One word to describe five guys: It's the Bizarro In-N-Out (and if you say In-N-Out Burger you are not from Southern California - we never say the burger part). Five guys is definitely the only place I would go for a fast food burger, I like the choice of ingredients and generally the burger is cooked well. The bun is a little squishy compared to the slightly toasted In-N-Out buns though. Fries are so so. Regular fries are too salty...cajun are better. Prices are ridiculously high for a fast food joint, and why don't they have meal deals? Service is cool. I have noticed the guys are more competent than the girls at this location. Five guys has the red and white decor of In-N-out, but definitely not the cleanliness. I'm glad I'm leaving the bizarro In-N-Out for the original soon! read more

I don't understand what is so great about this place... the only reason why I ever went here was because I heard great reviews from everyone I knew. I went during the weekend, there was maybe 2 or 3 people ahead of me and it probably took me around 25 minutes to get my burger. I mean I'd assume you have the meat prepared and ready to get thrown on the grill, I didn't know you had to go and kill the cow... Once I ate my burger, I was sick to my stomach. This was somehow my first time ever trying Five Guys, and I'd say it was good enough to keep me coming back. As some previous reviews mentioned, it seems like they don't listen very carefully to your order, however. I wanted a little bacon cheeseburger (little ones you get one patty) but they mustn't have heard the bacon part. Although the cheeseburger was good, we all know bacon makes everything even better! Five Guys burgers are something like a little miracle. I've been to so many of them (Atlanta, Savannah, NYC...) but for some reason, the burgers are pretty much the same everywhere. And I find them perfect every single time. On the bright side you could say that their burgers are amazingly juicy, on the other hand you'd probably note that they are dripping with fat. And here's where the miracle comes in - while most fast food burgers make my stomach feel heavy, even a small McDonald's hamburger, Five Guys burgers never do. The flavor and juiciness is exactly what I am coming for. If we go to an actual burger place (and that happens a lot), Five Guys would be the benchmark. If the "actual burger" doesn't compare, then it's not worth going back to. Five Guys used to be the best burger you could get for 5$. I have been to this location a few times now. For a burger place in the area, they are in the middle of the pack. They definitely don't beat out Shake Shack, which is only a few blocks away. They do always have tables available though, which I think is a byproduct of the location. First, expect to have a homeless person asking you for money or SEPTA tokens on your way in and out. It seems to be a great area, like outside of McDonald's. Second, expect mediocre service at the register. The last time I went, the guy was high as a kite and screwed up my order three times! Two burgers, two toppings each. That's how high he was. I thought he was going to fall asleep at the register. Despite my being nice to him, he still turned around to the line cook and blamed me for his mistakes. The time before that, the person got my order right, but was confused by a gift card, saying she didn't know how to charge it. Importantly, the food is good. Is it the best burger in Philly? Not even close. Is it the best in a 5-10 minute radius walking? Nope. Is it easy to get to? Yes. When you walk in you notice all the "awards" on the wall but if you look closely you'll see only one is from the area. I don't choose fast food often, because, well, let's face it. It's not as good and not as healthy. But, if I'm in a rush and don't mind the mediocre service, I'll settle for Five Guys or Wendy's. It's not In-N-Out, but any port in a storm. I've been pleased with their delicious fries and juicy burgers. Service in fairly quick in my own experience. I can really only fault them (and reduce stars) because of two very glaring problems with their menu. They have no veggie burger option, nor do they have shakes. It's 2011. Almost every restaurant has a veggie option. Five Guys says they have a veggie option, but it's just a bunch of toppings slapped on a bun. That's not cool. There should be a veggie burger. They could cook it on the griddle next to the onions to keep the animal juices away for the herbivores. The lack of milkshakes is also pretty disappointing in a burger place. Just down the street is the Wendy's so yeah if I want a burger quickly I'm definitely coming here. That said I think the burger is pretty inconsistent. I always get my burger with everything. Snap up a few peanuts and then I run back to