I eat here whenever I can convince my husband to go... again! I would eat here weekly. They are part of the "slow food movement" which I totally appreciate. The service staff is friendly. The food is fantastic. I have never - seriously never - been disappointed. I love the atmosphere which is relaxed, funky and welcoming. The menu is seasonal which gives me a great reason to go back; I wouldn't want to miss something delicious. They offer a good selection of beer and wine - something for everyone. So I went and checked out The Flying Pig for dinner with a buddy last Friday night. Service staff was really friendly and knew a lot about their product. Took a little bit of time to get our drinks and dinner but its a good spot to hang out so I didn't mind. We got the southern pickles as an app and they were really good. Really tart, lots of flavor. Also the breading didn't overwhelm the pickles and was nice and crisp. I ordered a ginger mojito but alas they were out of mint-in their defense we arrived for dinner on a busy Friday night at like 9:30. Allowed me to try the mosco pig though and that was really good. Ordered the braised pork belly with collards and apples, came with spoon bread. This was my first pork belly experience and it was very tasty. A little bit more of the collards would have been great-they were some of the best greens I've had. I wasn't a huge spoon bread fan-would've liked it a little saltier and cheesier-probably just me, everyone else raves about it. My buddy got the burger and said it was maybe the best burger he's had. Looked awesome-he ordered med. rare and it was perfect. He said the combination of toppings (aged white cheddar, vinegary greens, grilled onion and a tempura avocado slice) came together for a great tasting burger. I tried his fries and they were all right-not my favorite cut of fry. We got some onion rings to and they were really good-the breading was again crisp and tasty and just the right amount. My friend ordered the sour beer and our server brought by a taste of it first. I tried it and it was good, not usually a big sour beer fan but this one was pretty subtle. Really cool decor. A lot of (good) personality went into putting this place together and it shows. Liked the photos and artwork. Reclaimed wood wall behind the bar is really cool. As previous reviewer said, music was good but could of been a bit louder, however with a lot of cement this has the potential of being too loud a room and I think the music was just right so that you don't have people all talking over it and each other. I have to say I think a lot of the 5 star reviews for this spot are because Oceansiders are starving for places that put in a real effort, aren't a chain, have the balls to be located in downtown and aren't completely pretentious. That said, those are all reasons to give a restaurant a great review. My visits were all during the Pig's more fledgling beginning and there were some rocky moments which could be expected with any new restaurant. The first was for my sister's birthday, for which we arrived on time for our 9:30 reservations and were nearly turned away by the owner because the kitchen was running so far behind on orders. Thankfully we had all night to hang out there and are remarkably patient people. We told him, give us a table and we'll be more than happy to wait. They made it very worth our while with a comped great bottle of red wine and the food was excellent that night. Subsequent times in have resulted in anything from amazing food (the risotto was DEADLY good) to the passable - wasn't going to keep me up at night or make me regret going. I've never received BAD service but I have had some extraordinarily long waits when it wasn't all that busy. Bottom line, it's a nice spot for a casual date night especially for the 20-35 set, the food is generally tasty without being too overwrought and there's always a good selection of wine and beer which is rapidly becoming a requirement in Southern California! I certainly hope the Flying Pig is here to stay. read more

I'll be honest, when I first arrived here the place looks ugly from the outside, it looks like a biker bar, it certainly could use a lick of paint, I opted for the Chicken and Dumplings, I have to say for the price it really was not that good, it was ok, but nothing to write home about, the staff on the other hand were very helpful and friendly. They sat me in a corner where it was very dark, I had problems reading the menu it was just too dark. I like the fact they use old 12 inch album covers for the menus, the ones I got though were held together with blue tape, not very professional, after I paid almost $30 for dinner and a drink I left there hungry. So I will start off saying that as I pulled up I was skeptical. The area was a little different than I am used to but I parked and my wife and I walked toward the door. We were greeted right away by one of the owners who was very welcoming and invited us right in. Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu to include to changing beer selections. Excellent service. The food...A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I had the best ribeye I have ever had a served over a bed of cheddar bacon grits. The beer was very good and they have a large selection of both beer and wines. Do not pass this place up, you will be missing out. I heard wonderful things, the menu looked perfect, I am a huge fan of Oceanside, I love a good gastropub and the ambiance was spot on but I was not dying over the food. To be fair, I only tried the appetizers from the happy hour menu. I will defiantly be back to try the entrees. I had the mussels, bacon mac and cheese, grilled bread with chimichurri and salt and vinegar fries. I love a large plump mussel, these were small and were not very robust. A place like this should knock mac and cheese out of the park. It was not bad but it ceratinly was not exceptional. The grilled bread was a yummy sour dough that was perfectly toasted but the chimichurri was an oil. I have only had Argentian chimichurri and I am used to it having fresh chopped parsley as a base. I have to start with this; I've been here multiple times, and never ordered off the menu. I've always gone with whatever the daily special is, and have never been disappointed. From the unassuming, understated outside facade, to the fantastic interior, this place is quality from every angle. Service-top notch. We have had one server several times, and he was great from explaining the eatery to us as first timers, to reciting the daily specials off the top of his head. Decor- Fun. Menus are on old record albums. It's a dark, unassuming bar-slash-upscale eatery that you can wear jeans, or dress up a bit and fit in. Go for dinner, go for a cocktail, go for the fun of it. Food-Amazing. The cocktails are great (Ginger Mojito is damn tasty), to the daily meat, pasta, and other specials. They take regular food and elevate it the right way. If you have dietary needs, speak up. They will make a 'vegan/vegetarian' meal and it's not lacking in anything. The desserts are really fun to share as well. What a fantastic restaurant! We went here tonight and their food was excellent as well as the service. The place was packed and the bartender actually made contact when he saw we were waiting behind the patrons sitting at the bar! That usually doesn't happen. I was also impressed when I observed the bartenders and barbacks inspecting the wine glasses for water spots. Who does that?!?! It shows how much they care! Very impressed. I had the chicken and fritters and my husband has the filet mignon. Both were excellent! I wish that I had room for dessert. Those donuts were calling my name. I wanted to love this place, I really did. I came here with my boyfriend the other day since he was visiting from Orange County and the beers were definitely very pricey. I ordered an Arnold Palmer, and it doesn't seem like they put any lemonade or anything, it tasted like straight lemon water with a tablespoon of iced tea. BLEH. The Parmesan truffle fries were great, I must admit. The fries were on the thinner side and slightly crispy. I ordered the short ribs and it was decent. It came on a bed of lentils with some corn. There wasn't enough sauce to dip the meat in and normally, I wouldn't mind because I love the taste of meat but parts of it were dry where it almost felt like I was eating beef jerky. I usually get my steaks rare. I must add, the short ribs at The Compass in Carlsbad were a lot better where you don't even need a knife. Overall, I probably won't be coming back on my own. If someone wants to go and everything else is closed, then fine. read more

What this place is doing in Oceanside, I haven't a clue! But it's AWESOME. Especially the location! I mean man, talk about a hole in the wall! I'm from Oceanside (I live in OC now) and it was so nice to see a place like this pop up in such a town. I'm not what you would label as a "foodie" AT ALL (I eat mainly to stay alive...) and I actually think I have no taste buds :( (seriously, I think they're defective sometimes...) but I can tell the difference between good food and not so good food, (aka pure sustenance). This place was definitely on the REALLY good side of the good food scale. Shrimp and grits = T.A.S.T.Y., sauteed brussel sprouts of some kind were super delish, and there is apparently a pork burger of some kind that my fiance labeled as "the best burger he has ever had." I will say though, the salt and vinegar fries kind of left me with something to be desired. I think I was expecting to get kicked in the mouth with salt and vinegar flavors, like I do with potato chips, but I didn't get that (could chalk that up to my faulty taste buds though...who knows) They were good though, don't get me wrong. I give the place and food 4 stars, but i have to tack on an extra star purely because of the locale - it's near and dear to my heart. Also, if you live in Oceanside and want to feel like you are in LA for a lil (aka, get all hipstery and trendy for a hot second), come visit this place. If I were local, this is the type of place I'd love to come back to time and time again. Great vibe, fun bartenders and a great selection of beer and some good food to boot. I stopped in after a long drive and needed some satiety. The menu had a lot of options and I had a hard time decided what to eat. I decided on the beet salad and flat