What is super fun find nearby our hotel in San Francisco! From the photos on, it really wasn't expecting much but this place had a really cool vibe. We made a reservation before we left using Yelp's waitlist and that was a lifesaver. They had a table ready as soon as we walked in, but it was right near our window and there were some stuff going on outside, but we just weren't too keen on so the staff happily allowed us to give the table to someone waiting and wait for the next available. We opted for the three flavor hot pot so we could try three bases. Our favor ended up being the hot one of course, but then the second was the tomato soup base which was kind of surprising. The menu has a lot of different offerings, but many of them are extremely authentic and traditional, which could be difficult for the uninitiated hot pot goer. I would say this is definitely in advanced hot pot restaurant while we did enjoy ourselves we found the selection is a bit limited for our more Americanized palette. Typically I'm quite adventurous, but we're talking some deep cuts of offal that while I've seen before, are simply not my style. That said they do also have an entire list of house marinated meats, most of which are very spicy. And they also offer richer cuts like Wagyu too. The style of service is kinda cool. The rock preparations come from the kitchen and they put them on a multitiered cart at this side of your table. This way you can bring them onto the table as you're ready for them and add them to the hot pot in the order you'd like to enjoy. Unfortunately, the house specialty chili beef that we ordered ended up on a second tier of the shelf and we did not even see it come to the table so we did not get to enjoy that. We didn't even realize it was there until we all got up and paid the bill and the server said oh what about this? Fortunately they were quick to remove it from the bill realizing what it happened and apologize for the situation entirely, which we thought was very nice. I really enjoyed the sauce bar, which had a few different recipes shown for based on regional preferences for these dipping sauces. They also offered a few different cold salads and palette cleansers that could go with your meal too. At the end of the meal, there's also a frozen yogurt machine. That's by design because by the end of eating hot pot you were sweating from ear to ear and you will need something like that to cool off your mouth and everything inside if you've done things right. I would happily revisit this restaurant again with pro tip bring lots of people. read more

I was a bit hesitant about this place because a lot of the Google and Yelp reviews look like they're from fake/burner accounts, but I can confirm that Nan is a good option for hot pot in an area with very few options. We were a party of 3 and came at 5pm on a Thurday There was no one in the restaurant when we arrived, but around 1-1.5 hours later the place was pretty packed and boisterous. We ordered the two flavor hot pot with tomato and hot and sour soup, along with a modest selection of meats, noodles, veggies, and fish balls. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough food, but I ended up leaving super stuffed. For +$3, you can use the sauce bar and also munch on appetizers there like seaweed knots and what looked like preserved veggies, plus desserts like tofu pudding, soft serve, and fruit. I don't normally like tomato soup for hot pot as it can be too ketchup-y and sweet, but this tomato broth was actually quite savory and tasty, probably the best tomato broth I've had. The meats and everything else were pretty standard, and portions were not big but not tiny either. We ended up spending about $35pp after tax and tip, which felt reasonable. The restaurant itself looks very nice and clean, and the workers are very prompt with refilling the broth when it gets low. Overall this is a really welcome addition to the area and I hope it encourages other hot pot restaurants to open in the area! read more

After making it back to the city, I was really craving hot pot. I was stuck between my favorite, Tasty Pot, and Nan Hot Pot. I decided to try something new and it was closer to my hotel. The first time I tried to visit the restaurant they were beyond packed and although the waitlist claimed 2-12 minute wait time, I knew it was going to be longer. I left but returned the next day for lunch and joined the waitlist again. My first notice: the restaurant completely ignored the waitlist. My party and another single diner were waiting to be seated--I was listed as next to be seated. Another woman and her children were sat before both of us. The restaurant itself isn't super small nor huge in size and seating. After about 15 minutes, both my party and the single patron were sat. I arrived at the table and it wasn't necessarily cleaned after the previous diners. The meat was good but the portions were smaller than other places I've frequented in the city. After finishing the meal, I realized less than an hour later that it did not agree with me and my partners stomach. This was the only thing we had eaten. We were both unwell well into the night and into the next day. Next time I'll stick to my favorite or head to Clement for Shabu Club. This was not worth it. read more

The broths and selection of items were excellent, the newly renovated interior was clean and modern, and the sauce bar was great, too. Everything is à la carte (no AYCE option) and the total for two, including tax and tip was around $120 so more expensive than the Hotpot Champ AYCE option down the street. Great spot. Fantastic ventilation and good flavors. I was surprised to find this hot pot place, a couple blocks away from SF Chinatown. Interior is a little cramped, especially with the movable tray-carts butting up against tables for additional surface area for servers to stash the raw hot pot ingredients. Luckily, my party of six had a reservation for the evening, which was a blessing as there was a fair around the entrance. Table dimensions are well thought out, with everyone being able to reach to where the hot pot is located. It is a hot pot place and it's expected that you do a fair amount of work for your meal, but the staff were very focused on trying to get food to the table and nothing more beyond that. We had to really try hard to flag down staff to get us seated for our reservation, and during the meal, to get them to refill the broth when it ran low. Thankfully, there's lots of self-serve features in the place. There's a saucing station with plenty of recommended combos (including their house special oil). Self-serve ice cream where all you have to do is place the cone in the holder and the machines handles all the dispensing for you. And the table has a big cup of chopsticks, a jug of water, and other necessities to wrangle your food to your plate. My table did a split on the bases, and got the spicy beef tallow and a mushroom soup base. The spicy base was great and it like all hot pots, became more flavorful as the evening went on. Great ventilation is a huge plus to the place, along with the aprons they give everyone, so your clothes don't end up a mess nor smell like they were part of the hot pot too. Meats were fresh and flavorful. There is a very limited selection of non-meat options (only a few veggies and other things like noodles) so be prepared for a lot of meat. I would recommend Nan for hot pot in SF if you're going with a larger group as the table sizes and portions felt very geared towards parties of 4+ and would be harder to do with fewer. The restaurant setup, small amenities they offer and food is great, but expect very minimal help from the staff when you dine. read more

I made a reservation, showed up on time, and then waited 30 + minutes for a table. So what exactly is the point of taking reservations if you can't actually keep the reservations? I understand it was busy and they needed to go through but they should have said "excuse me" and I would have been happy to move. We asked around for a manager and no one attended us so we just left. Very disappointed. This place looked nice and had good enough reviews for me and my boyfriend to try it for our anniversary. After waiting 20 minutes longer for our reservation than we were originally told we were given an ipad to order, then made to wait another 15 minutes. We were looked at by the staff like we each had two heads. While eating proficiently with chopsticks a server comes up to my boyfriend and asks "Are you sure you do not want forks?" as she laughed in his face. This caused all the people at the bar infront of us to turn around and stare. My boyfriend is not asian so I can only assume that was a racist remark.
