Line was out the door, which was expected since the place is so new. The cashier was super helpful, letting us know what's up with the menu. Little = one patty, regular = 2 patties. Regular fries feeds 2-3 people. Large fries feeds 3-4 people. Pros: Everything includes grilled onions and grilled mushrooms wich is a huge plus for me and the significant other. Other options also include jalepenos, A-1 bbq sauce, etc. Boxes of peanuts around the restaurant so you can snack while you wait for your food. Cons: The layout of the place was super tight. There was no room to walk around the tables or around a small line of people to get to the drinks station. Tables were super messy with peanut shells. The meal for 2 was pricey... $20 bucks for two for burger and fries? The taste of the burger was mediocre. The fries were okay... I did like that they left the skin on them, but nothing great. Honestly, I prefer In-n-out WAY over this place. The patties are juicy, the grilled onions are not messy and everywhere, the buns and spread is WAY better tasting. My husband & I each ordered the Little hamburger & 2 orders of fries. One bite of hamburger & I was totally disappointed. I expected a charbroiled flavor burger & the bun was soggy. Although the topping was free, the burger was still bland. The texture of the fries were starchy, soggy & flavorless. Wrapping the burgers with foil actually ruins the texture of the bun. When I was in New York for work this summer, I saw on the news that Five Guys had won a #1 burger award in the U.S. (beating out In n' Out). I had no idea what this place was but it shortly after opened nearby and since then everyone at work keeps talking about this place. So naturally a coworker and I decided to try it out after work one night. When we got to the cash register, they told us right away that the little was one patty and the regular is 2. We ordered two little cheeseburgers, 2 orders of cajun style fries (extra $3 each) and 2 sodas (also extra). The total was just over $20 and we could have split the order of fries. It took awhile to get the food but you could tell the workers on the fryers were working hard. The peanuts while you wait was a nice touch. The burger didn't blow me away though. Perhaps my expectations were so high because they are supposed to be #1?? The burger with everything on it just did not "wow" me. The cajun style fries while interesting and tasty had way too much seasoning on them. The price seems a bit much as well. The Habit which just opened in Walnut Creek had just as decent burgers and were cheaper because of their combo deals. And in my opinion, In n' Out and Nations are both better than Five Guys. We left confused on how this place could be number 1 in the Nation. Perhaps other people are tasting something different than what we did. I was hoping for some huge double cheeseburger. Maybe something similar to Nation's or Carl's Jr. But no, I ate the thing in a like 4 or 5 bites. And my girlfriend's little burger or whatever was ok. Our cajun fries were good and spicy. I liked them and they reminded me of Boiling Crab Fries (from San Jose). I used a lot of ketchup but it sucked I didn't have much burger to eat with my fries. The main thing for my girlfriend and I was that we weren't SATISFIED. The food wasn't all that and we wouldn't mind putting down $30 for a good burger and fries. If you want to go BIG, I suggest exiting a few more exits and visiting The Counter in Walnut Creek. At least you know exactly what you're expecting and you can customize it to whatever you like. The boyfriend and I went on a mini burger spree over the last month trying all the different options; (habit, 5 guys burger, counter). This was our 1st time having Five guys and it was great! It reminded me of a backyard bbq style burger. Very simple ingredients put together for a great meal. We shared the reg 5 guys fries which were awesome, I love fresh cut steak fries and *bonus* malt vinegar!! Burgers are HUGE, i love that all the toppings are free! But, we originally wanted to go to Chipotle and after my husband got mad at not having his order ready as expected, we had to find another place to eat. So, out in the rain, we ended up at this joint just a block down the street. It was a huge mistake! The burger does not live up to all the "reviews" displayed on their windows. I heard all about this place and the hype about it months before the doors opened. So i was a bit excited when i finally came to eat here. Before doing so i read others reviews here on yelp, and my expectations were lowered from "In-n-out killer" but i was still hoping for an exceptional burger. I got the standard cheese burger (added pickles, mustard ketchup), an order of fries and a drink. The total was over $11. I was a bit shocked, but was hoping the burger would be worth the price. The burger was big, moist and oozing with cheese, but i was disappointed. It wasn't bursting with flavor. There was nothing special about it. It