So... you know how the old story goes about how Helen of Troy launched a thousand ships because of her beauty. It was not true. She might have gotten off a schooner or two into the water but Rebecca the patissier from Fluff Bake Bar and her amazing Cosmic Brownie Cookie (with the playful M&M's on that belie an absolutely adult taste of dark chocolate and salt. Mmmm) were the impetus that launched fleets and fleets of sugar-crazed sailors. To be fair, they probably turned around the minute they ran out of Fluff Bake Bar goodies but hey, priorities. The s'mores bar (IT HAS BOURBON IN IT) and the snickerdoodle thing caused grown men and women, sworn brothers and sisters in the fire service, to plot against each other in cruel and unusual ways to get the last one (just because you lick every cookie in the box while the other members of the station are screaming at you DOES NOT mean we won't still eat them; they are that good.). Every time someone brings in a Fluff box you can guarantee every firefighter in the station will be talking with their mouth full for a while. There are also some yummy looking dog treats. Despite what ex-boyfriends may have called me I have not personally tried them but they are probably yummy, too! I am a confirmed chocolate lover and so it is hard to tempt me beyond the loving parameters of the cacao bean but Fluff Bake Bar can do it. Every damn sugar molecule in their baked good is perfectly placed, vanilla and cream are having a Cleopatra and Anthony (OK. I am a history buff, too)-like love affair in her creations, and butter wraps all of it in a gooey, loving, happy embrace. If you haven't been here, go. If you are there right now, buy everything you can without wrecking your credit. Give any extras you might have to someone who needs a smile. Times are hard and we could all use a little love. This is my third time trying Fluff and I really want to like this place but I've had not so great experiences each time. Stale cookie once and bad service another time. Decided to give it another shot today and tried two things. The s'mores bar was good. The lemon pound cake was raw inside. I cut the cake in half to share with my boyfriend and said ooh there's lemon curd inside, took a big bite and it was raw dough. This is not acceptable and I will not return. My reply to Fluff: Thank you for the reply. I was already 40 minutes away at home by the time I cut into the cake. But no harm done. I'm inclined to believe the other Yelp reviews that give you a low rating due to rudeness. read more

Y'all. I think I've found heaven today. I'm in Houston visiting a friend for the weekend and I'm a HUGE fan of cakes and cookies (and anything sweet, really...) and recently have been in a massive cake phase. I looked on Yelp for some options and flipped through several establishments' menus before settling on Fluff because a) it was close by and b) it had intriguing things on the menu. It's a cute little shop on Gray with little to no parking out front other than a few metered spots, so my friend put her blinkers on and I ran in and grabbed a couple things. The shop is on the smaller side, but has plenty of seating on the left side should you ever choose to dine in. The lady behind the counter was friendly and also helpful in helping me make a decision. I decided on a cookie and a cup cake (literally a cake in a cup, how cute). The cookie choice was a no brainer - my favorite cookies of all time are sugar cookies and I have a strong, strong liking for anything that says "birthday cake" - basically anything birthday cake flavored, especially ice cream. So, when I caught sight of the Unicorn Bait cookie (sugar cookie + birthday cake crumb + sprinkes) I knew I'd come to the right place. This was literally everything I've ever wanted in a cookie. It was crispy, it was soft, it was sweet, and it was salty - my favorite combination. It reminded me of the birthday cake and the funfetti cookie at Momofuku Milk Bar back in NYC, but even better. Could it be my favorite cookie ever? Quite possibly. I chose the veruca salt cup cake since I've been in a chocolate cake phase and I love salted caramel frosting... so this seemed like an obvious choice. It was rich, but not too rich, sweet, of course but not cavities sweet, and was the perfect amount of sweet and salty. The devil's food cake was really moist and the frosting was outstanding. Zero complaints. The pretzel and chocolate pearls added a nice crunchy texture to the cake as well. I literally might have to go home and order a whole one if they ship. Yesterday I took a group of young people to Fluff to celebrate the end of the semester. For some, they had been there before but it was a brand new experience for one of them. We came in and were somewhat greeted by the staff. One of the ladies in there is always nice and receptive to discussing the different baked goods, even when it seems like she has a lot to do. I appreciate how she handled the sudden influx. The other was very standoffish and appeared to not want to be there. She was very short with these young people and started to try and rush their orders. I don't know if it was just a bad day for her but she made these university students feel as if they didn't belong. At one point another worker came in for her shift and the level of welcoming plummeted. How is it possible that the entire mood just shifts? The 3 stars is for the goods-which are always amazing- but I had to take two because that's not how you run a business, especially one so close to at least six universities and colleges. Appearances aren't everything and some of the most loyal customers could not look how expected. There is a strong possibilty that we won't be back nor recommend Fluff for any future events. read more

