Everyone across the country seems to be freaking out about 5 Guys. There are so many burger places around that it took me a while to getting around to visiting. So, I did that, where's my t-shirt? I entered with the expectations that angels would be singing over the door, but instead it was just a brightly (too brightly) lit, stark white place with a lot of signs from newspapers that may or may not be real advertising how awwwwwesome this place is. I stepped up to order, and apparently a regular burger is super sized? Thankfully, the cashier realized I was a newb and steered me in the right direction. The food was average. It was nothing worth the freak out, for sure. The free peanuts are cool. I mean, if you like eating dinner surrounded by flying peanut shells. (Whoever taught people throwing stuff on the floor was ok? Did I miss a very important 5 Guys memo?) Everything was oversized, which seemed so genuinely American. I worry about people eating this stuff solo. I am still skeeved by all the self-love on the walls. My sole visit to this location was not a good one. We had a movie at the adjoining multiplex so we thought we'd give them a go beforehand. I think we arrived during a shift change because there were more people than necessary behind the counter. With a queue of people waiting to order, I quickly glanced at the menu and ordered a cheeseburger with regular fries and a regular drink. Excited to get free sautéed onions and mushrooms on my burger, I chose those too. As we waitied for our food, we perused their wall art... you couldn't NOT see it. Everywhere you looked, there was article after articles self-aggrandizing about their own greatness. Geez, Five Guys... we get it. You are nine shades of awesome with a dollop of amazing on the side but do you have to staple the bloody reviews all over the bathroom too? The food was up and was good at first bite but nothing to rave about. About 2-3 bites in though, it became increasingly apparent that the hamburger bun was soaked through with the liquids from the sautéed mushroom/onion. No matter, I'm doing lower carbs anyway so I got a knife and fork to tuck into the meat + veg part of the burger. I found it to be not as good as that first I'm-so-hungry-anything-tastes-fantastic bite. I wish I would have read the menu better because I would have specified a single patty. I like beef and all but damn, it was too much burger! And my fries were regular but my friend got Cajun ones. Midway through them, he said that the spices ran together and that if he were to ever come back, he'd stick with plain. We had to wipe down our table because it was sticky. I usually don't have complaints about five guys. Every time I order through DoorDash, I never have a problem. However, physically going to the location, you can't get a correct order because of a language barrier. I asked for a bacon cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, jalepenos and a1 sauce with no bun. What I got was a bacon cheeseburger, with lettuce, tomato, raw onions, ketchup, mayo, mustard, jalepenos, and mushrooms on a bun. That is not at all what I asked for. Not even close. We had to repeat our order 3 different times and it was still made wrong. Even if I were to have them make it again, there is no guarantee that they'd get it right since they couldn't understand us in the first place. I'm all for everyone having a chance at employment, but if you can't communicate with your customers, you're going to lose them. My new favorite burger spot in the North Seattle area... This place just opened up a couple of days ago in the Thornton Place complex right next the Regal theaters. A perfect spot for a tasty, cheap burger joint. As soon as you walk in you see all of the cool signs posted around the restaurant stating "Best Burger in Baltimore," and "Best cheap eats in Scranton" which give it a humorous and tasteful touch. I came on the first official day of opening and saw about 15 people by the grill and registers and it looked quite chaotic. This plus the yelling made it very entertaining. So I ordered my Bacon Burger which was two patties of all-natural beef with lettuce, tomato, pickles, hot sauce, ketchup, jalapenos, grilled onions, and grilled mushrooms (all the toppings are FREE). And it was very TASTY. Probably one of the messiest burgers I've had in awhile. I also ordered a side of their regular sized fries "cajun-style" which had a good spice and taste to them. The prices are great as well as my burger with all the fixins was about 5.50 and the fries less then 2 bucks. I tried to love it, but the high price, long wait, and pretty "meh" burgers left me pretty let down. When I first heard about Five Guys, its name was being put at the same level as Dick's and even In-N-Out. So I was pretty stoked to try it out and maybe find a new favorite burger spot. Not quite. What works so well for Dick's and In-N-Out is their speed and low prices. Two things that Five Guys does not have going for them. First, the prices are a little