was a decent burger but, not great. They do give you a TON of fries, which i barely dented (Split and order of fries if you can). Bottom line, for the price i expected something on the line of Gott's (formerly Taylors), but ended up with a non-discript diner burger. I wont be going out of my way to go back here, if i am in the area and want a burger i will stop in, but not worth making a trip just for the burger. I've heard so much about Five Guys while I was in training in the East Coast. However, I never got the opportunity to try it while I was there. Luckily, they're expanding towards the West Coast, so the opportunity popped up with a franchise opening in Pleasant Hill (and Vacaville). I talked to a few people at work who were originally from the Eastern US about their opinions with Five Guys, and their opinions were pretty good. Since In-N-Out does not exist in the Eastern US, Five Guys is their next best thing. One of my co-workers even claimed that Five Guys was way better than In-N-Out. The "hype" was really building up for this place! So my sister and I went to the Five Guys in Pleasant Hill. The big downside about this place from the start was the prices. Five to 6 dollars is not a bad price for a burger, but especially since we have a In-N-Out that sells a burger plus fries and a drink for that same price, I consider it a legitimate downside to this place. However, what makes Five Guys attractive was those free toppings. I guess that sort of makes up for the price. The taste was pretty good in my opinion. I loved the Cajun fries. It was crunchy and still hot. The burger was not bad. It was greasy and juicy, like what all burgers should be. My experience was not bad at all. The entire meal was like it came out of an old-school burger joint, which is great for cities that no longer have such a place anymore. On the other hand, since I live near Vallejo, the entire taste and texture is very similar to Bud's Burgers. So what would be my entire motivation to cross a bridge and spend close to $10 for a burger, fries, and drink if I have a similar burger joint down the street for a slightly cheaper price? Maybe those free toppings and the Cajun fries could be a good motivator. Overall, Five Guys is an okay place. The service was good. The place was clean and the burgers are tasty. There's nothing more you can ask for from a burger joint. However, it would be nice if they can ease off from all that self-advertising on their walls. It's a place that you should definitely bring another individual to eat with since those portions are massive. I was on Yahoo the other day about the best burger in the US and Five Guys Burger and Fries was number #2. Well several of us at work decided to give it a shot. We printed out an order form, which made it simple for ordering multiple burgers. They have a great set up for selecting the additional toppings on your burger. The burgers are wrapped in aluminum foil so they were warm when we got back to work to eat. The burgers were also numbered so there was no confusion of who had which toppings. The burger was tasty and the Cajun fries were awesome. We had more fries than we could eat. I recommend this place to you if you want a good burger and you are not going to eat in your car because it is juicy. read more

I was searching through yelp and stumbled across Five Guys, saw the good reviews and thought i should give it a try. Five guys Burger and Fries took the place of E 40s old joint which wasn't very good. Well... neither is this place. When you walk in you see all the the newspaper articles of the great reviews this place has gotten across the country. But i just don't understand why. The hardest part of reviewing Five Guys is I really came in here prepared to compare it to In-N-Out since they supposedly had better burgers according to Zagat. But in the end, I came out with things I liked and didn't like: Positives: + Cajun Fries are crazy good, regular fries great as well - try them with the Malt Vinegar + Regular sized hamburger comes with two patties + "All the Way" option with many toppings as well as additional toppings all for free like A-1 sauce + Free peanuts while you wait Not-so-goods: - Didn't see any milkshakes on the menu, can't come here to satisfy my Neopolitan shake craving - Burger tasted like regular burger, I feel like larger chains (like In-N-Out or even McDonalds) have a signature taste, or maybe I go there too often, bottom line - the burger themselves do seemed overhyped - I paid close to $8 for just a burger and fries, I pay half that amount at In-N-Out for the same thing I live in Los Angeles so I hopefully will try out Five Guys in the OC sometime to see if they are any different. I came here around 2 PM on a weekend and it was really busy. It was hard finding a table. Overpriced burgers that aren't tasty. My burger was super squished, and the cheese was warm (not melted, just warm). I only asked for a couple of toppings (cheeseburger with lettuce, sauce, cheese), and it was pretty expensive for a burger that was small. Another poster hit it right on the head - 5 Guys is definitely not an In N Out killer! My knocks on 5 Guys: 1. The bun is far too soft to hold up the meat and toppings. I really like at In N Out, you can order your bun "extra toast" and it comes out extra crispy. 