I definitely agree that the burgers are great quality and fries are delicious, but I'm just not into the lines at this place. I waited in line for almost 20 minutes on a Friday lunch hour. Props for the malt vinegar to go with fries, and the large array of toppings. A small burger was more than enough to fill me up. Disappointed that they don't serve turkey burgers, though. Burgers are OK, skip the fries. Yeah, I said it. I don't know why this place has such a vaunted reputation. Their walls are covered with newspaper and magazine reviews proclaiming their burgers and fries to be unmatched. I've eaten at Five Guys twice in DC and twice at this location in NYC, and each time, I've thought the burger was passable and the fries were awful. The burger usually becomes a big mess, as the bun is of the type of white bread that disintegrates at the first sign of moisture, and the regular toppings (tomatoes, cooked onions, sauces) produce plenty of that. You almost need a spoon to eat the second half of the burger. As for the fries, the basic fries are not successful. They are thick but limp and mushy, with an unsatisfying taste. In the ill-conceived cajun version, they apparently have had about a quart of McCormick powdered cajun seasoning dumped on top. I love spicy and strongly flavored food, but i'm not a fan of eating the contents of the spice rack directly. Really terrible. Also worth noting that at least in NYC, the prices are steep. A cheeseburger and fries (no drink) will run you $11. You can get better food for that, or something decent for a good bit less. read more

I love Five Guys on 3rd avenue. Given the neighborhood, this is just about the best burger you can get. Yes, they are death on a stick, but it's a tasty, tasty stick. The lines are long, but they move fast. The people behind the counter are friendly and courteous. The fries are good, but they give you way too many, so you can order 2 burgers and 1 fries and have more than enough food for you and a friend. It's a little pricey, but totally worth your money. Why spend $2 less for a mediocre burger? If I get a burger for lunch, I want a *good* burger. I'll pay it. Regarding delivery - the thing is, you can't order at 12:15 and expect your food to be there in any sort of reasonable time. Let's get down to it. Five guys used to be incredible. There used to be some value behind it, in getting a bigger more quality product. However it may just be this location, but I feel like the burgers have gotten smaller . Less toppings are being placed on them and the amount of fries that you get aren't as much as they used to be. Also the cost of the items has gone up and it's hard to justify paying what you pay. Almost 20$ for a double w/ fries and a drink. I almost rather pay half as much to get a basic simple cheeseburger and fries at the place across the street as opposed to going out and finding a five guys to go to anymore. First of all, FIVE GUYS is the DEFINITIVE BURGER. That's it. If you haven't had it yet, you should. If you have had it, you should have it again. God, their burgers and fries are incredible. Cooked perfectly, with that perfect amount of grease coming out of your beautifully prepared burger and fries (which should definitely be accompanied by a fountain drink). A good trick is to get the burger and small fries because they always give you more fries than the size you ordered (inside that pretty brown baggy they give your sandwich in!). I would give 5 stars just for the 5-guys, but this branch had some issues with the fountain drink machine when I went (and no one told me the machine was 'being fixed' when I made my purchase and didn't offer a refund until they were 'sure' the machine couldn't be fixed). This is a disappointing misrepresentation of the Five Guys chain that originated in Arlington, Virginia. The freshness of the beef and potatoes is supposed to be uncompromising, the atmosphere - with peanut shells littering the floor - something between a clean diner and a hole in the wall. Sadly, the burgers here in Manhattan are overcooked and the fries are undercooked. That makes for a dry experience. I hope things improve. I got the cheeseburger consisting of two patties for only $7 and small fries for $2[which they gave a lot] The burger - it was ok. Pretty dry and not juicy at all but it was better than Shake Shack or McDonalds. I got mayo, onion, lettuce and BBQ sauce. If it weren't for the BBQ sauce I wouldn't have liked it. BBQ sauce was ok. Nothing too fancy Fries - they were not crispy at all. The kind of fries that just melts in your mouth. If you're into that then that's good. Overall, a tiny speck above average. You get to choose your toppings at no additional charge. Mayo, Mustard, Ketchup, Onions, Pickles, Relish, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Lettuce... are a few of the ingredients to choose from. If you like customization, then this is the place for you. (2) Large portions. A lot of meat and a lot of bun. (3) If you order fries, the only nuance about this place that is unique is the malt vinegar for the fries. Tasty. But I'm more a ketchup person, so wasn't too impressed. Cons: Customization. I am not a chef. I like when an acclaimed master chef determines what the best toppings/condiments are for a burger. I concocted my own masterpiece but let's just say it wouldn't win the burger of the year award. The burger was OK. Nothing special. Not sure why Obama and staff like Five Guys so much. 9/3/10 Haven't tried EVERY burger in the city...yet...but this one was really good. Out of all the burgers I have tried, this one would be a close 2nd. The one thing I like about this place was that all the burgers were well done. The one thing I didn't like about this place was the waiting. I had the Cheeseburger (I actually thought it was a regular cheeseburger, but it was a Double Cheeseburger) and it was excellent. It wasn't pink juicy, but it was still juicy (come on it's well done!) and VERY tasty. I think I ate it in about 7 minutes. I was told to try the cajun french fries - they were powdery and good (spicy), but they were too much after the double cheeseburger =) All in all, I would definitely go here again. You get a great burger and sample as many toppings as you want. I wasn't offered peanuts, but it wasn't a big deal. Dont' eat this "on the run" - I did, but it was messy - and definitely try it! Today was my first encounter with Five Guys. After a co-worker came in with the smell of the fries wafting through my office (thanks Shawn), I just couldn't contain my curiosity. Needless to say, overall, I was very impressed. The friendly staff seems like they love their jobs with their big smiles and high energy, but not faked like some corporate stores require. When I got the burger and fries back to my office, I was in Heaven! not to be confused with 'burger heaven", which i felt robbed after eating there a few months back. The burger was stacked high with ingredients and stacked even higher with taste. The fries were plentiful and cooked just right to become a new craving food for late nights and "hangover" Mondays. It does get very crowded during lunch time so, the tables tend to be dirtier then with the peanut shells everywhere! Working nearby, Five Guys is hard to miss. I had heard of the chain, and was waiting for one to come into the area. This is definitely a place to stop by at least once. I can guiltily say that I've been here twice recently. The burgers are good, but not spectacular (Shake Shack has them beat). All the sides for your burger are free, they offer a wide variety, and gladly heap them on for you. I recommend the small burger, which is one beef patty. The fries are fantastic, they rotate where the freshly cut potatoes come from. A regular order should sate even the hungriest customer. They've also got free peanuts, but don't expect to spend less than $10 here. read more

