After visiting the Clinton Library, we were given the suggestion to visit the Flying Fish. After reviewing the menu on the website, we decide to try this seafood restaurant. There was something for all of us. We ordered the alligator bites, grilled chicken with roasted veggies and beans on rice (best ever), fish tacos, and chicken basket, and a side of fried okra. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING! It was so good, we went back the next night and ordered the chicken poboy, 1lb steamed hot shrimp, fried shrimp with green beans, and Mexican shrimp cocktail. Located at the River Walk portion of downtown Little Rock the Flying Fish is not fancy nor is it like a chain restaurant...it most definitely has its own look and feel. There's grilled vegetables for vegetarians and hamburgers and chicken for those who don't eat fish and salads and a nice array of grilled platters for those who are seeking to eat healthy! I had the grilled whole fish snapper platter with a bowl of gumbo. The snapper was delicious. It was topped with a bell pepper stew. The grilled vegetable were very crisp yet flavorful. I took my daughter there for lunch and to spend the day together walking around the riverfront. I visited here in '07 and it was just as delicious! I had the fried oysters and they were amazing. I couldn't understand though why I kept biting shell! It turned out that what I was crunching on were 7 pearls. I took them to my jeweler and he's going to put together a Panda ring using the pearls. I long for the Flying Fish of about 7 years ago! Yet another data point for the flying fish slipping into mediocrity I'm sad to report... Not sure of the cause, lack of concern creating poor quality, or terribly low expectations from its suppliers continue to create memorably unmemorable meals here. Group of 2 for dinner- 1 dozen oysters, two pounds of shrimp, bowl crawfish gumbo, and a friend catfish and shrimp basket. Always ask what looks good- this time I was given BS feedback about oysters.... They were dried out like they had been shucked for awhile - not cool! Gumbo was ok, but way to heavy on the flour--- pasty. Boiled shrimp were a serious disappointment - falling apart to the point of being almost uncleanable... A sure sign of lack of freshness and or freezer burn. Fried. Plate was fair to good... Catfish filets were smallish and thin. Shrimp had same problem. When the hush puppies are the standout in the table you know there is a problem. All of the above tells me thy are cutting costs by accepting or asking for lower quality from their purveyors- a sure sign that they think we don't care and obviously we don't because they place is consistently full of people confusing quantity and quality. I'll keep checking in to see if this turns the corner back toward quality- I so hope it does! Can really be hit or miss! Ask what looks good before you order! Sadly, the flying fish can have very low standards... I always ask what looks good, or will ask about the quality of what I'm ordering. I asked about the oysters and was told they did not look good ... Getting a suggestion of the fried catfish which I appreciated. However I noticed many ordering the oysters, leaving many uneaten on their trays because even from a distance they looked dried out and lifeless... I can only imagine how they tasted! Sadly they remained available and people ordered them. A restaurant run with pride would not accept or offer item that do not meet a good and fresh quality level. Very disappointing behavior and standards from otherwise great people. I had the whole snapper Veracruz... Fish was not fresh, freezer burned for sure! The Veracruz aspect of the dish was weak!