I'm one of those reviewers who are more influenced by service than food. If you're looking for good customer service go to Dessert Gallery cause you ain't gonna find it here. We walked in and by it being our first time we were like kids in a candy store. There was one girl standing at the register and instead of engaging us she just stared as we looked in the refrigerated case. Never pointing out there were more dessert behind the glass along the wall or asking if she could help. Once I decided on a treat I approached her to pay and still was never greeted. The only words I believe she spoke was my total. The shop itself is small and cramped with most seating outside. Yeah enjoy that in the Houston summer. The treats remind me of Japanese desserts. My fav is usually the fluffernutter but was pleasantly surprised by the very berry corn cookie. It's mixed with the very berry captain crunch cereal so gives you kind of a nostalgic feel while eating it. read more

Its unfortunate that I have to give this place such a low review. But I also believe in good customer service in addition to good food and the customer service skills were severely lacking. Bestie and I visited last night because we wanted dessert and this place was close to the hotel. The reviews were stellar and the pictures looked phenomenal. Upon walking in, no one spoke to us despite us speaking several times. We were the only ones in the store and there were two workers present. One worker walked off and the other came from the back to help. While looking at the display cases, we were trying to decide what we wanted but we began to feel rush. The worker gave off a strong vibe of not wanting to be bothered. Like the expectation of her to do her job was too much. We had a couple questions and she was just short and not engaging. I don't expect rainbows and cotton candy when I go to places but politeness goes far. We were made to feel very uncomfortable and not welcomed. At this point, I started to leave but after paying for a Lyft to get there, I didn't want it to be a wasted trip. The two stars are for the food only. I bought two chocolate chip cookies, s'mores dessert and I think a salted caramel treat but can't be sure of the name. Yum! I came in to Fluff Bake Bar on a Friday at lunch time and there was only one other person in there. The lady behind the counter was super nice and helpful. I ordered one of almost every cookie so that people at my work could have some and they were delicious! The outside was crunchy and the inside was nice and soft, which is exactly what I want in a cookie. Tip on parking: there's a parking garage behind the shop that is free for up to 90 minutes. Park there if you can't find parking out front. Just make sure you go to the kiosk and get a ticket to put on the dashboard of your car. It's probably easier to get in and out of than the parallel parking anyway. read more

This place is run by the queen of delicious goodness. The staff is exceptional because the owner cares about her customers and hires people who are equally as passionate about baked goods as I am about eating them. I love this place so much I even asked if the company would deliver to my residence. Now, typically they wouldn't package their mouth watering cookies and deliver them via fedex to my location all the way across the country BUT THEY DID!!! This place is seriously delicious. We ordered several cookies (Snickerdoodle, couch potato, very berry corn cookie) and coffee. There is a small, yet cute, seating area out front that we took advantage of. I will definitely eat it again. So, why only 3 stars??? CUSTOMER SERVICE. We visited about an hour before closing. The kitchen crew was busy doing their thing (closing duties, filling baking sheets for the upcoming busy day, etc.). Someone did come up from the back to take care of us. Waiting on us was a chore. I understand being busy and ready to go home, but at the very least, they could have been pleasant. I will go back as the treats were good enough. Becky is so great with sweets that they call her the "sugar fairy" in most kitchens! We don't live in Houston, but we frequently visit family there and always make sure to swing by. In short, I purchased an obscene amount of pastries for one person...but that's how I roll. Luckily, I was able to cram the remaining 3/4 of my star crossed lover (rice krispie topped with caramel and enrobed in chocolate) into a ziplock bag and into my carry-on and TSA didn't try to confiscate it. My Smorkie cookie was delish! I am a big s'more fan and happily tried their adaptation of the s'more in a cookie format. And for my final selection--a Booty call brownie because, well the name, obvi. WOW AMAZING BAKERY!!!! I was always curious about this place when I hang out around midtown but never had a chance to drop in until Thanksgiving week. I got the banana bread ($4.25) with whipped white chocolate and it was worth every calorie I could afford. The banana bread was so moist even though it wasn't freshly made that day. The whipped white chocolate was extraordinary and was extremely unique as a topping. But beware this was baked due to the Thanksgiving festivity so it might not be there anymore. (10/10) Their homemade cookies ($1.95) are scrumptious and so addicting. I should be on a diet but always cave in for sweet goodies. I recommend the snickerdoodle cookies and the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Although, I strongly believe all of their cookies would taste equally delicious. I went to Fluff Bake Bar for the very first time in December and I can't believe I've walked past it so many times. A friend of mine really hyped it up and I must say, I was not disappointed. We got in right before they closed which I felt really bad about, but they were super friendly and accommodating anyway. I was told that the owner of this shop studied bakery in France and sure enough you can find her credentials on the back wall. I had a double chocolate cookie and a peanut butter cookie with chocolate which was by far my favorite. The cookies are very fluffy, but still moist and chewy and they have a nice little menu of drinks as well. I will definitely be back when my sweet tooth hits which is pretty much always. :) Btw, there is seating in the back inside as well as a courtyard outside when the weather breaks again. read more