ridiculous in my opinion. You're gonna drop around $7 for one of the "little" burgers (one patty) and upwards of $9 for a "big" (two parties). That's not including an additional $3 something for fries, then another few bucks for a drink or a shake. So a meal for one could run you close to $20. Not worth it. The parties are tiny and lacking on the flavor side. Plus, it'll take sometimes 20 plus minutes just to get your burger. What I will say is their fries are bomb, and the small order basically fills the bag. The fries are why I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 2. Honestly, with the high price, long waits, and underwhelming burgers, I'd much rather walk across to Red Robin where I could get a burger, bottomless fries, and a beer for about the same price (maybe even less with their tavern menu). read more

The fries were way to oily and seemed like they sat in the bin way to long. Over salted as well. The fries are super greasy and not nearly salty enough. I think I added like 2 or 3 packets of salt to the fries. But this is a great place to hang out with your friends after catching a movie at the Regal Cinemas next door. The staff are super friendly, you can get free peanuts (you are just not allowed to leave with any peanuts! They write warnings on the door telling you not to exit while partaking in peanuts), and they let you stay even after the restaurant (burger joint) has closed. In N Out is engrained in my brain so I have to write this review without bias (it won't last long though). haha! Five Guys is a solid burger joint with a basic menu, great ingredients, fast service, and consistently good food. Tonight I ordered a cheeseburger (two patties) with green peppers, jalapenos, ketchup, and grilled mushrooms and it was gooood. I got the regular Cajun fries and did notice there wasn't as much as other times I've been here...still a ton of fries...just a lot less than before. The peppers were crunchy and fresh, adding a nice bite to my burger and the mushrooms added a nice texture. The burgers are a bit on the greasy side, something I could do without. I also wish they had milkshakes on the menu...yes, it's supposed to be a simple menu, but a few shake flavors wouldn't hurt anyone. All in all, I like Five Guys...I like it better than Burgermaster and Red Mill, so I think that says a lot. (P.S. This review survived the verbal assault I gave to Smashburger in Denver. I visited the Five Guys Burgers in Seattle for the first time. I got the bacon cheeseburger with fries and a water. I have to say it was a pretty good burger. Not the best I've ever had but it was good. The fries were a little limp so that kinda sucked. 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, and 2 waters came to a little over $20. That wasn't good. I think even Red Mill had better prices. Their location isn't that great either. Unless there's something on the backside it's next to a parking garage and across the street form a Toys 'R' Us. Great location, just across street from Northgate mall, which has a lot of parking. The store was busy, but not too busy. I ordered and got my food within 5-10 mins of waiting sitting down. I had a bacon cheeseburger and Cajun style fries. The bacon was just the way I wanted it to be cooked, crispy but juice grease at the same time. There are more toppings than I can imagine on my burger. I had mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and jalapeño. Best tip: Order your food online or on their app! They are fast to get your order ready and you get to skip the line. Food: I usually order the bunless burgers and this places does a great job packaging everything for you. I never have to ask for condiments, utensils, napkins, etc. because they package it all so you can go straight to eating you your meal. I love their regular-style fries (just salt), but, be warned, you will get a more than you bargained for. They always give an extra cup of fries with your order (so if you order a medium size fries, you have a "large" amount of fries). But if you are french-fry lover, this isn't a problem at all. If you order a shake, you will get that ASAP! Service: The staff are so friendly! Sometimes, they do get slammed with a lot of orders, but are always apologetic and communicate when to expect your order. I was told that 5 Guys could be compared to In N Out. Umm.. on what planet? I didn't dislike this place at all. At least foodwise. Oh, now I understand... So I didn't get all the hype on Yelp about this place. I had never heard of 5 Guys. But I did watch people frantically check to see if the Northgate location was done and when it would be and when the opening was and what their first order was going to be. You get the picture. Well, one night after classes I had no energy to cook and figured some greasy goodness was in order. I ventured here and was most pleased. Being opened late automatically gives it a good rating in my book and the service and food followed suit. The staff was nice enough for random teens