I've been curious about Big Jud's for a while, but since I live over 30 minutes away from their location, it was hard to justify the drive. We were close to the area and we finally were able to visit and I'm sure glad we did. The restaurant is located in a nice shopping center on the corner of Eagle and Overland, immediately on the other side of 84. The location is nestled towards the back of the center and can easily be missed as it's tucked in the corner of a small lot. We were greeted with a huge smile and swift seating to a booth in the larger dining room area. Even though it was barely 11:30 am on a Saturday, the dining room was already filling with hungry customers and the kitchen was notably bustling. We had Kaitlyn as our server. She arrived with a sunny disposition and eagerness to get our orders going. Downside, due to cost, tomatoes are not available. I have to say, that kind of broke my heart a little...tomatoes, in my eyes, are a requirement for every burger. I ordered the Bleu Bacon single burger and hubby had the cheeseburger. We ordered a small fry (1/2 pound) for us to share. Food did take quite a while to come out, but our server did come by several times to check on us, refill drinks, and give us updates (apparently a large to-go order backlogged the kitchen). The burgers came out first. I was a little underwhelmed with the small burger plate and cheese that was obviously cold when added to the burger and had become a tad sweaty from being steamed instead of melted. I had little hope....but then I took my first bite. The Kaiser hamburger bun was soft, burger patty was nicely seasoned and the bleu cheese was punchy without being overwhelming. The bacon sung through. The fries quickly followed. We were surprised by the home cut style, thick and irregular...rustic and perfectly cooked. These suckers are huge. But with every fry, it was crunch-tender on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I really enjoyed our visit, but the place seemed to be a little understaffed. Several tables had plates stacked or cleaning supplies atop the tables. That aside, service was attentive and the food tasted great, even without the tomatoes. read more

I came in at lunchtime on a Friday and they were not packed. The parking lot is small and was full so I was worried it would be busy. The host sat me and took my order while another waitress helped me through the rest of my vist. I ordered a Hawaiian burger, small fries and a Pepsi. It's hard to find Hawaiian burgers around so I was looking forward to it. The balance was good although it was light on the pineapple. A second ring might have helped. The fries though! A small is big enough for two people to share and while the 1 and 2 lb burgers are what they're known for, the fries are big too! Probably 1/2" home style cut fries. Sometimes home style cut fries are under cooked. Not these. They were nice and fluffy inside. And BIG! read more

Sparsely decorated burger place with the world famous one pound burger. Some booths, high top and regular tables with stainless steel tops. There are a couple TVs as well. The place was clean and the toilets were good. The squeeze and I split the grilled Hot Buffalo Chicken samminch, and an order of large onion rings. It was plenty of food for two peeps. The chicken sandwich had plenty of toppings and had good flavor. I really didn't get the buffalo spice at all. The kitchen didn't cut it in half, but we did have a steak knife to saw it in half. The onion rings were pretty good, but make sure you bite all the way through, as we had three rings that pulled out of the breading. From what I learned from someone at Sonic, the onion skin causes this problem. We had ketchup and fry sauce on the table. Big Jud's is one of our favorite local burger places. We love sharing a 1lb Big Jud special between two (or more!) people. The buns are made in house and we love the texture. The flavor of the burger is always great, too. Another regular order for us is the double bacon cheeseburger, and the hickory chicken burger. The fries are as thick as a finger and include skins, which I always love. Fry sauce and ketchup are provided at the table. Fries were piping hot when they were brought out to us, and fresh soda cups were provided before we even got all the way to the bottom of our first cup. They're happy to send you with a to-go cup when you leave, as well! We got our orders in a very reasonable time for freshly made, which has been our experience every time we come. read more

This review is just for the atmosphere and cleanliness, as we didn't stay long enough to order. We were greeted by a less than enthusiastic server who showed us to a booth in the room beyond the hostess stand. First Observation: This place is filthy, crusty, and gross! There were 2 parties there, 1 party of 4 and 1 party of about 10, (so not busy considering there were 2 servers working) and every other table was filthy. There was food all over the floor and on the tables along with dirty dishes. A bottle of cleaner was left on top of an in cleaned table, which seemed crazy to me. Why would you go to all the trouble of bringing a chemicals out to clean a table and just leave it there? In addition to the less than clean dining area, the restrooms were dirty too. And one final note...maybe servers should consider NOT wearing their PJ's to work. It's just off-putting. read more

Pay attention or you'll miss it. Entrance is toward the back of the parking lot not on the main street. I placed a to-go order, but it looks like a sporty, casual place. There is a waiting area near the entrance. Thoroughly enjoyed the avocado bacon burger and fried pickle spears. The burger tasted like a "healthy cheeseburger". The meat was not greasy, and the bacon was perfectly crisped. The hamburger bun was soft and spongy. I love the herbed seasoning they added to the batter for the pickles. Order the onion rings, they're well battered and light. Only reason I'm not giving a 5 star is because their claw machine is clearly rigged! It grabbed the toy that was right at the edge and intentionally let it go even though I moved the joystick! Other than that, definitely coming back for the food. read more

