I had my review for this place mentally drafted before I walked in. Something along the lines of "Is this the best that the east coast can do? They don't hold a candle to In-N-Out". I had to scrap that draft because, Five Guys is a serious contender in the burger wars. The meat and buns are good but, that's not what makes a burger to me. I'm a toppings whore and Five Guys allowed me to pile them on. Grilled onions? Oooh. Mushrooms? Yes, please. A1 sauce? Yeah, hell yeah. Jalapenos? What - they're raw and fresh - yessss! The burger size ranges from a single patty to a bunch of patties so size is very customizable. The burgers come foil wrapped so, it's essential to unwrap and enjoy right away before the heat and toppings makes the bun soggy. Cajun fries FTW. These are big and chunky fries topped with some seasoning that reminds me of taco seasoning, jambalaya spices, and some crab boil seasoning rolled into one. Despite the cajun name, they had very little heat but, lots of flavor. My bf lives for A1 and jalapenos. He now compares every burger to the one he had at Five Guys and is even willing to brave a visit to my 'rents in Vacaville just so he can eat there. read more

When I studied for a quarter in D.C, 5 guys got me through. However, now that I am back in California, I am sorry, but In N Out makes a just as delicious burger for a lot cheaper. The 5 guys burger tastes like a perfect backyard burger-- the one your Dad used to make. They load it with quality ingredients and make a pretty filling burger. Their fries are great! Cajun style has some real good flavor in it as I prefer them to In N Out fries. However, Burger and fries here= 1200 calories and ten bucks-- I still had that gross feeling that I get when I eat too much of a fatty food. All in all, coming from Davis, I can get Burgers and Brew for about the same price (actually cheaper if you count the fries), so I probably wont come back. read more

Send this garbage back to the East Coast. My friends and I went here because we heard it was the fastest growing restaurant franchise in the United States. Since it is a burger place in California, you can't help but make comparisons to IN-N-OUT. A burger, fries, and drink cost $11 bucks here. NOT Worth it! After hearing all raves in the bay area, I waited for the Vacaville location to open. When we finally got a chance to go, it certainly wasn't worth the hype. After finding our way around the sacks of potatoes, we did encounter a very friendly employee. She told us the regular burgers were two patties, so that seemed like the way to go. I liked the fact you could get any toppings and I picked all of my faves. I asked if the fries were crispy and her response was something like, crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. Sounded good to me, so now we had to decide between the regular and the spicy. I decided to try a small order of each so we could see which we liked better. Two burgers, two sodas, and two fries, a little over twenty dollars. Seemed fair. We waited, and waited. This wouldn't have been an issue if our food was hot. OK the fries, the multitude of fries, were hot but they certainly were not crisp, unless you dug through the piles and picked out the tiny little ones. The spicy fries, not our thing and I normally do like seasoned fries. Now the burger. Dry bun, hot, hot cheese melted to almost not being there, on a lukewarm burger, or should I say two luke warm burgers. Believe me, one of those burgers would have been enough. In conclusion, soggy fries served in a greasy bag, dry bun, room temp burgers served in foil. Twenty plus dollars.....Not going back. I really can't see (or taste) the reasons for the hype about this place. The fries were saltier than a loaf of bread soaking at the bottom of the ocean. And from what I've heard, the cajun fries apparently taste like fries that have been seasoned with that powdery junk you get with ramen noodles. The burgers were only slightly better. They were extremely average, almost criminally so, and far off from being the best burger in terms of taste by any standard. Perhaps it's the location. My husband and I went today and I was extra hungry after a run. I got the little cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was just the right size. My husband ordered the larger burger with everything on it except mayo. We both enjoyed our burgers. They were juicy, messy and delicious! Okay, so I have been dying to settle the age-old debate between what is better: Five Guys or In-N-Out. I hadn't gotten a chance to eat at Five Guys when I lived in Socal so I was thrilled to randomly see one on my way to whitewater rafting. I'm happy to say that I'm glad I grew up eating In-N-Out because it is better BY FAR. Five Guys is known for their fries being cooked in peanut oil, and I'll give them that, their fries are better than In-N-Out, but I like Jack in the Box and Burger King fries better---slightly crisp on the outside but perfectly soft within. The burgers at Five Guys are larger, but much messier and less tasty. There are just too many ingredients to truly enjoy the burger. Additionally the hamburger bun seems like it's from Costco, it becomes smushed, thin and soggy before you've eaten eaten even 1/5 of the burger. I am glad I got a chance to try Five Guys, but I will stick with In-N-Out from now on. read more