and let me take my time pursuing the menu. The burgers were alright. As the boy said, they reminded us of Burgermasters but better. And they were not in the same class as Red Mill. But still, a good burger overall. What makes this place special are the french fries! They are quite possibly the most decadent fries ever. Apparently they even have a white board where they tell you where the potatoes came from that day. Cooked in delicious peanut oil and treated like delicate morsels of holiness. I of course did not know this as I was about to crumble the bag closed and leave, one of the kind staffers looked at me mortified. He quickly took the bag and opened it, checking on the fries. And politely informed me that the fries needed to breath so they would stay at their optimal crunchiness. I thought he was insane and just smiled, nodded and backed away carefully. Ever noticed that the people who go on and on about how good they are in bed...aren't? The same can be said of Five Guys, a venue that never met the self-congratulatory framed review it didn't like. Walk in there and you'll see every rave review that could be dredged up from papers like The Cedarbrooke Daily Trumpet or the The Tarrytown Wolfwhistle Press or the likes. Anything, sweet Jesus, ANYTHING--but bare space on the walls when proclamations of their own awesomeness are in such worldwide plenitude. Could it be this that exacerbates the disappointment? I think it might, actually. Maybe if you didn't have to stand in line reading how orgasmic it would all be, it wouldn't be so ridiculously anticlimactic when you get a pretty average burger. The staff is nearly always very, very kind, and mostly very efficient, which is why I'm going with three stars. They're also more than generous with their French Fries (one order should suffice for up to 3 people!); I just don't particularly like the fries, so more is not of any use to me. The burger meat is average, not especially thick, and while not as chewy as Dick's (I am no fan of their burgers) they're considerably less tasty than Red Mill or Rain City. The bread is a little flaccid. One time I tried to call in my order and the person who answered spoke almost no English. I have absolutely nothing against people who do not speak English; I'm a globalist, baby! But if it were my business, I would not enlist those employees to answer the call-in order line. As it happens, the ordering process was almost Abbott-and-Costello comically bad (trying to spell words). I then determined from the accent that the fellow spoke Spanish, so I began to order in Spanish. He laughed in relief...but oddly, he still transcribed the order completely wrong...so although I'd ordered jalapenos (theirs are much hotter than the usual marinated kind, be warned) on my burger, we got 4 burgers instead of 3 (and were charged for 4) and all of the burgers had heaps of scaldin' jalapenos on them, making the younger one cry. Ay ay ay. When the error was discovered they re-made the burger, but it was a bit of an unnecessary gauntlet. It was crowded, busy, and noisy, but how can I knock off a few stars for a place being popular? I can see why they're drawing in such crowds. First of all, they have a great location. It's mere feet away from the ticket window at the new theaters at Northgate, plus it's right across from the mall so they get customers from both venues. Secondly, they give you stuff to munch on while you wait. There are stacks and stacks of industrial-sized bags of peanuts that you can help yourself to as you walk in. Mmm, appetizers. The menu is straightforward and easy to use. You either order a 'regular' or a 'little' burger (2 patties vs. 1) and pick the toppings you want. They also have stuff like corn dogs, veggie sandwiches, and grilled cheese. At first we were aghast at how many calories were in the large order of fries, until the nice lady taking orders told us they usually serve 4-5 people. And although the two of us were hungry, we opted for the small to avoid the guilt. I had a little cheeseburger with tomato, lettuce, and ketchup. The patty was great--hand-formed and never frozen, as advertised. And even though there was a rogue onion in my lettuce, it was just seriously tasty. As far as the 'small' fries go, that's where I'd claim they have false advertising. Sure, they only show you that it's a small 12-oz. cup full, but they don't mention that it overflows by at least three times. And in no way is that a bad thing. They're hand-cut and salt, and not too crisp, not too floppy. WOW! As a Five Guys virgin, I wasn't really sure what to expect. Would it hurt? Would it feel good? Would I regret not doing it sooner, or would I wish I hadn't done it at all? Not that any of that matters once you bite into the deliciousness that is their burgers, and tear open that soon-to-be-greasy bag of delicious fries. Their fries... oh, their fries. How can one little starchy stick of fried potato be so flipping delicious? I don't know, and I don't care, just keep 'em coming.
