Inside were people sitting back to back a couple feet (what happened to six feet?) from each other with a small and short bit of plexiglass in between. If you come here during happy hour you can get top shelf drinks for $6.50...I'll take Grey Goose with soda water and a lime, please. If you get the "wells", you will get the stuff that is not great AT ALL. So stick to the higher quality top shelf stuff and definitely come during happy hour time frames (earlier in the evening) and you'll be good to go. They have ample tv screens, gender neutral restrooms (although only one stall, which can result in LONG wait times!) great music videos to view, and a place to sit outside and people watch if you so please. I like that they're reasonably priced. I like that they're in the heart of hillcrest. They're a great place to start your night off at (and maybe finish it at too)!! I've done both!! Bad vibes all around. From the people that work there to the people that go there, very uptight, everyone. From the time we get there we go in with our friend dressed in drag and the "bouncer" really acted like we only got let in because of our friend, like bro chill out it is a Wednesday night. My other gay friend gets cut off from the bartender super early in the night after literally one shot hence cutting us all off, like he is literally naturally loud and obnoxious not even drunk. Yeah I am a girl going with my gay friends but I feel like I am specifically being targeted by the staff the whole night?? Like it's literally a normal thing for girls to go with their gay besties? Night ended when I specifically got kicked out for dancing and accidentally touching (literally brushed it so lightly that I didn't even know) their tacky red rope in front of the dj area. Despite the changes in the front (new ownership), Flicks remain the same. We can only hope for the best as changes occur within. Drinks are fine. Like most bars in Hillcrest, you have to catch Happy Hour to get a good deal. Our visit with a group of Yelpers occurred after an event next door at 100 wines. With Yelpers, 2 hours of free alcohol is not sufficient, they have to party on. Since we mostly dominated the bar on a Saturday afternoon, the regulars were limited to 3 people on different parts of the bar. One on the patio, one on the pool table and one on the far corner of the bar (inside). I did see one other change, they moved the dart boards to the inside area away from the front. The pool table remains in the same spot. The patio remains the smoking area. Most of the Yelpers were straight and this is a gay bar in Hillcrest so with the raucousness that comes with slightly lubricate patrons, we all had fun. Flicks need to redefine itself for its audience, although primarily a gay bar, it needs to cater to a wider audience on those slow times. Coming from Chicago, I still see no dedicated video bar like Sidetracks in San Diego. Sure a lot of bar plays videos but none plays videos that people can watch and talk about and come to. Maybe those days are behind us but nostalgia is often your path to an audience. Remember the 80s are now over 30 years ago and that is definitely a new generation of customers. read more

For the most part, the staff is very friendly and do their best to serve you as quickly as possible. Drinks are good and inexpensive. The clientele depending on the night is every extremely friendly or very stand offish. The only reason I am not giving them a 5 is that the allow smoking on the patio and all the smoke drifts into the bar itself so that you are dealing with the second hand smoke. First of all let me say that when my son turned 21 he wanted to go to Flix bar he started to get great service at first then they kept giving him drinks he ended up wanting to get sick and he was told don't you dare throw up in my bathroom or you're going to get kicked out I have never ever heard of such customer service like that and frankly he ended up going to the emergency room so I advise whoever works there and whoever said that to my son to rethink the way they deal with customer service and change the way you guys act towards people. One Asian female at the bar called me a monkey. This all stared I sang Paint Me A Birmingham, and a female who was drunk keep hugging, I wasn't able to get off the stage. For one I'm still recovering from legs being fractured in 6 places. So when thus young black name security yelled at me and said I need to get off the stage now, I was very offended. I went and told the bar staff, they were white men who seemed to not care at all. As I was leaving the Black security guard followed me out and said why did you go tell on me. Then when we got outside he called me a F GGOT.... So there goes the situation. It's very said that a black male security guard can a black gay male a F GGOT and get away with it. If I had been white the situation would have been very different. I was told that I didn't belong in Hillcrest, which is a gay are of San Diego. But I'm used to that, if you are a black make that believe in black love. You are a threat to white men who objectify men of color. Gay area of town are not safe for black gay men who refuse to assimilate in white gay male culture. The Asian female that was attending the bar called me a monkey. I noticed that Flicks has gotten a lot of 'mixed reviews' on here over the last several months. And in skimming through those, I noticed that my previous