4/27/15: They have shakes now! I think Five Guys and Smashburger are the best fast-food burger chains out there (and The Counter for higher-end burger chains, but that place is far more expensive.) Yeah, out-of-state folks, and even people world-wide (including friends visiting from China and Taiwan!) have heard of in-n-out and that's what they want, but us "locals" know what's best... Five Guys (and Smashburger for the most local locals.) I think their burgers are kinda like in-n-out's and Wendy's on steroids. Bigger. More stuff. More choices. So anyway, not gonna review the burger and fries--you probably know what they're about. BUT, I did want to share something very important, probably the greatest invention to have been made this year!!!: 1. Milkshake $3.99: Toppings/favors are FREE. Yes, unlimited number of toppings, no matter what you choose gonna cost you 4 dollas. That's it. Next time you're shelling out $6-7 for a shake, you just think about this. Just the value alone already places them above any other fast-food milkshake there is. BUT............ what's the great invention??? This: The Secret Recipe: Cherry Bacon Oreo Cookies Salted Caramel OMG........ The cherries and salted caramel make for an awesome sweet+savory richness. Can't really taste the oreos, but they're their somewhere doing their magic. And then frickin' free bacon!--so crunchy, and salty, and fatty. Gawd.... Yes, I am lactose intolerant. Yes, I am gonna pay for it. But my office is only 100ft from the bathroom. And heck, I hiked 7mi yesterday climbing a 1/2mi vertically, so I deserve this sweet and heavenly treat k? Five guys has 1-upped In-n-Out. Why? Unlimited toppings and now the option of ordering online for in-store pick up. Admittedly I probably will never go out of my way to eat here, but since it's close to work and offers the option of ordering online - it's a go. In-n-out still has their long lines during peak time that unfortunately cannot be expedited. Sorry. This location is fairly new as the whole complex is fairly new. Noon time gets pretty hectic here as most of the time the line extends out the building. Can't stress enough the pleasure of ordering online. Traffic is madness since the neighboring businesses are all yummy food options as well. The staff is fairly friendly - kind of a hit or miss. Seating is available inside or outside. I definitely enjoyed the outdoor seating as most of it was in the toasty sun. The 'little cheeseburger' was jam packed with all the toppings. It was good, but fell apart easily with the now soggy bun. I kind of wish the patty was a little bigger to fill my edge bites. It's like In-N-Out's evil twin: FIVE GUYS IS BETTER BECAUSE: - Much more customizable without needing to memorize a crazy secret menu. They even have different types of fries, including Cajun fries (yum). - Much happier, more animated staff. It's possible this is just cause they're newer and these guys will become disheartened over time, but right now I'd rather hang with these guys than the robots at In-N-Out. - Free peanuts, though you have to know where to get them. I didn't see 'em the first time I came. - The meat doesn't stay together as artificially as an In-N-Out patty so it feels more homemade. - Near Toys "R" Us. IN-N-OUT IS BETTER BECAUSE: - They sell shakes! Sure they aren't very good, but how can you look yourself in the eye and call yourself a burger place and not sell milkshakes? - Better fries. I guess some people like Five Guys's soggy style and assorted flavors, but I like my fries crispy so In-N-Out wins that one. - They do the standard burger better. Five Guys has customizability, but if I wanted to trick out my burger I'd go to The Counter. When I just want a really good burger without thinking too much about it, In-N-Out delivers. - Sometimes (usually) one patty is enough. I find it sneaky that Five Guys sticks two of 'em on their "regular" burger and you need go "little" to just get one patty. As if America wasn't obese enough... This also translates into much higher prices at Five Guys if you order the standard burger. - Personal taste, but I like how In-N-Out burgers taste more produce-y with the lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles whereas Five Guys adds so much sauce and grease that the meat dominates the flavor. - In-N-Out originated in California in 1948, is family owned, and is still only in 4 states, but mostly California. Five Guys was founded in just 1986 in Virginia and has franchises in 40 states... it might as well be McDonald's! Support your state, yo. Okay, here comes the inevitable comparisons between Five Guys and In n Out burger: - BUNS: Five Guys came out with these 'classic' hamburger patties with sesame seeds on them. They're good, except for the fact that they're super soggy... so unless you like your breads to be smushed at the