Bread was stale, crawfish had no flavor and a lack of good sauce made for a disappointing poboy. Lastl, the margarita was just "ok". Not good, but could be worse. I really loved this place. We walked there from our hotel. I can eat almost everything on the menu. I liked the laid-back vibe and the massive collection of Billy the Big Mouth Bass on the walls. The service staff was so friendly and helpful. They give you a lot of food. I liked how the hush puppies were bite-size. I really like this location! It is a little hidden gem. The lake as a back drop gives it a very authentic feel. I love to feed the fish and turtles. The Mango Margarita was big and tasty. The crawfish was awful it tasted like dirty water (I have no idea what dirty water taste like but if I did it was the crawfish)- the catfish was good but NOT worth $10, the play was small 4/10 . I also had the lobster stew, which was somewhat like a lobster chowder IMO. Definitely not like lobster bisque. Thin cream base but very light and delicious. It's a no frills type of place but has a certain old school charm. Seating inside is surrounded by years of pictures and oddities, outside patio is covered and spartan but works nicely. Close and convenient to the hotel we were staying at. We went on Wednesday evening and the place was packed (usually sign of a good place) but later we found out it was all you can eat catfish night. I ordered a shrimp baskets (jumbo) with fries and a bowl of gumbo. The shrimp were large size and butterfly cut (to make them look bigger). The cornmeal breading was crispy and adhere nicely to the shrimp, but had no flavor. I had to dip them into cocktail sauce (not the best flavor it tasted like ketchup with horse radish in it) to flavor them. There was a wide selection of sauces in every table ( a sign of the motto; we cook with no flavor, you add everything at your end). The shoestring fries were crispy but again no flavor at all. The gumbo was dark and spicy, not spicy nice but bitter spicy ( I will have to put this one at the bottom of my nationwide gumbo list). It had okra and shrimp and some other "stuff" you could not discern by flavor or structure. The place was clean and the service was fast. They sell alcoholic beverages, tea and fountain sodas. A nautical decoration reminds you of the coast, the food will not. read more

I had the seafood gumbo and the mud bug by the pound. The mud bugs (aka crawfish) came in a circular tray with a half cob of corn. The seasoning on the mudbugs was really good. It was a cajun rub with spicy and some herby flavor. I made a lemon, salt, and pepper dip on the side to dip the crawfish in. If I had some butter and garlic on the crawfish I think it would have been perfect. The seafood gumbo was really good as well. I've never had seafood gumbo before so I think most of thick sauce was a gravy type of sauce? And it came with various seafoods with mostly shrimp. I got the tip from dishtips.com that they have the best catfish in Ft. Worth. Lies! Ordered 2 filet catfish basket. Service was very fast. I figured out why. When you are serving one catfish filet and cutting it in half serving it as two filets it only takes a few minutes to fry it. It was flavorless. Had to use salt, pepper, tartar sauce (which I never use) Tabasco and chalula to make it work. Fries looked like bagged frozen McDonald fries...no seasoning Hushpuppies were good, they just happened to be rolled so small and tight I wonder if they were frozen too. I ordered the key lime pie. Dear Glorious Food Deities, Please forgive my ignorance of Flying Fish's epic eats. I am but a simple man, I will repent, I swear! Have pity! Ok now that my grovelling is done, I am still perplexed as to how I managed to avoid this place for so long. Not to mention, there just aren't that many go-to places for fish in Fort Worth. But, at the end of last year, I finally made it to Flying Fish and now it is one of my favorite places to go. Flying Fish is one of those places where you get seriously stressed out when trying to order because everything on their menu looks so damned good. Several types of fish, both freshwater and saltwater (I love the snapper) served several types of ways (grilled, blackened, fried), plus other things such as fried shrimp, an assortment of po'boys, jambalaya, oysters, and plenty others. So it isn't just the simple fried-food-shack that I ignorantly thought it to be. If you like things that live in the sea, then you will like Flying Fish, plain and simple. As mentioned earlier, my favorite thing to order is grilled Red Snapper, just reminds me of all the nice trips down to the coast. Modestly priced at 10 bucks too. Which brings me to the next point, you can get your saltwater fish fix in without breaking the bank, unlike at other restaurants such as Pappadeux, Blu Crab, or Eddie V's. But let's get to the best thing they have and something that is a requirement for any legit fish shack: the Hush Puppies. Mother of god, they are good. On our trip this past weekend, I wasn't all too hungry, so I ordered a cup of Seafood Gumbo and a side of Hush Puppies which not only filled me up, I had to share the rest with the table. All in all, it is now one of my favorite places to go, where merely its mention will cause my ears to perk up. The only downside is that yes, the parking is problematic. My advice is just take extra time or go outside the normal dinner rush hours. Either way, it is worth the wait. read more

