In my ongoing quest to sample hamburgers all around the world, I am distinctly bent on avoiding the larger chain burger restaurants (and corporate fast food in general) unless absolutely necessary. If you know me personally, you know that there are a few exceptions to this rule, and one of the exceptions is Five Guys. I do like their burgers and fries, and enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurants. Since there are several locations in Boise, you can get a burger anytime you like, so it can be a bit routine. For me, on this day I needed a quick lunch, and found myself nearby (as the crow flies) to the Eagle location. I decided to pick up a Five Guys burger, which caused me to violate one of my other life rules: "Avoid traveling on Eagle Road at all costs". Because I was out of position, I had to do two u-turns, wait for what seemed like hours at different signals, before arriving at Five Guys. I realize that this isn't a review of the Ada county roadways, and it really isn't Five Guys fault for the potential traffic and congestion, but it is something to be aware of if you want to grab a quick lunch. Alright...so this is one of my favorite chains and one of the best examples of an overall reliable and consistent and relatively high quality chain. After a beating my stomach took due to another chain, I wasn't looking for anything too challenging, just comfort. As to the execution, they did the burgers to near perfection, well-cooked and moist and juicy. The bacon was a bit destroyed and speaking directly to the restaurant now and anyone else who might have one that serves burgers, don't give me cold cheese, cold unmelted cheese, a big chunk of it from the slices that didn't melt, like this place did. That aside, Coke Zero mix was good and I always like the peanuts. Awesome to have those rather than fries. I would have put this place at more like a 3.5 than a 4 as there were some noticeable cleanliness issues...and that unmelted cheese thing...however, they get the push because I got a kick out of the kitchen staff singing along to the overhead, even though hair metal songs from the 80's are considered "classics" now and that sort of made me feel old...anyway, burger was fine. Definitely worth hitting up. If you want them to make you a burger my way, choose either single or double patty, add cheese, bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos, A-1 sauce and get thee face full. Sometimes I will also add green peppers and less frequently a little splash of lettuce, but that's more of an option; the other toppings are standard. read more

One night, we decided to go the overload routine and have a burger and fries. Hadn't done that out in a long time. So we decided, 5 Guys would be our return to a diet of meat, fat, grease and salt; the basic 4 food groups. The place is pretty much a burgers and hot dogs place. The location was open and bright, pretty clean for the dinner hour. The guy on the register was great at explaining to us how things worked. Pretty much order what condiments you want. Could even have a bunless burger with a "lettuce bun". Fries can be had in several sizes in regular salt or Cajun Spices. There is no vegetarian burger choice, but there is a BLT available. Burgers come in large and small. the large burgers have two beef patties and the small has one patty. Cheese and bacon are available for an additional price. Cooking was to order and pretty quickly done. While you wait, you can eat as many peanuts in the shell as you like. The food is delivered in a plain brown sack with the fries grease sort of soaking thru the bag. The burgers come wrapped in aluminum foil and a wax paper. That sort of steams the bun. some like it that way, some do not. Personally it makes the burger seam greasier than normal, since the bun gets sort of squishy. While I found the burger and fries OK, my wife didn't like the burger much (too greasy), she say. We found the fries were tasty, but salty. Probably wouldn't do the Cajun spices again. The combined calories and fat in that meal adds up to more than the daily load for any kind of healthy diet. Wouldn't pay to eat that meal very often. Summary? We would probably not go back again, as there are other burger places we like more. Different tastes for different folks. The standard for my comparisons is the burger at Goodwood BBQ. read more

Both good in their own ways but don't come here expecting for it to taste like in and out. It won't. That being said, the burgers are good, not the best but I am a fan. I used to love them, now I will never go back. The bun was burnt, REALLY burnt and smashed to 1/4 inch. $3.29 for a small fry -- used to be a load of fries. Now it's a little cup with greasy and most often burnt fries. When I showed the worker the condition of my burger he just said, "Wow you have really big hair"????? I ordered their cheeseburger and it was raw!!! Not cooked all the way. I watched them cook the meat, they had to cut it to see if it's cooked over and over. This is a complaint about their ordering to pick up system. The reason you order before you get there is so that it saves you time and it's ready when you get there. Not at five guys you're at the end of the line by the time you get there waiting for fries, even when the have fries available. They put you at the back of the line. (Burger is made and getting soggy) while you wait. You would be better off to order when you get there. read more

I love Five Guys - it's my family's favorite place to get a good burger in Idaho! We get the burgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun and they will customize it however you want - grilled onions, raw onions, mushrooms, condiments, etc. Their fries are delicious and a decent sized portion and their customer service is always top-notch. The beef of the burgers is so fresh that it literally falls apart as you're eating it. Highly recommend Five Guys!! I hadn't any real desire to run right out to Five Guys when they came to town, I didn't know anything about them, I also had no desire to make my way down to Bodo, or deal with traffic on Milwaukee to eat there. However, as my husband and I were on a shopping mission near The Village in Meridian last weekend we decided to take in the experience that is Five Guys. We were probably their first visitors of the day. The location was open and bright, very very clean. The gal on the register was great at explaining to us how things worked. My husband ordered a 'big' double cheeseburger and medium fry along with a beverage. I went with the same burger (only bunless) with a small fry and beverage. We opted to split a hotdog. Handing over almost $30 for food we could have certainly eaten at any run of the mill fast food place was a bit of a shock, but when you're trying something new you gotta be willing to go for it! We filled our drinks and chose a table. It had started to pour down rain outside and I quickly noticed how chilly it was inside that big open space with so many huge windows. Luckily our food was ready soon so I had other things to think about. First off, packaging. Um.. hello.. kill trees much? Each of our orders in a GINORMOUS brown paper grocery bag. I'm sure Five Guys is trying to cut down on overhead by not having to pay someone to collect and wash plastic trays, but seriously? If you're going to eat in you should at least have the option to save a tree. That aside, we forged ahead. I really SHOULD pay attention when I read the words of other Yelpers because oh my heavenly Hanna the amount of french fries was huge! Fresh cut, fresh cooked, hot and right out of the fryer. Crispy on the outside, mealy inside with just the right amount of salt. I may have to try the Cajun spice next time. Burgers were meaty, well cooked, graciously topped (TWO tomato slices.. full on THICK slices.. not tomato slivers!). The only thing we would have like is if the cheese had been in a more advanced stage of melt on our burgers. I adored my bunless burger- placed neatly with my requested condiments in a foil tray. The hotdog (I chose a regular dog, on a bun with mustard, relish and grilled onion) was another wonderful bit of noshing. We did notice, as more patrons came in, the physical plant had a few more issues. Orders are called out by number with no speaker system. If we had not been seated near the counter, say around the corner of the place near the restrooms, I don't think we would have heart them call our number. We had PLENTY to eat, but I did manage to liberate a few of the peanuts placed out for folks.. tasty indeed. Overall this was a good experience, I'm glad we did it for a bit of a special occasion (we were shopping with tax return monies), but given the cost I can't see going back anytime soon. read more
