I've been here twice and I'm really disappointed. You can easily order 2000+ calories of food and it's not even that tasty. Last time I got the burger (with two patties) and all of the possible non-sauce toppings. When I pulled it out of the bag it was driiiiiiipping with oil that congealed as it landed on the table. I knew that meant I was either about to have one of the best or one of the worst burgers of my life. In reality, it was just bland. How did they do that? All the toppings, so much grease, and still it's just blah. Totally lame. The cajun fries are good and they give you an insane amount, but that doesn't make up for the burger. So my one-star rating is for the food; I don't care about the ambiance of places and I also realize this is a fast food joint. With that disclaimer, let me give you some real talk and tell you that I find the clientele of this place to be disturbing. I sat in there with my friends for awhile and saw many people come and go. Many Asians came through and they all looked normal, healthy, and happy, but every single white person had definite health issues. There were obese children with their obese parents, sickly old folks carting around their medical equipment, and probably the fattest man I've seen during my five years in the Bay Area. I was excited to try Five Guys because of all the hype and I had heard of it long before it made it to the West coast. Everyone tries to compare it to In-N-Out but there is no comparison. I like that you have more options of toppings but more is not always better. My burger was greasy and the fries were just ok. We had the cajun and regular fries and I wasn't impressed with either. Certainly a place where you won't leave hungry. The burgers here are celebrated for being old-school with their big, hand-packed patties. True, they are old-fashioned, backyard-barbecue burgers. I just wish they could be a bit more consistent in the cooking quality. The fat-to-meat ratio is there to allow for a consistently juicy patty, but I find it the burgers sometimes veer on the dry side, especially around the edges. The fries remind me of the 'chip truck' fries I used to get as a kid: loads of them, freshly cut and unabashedly oily. Best to keep them in the cup/bag for a few minutes to allow at least some of the grease to soak into the paper, rather than your circulatory system. I'd lean more towards Super Duper Burgers these days, now that there is one in Valley Fair. The burger there is consistently juicy and the fries, while also greasy, are served in a more moderate size. The burger was tasty and I like that they include grilled onions and mushrooms, although I found the flavoring of the toppings to be a bit weak. Maybe the 'shrooms came from a can? Mandatory well-done isn't really my style but true to their promise, the burger was pretty juicy. Kinda makes me wonder if they're injecting something into the burger to make it that way? The double burger was a surprise. My wife was utterly appalled by the notion of two burgers and immediately removed one of them. I'd rather have one wider burger just because the two-stack is a bit hard to fit in my mouth, but I went with it. I do think they should warn you on the menu that a "hamburger" actually includes two hamburgers. The fries were good albeit a little heavily fried. A shade too crispy for my taste, but I like that there was skin on the potato. Last night was my first time at 5 guys. Mom suggested it, and its close to where I work so we decided to give it a go. Honestly, I was somewhat confused upon entering. The decor and tables seemed very strange to me. Some tables were bar like with tall chairs, others were standard height. Idk, something about that was just weird to me because there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the arrangement. (not that this observation has anything to do with ANYTHING, just something I noticed. haha) We order Me: mini cheeseburger with grilled onions and lettuce Mom: mini cheeseburger with red onions, lettuce and pickles Brother: Cheeseburger with bacon The food was actually pretty unremarkable. The buns were small and squishy, the meat was dry and flavorless. Overall, it was terrible, but I was expecting a little more based on the hype. However, I did appreciate the ability to customize your burger at no extra charge and there was a lot of toppings to choose from. One thing that was rather irritating is that there water cups leak. Not just a drop, mind you, a full on leak. I had to refill my glass like 3 times in 20 minutes because all my water leaked on to the table. When we were leaving we mentioned it to the staff and they said that they were aware of the problem and offered us new cups. I dont know if I am just not hip enough or what, but I don't quite understand the theory behind the peanuts. Peanuts at a burger joint? Maybe I am missing something. Let me start by saying I don't eat burgers unless it's from In N' Out. I am picky about my red meat, an even pickier about my burgers. I don't do In N' Out to-go either because it doesn't taste the same as dining in. This review is being written for two reasons: 1) to compare In N' Out with Five Guys as everyone seems to do, 2) to compare Five Guys locations. The young lady at the cashier who was bubbly and sweet was Cianna. I told her about my 1st experience at Five Guys a few months ago, the one around Almaden Expwy area, and that it was just o.k. but I was willing to give