Every night when I drive home from work, I have to wait at a stoplight riiiight next to this place. It looks like it's open late (later, a sign on the door later assured me that it is open everyday, 11a-10p) and the neon red lights look fun. I sigh at the stoplight longingly. The boy at home says he's never had catfish before (WTFFFFF) nor fried oysters (double WTFFFF) and resists. This had been going on for several months now. Since the weather has cooled down, I drove home with the windows down and have the intoxicating smell of deep fried fish in corn batter waft in. I can't take this anymore. I go home and proclaim "We are going for lunch tomorrow!" He didn't stand a chance. No effort was made to resist. The parking lot was a bit tight, but there's waaay worse (like the Berry Street Fuzzy's. That's some bullshit parking if I've ever seen it.) I found a spot easily at noon on a Monday, no prob. The place was pretty big inside too! And, as other users can attest, there's all sorts of crazy crap on the walls. I stood in line behind a dude in a cowboy hat and ordered from a bunch of guys barking Spanish at each other. They gave me a card (buy eight meals, get one free) and one of those light up buzzer things that let you know when your food is ready. That's cool, I was going to go outside anyways, watch the birds tear up cracker packets. We had the surf 'n turf (and by "surf", they mean catfish, and by "turf", they meant chicken strip). Five bucks and some change each. Came with fries, four sides for dippin' (ketchup, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and that oily sauce for fish.... I forget what it's called. Sorries!) The catfish was great, tender, flaky, battered in corn meal. The chicken was good, too. Hushpuppies were sweet. Wished I got a couple more. Tons of condiments on the table to spice things up. Frank was busy poisoning his food with Tabasco sauce; I thought it was all good solo. TIP: Val-Pak! There's always a BOGO coupon in there!! We got a cobbler in an iced goblet, a la mode. Delicious. Last nights meal was a zero. It was Togo only so we ate in our car. The grilled trout almondine had exactly zero seasoning on the fish. Not salt or pepper even. The almonds were rubbery. The green beans were barley seasoned/ok. The new potatoes were soft but again - zero seasoning. My husband got red snapper and the same thing- not even salt. Both fish were over cooked and dry. We ate about 3 bites a piece and threw everything away. We have liked the fried shrimp in the past and we like that they have many side options especially vegetables. Why does no one have vegetables that aren't fried? The red beans and rice used to have a delicious tomato topping but they got rid of that years ago. Truthfully we gave up on this place awhile back but about once a year we think, maybe one more try. The prices are very reasonable but only if the food is edible. read more

Oysters were Sub-par and when we asked for appetizer plates they were coated with mariner sauce on the bottom of them. My wife went to get clean ones and the whole stack of them were filthy with red sauce. I can't believe this place is rated higher than Pappadeaux's. I had the Grilled Red Snapper with Rice and it was good. This is the second time I had Oysters here and I guess I am spoiled on how fresh and great Pappadeaux's are and I expect at least that Quality at any Seafood place. Great, laid back, patio and casual indoor seating. Even though I'm 8ish hours from the nearest ocean I almost felt like I was inches away enjoying fresh seafood. The menu is extensive and the price is right. Okay selection of beer ranging from Shiner to bud light to Stella. If you're a beer snob like me, it's disappointing but I can't expect everyone to have my high standards in the beer department. It's a neat place but I really didn't enjoy the food much. The shrimp salad was overpriced and the shrimp was dry. I didn't care for the vinaigrette dressing either. The Shrimp Cocktail was ok, nothing great. The kids seemed to enjoy their chicken tenders and fries just fine. My wife didn't care for her meal and ate very little of it. Comparing it to Fish Shack in Plano or Aw Shucks in Dallas the Flying Fish just isn't as good. I've been trying to find a good local place for seafood every since I moved to Fort Worth for school. This is by far the best one I have found. I have mostly taken out food but all of the shellfish is very fresh and good. They have good deals. I wish everything was a little more seasoned, but that's my preference.
