    fried cheese curds :)
    Sarah Y.

We were visiting Benton Hotsprings for the first time and when 4:00 rolled around I was feeling a bit hungry. It was our first time visiting the area and I didn't realize that there weren't many food options by the Inn. Other than a convenience store with limited options, the second closest place for food was actually Flo's Diner 20 minutes away. Not wanting to drive over an hour to another place to eat, we decided to give this place a try It didn't feel like we were settling or anything. We just didn't have very many options Thankfully the Diner delivered in several wags. I mean ways. More on that shortly There's minimal cell reception in the area but it's hard to miss this diner and it's 20 minutes from the Benton Inn Hot Springs. There's a mini gas station adjacent (with a significant markup but that's not too surprising given the scarcity of options in the area.) When we walked in, we were greeted warmly by someone (was she Flo the namesake? I forgot to catch her name but it's the blonde woman and she was so so kind and amazing!) We ordered fried cheese curds and two of their classic burgers- one of the burgers had a side of fries and the other burger had a side of a baked potato. I got a Diet Coke too. Total for 2 entrees, a side upgrade, a soft drink, appetizer and tip was about $60. We sat outside because we brought our furry friend with us. The waitress was so kind to her and even came out into the cold weather to check on us to see how we were doing Burgers were great. I wouldn't call them spectacular, but they're a pretty decent, solid burger. Order substitutions and customizations were acknowledged and carried out. Cheese curds were great! They reminded me of mozzarella sticks but bite sized There's a neat convenience store attached to the restaurant where you could pick up essentials or snacks to much on if you still have a bit of a drive.

Awesome food, service, and indoor and outdoor dining spaces. Amazing Mountain Views. Stage for live music too!

We wanted to try something different, so I pulled up Yelp and came across Flo's, which I've seen a few times on Facebook. I saw that it was in Chalfant Valley... "Oh, that's just outside Bishop" I said, as I had only driven that route once before from Benton. After 20 minutes on a deserted highway we arrived at Flo's which had to be the only restaurant between Bishop and Benton. The little town was pretty cool though and the views of the mountains were incredible. It was definitely different. Service was friendly. There wasn't any cell service on Verizon so I couldn't look up recommendations, so we played it safe with the Flo's Classic burger which was great. It had both cheddar or American cheese, and a white cheese as well, and had some kind of Thousand Island variant, which was very good. My parents got the garlic fries and I got onion rings. The onion rings were large, crisp, and there were a lot of them. The chicken tender dinner looked interesting (tenders with mashed potatoes, a salad and something else). I also got a strawberry milkshake (you must at a diner) which was also really good. Clean restrooms too. I found it humorous that a '50s diner was only playing '80s music ;). There is a small store in the front with necessities and things like maps for people, and I think a gas station or a pump. Next time I am the mood for a good milkshake or sundae, or feel like getting off US-395, I'll be back!

We visited Flo's a few Sundays ago while vacationing in Bishop. Chalfant is a bit out of town with beautiful views of the mountains. The service was very friendly. There were tables outside (it was still warm) but we ate indoors. A fun 50s vibe with matching decorations added atmosphere. The spinach salad I ordered (with a chicken upgrade) was delicious, as was the huge burger my husband devoured. Free refills on the soda were appreciated. There's a small grocery store on the other side of the restaurant. Clean restrooms too. We were delighted to find this unique spot. Recommended!

If you are driving through Chalfant, you have to stop at Flo's. The food is great, and they make the best malt you'll ever have.

I visited Schats on a solo road trip up the 395 to celebrate my birthday. I had heard much about…read morethis famous bakery, from its sheepherder sandwiches to the pull apart sweet breads, this bakery certainly did not disappoint. Food: When you first walk in, the impression you get with Schats is "Wow". And wowed you shall be because the whole store is absolutely stacked with breads, cookies, savory loaves, twists, cakes, pastries, and baked goods of all shapes, sizes, and flavorful persuasion. I came in prepared however, determined to try a half order each if their beef and turkey sandwiches, and decided to treat myself to some of the sweet baked goods from their extensive sweets section. While I was disappointed by the amount of meat on my sandwiches, I marveled at the flavor and textural cohesion unified in the simple sandwiches. What looks like a basic veggie-mayo-meat quickly becomes a homey culinary experience with the light and fluffy yet hearty sheepherder bread. Where you might expect an overwhelming mouthful of veg (thanks to the substantial sprouts), I'm met with a cohesive bite of delicate fresh flavors that meld together in a delightful sandwich. Safe to say, this is a sandwich sandwich. Not something stacked between bread, but a thoughtful creation that is greater than the sum of its parts. A true sandwich. The complimentary pickle spears and cookie that comes with your sandwich order is a perfect pairing, and I'd highly recommend these sandwiches if youve never tried them! I also got the Apple fritter, grandma cinnamon roll, old fashioned bar, and the apple strudel thing for my desserts to try (not at once). Each had a lovely texture. I disapprove of donuts that don't retain their moisture and texture, but Schats delivers on both marks especially for their old fashioned and Apple fritter donuts which retain a moist fluffy interior with the right amount of crisp. They are also not too heavy, a high mark in my book. The cinnamon roll was delightful with just the right amount of cinnamon and walnuts, the apple strudel thing was mildly disappointing however as the dough was overly dense and difficult to cut/bite into without squeezing out all the filling. Service: Schats staff are friendly, but this is an in and out institution. With the reputation it has, it's no surprise that things are structured to move quickly as there are a constant stream of customers flowing. Even so, staff are happy to answer questions and chat if they have a moment! They made me feel welcome despite being a clear tourist. Ambiance: Schats has a lovely charm to the interior and exterior. It is reminiscent of what I imagine a rustic German/european bakery would look and feel like, and dining at the outdoor seating or perusing the bakeries stacked displays and carts is a wonderfully charming experience. Highly recommend for a fun and lighthearted break that foodies, families, friends will love. Especially as you travel the 395! Overall 5/5 a perfect experience to add onto your 395 itinerary. Definitely do not miss the baked goodies and bread :)

Our party of six had been waiting to be seated when another party of six arrived after us. Eventually, someone from their group asked about the wait, and the male host said, "We have a table," and waved them in. When we asked about when we would be seated since we arrived before the previous group, he claimed he had already called our name. All six of us had been seated, listening and heard parties being called--our group was never called. Kayla did apologize for the mix up, since she was aware we were waiting before the other group. Since we have been going to The Stove for years, we decided to give it another try, so later in the week, we pre-ordered three pies several days in advance and later added a fourth (Kayla added the fourth). When we arrived, only one pie (the one Kayla put in) was available, and we were told we could come back in two days--even though we were leaving the next day. The male staff member insisted we had changed our order, but the handwritten order sheet in the clipboard did show what we had originally requested. The other host was apologetic but told us the mix up was because Kayla (who wasn't there at the time) made a mistake and didn't complete the order. We explained that the male host took our order. We appreciated that she discounted the one pie we did receive. Instead of eating there, we went to The Warming Hut down the street, where the service was friendly, the food arrived quickly, and our food was good. We understand mistakes happen, but it was the dismissive and rude customer service of the male host --not the mistakes themselves--that made this experience so disappointing.

The chimichurri sauce was also misleading: instead of the classic green sauce, a red mixture was served that had nothing to do with it. The coleslaw was simply awful.