it another shot. My boyfriend told me the Sunnyvale location is busier and produces tastier meals than the Almaden Expwy location we went to for my first visit. Cianna was patient, listened to the story of my first experience, and vowed to make my 2nd visit a much better one. First visit to Almaden Expwy location: tables weren't that clean, kind of had to wipe it off ourselves. The cheese was not melted on my burger which is SUPER disappointing in general. And the water from the soda fountain machine tasted terrible. Please use a stronger filter or something. Second visit to Sunnyvale location: Cheese still not melted on burger. Soda tastes good, not watered down or anything. They get an "A" for customer service because MY particular visit and encounter with Cianna and her team that day was attentive. But still, the bun at Five Guys just sucks. It doesn't hold up well to all the ingredients, especially if you order your burger "all the way," meaning all the extra toppings on the board stacked on. The last few bites of my burger are messy and falling apart, a huge reason why I don't consider Five Guys as my first choice when I want a burger. Skip the traditional sesame bun guys, because your fingers sink into it as you take each bite, and it's gummy with its bread all flattening as you eat. In N' Out ALWAYS takes GOLD when I want a quick and cheap meal that doesn't break the bank and is consistent in quality almost every single time. The cajun fries are delicious at FG and that's where they have their leg up over In N' Out. They hook it up when you order the "little fry" but their choice of sauces are boring. In N' Out and their "spread" gives your burger and your fries that extra something special you were looking for. In this day and age, simply offering regular ketchup and mustard just don't cut it in my book. How about 2-3 exciting sauce combinations offered that people can self-serve and dip their fries into? And please melt your cheese...if I wanted raw, unmelted cheese I would ask for it...also looks like processed cheese like Kraft singles quality, instead of a good piece of cheddar like Tillamook or something. When you order "animal style fries" at In N' Out, you can see the thick cut piece of real cheese that gets put on top and melted down. Five Guys, please don't cheat me on my cheese with that fake looking stuff. The patty is juicy, I'll give them that, but overall, it's not some super exciting burger I crave, as I do In N' Out burgers. Bottom line, In N' Out burger + Five Guys cajun fries = best burger and fries meal, hahaha! If I went back to Five Guys it would be to Sunnyvale location, not Almaden, and would look forward to Cianna as my cashier again. --- Looks Like I'm West Coast re: Burgers --- Read about it in Inc Magazine, saw it in the papers, and one just opened up near our daughter's weekly music class. So we were psyched to try it out. Crowded but I actually crowds at a restaurant (if you're not in a rush). But overall, a disappointment for me. I guess I'm an In n Out guy. + They put two patties in their burgers. Even for this meat-lover, I felt a little over-meated by the end, but you really can't count that as anything but a plus. + The patties do honestly feel hand-formed rather than hitting the grill as a frozen patty. + Love their "everything is included -- nothing is extra" philosophy regarding the burger. + They don't skimp on portions of anything. The regular serving of fries is pretty generous. Their burgers as previously discussed are pretty huge. + Decent value for the money as it comes to size and filling you up. + Fun decorations inside. A little tacky on how much self-promotion inside (I get it, you've won tons of awards but listing every single one all over the inside of your walls makes it feel like a college application), but it's fun and bright. + Awesome shared courtyard outside. The shopping plaza has done a great job of this. Found some excellent food options (Rubio's, Pinkberry, Panera, Pizza My Heart, etc.) and then designed a fun, sunny (with shade options) pair of courtyards that's hip, well-spaced out, and accessible. - Burger LOOKED good, it was big, but it didn't taste good. Not that it was bad, but mostly just that it was bland. Perhaps the meat not seasoned enough, perhaps not enough sauce (they use straight up ketchup, mayo, mustard but didn't taste a lot of it). - An old "been in the fridge awhile" taste to the lettuce. Couldn't taste the tomato at all. - Really limited menu. Occasionally (_really_ occasionally), I'm disappointed with In N Out because of the sparseness of their menu. Five Guys is even more sparse. Biggest omission for me today was a milkshake. - The staff looks busy but given the number of them, it feels the food could have been dished up faster. Hate to keep going back to In N Out, but In N Out probably has half the staff and can get food out faster, and they're both dealing with really fresh ingredients rather than pre-packaged service accelerators. - I like crowds so lining up for food was actually fun for me. Besides, everyone was so excited to be there, that was a good vibe. But the dining area is a complete zoo. Tough to be in there. Highly advise going outside in the nice shared courtyard. * Fries were just ok. So after seeing the 5 Guys beat out Inn 'n Out for best burger in Cali, I decided to check this place out with a friend. Huge line out the door, but actually went very fast which was