Well since every one is comparing this to in-n-out ill start there. Burger at five guys was about twice the price but not twice as good as in-n-out. The burger was great though it was the perfect size delicious and the toppings are free with about 14 different toppings. The cajun fries were freaking delicious I don't remember the price but who cares it was worth it It came in an overflowing container the size of a soda cup. The drinks were bottomless and there are peanuts to snack on while you wait which is kinda tite. Five guys is not somewhere I would go more than once a month. This place has got nothing on IN-N-OUT or RED ONION. TGIFridays and Cheesecake Factory have better burgers than this place for sure. They make ordering way more complicated than ordering a casual burger should be, and they take their sweet time making your order. All of our burgers came out cold, and all though we ordered them "all the way" the burgers were dry and in need of some major flavor. All I could really taste was the pesky and cold clammy mushrooms that would start to slip out the burger bun. Really could not care for this place, me and my group of 8 will probably never eat at Five Guys again. It wasnt a bad experience, the food just really sucked. Apparently this is a "big" East coast fad. If ever I have any friends visiting from there, I'll be sure to take them here in hopes to surprise them. By the way, I have no east coast friends. Sure they have an "immense" selection to top off your burger but think about it, they pile all that stuff onto your burger and smash the shit out of it to hand off to their customers. After hearing everyone and their moms rave about it on facebook and the many claims of "IN-N-Out Killer," i broke down and experienced it for myself today. it was absolutely delicious! i ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with grilled onions, Lettuce and Tomato - I didn't want to go too crazy with the condiments because there are a ton of options (all free). I wanted to actually get a taste of the burger patties and the sandwhich itself. to my surprise, my burger was made with two patties and not just one and aparently this is the way it normally is there and i'm sure if you want more you could easily request for more! : ) So i'm sitting here and reading everyone's comments of "it's way too pricey for a burger..." Let me tell you, folks: you pay the money because you're paying for quality and the quantity you are getting. you want a cheap burger, go order from the dollar menu at mcdonalds because you definitely get a ton more food here than in-n-out. i know when starbucks first came out, everyone complained about spending $5 bucks for a cup of coffee and then eventually everyone accepted it - This is the same thing. The burger itself came out to about $6 bucks and some change. The fries (go with the cajun fries if you like a little flavor to your fries) came out to i think about $3 some odd dollars but its enough to feed two people with left overs to spare and large drink (go with the regular because you get free refills) came out to a couple bucks so grand total i spent about $12 bucks. sound a lot? when i go to black bear diner i spend about that much (not including tip) for a ton of good, quality food. So is this an actual In-N-Out Killer? I wouldn't go that far. Its more of a preference of Starbucks vs. Peet's - they're both good, just depends on what floats your boat! It's not In-N-Out, even with all the toppings and free peanuts. You line up to the cashier, order it ET, (everything) and wait at a table for your number to be called. It's a small place, and not a lot of peanut shells all over, thanks to the staff who quickly clean up. NOT the place if you have an allergy, but the signage on the door is easy to miss. They don't want you taking peanuts outside due to allergic reactions, but we did anyway. Don't tell anybody. While it WAS good, as all the empty wrappers, even from the children who eat almost nothing, showed. I think with all the toppings, the real reason you get a burger is for the meat, it all gets lost. I did get one with everything, sans mushrooms, but added relish, and it was good, but still can't touch In-N-Out. The burger was big and satisfying, but devoid of bacon. 3 measly quarter strips of what looked like pre-cooked microwave bacon. We ordered just about everything on the menu, from Grilled Cheese to Hot Dogs, and ate everything. Could be we were just hungry. The Cajun Fries are a hit. Bonus points for each burger being individually numbered so you don't get confused with somebody's order. You wouldn't want to take a big bite and find onions if you didn't want them, do you? Self serve beverage bar can save $ if you don't mind sharing. Order your burger with relish, but no pickle. You'll be glad you did. They take plastic which was good as I ran out of cash. read more

I give 5 stars for the friendly employees and clean store. I give 3 stars for the food itself. I mean come on peeps - this is a national chain and the food has to be pretty much same-same at all their stores so I don't blame this store for not liking my burger too much. It was my first time here and I've always wanted to try this place. I see the name on Entrepreneur and the like type magazines and they came from a family background (I believe it was the father and 4 sons who first started this). Out of all the burgers I've had, I thought Five Guys were overpriced. I mean $12 for burger, fries and a drink? I could have spent 1/2 of that on In-And-Out, but hey - I really wanted to try this place and I was ready! ;) I'm a Fudd's kinda girl so in comparison, I would have rather spent $12 at Fudd's. So second time through was a lt better than the first, more because I was restrained on my first order, I tried to keep it simple and that was a mistake. Went for the works minus pickles and added jalapeños which was a pretty tasty burger. Was it In & Out, probably not but I would say just as good especially since I can pick and choose what goes on it. The fries though are much better for my book than IAO which for me means a lot, mix the two and it would be perfect. As for this location it is in a nice center and the restaurant itself was hopping but still pretty nice for a strip mall location. Decent burger and great fries... Plus they have three different diet sodas which I know is a little silly when you have a 1000 calorie burger but it just means more burgers and fries before the waste band needs to be let out. read more