I ordered the chicken nuggets for my granddaughter. When I cut into them so they could cool a little, they were raw inside! Although they took them back and cooked them further, I will not be ordering them again. The server did discounted the chicken portion of our bill by half. Last week, my wife was craving fried pickles. Interesting food choice, right? Maybe she was recalling one of her pregnancy moments... Haha. So I searched Yelp for places with fried pickles. Amazingly, I discovered that Big Jud's serves them! We had eaten at the Big Jud's south of Rexburg while visiting there some time ago; however, I hadn't noticed the fried pickles because of the incredible burgers that they prepare. Well, the fried pickles were good. Meanwhile, we shared the 1 pound Burger which was delicious! Between the two of us, we ate only half of the huge burger and 60% of the fries (fresh cut, BTW). "Maybe I should send it back." "Should I send it back?" "I wish I sent it back." So went the dialogue in my head after this atrocity of a burger hit my table. On the positive side, I can say without hesitation that, when asked, I can tell people, "The worst burger I have ever had in my life was at Big Jud's in Boise, ID." Why so harsh? Simply because they claim to have the best burger in Idaho. However, the only way I see that to be accurate is if the burger in second place was, in fact, a perfectly formed patty that came out of a horse's ass. Staring at the interesting menu, I decided to just go all out and get their one pound "Big Jud Special" which came with a large fry and drink for $22.99, figuring it would cost close to that much anyway if I ordered a different burger, since the fries and drink were not included. Fries came out first, and like an aging prizefighter locked in a hotel room in Las Vegas, they were limp and had no punch. Ugh. Finally, the burger came out and looked like what Ronald McDonald must have seen in his head prior to his suicide. I really don't know how to explain it, except to say it was unique. Since it looked like the "Man vs. Food" challenge burger, other patrons were pointing and asking me questions. I then dug in. Without a doubt, this was a reheated patty, evidenced by a thick burnt crust along the outside, 245 degree temperature inside, and dryer than a naked grandmother hiking in Joshua State National Park in the middle of July. Horrible. Terrible. Disgusting. I barely made it through a third of it and had the server put it out of its misery, as well as the fries which were an insult to the state of Idaho. So, you're wondering - why didn't I send it back? The server was A+ and a credit to the restaurant, but between that, how busy the place was and the people around me staring wondering if it was a food challenge, I just couldn't muster up the courage to say, "This is terrible. Please either get me a new one or take the knife you stuck in the middle of it and plunge it into my heart." I decided to chalk it up as a major food disaster and to get the hell out of there after paying the bill while leaving a generous tip to the best thing about the visit. On a more frustrating note, I found out after the fact that an In N Out Burger opened up within the last few weeks in Meridian, and could have kicked myself for wasting a trip here. Finally, I heard there was an eight hour wait at the In N Out when they opened; if Big Jud is considered the best burger in Idaho, you now know why. read more

Sometimes I drop in to have a large basket of fries. Large, skin on in house cut fries. Fried just right and NOT SALTED. You can add your own for that perfect balance. Fry sauce and ketchup is served for your dipping pleasure. Today's visit included fish. Went for the fries but the fish is OK. Not fresh dipped. Stick to the burgers or chicken sandwiches, always a better choice here. Large drinks and service excellent as always. read more

This place is like a prison cell, cold, hard and dark- no atmosphere at all. Couple of burgers on a Saturday night- over cooked, dry and tasteless with mustard and pickles which is what I like. 2 1/2 pickles and mustard I couldn't find. Got fries and rings. Rings were so burned and smelly we couldn't eat them. Fries were cold and stuck together- meaning they weren't cooked right. Side of mayonnaise which I like for dipping was something I've never tasted in my life and hope never to again. Service was boring- more fun with friends time. Went to Big Jud's yesterday. It was a little disappointing. My wife had the Hawaiian burger with a tiny piece of pineapple. It took her two bites into the burger before she got to any pineapple. Both our burgers were very dry, and overcooked to the point all the flavor was gone. I ordered a milkshake and was very surprised at how small it was. I think it was in a 10oz cup, perhaps an 8 oz. It was good, but very small. The fries were good, but also a bit overcooked. On the plus side, their fry sauce was pretty good. read more

