Office staff were wonderful! Dr. Shon was not. Went in with my husband for a second opinion/consult on wrist pain returning after surgery. After giving me a few minutes to explain my history with the wrist, and performing a quick examination of the wrist, he spent 40 minutes -- forty, my husband timed it! -- giving me what I can only describe as a disjointed, caffeine-fueled diatribe about pain management, patient expectations, how wrist anatomy works, and an extended metaphor on how treatment and diagnosis is like trying to put out a fire. When he FINALLY asked if I had questions, I told him I needed a moment to summarize, because "that was a lot of talking", and he interrupted me to say "Well, this is a consultation! Isn't this what you wanted?" and began ANOTHER long diatribe about how consultation and treatment worked. My husband and I exchanged awkward, tense glances for a few more minutes until he finally caught on and asked me if I had other questions. I did have one -- he asked me to wear my wrist brace, and I have two different braces, so I asked which I should use. He then went into YET ANOTHER speech about how really, it didn't matter, and here's the metaphor why... At this point, I had already decided I was never coming back. If it doesn't matter, just tell me "It doesn't matter!" Why is this quick consult taking an hour?! The cherry on top is that when we exited the exam room together, he turned to the assistant in the office to give her directions, then WALKED OFF without summarizing information, saying goodbye, or giving any sort of pleasantries. My husband and I were flabbergasted. Seriously, it felt like we were on a sitcom. I consider myself a pretty patient millennial, the kind who'll tip a server even if they spit in my food, and even I was feeling my Karen levels rising the longer he went on and on and on about "patients having unrealistic expectations" without even once pausing to ask me what my expectations were, or what I'd done, or what I was hoping to get out of this. It was baffling. Thank goodness I wasn't in crippling pain at the moment, because I might've had some choice Karen words for him. Dr Shon was exceptional for me. I had a terrible compound fracture in my right wrist (distal radius). It was set by an ER doctor and i saw Dr Shon 2 days later. I found Dr Shon on both my HC Provider website and Hoag website. I sought two opinions on whether surgery was needed and the opinions were identical. I chose Dr Shon based on overall experience during consultation. Dr Shon was very thorough and clearly described what he saw and why surgery was needed. He had great rapport with me - both highly professional and very approachable. All of my questions regarding anesthesia, pre-op, post-op expectations were clearly and patiently answered. I recall a couple of reviews that described Dr Shon as rushed and condescending - I can only say that those people probably don't understand that a surgeon and a lay-person who read WebMD before their visit likely are on two different wave lengths; i had no such experience. Surgery went as planned and as Dr Shon explained it would and recovery (12 weeks post-surgery now) has gone very well - full function back in wrist for daily activity and have been strength training again since cleared 1 1/2 weeks ago. I'm often commented by colleagues and friends about how quickly and well my wrist has healed (it was really, really broken badly). Needless to say, the quality of the surgery makes all the difference. Dr Shon was spot on in describing every step of the way - what i would feel and experience and what the goals were with me from his position. Here's the punchline - if you have a broken wrist (or hand, or anything Dr Shon specializes in), I would wholeheartedly recommend him IF - you want a highly skilled, highly experienced, orthopedic surgeon who really knows what he's doing. The scary thing about Yelp and other review sites is that if i based my decision solely on those sites, i may not have chosen Dr Shon (people complaining about his appointments running late, his demeanor during appointments, etc - I assure you these people are probably nut jobs that negatively review everything - this is orthopedic surgery, not a quick serve coffee shop!!). Thankfully for me, i based my decision on medical / surgeon's credentials, experience, medical group affiliation and the initial consultation. I have had a great experience with Dr Shon and his office personnel twice now. He treated my daughter's thumb for a number of years and after repeated injuries she eventually needed surgery. It has healed EXACTLY as he said it would. We never left his office with a question. Questions I never even asked were answered. Very thorough and kind. Then, after severely lacerating three fingers this year and going to the ER, I chose to not follow up with the Dr they recommended and called Dr Shon's office. Addressing the previous complaint stating Dr Shon doesn't listen to you as the patient. Are you seeing and expert hand surgeon for his expert advice/opinion or are you looking for someone to listen to your issues? He has a lot of valuable information and let's be real here, he doesn't have an infinite amount of time. If you get the chance to receive his advice, shut your mouth and LISTEN!!! Now, all this being said, Dr Shon was VERY pleasant and DID listen to me. He even took the time to come back in to further explain a few things when he overheard Rocky & I discussing some concerns. I'm also in the medical field and I've dealt with my share of difficult doctors & surgeons. Dr Shon is top notch! He is a true professional and clearly still loves what he does. I recently had my first appointment with Dr. Shon and I found him to be knowledgable, informative, and extremely generous with his time. He explained to me what he considered, and what he ruled out in terms of diagnosing my ligament strain. He described what steps I should take over the next few weeks and what expectations I should have along the way to measure my recovery. I found Dr. Shon to be very informative about diagnosis and also treatment. My son had injured his UCL pitching and Dr.Shon suggested MRI and then physical therapy. The MRI suggested micro tears and stress but he did not recommend surgery. He suggested the the body naturally heal itself and then move to physical therapy and then strength training. He answered each question (and we had lots) with detail. I have also seen Dr. Shon for my heal pain and find him and his staff responsive. read more