end of your meal, In n Out has better buns. - MEAT: SUPER JUICY! Eating at Five Guys didn't feel like a 'fast food' experience. The meat that they served reminds me strongly of having a bbq at your own backyard. It didn't taste oddly preserved, and in short, it was REALLY good. It is also bigger than In n Out's burgers. - FRIES: I LOVE that they have Cajun Fries here alongside regular fries. Sure, it would have been better if it was spicier... but since they gave me a ton of fries for the 'small' size, I guess it's alright. - TOPPINGS: The all you can pick toppings [for free] was a FANTASTIC idea. Those grilled mushrooms really made a difference in my burger. Was definitely bummed out at the lack of spread [aka. thousand island sauce] that really made In n Out's burger unique... but again, like I said, the resulting burger that I had here a more home grilled taste to me. - EXTRA CREDIT: The PEANUTS!!!! I can't figure out why folks are so excited about this area. Yes, the idea of deciding your desired toppings at no additional cost is appealing, but honestly I'd rather pay more money for a better tasting burger. I had a cheeseburger with BBQ sauce, and grilled onions, grilled mushrooms. The bun was (kind of wonderbread ish), the meat was flavorless, and mushrooms and the onions were forgettable. It was not horrible, it just wasn't anything I feel like I need to consume again. My friend shared her Cajun chips with me - she got a regular size but the piece was huge. They looked like they had tons of spice on them, but were fairly flavorless. I wish I had taken my else. read more

I don't understand some of the negative reviews of this place. To those complaining there is too much meat: Get the little burger. It is only one patty instead of two. To those complaining the fries suck. They are restaurant style, and they're executed well for what they are: To those complaining that it is really expensive. Well, half of you are exaggerating the prices, but if I go to Jack in the Box and order a combo, it's going to be $9 or so too if I order anything beyond a Jumbo Jack. To those saying its slow: Have you ever been to a busy In and Out? Really? To those complaining it is really greasy: Seriously, what did you expect? Anyways, the meat is fresher than in and out, the toppings are better (i.e. compare their grilled onions to the mash that in and out gives), and you get free peanuts. Free peanuts! My son picked this place for his Birthday dinner. All 6 of us packed in the car and came to eat. No drive through so we had to park and haul all 4 kids into the restaurant. The music in this establishment is extremely loud but we all ordered a burger with bacon and a bacon hot dog with Cajun and regular fries and drinks. $42.79 I had ate more than half of my burger when I realized there was no bacon. After checking my receipt I brought my burger to the counter with my receipt and told an Asian guy I believe his name was Sakea "Excuse me, can you please check my receipt I ordered bacon but I didn't get any" He rudely replied "We all make mistakes" and didn't even bother to look at my receipt. I responded with "OK I understand everyone makes mistakes but can I have a slice or 2 of bacon so I can enjoy the rest of my burger?" I think here is where the loud music works against him I assume he didn't hear me because he again replied very rudely "looks like you ate the majority of that burger already" His comment upset me to which my reply was "I'm NOT asking you to make me another burger I just want a slice of bacon!" He grabbed some foil and threw some bacon in it crumpled the foil then handed it to me. I wanted to leave but they kids had to finish their meal so while we waited an employee by the name of Rae came by and asked us how we were doing. I did vent to him and he was so nice and promised that if we came back to find him and that he would make sure our families next experience was perfect. I wish I could give Rae 5 stars he had the customer service that Mr Sakea had completely lacked!!!!!! I will NEVER be returning. The food pales in comparison to IN and Out burger. Anyone who has kids knows that it's also nice to have a drive through which they have one at IN and Out. The little burgers are regular sized burgers, the other option is two patties. The burgers are super tasty, with lots of yummy options like grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, A-1 sauce, jalapenos, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, as well as standard burger toppings. While you wait for your made to order burger, you can help yourself to some peanuts. Fries come two ways: regular or cajun. The cajun is tasty. A small serving of fries is ginormous and plenty for two or more adults. I had my first visit to the legendary Five Guys last weekend. This place has been described to me as the "best East