bread, both from the appetizer side of the menu. Washing it down with a nice Green Flash was an easy choice. Why the three stars then? Well I have to admit as hungry as I was I was a bit turned off by my bar food. While the salad was good I though it could stand to use a little more dressing but still the taste was balanced with the beats and cheese and greens. The flat bread proved disappointing. The bread was nice and chewy and had a little bit of char which I like and was topped with prosciutto, roasted garlic and I think arugula, but where it totally flopped was the sauce. The red sauce really reminded me of ketchup which is great with fries but not as sauce on pizza or any type of pasta. Still, being hungry I scraped it off and reapplied the topping while happily washing it down with second round of beer. I don't think that the flat bread was indicative of all the food and I would gladly go back to try some other items because in reality a lot of the food looked really good. We decided to venture into The Flying Pig on a recommendation from a friend who is a culinary school grad. Upon walking in (2 adults and 3 kids - 11, 9 & 4) we were greeted and seated. Our menus were inside various 60's and 70's era album covers. Our waiter was informative and very personable. At our table we started with these fritters and bread that were both a hit with the kids and both of us adults. I had a Lost Abbey Pilzner that was very good as well. Our meal took awhile to come out, which wasn't a problem. With a packed house, it is expected. My wife had the braised pork belly. When the waiter asked how it tasted she replied saying, "I feel as if I am sitting on jesus' lap!" He took that as an utmost compliment. I had the pork burger with a fried egg along with sea salt and vinegar fries. This was a burger that went to the top of my list and I will be back to have it again. The kids all had the bacon mac and cheese. They loved it and we thought it was great as well. With a meal this good, you can't pass up dessert. We ordered the banana foster and the some creme thing. Both of these selections were nothing less than the dinner. The owner came over multiple times to check in on us and was very polite and sociable. That doesn't happen at most establishments. I was mislead by the yelp rating. I searched for the best salad in Oceanside and ended up with The Flying Pig. Here is a secret they only have two salsa on the menu, a tomato salad and a duck leg salad. Not quite what I had in mind. It is a charming place with a decent beer selection and very interesting food choices focused around duck, pork and beef. That being said the Salmon was a little undercooked, which is better than over cooked but still disappointing. Additionally the risotto was crunchy, I don't think Chef Ramsey would approve. read more

I will like to start with saying that the staff is really nice. And the wine selection also looks descent. But oh man the food is very plain, the flavor was not that great the veggies where ok. It is also on the pricier side. But the waiter did a nice job over selling us on the food which we do not mind. I will like to point something out very important to me, is that why would they have the baby seats inside the restroom. Is the same seats a small baby will sit probably touch the chair all over the chair that was in the restroom then put the hand in his/her mouth. Because that's what kids do. I don't have any kids of my own but if I did I for sure will not go to restaurant. But then again how good is there sanitation. But maybe I'll go for a drink but not food. I'm hoping the glass will be clean, and not washed in the restroom sink :p. read more

YUMMY!! You have to try this place. We were in town for just a few days, the food was so good the first time, we went back before leaving. The Sea Salt Fries are amazing along with the burger. The Bacon Mac and Cheese was a must had it both times, its big enough to share. My favorite was the pork chop I had it with mash potatoes but the special was over grits. The couple we were with had it with the grits and said it was the best meal they had all week. We also recommend the Spumoni and Pistachio Dessert?? Not sure the name but was so unique and wonderful! My only regret was that we did not also eat one of the steaks they looked so amazing and we didn't have time to go back a third time. We will be back to try a steak. OKAY now on to the service.... Located less than a block off the ocean in Oceanside is the quaint little building. It doesn't look like much on the outside and parking is difficult due to one thing...this place is popular! And for good reason... Inside? Decor is 80% recycled items. Flying pigs of all sorts buzz about the ceiling, walls, and furniture. The menus are old vinyl records...a perfect little bar is the center of attention. We sit and are promptly addressed by the bartender. She was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the food/restaurant/owners...everything. She beautifully described the menu all the way down to where they sourced their ingredients. It is nice to see another bartender like myself take pride in what they serve. Seeing as my husband and I were not very hungry (as we indulged