2. I don't like the way they wrap their burgers in foil. When you do this, the steam just adds to the sogginess of the bun and the toppings. It also smashes everything together and the burger doesn't look as appealing. When you get an In N Out burger on the other hand, you get a beautiful hamburger, where you can see the crisp lettuce, pickles, and tomato, along with a the beautiful butter glow on the buns. 3. Why don't we get a tray if you're dining in? I was little perplexed at first when they didn't ask "For Here Or To Go?" and just served us in a bag. It's hard to eat from a bag and such a waste! Another win for In N Out there. 4. Does 5 Guys have a secret menu? As mentioned earlier, you can get an In N Out burger "animal style" order your bun "extra toast" among various off the menu options. I doubt you could do this at 5 Guys. 5. The seating at the Pleasant Hill location was really cramped and tight. At In N Out, I feel like I have room to stretch out and I don't have to hear everyone's conversations. 6. What's up with the solo bathrooms? Not enough facilities in my opinion for a restaurant this size/volume. 7. Very pricey - for this price, I can get a charbroiled burger (charbroiling trumps frying anyday!) with fresh cut fries and a drink for 6 dollars. Well, this place disappointed me greatly! That is saying a lot because I went in knowing it wasn't my type of place. First of all, all they offer is hamburgers and hot dogs. Which is fine if the food is quality and the establishment has something to offer the dining experience. This place has none of the above! A complete gimmick! it is a non-drivethru In and Out! They even hand cut their fries, which was the best Part of the meal. I got a hot dog and wasn't impressed, it was about the quality and taste of a ballpark dog. The hamburgers were fried and thin, but their gimmick is hand-formed patties! Big deal! No where is there a claim of quality beef. Their are no signs saying their beef is free-range, or grain fed, or without hormones. So, their is nothing special about the food that deserves a visit over another establishment. The service is so slow that you could fill-up on soda before you even get your food. But this goes along with the gimmick, they're hand-forming the patty and hand-cutting the fries...NOT WORTH IT! The family and I went to Five Guys for the first time. I'd like to think that the burgers taste better than In-N-Out. Five Guys over In-N-Out. (Well I'm not really a fan of In-N-Out anyway because I think the patties are microscopically thin). We all got bacon cheeseburgers with ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and grilled onions. Very tasty. 1 out of 4 of us didn't like fries. The burger taste: I give it a smooth 4/5. There will be a Five Guys opening up in Antioch just about 5 minutes from where I live, and I must say I don't think I'll be going there too often. Why? Because the burgers costed a grip! Way too pricey. The total came out to $40 for 4 bacon cheeseburgers, 2 regular fries and 2 large drinks (we shared fries and drinks). This means you'll be paying a minimum of 10 dollars for a full meal here instead of probably 7-8 dollars or lower for a pretty similar quality burger. Maybe they're making up for the abundance of free peanuts available? Anyway, I'm pretty sure In-N-Out is cheaper, and just about 90 percent of other fast food burger chains. ;) Above all, it was a good burger, but I probably won't be going back anytime soon, and I MEAN anytime soon. If it wasn't so expensive I'd definitely go back sooner and a bit more often, because the flavor really was there, don't get me wrong. I'll be heading over to Nation's Giant Hamburgers before I head over to Five Guys again. Hey, I don't give out five stars easily, in fact maybe never before. But as far as fast food burgers go, there is nobody even close. That includes In & Out or anybody else you want to throw out there. The menu is very limited (burgers, hot dogs and fries) but what they do they do really, really well. The little burger is not that little. It is simply a single patty burger. There regular burger is a double patty. When you order, you can customize your burger. All the normal add ons plus some interesting items like grilled unions, grilled mushrooms, jalapenos, BBQ sauce, hot sauce and peppers. The burgers are extra juicy, really flavorable and totally satisfying. The fries are natural cut potatoes with skins on. You get a massive order and they come regular or cajun style which is not too salty and not to spicy but really good. The hot dogs looked great, but I didn't try one. Maybe next time. While you are