Coast burger place" and "better than In n' Out"... tons of hype! I tried the bacon cheese burger with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, and tomato, as well as the cajun fries. The burger itself was nice and juicy, but nothing too special. (Perhaps I am missing the point?) I did think it was juicier than the burgers you get at In n' Out, though (though Five Guys doesn't have special menu items like Animal Style). The cajun fries were pretty good... the seasoning was pretty tasty, and all the fries are made from fresh potatoes (hence the sacks of potatoes displayed in stacks next to the line). I also liked their Southern-style sweet teas. Verdict: Five Guys was decent (and much-hyped) but nothing mindblowing. In the end, it's still just a burger (although a juicy one)! read more

Yes, I'm reviewing another fast food chain, but when a girl wants a burger, a girl wants a burger. I visited Five Guys for the first time the other day with a coworker who suggested we order online before going during our busy lunch hour. That was definitely the right decision, as our order was ready when we arrived. Good thing my coworker told me a little about their menu before I ordered, though, because as a newbie, I'd never know that a "hamburger" meant 2 patties and a "little" meant 1. Why don't they take In-N-Out's cue and name their 2-patty burger a "double"? Also, their "little" wasn't exactly small. But I digress... I ordered a hamburger with tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, pickles, and ketchup and a side of fries. The fries were crispy, and it was a good call for me to get the cajun spice on the side so I could try it out without committing to the cajun fries in case I didn't like them. (Thanks, GK, for the tip!). Verdict: Liked the cajun spice, but I think it would have been too overpowering for me if it covered every inch of the fries. Greasy. Large portions. Uggggh. I was told that Five Guys was better than In-n-Out. I'd like to say, it is not better for the following reasons: 1. The burgers are super greasy - good, but incredibly greasy. 2. The fries are greasy - like, stains the brown paper bag and you have to use all the napkins in the napkin holder to avoid staining your clothes greasy. 3. There isn't a drive through - at least not at this location. But if you're up for a huge burger with everything you could ever want on that burger, and don't have a low tolerance for greasy food, this is your place to go! To be honest with you, I think I had too high of expectations for this place. For the simple fact that it's always so packed when I drive by. I finally decided to try it out and give my usual burger place a rest (In N Out). I ordered a small plain cheeseburger and a regular hamburger w/ everything on it and one order of fries. The dollar signs on here should be 2 not 1. It came out to be $14 at the register and I didn't even order drinks. I took it to go since there was no where to sit in there. The size of the burger was smaller than one at In N Out and Five Guys had foil around it too. I noticed that there was too much bun. the patty itself wasn't even visible. After one bite I already knew this place was not was it was supposed to be. There was ZERO flavor in the patty at all! I ended up taking 2 bites and giving the rest to my dogs. The plus side is that you can add any toppings with no charge oh and the fries were delish. I would never come back again. I rather stick to my In N Out. read more

Just to cut to the chase, Five Guys is good, but it doesn't beat In n Out. This place seems to get overhyped by everyone. Don't get me wrong, it is good, but I just feel it's overkill. At Five Guys, you get the choice of a hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon burger, or the hot dog. All the burgers come stacked with 2 patties, so it's more or less a double double. The nice thing about Five Guys is that you can have all the toppings you want, free of charge. That means you can get mushrooms, onions, BBQ sauce, etc. Shoot, you can even get everything on the burger, but it might not taste good. With fries, you get the choice between cajun fries and Five Guys fries. I can't really taste the difference so I just go with the original. Beware though, a regular sized fries has so much potato up in there that it takes 2-3 people to finish one serving. Sure the portions are intense, but the price reflects that too. A meal will run you around $10: $5 for the burger, $3 for the fries, $2 for the drink. After you order, make sure to grab some of the free peanuts that you can munch on while you wait. Staff... Very friendly. Smiling and very courteous. Service.. A downer. They weren't busy at all and they pretty much got all of our 3 burger orders wrong. (1 burger) i ordered a little hamburger plain. I got a fully loaded hamburger (2 burger) i