Five Guys, Definitely NOT Five Stars If you live anywhere in America, you know that Five Guys chains have been sweeping the nation, particularly the East Coast. There's been a lot of hype about Five Guys, especially since Zagat voted their burger the "Best" Fast Food burger in America in 2010. Now, I am not really a fan of fast food. The only time I'll make an exception is on a road trip (and even then, I usually get chicken). But with all the buzz and a new location right around the corner from my office, I had to give Five Guys a chance. If anything, for the sake of research. Well, sorry Zagat, but my official vote is in, and I think Five Guys stinks. Granted I haven't had a fast food burger in about 11 years, and I can't for the life of me remember what a McDonald's burger tastes like, but I can say with certainty that I'll never go back to Five Guys. If this were a comparative review, as Zagat's was, maybe Five Guys would rank the best compared with Mickey Dee's, Wendy's, Burger King, and the like. But it's not that kind of review. And I'm not willing to do that much for the sake of research. Therefore in the case of Five Guys v. nothing else, nothing else wins. I have to say that I did really enjoy the atmosphere inside the Five Guys on Third Avenue between 43rd and 44th. The staff was really jovial and friendly. They looked like they were having an awesome time preparing mediocre burgers. I was there during the lunch rush but the line moved pretty quickly and everyone on line seemed really excited about being there. At the time, I felt really excited too. I felt like I was part of something new and big and different. Well, that didn't last very long. The first thing I didn't like about Five Guys is that the place smelled like a typical, greasy, fast food joint. The kind of place where after you walk out, you want to take a shower. I assume you really can't help that when you're searing cheap beef and frying pounds upon pounds of potatoes in peanut oil, but I guess I was hoping for something better. I ordered the Little Cheeseburger, which is really just a regular-sized fast food cheeseburger. (The regular burgers at Five Guys have 2 patties.) They offer a choice of 15 free toppings, but I tried to keep it simple and went with ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. I didn't get their famous fries that notoriously soak the brown paper bag with grease, which in hindsight, may have been Five Guys' saving grace. But I was really there for the burgers. Let's talk about the burgers, shall we? First of all, they are a complete mess. You open the foil wrapper and there's lettuce falling all over the place, thick slices of tomatoes sliding out of the mangled bun, and globs of ketchup everywhere. I couldn't even hold the damn thing. Five Guys' burgers are a contradiction to the idea of Fast Food; which you should be able to eat on the go, in a hurry. Secondly, the meat patty (if you could even call it that) was also a complete mess. It looked very unappetizing and had no patty-esque shape whatsoever. It looked like they balled up a wad of overcooked ground beef, slapped it on a bun, covered it with toppings, and called it a day. They do use fresh, not frozen, meat. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's good, fresh meat. Thirdly, just because you throw a slice of cold American cheese on your hamburgers and hope the heat will melt it, doesn't give you the right to call them cheeseburgers. Lastly, the meat had no real flavor. It tasted like a typical fast food burger that you could get anywhere off I-95 (or your Interstate of choice). Not to mention, it was difficult to even taste the beef without choking on ketchup or a gargantuan pickle slice. To top it all off (no pun intended) I had indigestion for the next 6 hours. Thanks Five Guys! Now I understand why Five Guys offers 15 free toppings. They have to mask the generic, fast food burger taste with something. read more

This location is quick and clean and delivers the experience well. I give it 5 stars for the awesome taste though it is in the fast food category. Me and my pregnant wife went to this place last week. The burgers itself tasted just fine but afterwards both of us had to use the bathroom immediately. Really, what's all the hype about? I finally had a chance to order here last month. I got take out one day for lunch during the work week. It was pretty full inside with customers but the flow of the line moved quickly. The service was good and the cashier ringing me up was happy and friendly. What's up with no combos? I feel cheated if there's no combo meal with a slight discount. Everything here is a la carte. I ordered the "little cheeseburger" (single patty), regular sized fountain drink, and regular sized "cajun" fries. The burger was dry and over-cooked, the fries were burnt and tasted like they were completely saturated with Lawry's seasoning mix! There are better, cheaper burgers nearby. So I walk in here the other day on the advise of my coworkers. They kept telling me how good the burgers were and how I just had to try it. Well, I stepped up to the counter and ordered the unhealthiest burger I can get. I got the Bacon cheesebuger with everything. What the hell, the toppings were free. I got a drink and 11 dollars later I was walking to the local park with a heavy bag in hand. The burger was a freakin' thing of beauty. The double patty with dripping cheese, bacon,lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mushrooms, mayo, mustard and more brought a tear to my eyes. Man, I loved every bite. My buddy shared his cajun fries with me and they just as tasty although a bit on the greasy side. Apart from costing an arm and leg, the meal was pretty awesome. Will be coming back again. read more
