Oh how I wish this place existed near me. Healthy, fresh food, generous portions, friendly service, and unreal flavors. I love the Chipotle-inspired "Build Your Own Bowl" feel of this place, but with incredible, bold Brazilian flavors. I asked the employee making my bowl for some help and I was given the absolute perfect bowl. Brown rice, lemon-marinated Tilapia, half coconut-roasted sweet potatoes and half steamed collard greens, spicy coconut sauce, farofa, tomato vinaigrette, and lime. I feared the spicy coconut sauce would be too spicy, but it was just right. The balanced, vibrant flavors of this bowl were incredible. Everything is gluten-free and you can tell that their products are carefully sourced and that everything is made with quality and care. My husband's bowl was delicious too: a mango BBQ smothered slow-cooked chicken bowl with plenty of fresh cilantro and greens. And, yes, the cheese balls are addictive. I love this place! For a quick, healthy, fresh, low-maintenance meal this is the go-to place downtown. A small bowl is something like $6.50, which is a phenomenal price for getting dinner downtown. The flavors are amazing, I love it all. They don't serve beer or wine, so a fun date is to get a bowl from here and walk down to Lockhorn Cider or White Dog Brewing and eat it there. I can't begging to tell how excited I was with this concept coming to town! I grew up in Brazil and LOVE Brazilian food. I would have given five stars if it wasn't for the Feijoada. The food is fresh and very flavorful, but the feijoada was a HUGE let down. Feijoada is the national dish of Brazil, and it consists of a stew of several different pork cuts and sausages with black beans, onions and garlic. The version served at Five on Black is basically a beef stew with tomato sauce, much closer to a dish actually called Picadinho. Don't get me wrong, it was tasty and I devoured it, but it most definitely was not anywhere close to a real feijoada.... I will be back, but will order something else instead. read more

After a couple of beers at a nearby brewery, we needed to grab some food to go before heading to the airport. A quick Yelp search later, I found myself at Five on Black. The restaurant is set up Chipotle-style, so you build your own bowl with all the fixings you desire. As a result, service is very quick, and you'll have your food in your hands within a few minutes. There is ample seating in the restaurant if you choose to stay and eat your meal, but the majority of people I saw were opting for take-out. I went for a small bowl with brown rice, feijoada (Brazilian stew with beans and various kinds of meat--my first time trying it!), coconut sweet potatos, and spicy coconut sauce, topped off with farofa, spicy chimichurri, and cilantro. It was still very warm even when I ate it ~45 minutes later after going through airport security! The flavors in the bowl went together really well, and resulted in a delicious, hearty, reasonably healthy meal. Definitely a great spot for a quick meal in Bozeman. read more

I think I had high expectations for this place. We were driving through and decided to stop here for a late lunch based on the reviews. The white rice was poor quality. Almost like the kind of rice you microwave to cook. The beef was low quality as well. Many times during my bowl, I was chewing on tendon hunks that I had to spit out. The Brazilian bread, which we ordered a dozen of, were basically hockey pucks. These need to be kept warm or something because they were just hard and tough. So the food wasn't inedible, but definitely nothing I'd go back and get when I'm in Bozeman. The red pepper sauce and the collard greens were good but with a dish that simple it all needs to be good and the meat was over cooked and rubbery. Even with not being thrilled with the food, I wouldn't normally give an only one star review, the kicker was the place felt run down, definitely needs a thorough cleaning walls, tables, floors, bathrooms, plus a bunch of burnt out lightbulbs were hanging from the ceiling, including one shattered one....imagine if a piece of that broken glass fell and landed in someone's food! This is a really great option for some unique and quick food. It's a nice break from your average "fast-er" food. If you need something other then a burger, tacos, pizza, sandwiches, etc. then Five on Black is a great choice. The flavors are unique, the options are bountiful and the prices are really reasonable for the amount of food you get. Nothing special here, it's all about value. You get a decent bowl for the right amount of money. Hardly "Brazilian" but novel enough around this part of the country to make it worth the occasional visit. My big complaint is that they still refuse to introduce silverware. In an eco-conscious town such as Bozeman, it is unfathomable to have a restaurant forcing you to eat out of cardboard bowl with plastic forks. I won't be back until that changes. read more

This place is plain fun. The music is lively and so is the food. This place has paleo and lower-carb options which is what Bozeman needs. The pattern for the bowls seems to be that a small means one scoop of meat, medium means two and large means three. The beef is mild and very tender. The feijoada is a mixed meat stew (bacon, beef, chicken) and per my friend has very good flavor. Get the spicy coconut sauce if you love strong delicious coconut flavor. The pao de queijo are puffy and crispy but sadly lack the solid cheesy center I prefer, but if you prefer puffy bread you might like it. Two meals and a drink came out to $15 - bordering on fast food prices but infinitely tastier, not to mention healthier. They use cardboard bowls which is an extra nice, green touch. I like the outside seating and also the ease of ordering. You go up to the counter and basically they walk you through building your food bowl. I went with a medium bowl with a mix of greens and brown rice as the base. They layered that with the Feijoada, which is a traditional Brazilian stew that has black beans and different types of meats. Then I chose the collard greens as the side, not sauce since the Feijoada already provided the sauce and then topped it with the salsa and chimichurri. Nice modern minimalist moderately industrial venue playing a lot of 70s sounds. The service and cuisine was below average, the timid little lady so spoke softly and reluctantly informative that my partner and I gave up on trying to learn more about the food & flavors we were selecting to build our bowl, making the process feel less like exploring new cuisine and more like a facility line to produce unknown and unfamiliar sustenance. The staff being more informative and enthusiastic about serving more exotic recipes in a more familiar way may have produced a much more positive experience. I committed to the opporunity to taste new horizons though, and got the greens + rice base, feijoada, sweet potatoes, collard greens and black peas for sides, I was discouraged from getting sauce because the feijoada stew came with sauce, I looked back at the menu later and saw a "(sauce not included)" note on the sign, not sure what this means, but the final product came out a bit dry even with the cilantro, lime, smokey cassava powder, and spicy farofa. I'm convinced our meals had much greater potential, but with proper guidance (there's a reason most foreign foods are prepared for you by recipe in the kitchen I suppose). I also had no idea what specialty drinks were, assuming it was the canned coconut water and other bottled beverages in the fridge, after being seated I noticed the Tractor Beverage Farm to Fountain dispenser with some great sounding beverages (ginger, cucumber etc.) in addition to the lemonade and blossom & spice tea, which would hav been nice to know of before I'd paid & sat down. I think for days where a good ambassador for the cuisine is not present, we may have benefited from having a recommended preselection of ingredients for a preset spicy or zesty bowl. read more

Rice bowl was very dry, not enough sauce and the chicken was dry too. The soft drink fountain was all out with the exception of three choices. I was traveling through with my brother and wanted to check out this place as I love pao de queijo. I loved the bowl I got - brown rice, beef, sweet potato, and chimichurri. IT was amazing My brother got a veggie mix and enjoyed it as well. My only disappointment were that some of the pao de queijo were a little hard. But loved that I could order and pay online and pick up easily. I would go back there again. read more
