and Sour Soup. It is absolutely delicious! Great flavor, huge pieces of tofu. After that though, I don't have many good things to say. I ordered the Szechuan Chicken Lunch Meal. The portion of Szechuan chicken was small, and luke-warm at best. I dare say it was simply left-overs of yesterday, reheated. But, I can't confirm this. Just how it comes across. It also lacked flavor, and some of the ingredients tasted burnt. Like, charred burnt. Not sure what it was, but it wasn't pleasant. Then there's the rice. Small portion of fried rice. I get it, the lunch special is only $4.65. But again, I felt like it was yesterday's leftovers reheated. And this I kind of have confirmation of, as some of the onions in the rice were cooked, and some of them were flat out raw. On top of that, again lacking in flavor, and luke-warm. Like, if you're going to reheat it, at least make sure it's hot. And if it's not reheated... Well, then keep it hot. Finally, there's the matter of the crab cheese. The edges were burnt, the middle oily, and not hot. Again, something seems off here. Like it was reheated again. So, I'm going to chalk this up to (hopefully) being because they had just opened. But, there's no reason for the lack of flavor, luke-warm food, and the barely-definable-as-a crab rangoon. Nothing was good at all, half the chicken was mushy and inedible, all of the crab cheese were very burnt and the egg rolls weren't fully cooked. $28 for the little food we got was a complete rip off. As a first timer: I can definitely say this is a quantity over quality restaurant. That being said, what we ordered was all edible, and when I find myself craving convenient Chinese takeout, I would definitely try FU again. I don't want 7 barely filled wontons. The lack of filling made them dry and flavorless. I would much rather have half the quantity and twice the quality. For 3.95 they were worth the gamble, but I won't be ordering these again, which is a bummer because let's face it, they are a takeout staple. Sesame Chicken. Dry. So dry. Desert dry. Could have used more broccoli. Sauce was good, as expected. Fried rice: Bland. Thanks for the extra sweet and sour sauce, without which, the rice would have gone in the trash. We used to order from here quite a bit and for a long time it was our go to for Chinese but little by little the Fu Garden I loved has disappeared. We ordered lunch carryout and I ordered the hot and spicy chicken. I had ordered it previously and expected lightly fried crunchy chicken in a slightly spicy sauce with bits of pepper. When I opened my ordered there was broccoli, stir-fried chicken and huge chunks of onion (which I can't eat) staring back at me. I called thinking there had been some kind of mistake and the gentleman who answered was rude. I asked him what was supposed to be in hot and spicy chicken and he said onion, broccoli and chicken. OK, so then I asked what he thinks I could have gotten the previous time when I had the order I actually enjoyed he curtly said that they don't fry any of the chicken but sweet and sour (which it wasn't). So either I got the wrong order then or now and in either case they didn't really care. The instance that really was the nail in the coffin for us though was last week about an hour after my husband ate his lunch he came down with a migraine. His migraines are usually food triggered and MSG is a huge culprit. We always double check before ordering to make sure its not used. I thought they didn't used to use it but since I needed to rule it out I called. it went like this "Hi my husband ordered the garlic beef and peppers can you tell me if you use MSG" "No we don't use" "Ok he's sick can you tell me.." -CLICK- THEY HUNG UP ON ME. Actually hung up on me. Now imagine if you have food allergies and needed to find out if a certain ingredient had been used and it was life or death and they hung up on you?! Due to the current health concerns I've been cooking at home exclusively but today on a vital errand decided to call our neighborhood Chinese takeout and put in an order. The owner said it would be 15 minutes but in 7 waved me into the store. As I was leaving he was at the sink quietly singing a song to time his ( very thorough) hand washing. I ate part of my pork lomein in the parking lot to enjoy it at it's best. I'd never ordered pork dishes here my the dozens of visits as at other Chinese restaurants it tends to be dry and overcooked. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the bok choy crisp, the pork was tender, abundant, well flavoured and juicy. I'll be back soon! read more

My sister discovered this place right after it opened and I'm so glad for it. Everything is super fresh and delicious. Pick up is always ready quickly. Rice is not dry nor soggy. My favorite dishes taste just like they should. Crab Rangoons are great. Best part? The portion sizes are huge for the price. I usually have leftovers of their $4.50 lunch specials to eat the next day. Slight negatives: - The decor is nothing to write home about, but I don't think it needs to be (and you can always eat at home). - The owner has a thick accent, so you might not want to order over the phone.
