This is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. The service was extremely poor, slow to take our order, slow for food to be delivered to the table, and the order was wrong. We had to order additional food and after waiting for 45 minutes, our waiter informed us they lost the order and asked if we wanted him to resubmit it. He could have cared less. This pizza was so bland it wasn't worth the short walk over. I Oder it and am told to wait in the corner and after 20 minutes I inquire about it I was told it has been done for 10 minutes (so why didn't you tell me or call after you got my phone number?) so why did you tell me it was done. You know who I am because you ask "oh is it for K$$$". Staff gets a rating of two and the food one. It was just that bad. I guess in a tourist town you can get away with that. But since I am here a few times a month and deal with tourists I will inform them that this is a place you have to pass on. read more

Worst service ever! I cannot even comment on the food as we were 4 people sharing food and the only thing delivered to our table was 1 personal pizza. Waiter told us the kitchen screwed up and he would resubmit our order. Almost an hour later he again told us the kitchen screwed up again and lost our order. Best pizza in Anchorage, hands down. I have tried some of the other supposed "best" places, and Flattop beats them all. Great pizza, friendly service, and an impressive selection of beers. Unlike some of the other places, surprisingly there is (usually) no wait here. Walk in, sit down, and place your order. I guess Flattop hasn't been "discovered" yet. Selfishly, I hope it stays that way! It's nice to come into the place and not have to sit among a herd of other hungry people waiting for a table for 30 minutes. The barmaids were cute and the selections were varied. Unfortunately, I made the wrong selection. Since the Bears and Cubbies were playing, I was into Chicago sports this weekend, I thought I would order a Chicago tradition...deep dish pizza. I ordered the signature "907". Big mistake. It took over 30 minutes to make, and there was a notice on the menu stating that. No big deal. I'm willing to wait for good. It was not good though. The dough was not uniform and there were big clumps on one end, and thinner pieces on the other. Some parts of the pie were warm and some cold. None were hot. If you pay cash.... you might get your food. Then when asking about said food after 40 minutes of waiting for an appetizer... you get extreme attitude. First person asked said don't worry about it, it's in the kitchen. Second person said we didn't even pay for our order. We had. Then when the manager finally reviewed all of the recent orders to make sure we weren't lying.. he gives one of his cronies the cash to bring to us. As we're explaining the situation and saying thank you for the refund the guy looks at us and says 'I'm so glad you guys are being sooooo understanding' in a passive aggressive way. As we're leaving the bouncer apologized for the way we were being treated. Never once did the manager come over and apologize or see how things were. I spent a lot of time watching the World Cup here like, three times or more per week for a month because my whole office did so we got extended lunches. I really want to like Flattop, but the service is SOOOO bad. It's painfully slow, and it seems like a lot of the servers just don't know what's going on. Like bringing out your salad without having brought you silverware. Twice I ordered a slice of pizza and a salad and got one but not the other. And by slow, I mean slow. Not having my pizza, which is on a premade cheese pizza you customize, btw, after 30-45 minutes. This would have been understandable for the US games which packed people in, but it seems this would have been an obvious opportunity to bring more workers in, but alas, super slow was simply the norm. So as for the food: the lunch combo for a slice and salad for $9 used to be a good deal. After going for a couple weeks the salad shrank quite a bit and it lost the economic value. As a downtown office who eats out nearly every day, we keep on saying that we're never going back to Flattop. But eventually, we end up back there when somehow we collectively forget how terrible the service is. I'm writing myself a post-it note right now to stick on my monitor. Flattop could be great. It's a nice atmosphere and even better location. But so far, every experience at Flattop has been a sail through the doldrums of orders not taken until waitstaff are flagged down, excessive wait times to get food, and messed up orders with missing entrees or pizza toppings once it arrives. It's happened so often during lunchtimes that I'm surprised there are people on yelp having good experiences there. We have complained, but never once have we received an acknowledgement of "we screwed up" from a waitperson much less a manager. Instead it's more like, "your order must not have gone through, do you still want it?" (Reply: "No thanks, we'll go grab a slice-to-go from Uncle Joe's".) A friend likes to recall the time we waited 20 minutes in an empty Flattop for them to tell us they were out of the brownie ice cream sandwiches we ordered. Summary conclusion from 6 locals and many of their friends : Flattop is a decent place to grab a beer. The food is middling. The lunchtime service is terrible. If you want pizza downtown, try Fat Ptarmigan (good food, pricey-side) or Uncle Joe's (middle-of-the-road food, cheap). read more