in carne asada burritos prior to arriving here...damn you carne asada...) we only ordered a side and the cheese plate. The cheese plate came with 4 cheese and she even went as far to bring us a sample of the rosemary goat cheese with confit garlic. It also came with 4 different kinds of meat, from prosciutto to cappricolla, salami and house smoked ham. Pickled butternut squash, strawberries and grilled bread with honeycomb top it off...perfect...OH AND THE ALMONDS! So, freaking, good. The side? Probably my new obsession. Creamed collard greens with bacon...toothsome...green...fresh...absolutely perfect. From texture to the perfect amount of seasoning... We came in a Thursday night and it was really packed!!! The food here was pretty damn good and we were seated promptly for walk-ins. My first time here and I can say the entire experience was nice. The place definitely has character. They messed up one of my orders but I didn't notice because the food was so good. (They gave me a vegetarian version of what I ordered and gave me the right one 20 minutes later). I got the right order now, but for free! I would come back to go through the whole menu with time. The only small issue I had was the service. They could use an extra body. They're quite busy and it's so hard to call for someone (for drink re-fills or my bill) without yelling for them and they're running around like crazy. Besides that I love this place. One of life's perversities is how very often, especially in cuisine-conscious countries like Italy, France or China, a terrific restaurant will be housed in a dump--a dive--a pit-stop, a place you'd only take a boss you hate or a girl/boyfriend you want to get rid of. In Los Angeles, MAROUCH has long enjoyed a national reputation for being such a phenomenon. At nights the cramped parking lot of a seedy Santa Monica Boulevard mall east of the Hollywood Expressway fills with six-digit-priced cars. Inside the rather plain dining room home-cooked Lebanese dinners are so reasonably priced that Bel-Air folks say "the food is free." And so tasty that for years MAROUCH has earned a Ziggurat listing. The same freak occurrence happens here in North County. No one will ever describe downtown Oceanside as trendy; South Tremont Street is especially unscenic; the building at 626 is an ugly, noisy bar/café with wood banquettes offering prison-style comfort. But: at FLYING PIG, on the evening of 25 February, I was floored by a $25 three-course dinner as good as most any in LaLaLand. Have you ever had restaurant fries that aren't greasy and briny? Flying Pig's "Parmesan truffle fries" are served in oil-absorbent parchment "bowls." The Parmesan does make them salty, but these are golden, dry, crisp,and DEE-licious. When's the last time you had fresh-made pasta? I'm not crazy about creamy porcini sauce, but Flying Pig's pappardelle (pasta dishes change daily) would make an Italian's eyes tear with pleasure. The entree was excellent: glazed, and braised, "all-natural duroc pork shank" served in a bowl surrounded by roasted root vegetables, caraway onion, and fennel frond. I give my gushiest rave to the $12 duck salad. A voluptuous roasted confit duck leg, with watercress and arugula leaves that had the unmistakably weird, peppery flavor of garden arugula, nothing like fraudulent hothouse greens sold at supermarkets, or even at Trader Joe's or Sprouts. This salad is imaginatively accented with slices of pickled pear and date--a five-star salad in an Oceanside bar! With an insatiable sweet tooth, I finished with a HUGE chocolate caramel gelato sundae with salted pecans. Immorally sweet. All this for twenty-five bucks--or as Bel-Air-ites would say,"for free." Responsible for this extraordinary eatery is chef Mario Moser and proprietors Aaron, Josey and Roddy Browning. I don't recommend they make any change except put seat cushions in the banquettes and find some way to soften the volume of the din. Thank you for creating such a fine business. Pigs do Fly and there is a great gastro pub in Oceanside. Don't be scared off by the industrial neighborhood and dark exterior of this place. Find some ample street parking and get in this place. Inside there is a nice bar area for drinks while waiting to be seated. They have a great wine and beer list including some rotating taps. I like that they have a solid lineup of draft beers that should please most in your party including Ale Smith and Racer 5 IPAs, a local Temecula brown ale, a stout, a porter, a belgian, etc. The food menu is much better than you would expect from a bar as they serve flatbreads, beet salads, pork belly, steak, pork chops, and homemade pasta. Our party of 4 decided to try a lot of everything including the bacon and cheese grits (yum) and the flatbread appetizer (tasty). The pork chop was quite good with brussel sprouts (yes... those) and they weren't bad with all the seasonings, oh and the fried egg added to the taste (thanks for the tip waiter). The pork belly with bread pudding was tender and flavorful. The homemade pasta was a good choice for my friend too. I saw the "baseball" cut steak at another table ontop of mashed and kale and it looked nice as did the fries that were floating around th place.