Staff is under trained and can't take a complete order. Not only did they Give me the Wrong Burger but they also didn't bring me the fries I ordered. by the time the fires came my burger that was wrong and now was cold and I was still starving. I took 2 bites of the burger while waiting. I asked to pay for my drink since that was only the only thing that was brought to me right and wasnt terrible. the owner said I had to pay for burger that was 100% wrong, and cold. A MUST STOP! We wanted "Idaho potatoes" traveling through Idaho from WA to CO. Their fries were so fresh and delish! Anywhere that has a container of fry sauce left on the table to use at your leisure gets an "A" in my book. I got the chicken strips, my husband got the double bacon burger. Both were fantastic! Side note, the portions are huge.... Could easily split a large fry. The waitress was kind, and made sure we enjoyed our food and had what we needed. Restaurant was clean, so were the restrooms. Came here with my new boss on my first day of a new job. Ordered the crispy chicken avocado sandwich (with bacon!)... bacon and chicken were both very crispy, which I love. Didn't notice the avocado too much, but the sandwich was delicious. Our server was a very sweet young woman, and super friendly as well. She made sure we had what we needed and checked up on us a couple times. Very professional without feeling forced. The decor wasn't much to write home about. Just a restaurant. Kinda dark inside, metal tables. Not much else to say. I was surprised at the size of the glass of water I asked for when it came... it looked like it was 32 ounces! Same with my boss's soda... is this an Idaho thing? I saw the same at a different place on a different day. Anyway, this place was pretty good. Never been to a Big Jud's before. We were pleasantly delighted to be a "sit down" dining experience instead of fast food vibe. Prices were fair and the burgers were hand pressed. Burgers we're fantastic and the onion rings were perfect (crispy as I've ever had). One negative is I was charged for a side of BBQ sauce for my burger and onion rings but I won't dock any points for that as the food is really good. Server was friendly and checked on us a few times. Overhyped nothing special to write home about and a little on the pricey side for what I got

LOVE me some big Juds! So this place holds a special place in my heart. Going to college in south east Idaho the original run down Big Juds in Archer, which is still there (a structural and food safety miracle), was always packed. Filled with college guys trying their best to get their picture on that wall of fame after completing the big jud. The unsuccessful being rolled out of the place beaten, hurting, and hunched over in pain from that barstool sized burger still fighting back. The best fries on the flipping planet and filling the cracks with ice cream afterwards. I am happy to report that the Meridian location is a very good representation of the original. The burgers here are actually put together with more detail and taste identically delicious. Let me say this now.....Big Juds has a fantastic burger. They are truly great. Not the greasy American cheese oozing burger you fell in love with, but something just as nostalgic and comforting. They are big...the singles are managable, the doubles are perfectly big (for me), and the Big Jud will feed a family if needed. But it doesn't stop there, oh no. They have chicken sandwiches that rival that of the burgers! I have recently discovered an insanely....rediculously....mind blowingly great chicken sandwich here, that when altered in just such a way becomes a miracle between buns (that's what she said). The mushroom swiss chicken... order it in a double... and get one fillet grilled and one fried. Life changing, you are welcome...I now own you for the remainder of your days.... yes it's that good see my photo. So I mentioned the fries being the best on planet earth, and they are at both the original location and the Ashton location just before heading up to Yellowstone, however it is sad to report they cut them differently here in boise and they are really good but not as good as the original locations. The onion rings are spot on however and remain some of my favorites anywhere. And did I mention you can get scotch and soda here? Cause you can... and I do. If the length of this review doesn't give away the memories I have at this place I dont know what does. The Meridian location is very good. A solid 4 stars plus....but missing those fries, the original location gets 5 all the way. One of the best burger joints in the state of idaho....and for this guy it is THE burger joint in Idaho. Came in for a bite to eat before a movie at the majestic and was seated right away. Once seated it took almost 10 minutes to have our server come over and say hello, by that time we knew what we were going to order. You could tell by only 2 servers/ hostess that they were under staffed. Ordered the finger steaks with tots and boy were there a lot of tots! Food came out pretty quickly and looked alright. As I said there were tons of tots fried up perfectly and the finger steaks were varied in size from tiny nugget to a real finger steak size. Some were way over done and a couple were cooked alright. Flavor was good ( I also dip in BBQ sauce sometimes too) but over all the experience was ok, it's obvious that the lack of staffing-everywhere- has affected service and perhaps quality too. read more

I am a long time customer. The hand formed patties, (who does that anymore), the thick cut, not frozen, french fries, all make for a fantastic meal. and you better come hungry. I'm from southeastern Idaho so I remember stopping at the original Big Juds in St. Anthony and loving it. When we moved here to Boise in 2003 and we were so excited to see another location here! Now they've opened up a Meridian branch and we are thrilled they are doing so well. The portions here will make you feel like a hobbit. Even their drink cups are ginormous! A large fry or tot will easily feed two or more people. You can't go wrong with just about anything you order here. But my favorite and I think the best are their finger steaks and steak fries. The steak are tender and have a nice crispy coating. And the fries...oh my love affair with French fries. This place has amazing homemade steak fries. And gobbs and gobbs of fry sauce. Saturday night and not too busy. I had the Hawaiian burger (add avocado.) It took a while to get to us, which was a little strange because it wasn't super busy. Polite, the fries were fresh and giant. The burger tasted great. The extra $2 for gluten free buns was a little excessive given the final bill, but all in all, the food was really quite good. Giant unremarkable overcooked burger on an even "giant-er" roll that overpowered the burger and condiments. Incorrect side order steamed in the styrofoam (boo) to flabby fries and overcooked tots instead of the onion rings we ordered.