waiting in line of for your order, they have cases of peanuts for you to snack on. Nice touch. When was the last time a fast food burger place gave anything away for free (If you are thinking Mac Donalds Happy Meal toys you really need to rethink your whole approach to burger choices). Waaaayyy over-hyped. Since it was my 1st try I figured to go with something basic...Cheeseburger with the regular fixins and reg fries. Took forever (15-20mins) to get my order and on top of that the burger was a mess in a greasy/sloppy kind of way. Fries were ok. I'm not a skin-on kinda guy so I wasn't enthused. The wife enjoyed her mushroom burger but wasn't in love with it. Her cajun fries were kinda lame. Kids hot dog was fine. I mean how do you mess up a hot dog? Since this is a new site maybe it will just take a little time for them to perfect their craft. But I can say for $25 and getting 2 burgers, 2 fries, and a hot dog = not a great value. I honestly do not understand 1) why Zagat rated this place higher than In-N-Out, and 2) all the buzz. When I heard Five Guys was opening right across the street from my house, I was excited to try it. My hubby and I walked in the door and were promptly greeted with boisterous yells: "Two in the door!!" Jarring, to say the least, but also kind of fun. The overall atmosphere is kind of odd, a slightly brighter version of the interior of Fuddruckers. Now for the food: yes, they have a lot of toppings. And you will need all those toppings to make up for the quality of the meat. They cook all their burgers well-done (!!). The patties are thin and flavorless. I would almost rather pay $3 less and get a Jumbo Jack. They give you a lot of fries, and their quality/taste is just OK. You are suppose to go directly to the "Pickup" window. Well the folks there today didn't speak English very well, I told 2 different people at the window my name, twice each & they still didn't give me the order number or call my name the way they said they would. The burgers were pretty good, i gotta say. The bad thing is that the bun was so weak on the bottom that it split apart in after a bite or 2- which caused a very messy dinning experience. The seasoned (i got the Cajun) fries were cooked well but the seasoning lacked in flavor. The ingredients in the burger were FRESH.. like the bell peppers were straight from the grocery store, not drenched in something unknown and wilted. Same goes for all of their vegetables. oh yea, I decided to put everything on my burger which was a lot. Quality of the ingredients were amazing, proportion to $$ rating is not the best.. Spent $10 on a normal burger and fries. Burger size is similar to IN-N-OUT, so not that big. Idk if the menu says this but the normal burgers are actually 2 patties.. so um, the small burgers are one? Free peanuts, which in some places I heard are encouraged to just dump them on the floor but I did not get that impression here. Five stars for being better than most. Came in on a Friday evening expecting huge lines, there were none. The tables were full however, so kudos for getting the orders quickly and filling them quickly. We ordered a single cheeseburger, which they call small, and a double hamburger, which is called a medium. I had read about the monstrous servings of fries here so we ordered one regular fries. No drinks were ordered and with tax it cost around $13. Which is a skosh higher that that California you-know-who fresh burger place, whose initials are In N Out Burger. Not sure which is better, probably the one closest to you. I think at this time the closest In N Out to here is in San Ramon, which is a 25 minute drive one way. Loved the free peanuts. read more

My wife and I like to burn a lot of gas for so reason no we drove out to Pleasant Hill from the city to try this place out, perhaps catch a movie and wander around a bit. After eating at Five Guys and getting a few cupcakes across the way, we couldn't get out of the area quick enough. Get us back to the city. The surrounding 'Downtown' is basically a clone of all the other 'city' malls and promenades we escaped from when we moved here from Southern California. All the major 'high end' fast food places are represented: Chipotle, Stone Cold Steve Icecream, Daphne's Greek, Jamba Juice. So sterile, so artificial, so urban grotesque. But we're here to review burgers. Like it or not, if you open a new fast food burger joint anywhere in California, you will be judged on the In-N-Out scale. There's no getting around it. My wife is a native and I've lived here since I was 11, so we have been properly indoctrinated in the ways of In-N-Out. When In-N-Out finally arrived in San Diego in the late 80's, it was a certifiable Big Deal(tm). I've loved them ever since. So, is Five Guys as good as In-N-Out? I don't think so. Close, perhaps in the same league, different, but not better. I enjoyed my burger, it was greasy and tasty. I ate it fast enough where the bun did not turn to mush as others have