my own home so nobody can judge me for eating here. I like Five Guys. I used to love them a few years ago; they were definitely my "go to" when I craved a burger. I don't know if my taste buds have changed or what, but their burgers don't satisfy me like they used to. Five Guys fries, however, are fantastic. I like how they're freshly cut like my grandma used to make them. The toppings for their burgers and hotdogs are always fresh, and there are a lot to choose from. If it were possible to give negative stars I would. The multitude of issues surrounding our order truly its unrivaled by anything I have ever experienced. Problem Number 1 - I pick up my phone order, no problems. I get back to my office and find that more than half of the order isn't there, despite being handed bags "1 and 2" of "2". Problem Number 2 - I call to ask what they could do to rectify this as my office is roughly 10 blocks away. The person I spoke to was not equipped to handle any sort of customer issue. She repeatedly said "you could come back another die and get the rest of your order". Why on earth would anyone order lunch and come back on another day? I asked to speak to a manager to which the employee relied "you're speaking to one". After a debate, I was told to come all the way back to the store and my order would be remade and we'd be issued a full refund. Problem 3 - I had to walk all the way back to a store that was aware that they had caused an incredibly inconvenience. Problem 4 - Upon returning I was told it was my fault because the entire order was presented and I simply left half of it. And that it had been sitting waiting and it wasn't re-made as previously promised. Problem 5 - The ACTUAL manager then informed me that he wouldn't be refunding anything because no one else is able to authorize a refund. Whoever I spoke to on the phone, despite claiming very authoritatively that she was the manager, was not the manager and her word didn't matter. After further argument, Mr. Manager decided to arbitrarily choose 3 of my burgers to refund. Problem 6 - When we finally had our complete order, half of it was incorrect. Items were on burgers that were not ordered, lettuce used on a lettuce wrap was bad. Customer service issues happen and I understand that. What I don't understand is how a manager and service staff is so improperly trained that they tell the customer that the issue they have encountered is their own fault. I've worked in customer service for many years and I can assure you, I would never have handled the issue in that manner. Here's a tip: The next time an issue like this comes up, try "I'm so sorry to have inconvenienced you, what can I do to help rectify this situation? I APOLOGIZE that a staff member provided you incorrect information; I will make sure to address that with her and all of my staff. Thank you for your business, we certainly appreciate it." read more

I tried this place on a whim one day and just got an order of fries. I fell in love right on the spot. Since then, I have been back a few times and have never been disappointed in either their fries or their burgers. I went there today for lunch and I was so blown away by the service, I had to write. I placed my order online like I always do, so that I can just run in and run out. I got there a few minutes earlier than my 12:30 pickup time, so I waited. When 12:40 came, I asked one of the nice ladies behind the counter about it. She didn't have my order but went to check the computer to see what happened. Well, no one printed off my order, so it was not ready. She apologized a couple of times and because of their error, she gave me an extra burger patty and a free fountain drink! Most places just say they're sorry and leave it at that. I hope that I'm not getting anyone in trouble because of this review, but I just had to say, wow, and they definitely have a repeat customer because of her. read more

I went to the new Five Guys that just opened on Walnut between 11th and 12th and boy was it fresh! Bright lights, white walls, nice clean floors, lots of seating for a fast food burger joint, very soild. If you want to look like a nerd, make sure you tell the cashier that it's your first time at a Five Guys and wait for the revelry. The choice of unlimited toppings is a nice quark, but for some less decisive people like myself, this could be a nightmare. Give me some solid, predesigned, tested and approved choices and I shine. Leave it up to me and I'll be ordering once I wake from my trance and I pick my jaw up off the floor. I managed to shake off the greeting and pieced together a bacon cheeseburger with mushrooms, grilled onions, lettuce and barbecue sauce, threw in some cajun fries and a fountain beverage. Big plus for the Gold Peak tea dispenser spitting