Food was not tasty at all. Got a Hawaiian pizza and it had no flavor. Sauce was plain and flavorles. Also ordered a Ceaser salad and it was super dry so I asked for some more dressing. When I got the check I realized they charged for the "extra" dressing. Customer service was poor. They seem to only be focused on the bar service. I personally liked flat top- I can't really say MUCH about their food because the only thing that i've tried is their bbq chicken pizza. After a few drinks in me, the pizza tasted really good but i honestly can't remember much. I would assume that people mainly go there for the bar scene, pool tables and window walls! Yes, i love that their walls are WINDOWS! that's definitely something new here but I wonder what it will be like during the winter time................ :) I give it three stars for now only because i haven't tried much of their food yet. First time here. Very causal with pool tables, large selection of beer (of course being associated with Humpys). Staff friendly, pizza slow to come out. The pizza was....just ok. Nothing really stands out and may come back if I ever want to play a game of pool. read more

This is a cool place to hang out, we really enjoy playing pool because we're always able to snag a table, and they have awesome food.... When it arrives. Twice now we have come here and it's taken FOR-EVER to get our food both times. The staff doesn't seem to be very hurried, and not very apologetic about the wait. Just excuses. I've been here often enough that I can confidently say this is probably a solid three-star experience. There is nothing noteworthy about this place nor is it a craphole. That being said, it is a little disappointing that at-a-glance, this establishment looks pretty spectacular since it's new and positioned on a fantastic corner in the heart of downtown. And, since it's owned by a long-standing restauranteur, you'd think they'd be able to easily iron out the kinks. Notable experiences include: * Going to lunch with a group of six other people, when it was not very busy at all. It took 45 minutes from ordering to get our food, so we had to scarf it down since most of us had only an hour break during a training class. Three orders were messed up, including my pizza that had raw garlic (the type you get from the plastic container at Costco) smeared on top instead of the advertised roasted garlic. One order hadn't even been entered at all. The waiter was super disinterested and a terrible server. I can count on one hand how many times in my life that I gave a 10% or even 0% tip to a server. This was one of them. * Coming to the bar for Skinny Raven pub runs. In the beginning, the offerings for the pub run discounted appetizers were really good and one of the main reasons why I would go. They have since made the offerings only three rotating items, usually always the same pepperoni-bread or meaty snacks. This is the only time garlic knots are worth the price. * Having some really awesome service from a waitress who offered me a couple samples of beer to try when I couldn't make up my mind, even though it was really busy. * Sitting at the tiny, Petri dish-sized tables alongside the windows and trying to orchestrate the consumption of beers and a few small appetizers between two or three people. Avoid getting speared by pool sticks, if you can. * Being greeted by surprisingly friendly bouncers later in the evening. * Not being disappointed by their hummus, EXCEPT good lord, get rid of those rubbery black olives and get real kalamata olives like another reviewer suggested. This is one menu item that is great and definitely worth the price. But plz no black olives plz :| I don't go out of my way to make a special trip to go to Flattop. I'll go if it's convenient. I do hope that they become a place I do crave and that they make themselves more appealing as well as improve some of their food offerings. Edit: Day after I posted this review, I actually ended up swinging by Flat Top and the garlic knots are only $4 on the menu. I retract my earlier statement. $4 is definitely reasonable for garlic knots. They also had some new stuff on their menu and some new items for the pub run special. They were really, really good and reasonable prices. Our server was great. Upgrading to another star. I am impressed with the improvements. read more

