I was here on Christmas Eve with my girlfriend. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this place blew my mind away. We started dinner off with an order of the truffle parm fries. Best. Fries. Period. These fries were well-seasoned and each bite was savored with a tantalizing crunch. Do you ever dream about French Fries with the perfect crunch? This is where the dream becomes reality. For the main entree, I ordered the churrasco (chef's meat special du jour), which turned out to be...drum roll please...a flat...iron...steak. The flat iron steak is surreal. Each bite melted in my mouth similar to how the steak melted the butter upon first touch. A part of me died inside when I asked my girlfriend to switch plates with me, wanting the steak all to myself. A steak this good should not be shared!!! Now on to my trade/switch for the girlfriend's flatbread. It packed a lot of flavor, not so in your face, but not delicate either. I thought the flat bread was spot on, especially the toppings. Can't go wrong with salami and prosciutto on bread. It was really good, I mean that, but it's not a steak. BEEF, it's what's for dinner! I have been here over ten times. That is 50 stars as far as I am concerned. I have never been close to this restaurant not exceeding my expectations. From Burgers to Steak, Shrimp to Salmon. Mac n Cheese to Salad. Just perfection. Then you are waited on by waiters who actually care, with knowledge about what they are selling. We were passing through Oceanside on a mission to do some gambling and used Yelp to find a restaurant. This place had awesome reviews, so we decided to give it a try. I was a bit skeptical, because the last time I was in this part of Oceanside it was super ghetto. So boy were we surprised when we walked in to find and AMAZING restaurant in the back alley of a not-so-great part of Oceanside. Win. We called ahead, which was a great idea. The place was packed to the brim at 7:30pm on a Monday night. As other reviewers have noted, the service is a bit slow. But we knew that going in and we were without our kids, so we weren't in a huge hurry. Besides, this kind of food perfection takes time! We started off with the bacon mac n cheese. I could have stopped there and died happy. It was so good. I ordered the ribs which were delicious. My husband ordered the steak (this is a "market price" item that depends on what cut of meat they are serving), which was a porter house. He said it was the best steak he's had at a restaurant, ever. His steak came with smashed potatoes, that I stole off his plate everytime he got distracted. They were that good. I'm not sure how we did it, but we ordered dessert too. My husband went for the bananas foster and didn't speak for 5 minutes straight because he was too busy inhaling them. I assume they were good, but I couldn't get a fork in edgewise. I ordered the Chocolate Pot de Creme, which was the BEST dessert ever. It was like the perfect pairing of fries and a milkshake, but not that. Salt + Cream + Chocolate = Perfection. I'm not sure why you are still reading this review and not at the Flying Pig already. We live over an hour away and this place will make it on our regular rotation of favorite eating places ever. Best brazed short ribs I have ever had, the husband took the advice of his buddies and had the pork chop, and we have returned since then because we had to order the same thing again. I've seen a lot of different people in a lot of different places, trying to do food as good as they possibly can--I've never seen anyone actually pull it off, until Roddy and the crew at the Pig showed me the light. (* Side-note: they get bonus points for being walking distance). Why harp on specifics when the plain truth is all-inclusive: everything is done properly. Nothing is below ideal. And in the rare event that something ain't picturesque, there are smart, accommodating, effective staff standing by to right the wrongs, infrequent as they are. Long story short: if the Flying Pig were a band, I'd follow them around on tour. If it were a toothpaste, 5/5 Whits would recommend it. If it were an ocean liner, I'd take a 6-month cruise on it. This is as good as it gets folks. The thick huge honking pork chops are a must, best I've had ever...not dry at all super moist and juicy. My mate's steak was also awesome, how can you you complain I have no idea. What exactly are people expecting here? the prices here are about the same as Out Back, except the food to me is every bit as good as the best I've in SD like Ruth Chris, Pamplemousse, World Famous, etc Yes the place is quaint and rather confined but you can't your cake and eat it too. Pros: Seriously...the best burger I've ever had and I have been to several high end place burger places that supposedly specialize in burgers and it's all they serve. Interestingly, this burger is not super fancy. BEST