I discovered this place by chance. A customer brought a cake into MY restaurant for their birthday and was gifted an extra piece by the host of the party. Cookies, brownies, cakes, oh my! I absolutely love this place. It's the cutest little dessert spot with a good variety of treats. I love their cup cakes. I love how cutely they are packaged. I've had the Veruca Salt and Black Velvet. Personally, I prefer vanilla cakes, but these ones were oh so good. The Veruca Salt was a combination of chocolately, salty, and creamy goodness. It was rich, but not too overwhelming. The Black Velvet was amazing. Its like an updated twist on the classic red velvet. Not their cookies. I think my favorite dessert has to be cookies and for me, a good cookie is one that is a little crispy on the edges and soft and gooey in the middle. Well, Fluff's cookies does just that. I've tried a few of their cookies and nothing has disappointed me yet. Their classic chocolate chip is amazing. Their couch potato is delicious. Just imagine everything but the kitchen sink wrapped up in a cookie. Their brownies are also really good. Try the s'mores car. Super good and fudgy. Lastly, I've only tried one of their tarts and I thought it was amazing. The lemon tart here is probably one of the best I've had. Slightly tangy yet sweet and custardy wrapped in a sweet crust. It is small, quiet and unassuming - at least first thing in the morning. I've been wanting to try anything Rebecca Mason created ever since I first saw her on Top Chef - Just Desserts. I think it's cool that they have a windowed working area so if I was so inclined, I could sit and watch them create sugary goodness. I was the only customer and I got the Veruca Salt. It is so good. Perfect balance of sweet and salty. Loved how the pretzels layered within were still crunchy. Also bought some goodies to go so I'll update my review after I've tried them. There was one girl working and she was very attentive and friendly. Of note, Rebecca Mason (the Sugar Hooker, herself!) came in as I was eating my treat. She didn't look in my direction, probably too filled with early morning hatred. I was not offended in the least. If these things are baked with hate, may her frown live on forever!! Added: oh my gosh, I've taken at least a bite from all these things today and there is nothing here that isn't delicious. The best, however, is the couch potato cookie. They have a lot of really interesting and unique flavors, especially when it comes to their cookie choices. I just made a quick stop and got suckered into buying 5 cookies because I couldn't decide what flavor to get! I think the cookies are absolutely amazing, especially when warmed up. I'm not sure how often they rotate their flavors, but definitely try their butterfinger based cookie and the nutter butter based cookie sandwich. Those were soooo good, even when cold. They don't have a lot of inside seating but I imagine given the area that most customers pick up their orders or take them to go. I came here before work for some sweets to indulge in and share. It was about 5:30 ish and they didn't have a huge selection. Most items were sold which was pretty disappointing but ...the early bird does indeed get the worm. I decided to go with 2 chocolate chip cookies and 2 gingersnaps. They had other cookies available but those looked fresh and promising. The chocolate chip cookies were good. I shared them with my coworkers( they are pretty big!) and they enjoyed them. I ate 1 ginger snap by myself and O.M.G. was it good. Soft, chewy, moist with bits of real ginger! Tasted like molasses and love!!! I definitely would go back just for them. As a matter of fact, I will because they were the favorite!