In short. Sub-par service. Good menu if it could be implemented. Note though kitchen staff was in training. I walked in here on a Saturday night. Place was not crowded. I was one of maybe six at the bar. No greeting from the bar tender. After five min. of waiting had to flag down for a menu. Then finally a drink order. Then after 10 minutes "oh you want food". Menu looks good. Creative pizza and more. By the time my veg and hummus pie came out i could have ordered from delivery eaten and left. Not sure I'm going to cut these guys slack even though they've been open less than a month. I went in for lunch and ordered a slice of pizza and a salad. The pizza could have been a Tombstone or a Tony's pizza. Definitely not cooked in a real pizza oven. The salad was also weak, like straight from a bag, and the dressing from the bottle. I'm always suspect of restaurants that don't make their own salad dressing because I've worked in a few. They spent a lot of money renovating and the atmosphere is nice. But the kitchen needs to seriously up their game if they're going to make pizza in a town where the Moose's Tooth casts a big shadow. read more

I've posted the same review on Urbanspoon, but some people use Yelp! and Urbanspoon like me, so I thought I'd say the same thing: What makes a great "pizza"? I asked this question, and the answer is very subjective. Some people like deep dish, some like thin crust. Others, on the other hand, prefer "pan pizza". In all my worldly travels, the "best pizza" is the pizza you are craving at that moment. I went to Flat Top with no expectations, only knowing that they were an offshoot of Humpy's. Humpy's is a downtown Anchorage institution, and appeals to both seasonal tourists and locals. It's actually an interesting mix. My visit was for lunch, and I was impressed that they offered a "slice & salad" special. The "slice" could be customized with up to 5 toppings for a very reasonable price with a huge salad. Sitting at the bar, I opted to keep it simple and ordered a pepperoni and mushroom slice, and opted out of the salad (as it looked huge). It arrived within 15 minutes or so. The crust was what many would consider "thin" and it had enough yeast and cook on it to hold the ingredients, which were very high quality. The sauce was excellent for a thin crust, not to much or too little. It was slightly tangy with hints of fresh herbs. The cheese was done right, the pepperoni sliced very thin. The mushrooms were plentiful and not soggy. Overall, I found my "custom slice" very enjoyable. The atmosphere invites a very large late night crowd, and I hope they decide to offer take-out/delivery! The pool table setup is unique to downtown, and I think offering growler fills would really make this spot "pop". If my pepperoni and mushroom slice is any representation of one of their whole specialty pizzas, the Anchorage pizza scene should be put on notice! read more

I appreciate that this place is clean for a pseudo-sports bar. I'm the type of girl who won't eat her pizza crust if it's not great. That being said, I love the crust here. There was one bad incident when ordering the 'Park Strip' pizza; the menu states roasted garlic, but they used fresh pressed, uncooked garlic and it was very strong. I had to scrape off quite a bit to make it edible (and that's a lot, because I love garlic). Other pizza's I've tried have been excellent. Flattop also seems a little understaffed at lunch and has an awkward layout for it's bartenders who have to walk around the entire bar to take orders and drop off food and beer. It makes the order and wait time a bit long, but they make up for it with good beers on tap. read more

Sitting at the way less than half-full bar. Bartender is clueless. She's brought my tea and taken my pizza order. Had to point at pizza I wanted since the proper pronunciation on Margherita was beyond her understanding. Didn't bring sweetener with tea, or even ask if I wanted it, random person passing behind bar brought it. Didn't refill my tea without me asking (twice). When she's not busy ignoring me, stands by the beer taps with her arms crossed looking like she would rather be anywhere but here. Keeps putting on and taking off gloves BUT NOT DOING ANYTHING! Nice space, though I can imagine when it gets really busy people may want more tables. However, there are plenty of bar-esk individual window seats. I went at around 5 in the evening on a Saturday night, and it wasn't all that crowded. Ordered a small create your own pizza with grilled chicken and oregano... Delicious. The "small" is actually 12", so you get plenty of pizza for the $9. It was both very cheese and saucy, and the NY-style pan crust had some good seasoning on it. Even though the menu says +$2 per added topping, I was only charged $10 for my whole meal. Food was great overall, though, the staff could have been more attentive. When I went in and seated myself, at least five minutes passed before anyone came to ask me if I wanted a menu -- and it wasn't all that crowded. Regardless, I can't wait to come back! read more