complained about. (Hork that think, man!) Their patties are thinner than In-N-Out and are cooked longer, but I got a good beefy taste out of it. If In-N-Out and Five Guys were next door to each other, I'd eat at Five Guys once in a while for a change of pace, but there are more things to consider. Five Guys has In-N-Out beat on toppings. They have a zillion of them. I put bacon and BBQ sauce on mine and constructed my very own BBQ Bacon cheeseburger. BBQ sauce at a burger joint is unheard of and I was thrilled to see it there. They decidedly don't have In-N-Out beat in three other important areas, which give a decided edge to In-N-Out when considering overall experience. First, the fries. Anyone that says these fries are good is certifiably insane. The 'fries' here are soggy, limp and tasteless. I don't know how you can deep fry something and not have it come out crispy. Do they boil them first? They're brown, and I can see the fryers back there. I know they've actually been in hot oil, but how can they be so soft? I wouldn't even call these fries, I'd call them fried potatoes. Or ... something. In any case, regardless of what you think of In-N-Out fries, they are orders of magnitude better than Five Guys. Second, no milkshakes. What an egregious oversight. How can you have a burger joint and not have milkshakes? Burgers and shakes go together like pizza and soda, like tacos and salsa, like Hall and Oates. There is no excuse for not having milkshakes. They don't even have to be good, they just have to be there. I recently rode my motorcycle for 6,000 miles over two weeks. On the way home I passed through Bakersfield and headed north on the 5. I started my day in Arizona and had 75 miles to go to get to the In-N-Out in Kettleman City, but I was already craving that In-N-Out. It was late at night and the 5 is dark, you can't really see anyone driving their cars or big-rigs. Despite the traffic you still feel alone, isolated on the lonely road. Passing big-rigs and being passed by faster cars in a hurry to get nowhere in particular. Then finally, up in the distance, the gleaming oasis that is Kettleman. It's as if that wonderful outpost was put there just for you. But as you pull in you realize that you're not the only one. 100 cars fill the parking lot and drive through. You are suddenly thrust into a shared experience you were not expecting, 75 miles from nowhere. But you know you are with your people, out here in the darkness seeking out that which calls your name. You park. You go in. You order. You eat, exchanging knowing glances with the other initiates that have shared this communal experience for over 60 years. Five Guys' are located in strip malls with no drive throughs. I don't expect them to thrive in California. UPDATE: I went to In-N-Out for the first time in about a year, and you know what? Screw Five Guys. In-N-Out is way better. I just needed to be reminded as such. read more

My first 5 guys experience. I am typically a slow eater, and when I went with my friends, I was the first one done with my burger! It is exactly what you think of in a nice thick juicy fatty burger, they don't even try to fake being healthy. Just being honest. So...I gave this place a try after seeing a story on the news that it ranked up with In N Out as the best burger (I assume that meant fast food burger). First of all...I was a bit put off by the In N Out rip-off motif....red and white checkers and such. The place looked like someone was trying to copy the look. The staff was not quite as professional and well behaved as an In N Out either...not that the service was bad, it was actually good. But it lacked a bit for sure. As for the food.....the burger was pretty good, but not great. It did not live up to the hype I had heard about....which is why I gave it an average rating. The meat was ok...decent flavor, and topping choices were nice....but nothing blew me away. The fries were actually pretty good....and the best part for me. Bottom line....I would go out of my way to grab an In N Out...but would not to do the same for Five Guys. I will eat there again....but won't make a special trip. read more

Excellent cheeseburger. I went for the first time last week. I'm in the neighborhood often, and have wondered about their food. Very glad I dropped in, and I will definitely be back. The "handmade" burger came a little mangled, but after I took my first bite I didn't care what it looked like. Talk about tasty! Tender, too. It came with all kinds of stuff by default-- grilled mushrooms and onions, tom, lettuce, ketchup, mustard and relish. Of course I got mine with everything but mayo. I was totally satisfied with the mini, with no fries, but next time I'll get fries because they looked (and smelled) good. read more

The service was quick. The cashier was friendly. My burger was huge like their other chains.

Buns were soggy . Way too much ketchup on my burger. Fries were really greasy. One star for the free peanuts. read more