out multiple types of iced tea; my eyes lit up as I approached the machine knowing that I was in for one enjoyable cup of sweet tea. If you're the type to blot the grease off your pizza with a napkin before you indulge, first, stop doing that, second, you may need a small sapling's worth of napkins for this bad boy. The greasy goodness is a pleasure to the palate with a nice bun to bookend the deliciousness. As soon as I bit into my burger, I was very pleased with the combo I created. The burger was great and I will be returning when I need to scratch that greasy burger itch because it definitely hit the spot. Next time I go I'll opt for the regular fries rather than the cajun style, just a bit too much for my taste, but I'm also not a big fry guy, so take that at face value. I like how all these reviews compare Five Guys to In-and-out while saying "you really can't compare them." Sure you can, you just did! Five Guys is like In-and-Out (or Blue 9 for Manhattanites) in thats its one of those middle ground burger places (Five Guys is to McDonalds as Baja Fresh is to Taco Bell. Ya heard?) The burgers are greasy, but hey, when is that a bad thing? I mean, this IS Philadelphia. I dig the burgers, think they're tasty. The draw for this place is its a fast burger thats better than fast food, and I agree with that. There is no place that gets you a burger this quick that is this good. Now thats not to say its the best burger ever (the Royal Burger or Good Dog Burger are far superior) but its a good option. 2 complaints: The fries aren't that great IMO, even though some people claim the are. Also, the wait for your food can be annoying. Since it has the feel and atmosphere of a fast food joint, you kind of subconsciously expect it to take 30 seconds, and it doesn't. But again, still faster than sit down and better than fast food, so take it for what it is. Five Guys also has lots of sacks of peanuts everywhere, which then prompts an onslaught of propaganda warning of the dangers of peanuts! This is a little off topic but, haven't peanuts been around for a while? Why is it the last 4 years its trendy to have tons of peanut warnings everywhere?? I don't see warnings for people with Celiac's in bars saying "warning! this beer has wheat gluten in it!" I have to question some of the reviewers because the burger had no taste whatsoever even with all the toppings. Anything with that much grease should be loaded with flavor otherwise why eat it? i love 5 Guys! i've been to 3 different ones and all 3 have been great. it's a place i can go to with my meat loving guy friends and still get something too. i still get made fun of but at least i can order something. i always a veggie sandwich (2.20) and i steal fries from my friends. their fries are amazing, best i have ever had maybe. you can choose from about 10 different veggies and none come with an extra change, which rules. you can also get cheese at no extra change. i never do, but whatevs. also, they serve Coke products here which is extremely important to me bc i pretty much only drink Diet Coke. read more

Hmm.... so I'm not a big burger eater so I was not thrilled by 5 Guys. The fries were pretty decent but the burger was so so....I thought it was pretty flavorless. True, you can watch the cooks make your burger which is a lot cooler and makes me feel a lot safer than say, McDonald's, where you don't know what in the name of God they are doing to your sandwich. Five Guys is a welcomed burger franchise relatively new to Philly and it gives us a great choice when it comes to the All-American Hamburger. I love those juicy burgers with all those toppings and the delicious sesame seeded bun. I like my burger with A-1 sauce, mushrooms sauteed onions, jalapeno peppers and ketchup. The Fries are great! I always loved skin on Fries the best anyway. Five Guys uses fresh burger meat and every sandwich is made to order, so you may have to wait a little longer than for a Big Mac. I had an hour to kill in Center City between meetings. I just happened to walk past this non-descript location and said, "I've got to go in, I have heard about this place." So I went in just prior to a lunch rush, the place still smelled like they had washed the floors. A good thing I guess but not appetizing. I was slightly confused on the menu and would have liked to know burgers are cooked to order with no additional cost. I would have put more stuff on it. It is a fast food joint, but it is a good burger. The fries were outstanding, freshly cut potatoes are used and skin stays on. The place is simple, no fancy neon or anything else like that. A simple red and white themed place. I'd go again if wanting fast food, although they are not especially fast. But, they do have peanuts in a shell for those who wait.