cool. Lots of condiments to choose from for the burger and 2 different types of fries. I got a regular bacon burger (2 patties) with lettuce, tom, onion and bbq along with a small cajun fry. Order was made relatively quickly, though as a previous commenter said, seems like a whole lot of people touch each order, but whatever. So they hand us the paper bag with our food which is already soaked through with grease from the fries, thank God we were eating in, I wouldn't want that bag in my car without a grease tray. The fries were ok, but were really kinda soggy, though the cajun spice was a nice change. Now to the burger, it was ok, just ok. I really wish I could say more about it, the meat was fresh as were the condiments, but overall I just couldn't justify the price vs. the taste. The burger alone is almost the same price as a Double Double meal from Inn 'n Out, and well what else is there to say, it just didn't cut it. A great new addition to the SF bay area. A bit different from In-n-Out (burgers have more variety - i.e. with bacon) although I feel the higher-end fast food atmosphere is common between the two. (Not that I'm a big fan of Fuddf**kers) Here's why: The 'choose your topping' gimmick works best if you actually do it yourself vs having someone do it for you. My cousins that live in Sunnyvale suggested we get take out from Five Guys. I tried the regular burger with grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, and all the normal toppings except no pickles. Regular fries feeds 2 people so we made the mistake of getting two regular fries which left about an inch of fries at the bottom of the bag that we couldn't finish. Their regular burgers r with two patties which for me is excessive so I am happy I asked them what made their burger small. I am a cheese lover so I got the small cheese burger with all veggies and no jalepenos. The cheese taste like the cheap Kraft kinds so not happy at all. Their fries were mushy and greasy. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger with everything on it and it was bland the only thing that stood out was the 4 jalapenos I ordered extra..Burger was warm to the touch but not hot, cheese wasn't melted and the meat fell apart instantly.. Cajun fries are way to salty and have no " Cajun" taste what so ever.... The music is extremely loud and it is difficult to carry on a conversation with somebody directly across from you on top of that all you hear is yelling in the background from the employees shouting out the orders. The GM on duty last night needs to brush up on his customer service skills instead remembering the "golden rule" The customer is always right he became very defensive and insulted my wife..not cool ! I have to say a Manager by the name of Rey was very apologetic and wanted to right the wrong we were dealt by the GM in my opinion Rey should be the GM he was very friendly and was concerned with our overall happiness. In a word. Horrible. What a gut bomb! I do not understand the hype. Maybe it is an east coast thing, but the hamburger was heavy, tasteless and unappetizing even with grilled onions and mushrooms. The fries were dripping in oil, limp and yucky... my husband and I only ate about 10 fries of the order. Much more expensive than In- n- out, and not worth a second trip. Came with the co-workers on this crazy opening day. One of them hails from Atlanta and is familiar with the chain from the East Coast. After getting there, the line was already out the door, but as we kept track of certain people, it moved decently fast. We were inline about 15 min or so and waited another 5 for the order. Bacon cheesebugers and "all the way" as they describe it for everything. Pretty tasty and along the lines of In N Out if not a half notch or so higher end. My curiosity peaked when this chain restaurant opened close to home, especially considering all the accolades it has earned from several different sources. Prices are very reasonable (No item on the menu over $6.19), portions are more than generous and their online ordering system is convenient to use if you're picking up food during busy times or are on a time limit. I went w/o pre-ordering and I waited no more than 5 mins during the weekday dinner hours. A few of the many awards it has earned include: -Zagat Survey Rated 2001-2010 -Washingtonian Magazine's "Readers' Choice" #1 Burger every year since 1999" -"#1 Burger for Lunch in NYC" by Time Out New York '08, -"Best French Fries '09" by Colorado Springs Gazette -"The Best $5 Burger a Man Can Eat" and "The Top 10 Things We're Psyched About" both by GQ Magazine '09 Burgers are available in "Little" size, which means 1-3.5 oz. patty and "Hamburger/Cheeseburger" contains 2-3.5 oz. patties. I ordered a little cheeseburger w/BBQ sauce and a small order of regular french fries. Two people can easily split the sm. french fries especially if they're both ordering burgers. The burgers were definitely filling and superior to fast food taste wise, however, the fries weren't my favorite. They were soggy, greasy and nothing special. I didn't try the Cajun fries which the clerk described were "Very spicy" and advised customers who didn't like spicy foods against ordering. I wish they would offer sweet potato fries, which I love! Free peanuts in shells are available to everyone which is nice (and unique). They're located in boxes on top of the trash cans. Personally, I'd choose a different place to put them. It is