Dad and i used to eat at Mikes first location (see the photos from my prior reviews) and last night I had my first meal alone (dad passed away Monday the 15th) so I chose Fish Shack! This is at the new location in the shopping plaza where publix is at and let me tell you the new restaurant is spotless beautiful bright and the food is still as excellent as it was at the first location of the shack! I gave owner Mike a mass card for my dads funeral and he came right out of the kitchen hugged and sat with me in my booth, he felt so bad because mike and my dad had forged a friendship over the years. I ordered grilled scallops that were perfect and delicious! My sides were rice and coleslaw. When I went to pay my tab Mike had picked up my bill. WAY nice of you Mike Thanks so much! Dad loved you and I love you! Thanks for making my first meal out alone so good! Of course I will be back I love mikes hog fish and raw oysters and everything on the menu! Our neighbors across the street introduced us to this sweet fantastic little spot, and when I say little I mean Maybe 6 tables and a bar where you can sit and eat. There is normally a waiting period, but if you are happy to wait out side with a drink in your hand and socialize for a while you won't be upset. At first you think you are lost when you are driving through the neighborhood to get there and all you really see when you get there is a small parking lot behind some stores. But if your curiosity has got you wondering what all the hype is about you carry on as planed and be adventurous. Ok so let me tell you about the food. Obviously a lot of good things to choose from but my initial hunger was craving fish and chips, which happens from time to time. Cod being the fish in this chips equation was served piping hot as so where the chips, fried to perfection with a light crispy outside. Everything you would expect from a traditional fish and chips with out the disappointment of a bad meal. My girlfriend had the Cajun hog fish which has never had, and absolutely loved it. So to get to the point I can see why everyone comes back here, it's just really great food in an old Florida restaurant with a friendly staff that make this place what it is. Finally, a review that makes me happy since the last few outings have been underwhelming to say the least. Fish shack is a throw back, mom and pops hole in the wall. But don't let the "hole in the wall" cliche detract from what a wonderful dining experience that is the Fish Shack! Hiding from plain site, the Fish Shack is right off busy federal highway. It sits in an old, small strip mall across from a Dairy Queen and in back of an old local dive bar. Again, unassuming is the running theme but the food is South Florida seafood magic. The main go-to on the menu is fish sandwich or platter meal served one of four ways (grilled, blackened, cajun or fried). Fresh catch of the day is located on a dry erase board and that's what will be served for the day. On this visit I ordered the local hogfish (semi flaky, white meat similar to snapper), blakened with a side salad and rice. OMG, seafood heaven! The hogfish melted in my mouth with just a hint of heat from the blackened seasoning. The rice was cooked perfectly to compliment the meal. It's the freshest of local fish that keeps me coming back and the consistency at which it's executed. I don't know the exact particulars but rumor has it that the restaurant sources it's fresh catch through a family member who pulls in fish for markets around town. Whatever the hookup, it truely is the freshest catch around. Just be prepared to wait for lunch or dinner. Seating is enough for exactly 20 people and the secret has been out for years that this place exists and that it's one of the best. Service is solid albeit a bit direct but that's ok. The food outweighs any negatives that I can nitpick about and to be honest, the service fits the atmosphere. It's perfect. Try the appetizers as well if your super hungry as the middle neck clams, raw, are just heaven if your a raw bar girl or guy. We visit weekly it is so good. My go to are the sea scallops, my husband gets the shrimp. The sea scallops are cooked to perfection every time. I LOVE this place and new location. They always have seafood specials of the day. Try them out, you won't be disappointed. Since we go so often, my only suggestion to the owners would be to change up the side options for the plates. This family run place is a breathe of fresh air. What is tucked into the back of a strip center shopping arcade is an superb seafood joint that reminds me of Maine, or Key West or Cape Cod. White Wainscoting and Caribbean Blue walls adorned with resin sharks, wahoo and marlins is just perfect. We started with 2 dozen EXCELLENT oysters, fresher than many places in Ft Lauderdale and half the price. Fish is prepared fried, blackened or cajun as you wish. I have had the grouper and hogfish both were fresh and perfectly done. Great Cole slaw, decent French fries, great onion rings, what more could you ask for. Btw most dishes are $15.95 to $20.00 which for fresh seafood is amazing these days. I can not wait to go back and have the scallops, and a half dozen other things. read more

Cute place with a fishing focused decor. Nice fish mounts, a counter and booths. You can smell and taste the fish fry in the air when you walk in and take a deep breath. At 6PM on a Tuesday, it was a 20 minute wait to get in. Started with the half and half soup. Half lobster bisque and half New England chowder. It was tasty, but thinner than I prefer. The Oyster crackers were served with the soup as they should be. Next up was the smoked fish dip and it was delicious, but was served with saltine crackers which are ok, but would be better with Ritz crackers, so maybe order it to go. I ordered Cracked Conch for my entree and it was delicious. My woman had the grouper which was prepared perfectly. read more

Chef Mike always in attendance in the kitchen, my wife and I made it for an early dinner. My wife had a fried lobster sans bread and I enjoyed the Fried Conch platter with plenty of morsels of tender sweet conch piled high. Too much to finish so some of the conch and fries cane home with us! Worth the wait if you don't time your arrival in between rushes. read more

We stopped by here due to the rating. It's all true, excellent fish and chips and calamari. Lobster bisque was very good also. Cucumber salad was good but overpriced for the portion size. This place is better than the average score I gave, but the attitude of the waitress we had , reflects the 3 stars in giving. First off, we brought our catch to them to cook, they offer it for $10 w/2sides. No problem there, fish was cooked as requested, sides were good size portion, but not sure about the soda, it's nothing name brand, but tasted fine. Maybe some local supplier. We got the lobster bisque, as we expected it would be delicious , nope. There was not lobster meat( chunks ) in the soup. Any meat seemed to be so fine, it was not appealing, and therefore not very tasty as we expected it to be. We heard the waitress tell another customer, that they were totally out of lobster, ah ! Maybe that's the reason for the lack of meat in the soup The minimal conversation that I had with the waitress, she was very rude, forgetful, distracted, etc and when asked about it the second time, a shitty attitude/response was given. All the food that passed us, looked great, portions were large, and people were eating it up ! I will return, but I will be sure to request a different waitress. So to the lady who seemed to have a bad attitude, please let my 38 cent tip reflect the service we received. read more

This place gets really busy so we like to get there for an early dinner on weekdays before 5pm. Warm, welcoming, and friendly service from the staff. They are helpful in recommending dishes. Their prices are reasonable for quality of their fresh catches of the day (sandwich or platter) and their menu items. The platters come with a choice of 2 sides like Cole Slaw, fries, side salad. Portion sizes are generous. Absolute favorites so far: 1) Cracked Conch 2) Fresh catch of the day: Mahi Mahi platter or Grouper platter 3) Fish & Chips platter We also tried the Conch fritters which were delicious but we like the cracked conch much better.