BUN, flavorful sauce, great patty, excellent blue cheese. Also, outstanding bacon macaroni and cheese. Really among the top five I've ever eaten. Lastly, the ambience, the service, and the owner were phenomenal! Cons: Not a fan of the fries. Shoestring fries that are very crispy and I couldn't taste the vinegar at all. Second, the cream dessert was chocolate and it was on the bitter side as opposed to sweet. I like chocolate desserts that are on the sweeter side. I think had it been a different flavor I would've liked it. The texture was great. Bottom line: Definitely give this place a try. You WILL find something here to absolutely LOVE! Yelp put me onto Flying Pig. I like the ambiance. It's funky. It's rough, not smooth and polished. Makes me think this place is owned by a person, not a corporation who hires designers. They've got a great selection of beers on tap (this is San Diego County, after all, craft brew capital of the country). I arrived shortly after it opened for dinner service. I started with an appetizer off the happy hour menu. Very disappointed. The Mac N Cheese was like a mediocre fondue poured over elbow macaroni. Not enough flavor, mostly a rich blandness. Not extremely bland, just a too bland. A fondue where you have no clue which cheeses they're using. The mac n cheese had bacon, but I couldn't sense any smokiness at all. The entrée' redeemed. With a name like Flying Pig, I wanted pork. I got the pork chop. It was served on some grain, not sure what. Barley? This was the best chop I've ever had that wasn't smoked. Just a great piece of meat. My tastes buds, but not my stomach, wanted to order another. It was divine. Why 4 stars, why not 5? The pork chop was a 5 star pork chop - "as good as it gets". And I love funky building and décor, but in a few places, like the very well worn menu covers, it feels worn instead of comfortable. Also, the mac n cheese was not "as good as it gets". Great atmosphere, pretty good food, very SLOW service. I wanted to love this place, and while I was a little disappointed, I will give it another go in a few weeks. We waited forever to order, and even longer to get our food. Getting water was not easy. I had the mussels and beet salad, the mussels were a bit too salty and the salad was a little bland. I'm so in love with this place. The food is amazing, the service is the best I've ever had, and the environment is endlessly entertaining! Every year I go to the Chart House in Cardiff for my birthday and order a steak that's at least $50. The steaks at the flying pig are half the price and WAAAAAAAY better. I live just around the corner from The Flying Pig and I am so excited this restaurant is so close....Its the kind of place I would drive 45 minutes away just for dinner if I had to. Every time I drive by they are busy and I've seen a line out the door multiple times, so you know its good. Keep up the good work guys! read more

Came here because of all the reviews and they weren't wrong! There was a 30minute wait and it was well worth it. We had truffle fries which were amazing followed by the Pork Burger and the Pork Chop... Atmosphere was perfect, Ashley our waitress was on point with recommendations from beer, main course and desert. Rarely do I feel out of my league with an observation about a restaurant. This establishment however, sets a very high bar and is worthy of 5 stars from me. For starters, the food is local, always changing (depending on the chef's direction) and fantastic. The presentation is kitschy and cool but a little garish. They use various and sundry plates, silverware, and even menus (from old 78 record covers) which add to the appeal but can be a bit distracting. For the price, I would say it is more than fair (my pork chops with cauliflower was $20, and it was worth every penny)... The reason I gave this 5 stars was for every bit of the reasons above and that this place has an atmosphere that breathes change for a neighborhood. SALT LICK AHEAD From the outside it looked unapproachable but walk in and you're pleasantly surprised! The decor and idea is cute. A flying pig head on the wall, record covers as the menu and a great staff who all treat you like you're their buddy =) It gets packed here but the bar serves food too so we sat there. The food is good but I can't give them any more than a 3.5 for these two reasons: everything is drenched in SALT and their famous pork burger got me super sick. Chicken and dumpling: the dumplings were lightly fried and delicious but the chicken was crazy salty. It's too bad because it was cooked to perfection, they broiled it crispy and it was moist inside. But the sodium level was extreme. We had to return it. Collards and bacon: creamy, lots of bacon pieces and .... salty. It was tasty but just too salty for my taste. Pork burger: pretzel bun was soft and delicious, the fried egg on there was MONEY but the pork