nice to be able to start w/a plain hamburger or cheeseburger and then add FREE toppings to it-including grilled onions & mushrooms. It's annoying to have to pay extra for toppings at other places and then end up w/a $10+ burger! This place is totally recession friendly!! Hot dogs, cheese dogs, bacon dogs, grilled cheese, veggie grilled cheese and veggie sandwiches are also available. Nice that they offer a vegan sandwich option. Staff members were quite friendly and helpful in answering questions about the menu. The atmosphere was very noisy to the point of it being hard to hear your dining companion, bright white w/red for the color scheme and had sacks of potatoes that they use for their french fries stacked up in the dining room. The potato sacks were very different to see as part of a places' decor, but part of what make it unique, I guess! I had the bacon cheeseburger and fries. The bacon was crispy and hard, absolutely perfect in my opinion. But American cheese? Seriously? As far as burger joints go, Five Guys is one of the best! I wouldn't consider Five Guys a fast food place, these burgers are restaurant quality deliciousness! So many options to choose from too! I can't eat more than the little hamburger, which is the only burger with one patty. Totally customizable in every condiment imaginable. Today was a terrible day because we discovered five guys in the west coast (yes it's bad news since it's bad for diet and bad for my waist line). I'm not a huge burger fan (whenever I have a burger it sits in my stomach all day) but if I ever felt like one - I'd have Five guys burger & fries. When we moved to the west coast, people raved on about In & Out. I tried it one day when I was feeling really hungry but unfortunately had a real bad experience at In & Out (fries tasted like 2 days old, dry and horrible). I love this place. Sometimes you want a good cheap burger with a bag full of fries. When that time comes, Five Guys in the place. They've got a plethora of topping options, a friendly staff, and a random box of complementary peanuts. Sometimes, it does get a little weird. Like the time I saw a lady eating her peanuts, standing right over the peanut box, spitting the shells back into the box. Or the first time I had a mess of a burger, a thin, pounded out patty that looked nothing like the picture on the wall. But like a good book, every experience is different, and the past few times I've been here, I leave greasy and happy. One added bonus is Pinkberry across the way. Not that you need to add on calories of any kind after you partake, but if you do, you might as well pretend to be healthy about it. Love it. read more

East Coast moves to the Left Coast. This must be the culinary rage as the line for lunch as others have noted goes out the door! This gave me plenty of time to ponder my options for lunch. The free entertainment is watching all the frantic activity behind the counter. Am amazed they don't sweat on the food as well! All well coordinated red outfits too. Once you get to one of the two cashiers I placed my order and my guests. My guest is trying not to get a ambulance ride to the Intensive Cardiac Care Center so he special ordered his burger. Me, I go for it and have all the free toppings with BBQ sauce! Then the fun begins as we find a vacant table with chairs and wait for our number to be called. I ordered a regular order of the Cajun fries and glad I did as I got the equivalent of a large as more than a paper cup full were in the bottom of my bag. Thanks 5 guys! Some interesting iced tea options where there, no shakes at all, but free refills fountain drinks. Was tempted to do a "suicide" drink where you mix all the fountain drinks into one. Just not as adventurous as in my days of my youth. Fun place to go with grilled onions! Should give In and Out a run for their money! Welcome 5 Guys to the West Coast. Getting back into the groove. Does the west coast family burger giant have anything to fear? Not in the least. There's a plethora of wrongs that can't justify Five Guys as a contender. Fixins - standard. Buns - not supermarket, but unremakable. Fries - Uniform and forgettable. Dairy - dude, really? A burger place with no shakes. That's just wrong. But let's get to the meat of the matter. Biting into my Small Bacon Cheese Burger, the patty was found to be non-existant. I mean I could tell there was a patty there. But by cooking it to a near oblivion by mashing on the grill doesn't due the meat any justice. The poor animal already got slaughtered, cut up and ground into a patty. No need to disrespect the animal further by cooking it down to a crispy shell. I'm not one to hype on atmosphere, but this restaurant is just nauseating. It looks like an In&Out that got turned into a garage that got turned back into a burger joint. Despite the open kitchen, I kept looking around for like mechanic stuff, like hydraulic jacks, tires, pneumatic tools and maybe a car lifted off the floor. Where were the checker flags and Penzoil banners? I usually like old school hair metal too, but man, listening to Blue Oyster Cult in a joint like this didn't do them justice. Not everybody is into communal seating, so booths would have been nice. Its not good eats to see somebody chewing their cud accross from you. So okay, they offer the customer the option of choices for your burger. But in the realm of other burger joints, both independent and chain, it really doesn't matter.