ordered a reg. hamburger with out lettuce and tomatoes. I got a hamburger with only lettuce and tomatoes. (3 burger) i ordered bacon cheeseburger everything on it. I got a burger with no bacon and no cheese but everything else on it Pretty much a bummer. Upside, they did remake all of our burgers and we got to keep the previous burgers. Downside, one of the new burgers they made were wrong again! Had my 2nd Five Guys experience at this location. Tried it for the first time at the San Jose location a while ago and didn't like it. I guess 2nd time's the charm! Things to note: You CANNOT compare this place to In-N-Out, otherwise you'll be disappointed. It's like comparing apples & oranges, because In-N-Out is it's own thing haha. If you're craving a good burger, this place will be good. If you're craving In-N-Out, this place will not be good. Portions are HUGE, so if you normally get a double at In-N-Out, you're good with a regular at Five Guys. Wide selection of toppings, which can make or break your burger, but I'd say definitely get the jalapenos (they're the real deal, not the mild pickled ones). I'm really sad because I wanted to like this place but the burger didn't cut it. The bun was really dry and that ruined the whole thing for me. I thought it was interesting that they used raw jalapenos as a topping. They were thickly cut too, what a mouth burn. I think that if they were thinly sliced they would work really well. I wish they had a selection of cheese, but just American is on the menu (I think). The fries were the redeeming factor, I loved them, ate too many of them. The peanuts were cool. I know East Coasters know their food, so maybe the West Coast 5 guys just isn't living up to the potential. It was really good-quite basic and simple in every way! order,get a bag with your burger and or fries sit or go-bang! Delicious! It's difficult to compare to In N Out because at Five Guys, you can literally create a custom burger with any assortment from their selection of toppings and sauces - each burger is unique if you make it unique, while at In N Out, you have limited options unless you order off their secret menu. It feels similar to In N Out, in appearance and in the way things are run, but it definitely has less seating space. The burger is incredible - one of the best ones that I have tried. I usually get a hamburger, all the way (all black-lettered toppings) with a side of cajun-style fries (the smallest size is still too large for me) and free peanuts. My most favorite thing about Five Guys is the person who announces the number - very very enthusiastic and he gives off a positive vibe! Opening weekend! Couldn't be happier. Disclaimer: I'm from the DC area. I ate at the very first Five Guys in Arlington back when I was in middle school. I spent the first 22 years of my life on the East coast. And I loved it. Double Disclaimer: I now live within a 5 minutes' walk from In-N-Out. The first meal I had when I moved to California was an animal-style Double-Double with chiles (thanks to my friends' advice), extra crispy fries, and a neapolitan shake. I will love In-N-Out until the day I die. I once ate lunch, then dinner, then lunch the next day there. I also loved it. In-N-Out wins on most of the technical marks -- toastiness of the bun, crispness of the lettuce, evenness of the spread, consistency of the flavor with burger after burger after burger. But, for sheer satisfaction -- like, Bruce Bogtrotter-level satisfaction, when you're hungry for a real-deal cheeseburger, and as you're eating it you get fuller and happier and fuller and happier -- for a juicy, greasy, complex-ly flavored burger, where the meat patty itself is the most noticeable and most remarkable part, you HAVE to try Five Guys. My favorite personal combo? A regular (i.e. double) cheeseburger plus grilled onions, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, BBQ sauce on the patty, and mustard on the bun. Second favorite is grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, with equal dollops of A1 and mayo. At the very least, you need to get grilled mushrooms and/or onions. You need to alternate every bite of burger with 2 bites of cajun fries (ask for extra seasoning). And, specifically, you need to top your burger with items off with the so-called "Red Menu," whether it's jalapenos or A1 or hot sauce. Steaming-hot burger protected with foil in one hand, fries held in the seasoning-covered fingers of your other hand... it's the most visceral, most hearty fast food experience a chain can offer 5 stars for Five Guys. 5 stars for America. read more