Large establishment with free peanuts and plenty of seating. What can you say Five Guys does a burger right. A small burger is a single patty and comes with lots of free topping options. The regular burger is double burger. The burgers are big juicy and delicous. Although I like cheese I normally dont get cheese here since your have so many free toppings to choose from. The biggest let down of five guys is their steak fries. The fries are often super greasy and not crispy. The cajun fries are the same fries lathered in some cajun spice. I've been waiting to try Five Guys out and see what all the hype was about, unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed. The burger was pretty good, just really greasy. The fries were ridiculous huge, make sure to order a regular, it's enough for at least 4 people to share, and get the cajun seasoning, it has much more flavor. I really thought the burger was better than the fries despite both were pretty greasy as hell. I'd probably go back, but not by choice. I'm not really sure why they use paper bags even when people are eating in the restaurant. It is such a HUGE waste of paper because people are constantly throwing away the bags within 10 minutes of receiving them. I think it would be better if they used trays and just put the food on there. Not to mention all the grease from the burgers and fries just shows up onto the paper bags, not really appetizing. I heard rumors that this place would blow in and out out of the water, so of course I had to go see for my self what the fuss was all about. Unfortunately I was not impressed by this place. The nice girl who took my order seemed very excited to be there and was very helpful and patient while I stare at the menu board for about 5 min with my mouth open. I finally made a decision and ordered a bacon burger with a regular size fries and it cost me almost $10 that was the first no no, but I wasn't going to judge until I tasted the damn thing first. Since the burger and fries (let me remind you I didn't order a drink) I was expecting the best effing burger ever, but when I received my burger and took the first bite I was not impressed. I felt like I could probably make a better burger at home for a lot cheaper. Maybe i was asking for to much, but i dont believe Five Guys is better then In&Out burger just because In&Out buns are toasted on the griddle with the delicious meat juice and then slapped with its secret sauce(which is a thousand island dressing w/ relish). This place is consistently outstanding. Burgers are hand made and aren't covered in mayo... unless you ask of course. The fries are killer and orders are huge. They fill up the container and then put another scoop in the bag. Small orders are like larges any where else. Any way you can dream a burger they will make it fresh for you. There is no comparison between here and In and Out.. That place is junk. People only rate them higher because of nostalgia. The fries at In and out taste like cardboard slivers. Worst money spent on a meal in years. Soggy bun(like I had to remove it because it was so gross), melted milkshake, So many fries in the bag that I never even took any from the cup of fries I ordered. But it was the Cajun fries so the burger wrapper had seasoning all over it. It was just everywhere. There was so much fry grease making the bag rip and leak on the bottom When I opened my burger, grease just started streaming out the wrapper. I give you an example. Yesterday, I was in Sacramento, I stopped by the flaming grill cafe on harbor blvd. and ordered 2 burgers. When I got home (to vacaville), the burgers were not as warm as I wanted them but 20 seconds in the microwave, and it was good to go. The bun was perfect and not soggy at all. the Frys were great and we both enjoyed our food for $22.00+ tip. At five guys horrible food, soggy and gross $30.00+ tip for one burger, fry, milkshake. I have never given a 2 star rating before, but here it is. I've been to Five Guys before at a different location and enjoyed the food, but this location was sub-par. We had a fairly large order with 5 people, but they not only got our orders wrong but also served everything cold. All of our burgers were missing bacon. One was missing a patty. Everyone's burger buns were hard and cold (to the point where we removed them because it was inedible). They gave us a small tray of bacon in apology but there was only 4 pieces and they were, again, cold. My parties were tough and chewy and clearly overcooked. The food was clearly not fresh. I had heard so many good things about this place so I was in the area and decided to give it a try. The menu was really simple and one thing I noticed was that there was a choice in burger sizes. Since it was my first time there I had a few questions about their menu items and the cashier was really helpful. The little size burger was perfect for me and the small order of fries is perfect for sharing. The taste of the burger was good, nothing super special but good. The cajun fries were probably the best part of the meal. The cajun flavor wasn't too spicy and they were surprisingly crispy and not limp like other restaurants. I would definitely go back but I won't be in a big hurry to get there. Been wondering what the hype was all about, had to try it on our way home from Tahoe. I'm not going to compare this place to In-n-Out....you just can't compare them. It's East Coast vs West Coast. But, I will say that I like the Five Guys fries better. I have never really been a fan of the In-n-Out fries. What I do like about this place is that you can get one or two patties and several different combinations of toppings and condiments to make your own signature burger. There are no shakes....again, cannot compare to In-n-Out. If you're going to compare it to something, maybe Johnny Rockets will work. Did I mention they basically give a BAG full of fries? Great fries...fresh cut and substantial unlike In and Out. Bonus: free peanuts, bottomless soda, quick friendly service. No required tips. The NOT SO GOOD: They squash their buns flat! Why!? It ruins an actually seemingly good and unique bun with body. You smell like grease when you leave. That'd be okay if they had great CBs. Better bets: In and Out, Burger City and Black Bear. I think Five Guys' burgers are a little bit better than In-N-Out's, but the fries are a step below. In-N-Out is more of a West Coast brand, I've live east of the Rockies my whole life (from MA to CO) and never heard of it before. Five Guys is more of an East Coast institution - I first sunk my teeth into one of their fresh and highly customizable burgers in NJ. A great system gets you served quickly, but without resorting to the near-microwave quality of beef you see at McDonalds. I think personal preference for Five Guys/In-N-Out will skew everyone one way or another, but they're both dependable burger joints in my mind. read more