patty was what killed it. Besides it being too salty on the exterior it was cooked MEDIUM (waiter recommendation) and it messed up my stomach all night. I did enjoy the truffle fries, beet and burrata salad and the pork burger (but be warned it's salty). I'll come back again and try out another dish. Just now saw that I never finished this review! Lol No time like the preset I guess. I first had dinner at this little hidden gem back in November 2015 on a first date. It was great! (the food not the date) My ordered was the Braised all natural duroc Pork Belly. I came with corn puree, thyme roasted shallots, pea tendril, brined baby shiitake mushroom, soy lemon grass glaze and it was simply delicious. The pork belly was really rather fatty and to be fair my waiter did warn me of the meat to fat ratio but I still loved it. (Fatty cheat meal indeed!!!!) My dates meal was the burger with a farm fresh fried egg on top...looked amazing and he devoured it in good time so I assume it was good. The staff were very attentive but not overly where it could be a possible bother. Nice array of beers on tap and a nice Zinfandel (which I order) that paired with my meal. The decor is funky cool with menus made from old vinyl record covers and the walls had similar musical or artsy displays. The only complaint was that the seating was rather uncomfortable and hard to sit on for a long period. The lighting was low and perfect for dinner dates. All in all this place was yummy and I'd go back again if given the chance. read more

I almost hesitated writing this review, as I fear it might mean more people would flock to this establishment making my wait in line to be seated that much longer! What an AWESOME place. A definite hole in the wall, it's off the main drag and you're not going to just stumble across it, you have to know where you're going to get there. We took another couple with us for what was supposed to be our first time, got there @ 5:30pm (safe, right? before the "dinner crowd", right?), saw a slew of people outside the entrance and discovered there was a one-hour wait to get in. We couldn't wait, so we went somewhere else. Of course, stuck in our mind was if a place has a one-hour wait at 5:30pm, SOMETHING must be good about that place. So the following week, we entered @ 4:30pm (when the bar opens, you can't get food until 5pm, but they'll seat you anyway). First off - the decor is very rustic and homey, definitely a "pub" atmosphere. Casual dress, since it's the beach, shorts and sandals are not uncommon. Second - the service. Absolutely wonderful and friendly - and we noticed it was a team effort. Jessica was our server, and her charm and warmth was the best we've experienced anywhere - but all through the course of our experience, just about every server "touched" our table. Someone else brought our food, someone else filled our water glasses, and no less than 3 of the team came to our table to ask how everything was, and if our meals were prepared to our liking. The food - incredible. Now we only tried 2 items (and since we'll now be returning, we hope to try everything on the menu at some point). We had the short ribs (no need to use a knife, these suckers just melted onto your fork) and the steak du jour (which was the rib eye). Cooked perfectly, and was probably the best meal we've had out in quite a while). We saw around us others diving into bacon mac 'n cheese, various pork burgers, pork chops, etc., so we can't wait to return to try those. In passing, Jessica picked up that it was my wife's birthday (actually we were a couple of days early from it, just celebrating it on a weekend night), and she shows up with some of their vanilla gelato and brown sugar short bread crisp with a candle. I live in Oceanside. I love flying pig. Like all other successful places, they are going to be packed at 6pm and there will be a wait of up to an hour sometimes. And people are willing to wait that long because it's really good! They have a very wide selection of beers and a large amount are seasonal. They will not have that really good local beer you tried last time but they might have that new local beer you never heard of and it wasn't that great x) But that's not really their fault and I love when local businesses promote other local businesses' work. And if you don't want to take a risk, there are all the ones we already know about. Now to the food. Everything you order on the menu will be absolutely fantastic. I'm not even kidding. The burgers are juicy and tasty (and messy). The steaks are done to perfection. My favorite has got to be the pork belly. I took Parisian friends there. You know Parisians. They have a reputation. They complain a lot and if it's not food made in France, it's got to be bad. Not at flying pig though! Thanks to our Parisian friends, we have learned 2 things: 1) That pork belly is really really good 