Overall, the service is good, the food is good (but messy), and the speed of the workers is decent but could be faster. I can only comment on the cheeseburger, as I skipped any fries or drinks. The burger was fresh and packed full of flavor, I just need to order less toppings next time so it's not so messy. It wasn't the best burger I have ever tasted, but it was definitely delicious. Some of the items are a little more expensive than other local burger restaurants, so that's something to consider. This location is up against 3 other popular burger chains that are less than half a mile away; In-N-Out, Habit, and the newly built Smash Burger. I tried the one on curtner a few times and I think it is good, but always left a little dissapointed because the burgers were always smushed. Went to Five Guys at this Sunnyvale location and they do a much better job at food prep. The burger came out big and unharmed. Presentation does make the food taste better. The fries also seemed tastier, but I could be biased because my burger was better. If you have a hankering to try five guys and have a choice between curtner and this el camino one, I would go here. read more

The menu looked good, with a lot more topping options than In-N-Out. I had high expectations from all the awards hanging on the wall. The place was packed and the line almost out the door on a week night. The burger was dry and had no flavor. The bacon? Amazingly, the bacon made the burger taste even worse because it was also really dry. Bacon is supposed to makes EVERYTHING better right?!?! As much as I loved having grilled mushrooms on my burger for free, I think I'll go to In-N-out next time I crave a fast burger. This place is packed and I don't know why. Why do people flock here when in reality the food is shit? You will lose your bun as you eat. Like where did that shit go? I didn't eat it, it melted into the burger. In reality I think you would feel better if you just ingest a gallon of melted butter topped with some bacon. (and I'm a big butter fan) What did they do to the fries and why do they taste like how chuckie cheese smells? You coming out smelling like you bathed with the burger instead of just having eaten it. 3.5 stars?? You guys have gotta be kidding. Five Guys Burgers is legit!! I usually like my patties grilled to a medium (to keep it more tender). Well, Five Guys grills em to a well done state... and manages to keep it nice and juicy. The burger comes STACKED with toppings of your choice, but not to the point where it is messy. I love how grilled mushrooms and also fresh jalapenos can be included - those two toppings really make the burger special and separate from the competition. Their regular hamber comes standard with two all beef patties w/ no hydrogenated oils used. Fries are good also in my book - fresh made with potatos, and perfect thickness. I have no idea why people are hating on this place. If it's because they had to wait in a line, well, get with it people - there is a line because they make a darn good burger! Otherwise there wouldn't be a line, would there now? And no, it did not look like the Worlds Series when I went. There was a line, but it moved very reasonably fast. Shake Shack in NYC sets the standard for best burger in the nation. We're in the west coast here so no Shake Shack. Well, Five Guys it is then for 2nd best! Let's just say, it beats In N Out (which is more fast food style), and Fat Burger. Those are the two closest competitors. Somebody mentioned Armadillo Willy's earlier. NOT even close! Joe Cable Car's and Pearls stands a chance, but Joe's is overpriced, and Pearl's is a bit heavy and too drenched.Jeffrey's is legit, but you gotta make your own. Reading all the reviews I was a little too amped up for a great burger, it was ok but not great. And although I hate to compare it to In and Out, they really aren't the winner. Coming here on a Saturday around 1:30pm there was a line out the door, line really a line. Although it moves fairly fast we waited fifteen minutes to get to the register and pay. The staff doesn't seem to love their jobs and it's efficient at best. I don't know what it is but In & Out employee's always seem to be super chipper and nice. The inside isn't a great layout either, everything seems a bit dark, very crowded. It's a medium sized restaurant but the typical red/white colors don't make this place stand out or vibrant. You can see the assembly line of workers as you wait another 10 minutes for your burger and they definitely don't seem all that happy with life. You do however get free peanuts to munch on while you wait. There is a box by the restrooms, you simply scoop as many as you want and eat! The problem? There are shells, pieces, trays all over the place making the place seem dirtier and cheaper. Yah for free, not yah for making the place less nice. The burger: I was so excited for mushrooms that came free with my burger! Where were they then when I got it? Hardly little, tiny pieces I had to distinguish between the burger and onions. I was not impressed. The patty was juicy and big though - more