Dr. Shon is an excellent doctor! He helped me get back to the sports I love. I had a mountain bike accident last November and broke my right wrist and right elbow. His staff got me an appointment right away after I called. Dr. Shon performed two surgeries on me. After the first one and just right before the second one to remove the pins and plate, I fell while training for an ultra trail race and injured my right elbow again in March. The race is in August and I was worried that I might not be able to recover on time. Dr. Shon patiently explained the situation and guided me through the entire recovery process and my training. Dr. Shon Floyd is awesome! He is kind, knowledgeable, personable, and thorough. My family just had the best experience with him personally. My son Trenton is 12-years-old and got a huge wood sliver in his right thumb nail all the way to the base of his thumb. My son is special needs and Dr. Floyd understood that and explained everything to my son clearly. They used gas to put him to sleep before they put in the IV with anesthesia. We have 6 kids and we are actIve and have had to see Dr.Shon for everything from torn ACL, MCL and meniscus issues to broken bones and even surgery. He is the most thorough doctor who takes time and explains everything. His staff is wonderful as well. He is so knowledgeable and kind and his bedside manner is incredible. I tore the distal bicep tendon from the radius of my left arm. My family physician recommended I see Dr. Floyd Shon. I met with him two days after my accident and had my surgery a few days later. The doctor could not have been a better surgeon. His office staff could not have been more helpful. After surgery he explained to me exactly what I should expect and how long it would take be begin to recover the strength in my left arm. Everything has worked out as he predicted. Dr. Shon is my go-to doc for all things orthopedic. I was originally referred to him for a hand injury in 2004 by another top-notch OC surgeon - Wes Nottage. Since then, he's reattached a tendon in my right thumb, repaired a rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder (it's now the good shoulder), and done extensive shoulder repairs on my adult son. My family couldn't be happier. He does such a great job of explaining injuries and what your options are that we now go to him first, even if it's not an area he specializes in. Dr. Shon is an excellent surgeon and bedside physician. My dad lacerated both tendons in his thumb on Wednesday AM and needed emergency repair. We could not find anyone...then on Thursday morning I got his name and called the office, the office said he was on his way out but would wait since this was a trauma. Dad went into surgery Friday AM and his recovery went very well. Now that I look closer at Dr. Shon's credentials, It is no surprise that with degrees in bioengineering, biophysics from CALTECH and MD from Columbia, it's no wonder that my dad was told his thumb has perfect tension and flexion post repair. read more

Dr Shon is an Orthopedic surgeon at Irvine Orthopedic Associates. He was referred to me by another Doctor in the office I had previously used for my knee. I had a severe rotator cuff shoulder tear on my right shoulder. He performed a tendon repair using a straight cut across the shoulder and re-attaching the shoulder to the bone. Was referred to physical therapy after 60 days and still in severe pain with very limited motion. During each follow-up visit, when asked hard questions on why I was not recovering, he would go into a 20 minute speech on the anatomy of the shoulder never answering my question. At least twice, I would show up and he would start examining and manipulating the wrong shoulder. After almost 5 months, I demanded an MRI which showed the tendon had completely ripped away from the repair. He wanted to do surgery again, however I elected to go to Dr Bannfy at Kerlain-Jobes who went in arthroscopically. He found a huge bone spur which Dr Shon had missed and probably caused the previous repair to fail. He also repaired the biceps tendon to that my shoulder would properly sit in the socket. It is now 3 weeks after my second surgery and I am further along in recover than 5 months after Dr Shon's surgery. I would not recommend at all. read more

I Wanted to write because i would like to get the attention of the doctors here. I had a trauma and I broke my finger. while I was out of the country for one week . When I came back first thing Monday morning I called the office to make an appointment. The girl told me to come in two weeks later. I tried to explain to her I am a dentist and the injury happened one week ago and I am a returning patient . She did not care what so ever and said if you want you can go to emergency room. My question for this office is how come the nature of your business is all about emergency and You can't have any emergency appointment. To make it short I had to go through invasive surgery because by the time I saw a doctor they told me it is too late. you have a window of 10 days to get the good result. Although first time I had a good experience with the DR. Shon. I got so disappointed . The staffs decide for the doctors and for the health of the patients without having the knowledge.