review of Flicks didn't accurately reflect how I see the establishment now. So wanted to update it (to rectify this situation). It's still true that, yes, I've had various issues in the past with how karaoke is conducted at this bar. But that said, if you keep in perspective that this place is not solely a karaoke bar, then you'll be fine. It deserves a strong 5-Star rating, in my humble opinion, for many reasons outside of karaoke. They have a strong crew of hard-working and people-oriented employees. It's a fun place to go for socializing, meeting new people, or even just watching music videos (and depending on the night, maybe even requesting a few!). Never played pool here, but have several friends that enjoy coming here just for that. There's always something fun going on here on the weekends, and the sound system is always on point. The bartenders are great, and they've always been professional every time I've ever been here (despite what some recent reviews might suggest). And, there's always enough people here any given night to optimize your chances of almost always making new friends and/or having conversations with new people. Granted, it is possible to wait awhile at the bar for a drink (obvious downside to a popular place), and there are nights when it is almost standing room only. But I'm still grateful for this staple in our community, and a refreshing alternative to Mo's Universe (though, admittedly, I love many of their establishments as well). It's definitely a must-visit type business if you're in visiting. So yes, some of the reviews have been mixed of late. There are times when security and/or the bartenders have to make some judgement calls about customers that might seem questionable to those particular customers (or even a stranger looking in) without all the information. But at the end of the day, they're just trying to do their job. I've never been asked to leave any drinking establishment, but then again, I don't go to them to get drunk or trashed. Look forward to seeing Flicks continue to grow, as I know they will, and continue to serve the community the same way they have for decades already. read more

Flicks Won't Disappoint I just recently visited Flicks for the first time and oh my, I had a blast. The bar layout is spacious and appears very clean. I was highly entertained all night because the crowd was so friendly, and flat screen TVs surround the whole bar and were playing various music videos all night. The drinks are strong and reasonably priced. My bartender (CJ) is a drink making machine. I have never seen someone slam drinks out as fast as he did, and with such rhythm. He was very personable considering how busy he was. I was actually more entertained watching him work more than anything else. Great bartender and stellar service. I've lived in San Diego for four years so I've been here plenty of times, usually no problems. Drinks are decent, blah blah. I met a guy that just moved from Michigan so he had a Michigan ID. We get to the bar, there's security, checks my California ID no problem, checks my boys Michigan ID, not even with a flash night, nothing. He just saw Michigan and said "oh nah this is fake" & kept his ID! We asked for it back and he just goes "what are you going to do?" This guy is so new here, his license plate is still Michigan. I couldn't believe it, that piece of shit bouncer, completely ruined our night. Never coming back here again. I came here because I heard they had NFL sunday ticket and I really wanted a place where I could see all of the games. And I have to say, it's a really phenomenal environment for doing so. There's a wide-open standing area with a few tables and ledges to set down your drink while you scan the room and pay attention to whichever game is interesting at the moment. Great setup for Sunday football. No food but I think it'll be fine to bring your order drink and just hang out and watch. We got right in and was able to saddle up to the bar and get a our refreshing Vodka Soda w/a splash of Cran. No one was really dancing but we got that party started off right. Flicks is really hit or miss. Sometimes on a Wednesday, the cheap drink specials fill the place out, and it's a fun midweek escape. Unfortunately, though the specials begin early, the crowd arrives late, and if you have work in the morning, I find myself 'puttering out' before it gets fun. The crowd is pretty mixed; a bit older than some venues in the area. More forty-somethings than thirty-somethings, from what I could see. Mostly locals. My friends and I came in and we walked by this guy that looked like he was smoking a cigarette. While this establishment won't care about my review because they make so much money, I would like to voice my opinion on these so called "security" personnel at the door. While I do understand that wobbly people, or presumed drunk shouldn't be let in due to reasons for safety, the establishment serves alcohol. People drink. Refusing entry to someone who had had two drinks doesn't make sense. It seems to me, the purpose of their entry policies is to only allow people who begin drinking at their establishment and not anywhere else. It seems to be that this is all about profit, and not serving the gay community. I hope the owners take the initiative to re-train their security personnel and remind them why they are there in the first place. Ego and power is not why they stand at the front door.