2) We eat better in Oceanside than in New York (They came from New York to visit us) Now based on the fact that they went only to flying pig in Oceanside I wouldn't hold 2) as a general rule but we know that's true for flying pig. --- The only minus: For those who know the place well, the menu doesn't change that much and there isn't much on it either. I've pretty much tried all the starters and entree at this point. We simply don't go there often now. There is a plat du jour but it's really hit and miss. To summarize: Go early: 5pm Avoid the plat du jour which is not on the menu. If it will be your only and last time at Flying pig, go for the pork belly. Get a side of truffle fries. You can not go wrong at the Flying Pig! This is probably my best find to date in Southern California. What looks like a off main street care repair shop from the outside is actually an incredibly well presented bar and restaurant interior with some of the highest quality pub grub I've ever tasted. From the simple and HUGE basket of truffle fries, to the more elaborate main dishes. This place really knows how to present great tasting food in a great environment. If I were younger I'd have given it five stars... but honestly... you can't hear yourself think :-) chicken & "dumplings" jidori airline chicken, chicken confit, polenta fritters, green beans, roasted carrot & turnip, sage brown butter... straight from the menu...and it was spectacular. But notice the dumplings are in Quotation marks... Just order it... you'll love it. There were four of us... every single meal was great. Kind of a jangy looking sports bar with excellent food, drinks, and service. I forget our waitress's name but she was the pretty one with the full sleeve. She was super sweet and gave us good recommendations. The burger I got was cooked perfectly and was tender. This place has such charisma and to serve this level of good food in Oceanside is unheard of! We have only been here once but the experience was fabulous! Anna is the bomb of a waitress, great attitude and spunky personality. Pork belly = delish! I won't give this place five stars yet because we need to return and try more stuff. Great beer and wine selections. Wife and I rode our bikes there and it got dark because of the wait but the owner (name?) came to our table and asked if we'd like to throw our bikes in his truck and he could drive us home! .. actually that just up'd the star factor to 5! We declined but he then asked if we wanted to lock them up in the shed he has out back because the neighborhood area is not a great place to leave your bikes, or children, locked up to a fence! I have been to Flying Pig several times. At first I really liked it. I felt like I had found a hidden gem in my hometown. Met a few friends there for dinner last night, and realized that I am over it. The menu is good, but the food is inconsistent. Take our appetizer last night, for example: We ordered the Goat Cheese Rosemary Confit with Toasted Sourdough. The bread wasn't toasted in any way. (It's not appetizing to eat roasted garlic and goat cheese on soft, cold bread.) And there was absolutely no rosemary in the dish. None. It seems like each time we decide to dine there, the they take less and less care with how they prepare and present their food. The atmosphere is fun, but the servers aren't. In fact, every server I have ever had, has been horrible. Takes forever for them to bring your drinks, and even longer to bring your food. And, your food is almost always served with an attitude. As our waitress was going over last night's specials, she repeatedly mispronounced Spätzle. It's not that I think this is a big deal. But, when I repeated it back to her, correctly, she looked at me and said, "Sorry...I'm not a foodie." No one had implied that she needed to be one. I was merely saying the word aloud. And, who said that 'I' was a foodie? Anyway, from the time she took our order, to the time our food was served, was over 40 minutes. Yes, we timed it. We were sitting there debating whether or not to leave. My friend had ordered the Spätzle with Fried Egg, but was served fish instead. Our waitress stood there for five minutes insisting that she hadn't made a mistake. Turns out, they were out of Spätzle, so my friend accepted the fish, free of charge. Nice save. I'd avoided this relatively new place in Oceanside, because it sounded too much of a bar and not enough of a restaurant. When some family members turned out to be staying just around he corner from it, we decided to give it a try. I'm SO glad we did. I'm bored of bars where you can't hear the person you're with because of loud music and conversation. Fine for a drink, but not for a meal. This place was the perfect balance. A dark, welcoming bar feel, but with great tables, friendly hipster-y (in a GOOD way) service - and outstanding food! I could relax, drink, eat, and