of a restaurant style burger and plenty to get you full. The bun was just ok, the toppings eh and in general I wasn't super impressed with it. This burger wouldn't have me coming back especially since it's a bit pricier than other places. Rating - 2 Stars I don't understand why people keep comparing Five Guys and In-N-Out as if they're on equal playing fields... In-N-Out is hands down the more superior burger joint between the two. When I tried a burger at Five Guys, the taste of their patty reminded me of McDonald's... I also overheard a customer asking if she could have her patty medium-rare, but apparently, they only cook it well-done; how unfortunate. Their only saving grace would be their fries and the amount they give you, but even then, it was super inconsistent for me. Some of the fries were soggy, some were REALLY soggy, some were burnt, some were crisp, and then the small handfuls of Goldilocks "just right" fries. In-N-Out is just as filling, but cheaper AND more delicious. So if you had to choose between the two, definitely go to In-N-Out. read more

I am really tired of reading the reviews with comments like "If you have the audacity to compare this place to In-n-Out you don't know what a good burger is." Well, it's a good thing food and our opinions of food are subjective. In my opinion, comparing In-n-Out and 5 Guys is fair because they are both burger joints. With this being said, I love their burgers because they are exactly what you would expect. Big and greasy and yummy. I didn't give them 5 stars because the bun doesn't hold up through until the last bite, but not a huge deal in my book. And the fries rock. Again, greasy and hot. The first time I tried their burgers, they were basically good, but the meat had no seasoning. With The Habit just across the street, I saw little reason to return. But I again found myself nearby, so I figured I've give them another shot. Me: Do you put salt on your meat patties before you cook them? Cashier: No Me: Can you please put salt on my patty before you cook it? Cashier: No. Me: (inner voice) WTF? Cashier: There's salt packets by the fountain machine. Me: (inner voice) But that's completely not the same thing... Cashier: We could put some Cajun seasoning on it. Would that be good? At this point, my thought was, "Well, it's better than a completely unseasoned patty, heck (being the seasoning they use on their fries) it might even have salt in it. So I said, "Go for it." and ordered 1 HAMBURGER and 1 CHEESEburger, paid and stood aside while I checked the receipt for accuracy. While waiting, the grill guy came over and asked, "Are you the one who ordered Cajun seasoning on your burger?" Me: Yes. Grill Guy: Sorry but we're not allowed to put anything on our grill. I was so amazed I could only stare, slack-jawed at the guy. He's got that huge, gorgeous, commercial-grade griddle and he can't put anything other than unseasoned beef on it?!? Double-WTF? So after waiting a bit more, dumbfounded, they delivered my order and I returned to my car...to find two CHEESEburgers. F@ck, they can't even get *that* simple of an order correct. Guess they're also not allowed to use sharp objects. Later, a friend pointed out, "Maybe it's an allergy thing." It's surprising to me the frothing vitriol some people seem to have for this place, I honestly can't figure it out. I've been here a number of times and not once have I been dissatisfied with my food; while I'm not super picky, I don't love everything either. Here's the deal: the meat is high quality, you get a lot of it, there are more toppings to choose from than any other fast food place, the generiously proportioned fries are superior to pretty much everyone else with the possible exception of Wingstop (and about 1000 times better than In-n-Out's sawdust fries), and it's relatively quick to get your food. Are there better burger places? Well, duh. But in terms of fast food burgers, I'm not sure what more people are expecting. If you don't like peanut oil, this isn't the place for you. If you are nitpicky about how you want your burger done, why are you going to a fast food burger place? As for all the In & Out comparisons, I do enjoy their animal style burgers and shakes, but I don't see why so many people have to pretend like I&O is the holy grail of burgers. This is different, they're both good. A restaurant should be ranked on their own merit, not against whatever your personal favorite is. But seriously, we're talking about fast food burger joint - go try it and decide for yourself. At worst you'll be out a couple bucks if it's not to your taste. read more