carry on a conversation with a table of five. We had 1 server, then he said he was going home, which our new server said the same thing adding that they weren't that busy, even though the place was packed and they seemed to be having trouble getting us things in a timely manner and the first server stayed to finish out 1 of his tables. The restaurant has a rustic/rockish decor, with a bar on the left, and plenty of smaller tables throughout. I imagine you would have to wait quite a while on a Fri/Sat night, though. Their menu has some really interesting offerings. I wanted to the the Chicken and "dumplings" but instead went for the chuck burger, which was good but fell apart on me so I had to eat it with a knife and fork (hides face). I did spring for the truffle fries and truffle aioli, and they were good. Unpretentious, laid back. What Gastropubs strive to be like. I wanted to surprise my husband the beer aficionado with delicious brews and bites. I ordered the most incredible Cream ale while my husband ordered the guest beer on Nitro. So delicious and hit the spot. That was just the beer! Light fare is offered. But we opted for the Chuck Burger for him and the Pork Burger for me. We sat at the "community high top table" set with mismatched glasses and bright colored napkins. Our waitress walked up looking like Rosie the riveter and was super laid back, but extremely knowledgeable. The food showed up after a reasonable amount of time and looked gorgeous! I knew after the first bite this would be one for the record books! My husband said his Chuck burger was the best burger he had ever eaten! And I agree. My pork was pretty incredible too. I LOVE this place! Everything about it. Great food, awesome people, quirky atmosphere, reasonable prices. Our waiter was so wonderful (Yay Phill). He made tons of recommendations, brought us lots of beers to sample, and made sure we felt well taken care of. When I told him I was a vegetarian, he informed me that the chef would make a special vegetarian dish if I wanted. He said it would be a surprise but that the chef was very creative and would not disappoint. I was feeling adventurous so I let the chef work his magic. I was not disappointed. Homemade pasta, with a light truffle cream sauce, mushrooms, and caramelized shallots! It was sooooooooo good! I'm so glad Phill recommended the vegetarian surprise. :) The banana bread donuts were also amazing. They were warm and come with a fruit spread. I've been craving them every since we left. We made our first trip the the Flying Pig last night based on Yelp reviews. I have to admit I almost did not want to go in at first sight. It has a bit of "dive bar" vibe to it and I was leery about taking our 9 year old daughter in - the worry was for naught. The wait for a table was long but the hostess was attentive letting us know where we stood on the list. The only other down side was the noise level. Even standing outside waiting for a table was more pleasant when the shut the door to the restaurant just because it was extremely loud in there. Now the food - it was fantastic!!! The waitress was prompt enough to our table and had a set of lungs on her!! That was a good thing as she was able to tell us about the specials and be heard. I had the pork belly which was PERFECT. Rich and cooked perfectly with a great sear and tons of flavor....but really, can you mess up pork belly? The greens that were served with it were a bit under cooked making them slightly tough but the flavor was still spot on. My daughter had the mac n cheese with bacon that was flavorful but the pasta was overcooked. Four stars from me because the food was delightfully flavorful, the atmosphere was fun, but too loud, the service was attentive but not intrusive and the portions and prices were appropriate. I chose to leave the original review intact below so that everyone sees how far they've fallen. Two visits in a row, we've seen that the food quality is far from it was in the past. The pork belly was dry. The replacement meal was incorrect and when we pointed that out to the manager, he literally showed no remorse. He's been there 8 months. We've eaten there for 7ish years. He didn't seem to care. The owners have previously been successful. Hopefully they will figure this out. Either way, we are done. Prior review: PORK BELLY!!!! Excellent Beers!!! Great Prices!!!! Came here on a Friday night and this place was so packed !! The wait was about an hour.. I ordered an all natural chuck burger medium rare, and another in my party ordered it well done. The waitress mixed our burgers up and then noticed after we had already started eating. She apologized and gave us another order on the house, which included extra fries too!! Service was so excellent. I thought the burger was okay, maybe the same quality as Red Robin's but more expensive.. However, the service was so good!!