Beware of the false advertising. I walked-in based on their big sign that claims "hand-spun" Shakes. I order a Vanilla milk-shake and watch the cashier prepare it. There is nothing "hand-spun" about it :( She pulls a lever and the cup gets filled-up. Puts a cap on. Pulled a can of whipped cream, done! So I say:" what's the deal with hand-spun? Is it all BS?" This was my 2nd time eating at 5Guys and have decided that I prefer In N Out. However, this is a nice change. Cajun fries alone are worth coming here. The "regular" size is plenty for 2 people to share. Love all their iced tea options. I have to remember to tell them to hold the shrooms on my burger because it makes the bun soggy and fall apart. Employees are friendly and smiley which is refreshing. OH yeah the music!!! They play some pretty awesome tunes here. read more

Simply stated, if you come here, your wallet will love you, but your waistline will not be happy... I didn't think Five Guys was that special... it's just pretty much customized burgers which tasted okay to me. I still prefer In-N-Out down the street. Anyway, I felt the burgers were lacking flavor... yes, they were moist, but nothing too special for me. I just loaded my burger with tons of veggies. Sadly, the peppers didn't really taste like anything to me, either, since I love spicy food. Beware, the fries are addicting! Gahhh!! My friend tricked me into eating those crazy, calorie-filled cajun fries! I just discovered that the fries were 1450 calories and he did NOT tell me... By the end of the meal, I felt like there's oil just oozing out of my pores... Oh yeah... don't forget to get peanuts on the right side. My friend and I were such total noobs here and didn't know what to order/get and where to get the peanuts. It didn't help that the cashier was unhelpful and looked as us like idiots... and didn't direct us to the peanuts. What! read more

I'm basing my comparison with In-And-Out since the two are similar to me. Taste: Five Guys Cost: In-And-Out Quantity: Five Guys (unless you go the NxN route with In-And-Out) I'd say the two are tied. One thing I usually tell my friends is that a regular order of fries can feed 3 or 4 hungry men since the employees fill the paper bag full of fries. For the burgers, I love how there's many condiments and choices to choose from. Since everyone has their own preferences in taste, Five Guys caters to them all while In-And-Out only have a small but concise menu. read more

3.5 stars, at best Those who suggest Five Guys is better than In N Out need to get their taste buds checked. The burgers at Five Guys might pass muster in (rat-infested) D.C., but not here. Five Guys has decent burgers, and they're juicy, but they simply can't beat In N Out for several reasons. First, although the Five Guys burger patties are nice and loosely formed (pressing a burger patty into a shape will squeeze the juice out of it), the bun is prone to dissolving into mush. You know, the kind that sticks to the roof of your mouth. Second, although the prices are good ($5 for a little burger that's actually adequate for a meal, and $8 for a LARGE burger), they're not as good as In N Out. For example, the In N Out double double is roughly the same price as the little burger, but it's much larger. Third, the fries, although thick cut and tasty, are too expensive. $2.69 for a side of fries? Really? Even if they're freshly cut potatoes, over half the price of their little burger. They also have peanuts available, but really.. who goes to a burger joint for peanuts? This isn't a dive bar. Five Guys has a lot of options for what you can put on your burger, but if you want options, go to The Counter. It's more expensive, but at least you can go whole hog and get things like fried eggs on top. Ultimately, Five Guys is a cut above McDonald's, but it's not worth coming here when In N Out is right down the street. read more

It's funny; Five Guys fans seem to love it when I say "I hate In-N-Out." And In-N-Out fans seem to love it when I say "I hate Five Guys." It's only when I mention that I hate both of them that people suddenly get upset! So, here we are: everybody seems to be raving about Five Guys and, honestly, I just don't get what the fuss is all about. But let's go ahead and give a full review just to be fair about it... The restaurant has an interesting vibe to it. Large bags or crates of peanuts line the walls of the restaurant, just to reiterate that they fry their food in peanut oil (if you have a peanut allergy, it may be best not to come to this franchise!). Service is friendly enough. Like other fast food places, you order at the counter, and then retrieve your item once your number is called. As for the food itself, well, let me start with a disclaimer: I don't really like fast food; after all, the reason it's called "fast" food is because you have to eat it FAST, or else you might actually taste it! So, some of my opinions on fast food may be seeping into the rest of the review. With that in mind, I did hear a lot about the fries fried in peanut oil, so I figured I'd give a try.
