My SO had really talked up Fontaine (in particular the crepes), but every time we tried to visit, the wait was just too long for the kids. Finally, we got there right at opening on a Saturday at 9am and were immediately seated outside. Brunch runs from 9am-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. They take no reservations, so expect to wait as Fontaine sure is popular! A couple of things to note: 1. they are currently adding a 10% service charge which is NOT gratuity-don't let it catch you by surprise and 2. There is a 90 minute limit for each table. There is a full bar; however, I recommend taking a peek at the Cider list. These seasonal VA ciders from Cobble Mountain Cidery are great-try the Blackberry! The kids ordered from the kids menu-both enjoying their banana and chocolate crepes!I loved the Cold smoked salmon and avocado tartine served on toasted brioche with tomatoes and creme fraiche. The portion size was filling, ingredients have fresh and mixed well together, although, I believe $20 is a little steep for this dish. My SO ordered the Shakshouka (spicy Moroccan tomato sauce simmered with egg and spicy lamb sausage) which came with salad and a baguette. Again, I feel the $23 is a little steep, but this dish was absolutely perfect! I loved the spice and the savoriness of this dish. As others have noted, service is lacking at Fontaine. I've found the service to be unfriendly and off-putting as well as inattentive. Just because there are children at a table does not mean the server should ignore that table except when taking the order and bringing the food. I also got an iced vanilla latte for drinks. The food was good, nothing special but satisfying. The best item was probably the Nutella crepe. It was pricier than we expected. For 2 people we ended up paying around $80 after tip. Food didn't seem like it was worth that much. Lots of tax and service fees were added. Interesting fare here, and some excellent flavors especially with the dessert crepes, but the the restaurant was sadly understaffed the evening we dined here, which affected the overall experience. Reservations aren't taken here, so we showed up and checked in with the host. We knew that we would have to wait, and we stood off at a distance so that we wouldn't be hovering over the diners finishing their meals at the outdoor table. After a short while, a table for four left, and we expected to be seated soon. However, the table didn't get cleared for nearly 15 minutes longer. When we finally get seated, it was another long wait until our order was taken and water brought to our table. Most of us opted for lighter fare, knowing that we were going to indulge in the dessert options. The Fontaine salad and the Provençal salads were both fresh and delicious, with the Roquefort cheese in the Provençal providing a nice pungent punch. I ordered the "Washingtonian" crepe, a creation that I had never would have imagined in crepe form. With beef, carrots, potatoes, and mushrooms in a brown sauce, it was basically beef stew wrapped in a buckwheat crepe. It was quite delicious. It was another long wait for dessert. I appreciate slow dining, as it allows for good conversation, but this was just a little much. A friend who joined us joked that our server must have quit. Eventually we received a trio of sweet treats - peach, lemon, and Black Forest. All were excellent; arguably well worth the wait (though the others around us waiting to be seated probably wouldn't have agreed). I have always wanted to go to Fontaine and finally got the chance to stop in for lunch the other day. It is definitely small and cozy but we were seated right away at the beginning of lunch. The servers were amazing at juggling everyone once it really started filling up. Our group stuck to the crepes but everything looked and smelled delicious. We got the Tuscan and Greek crepes and they were so nice. Each came with a little side salad and were surprisingly filling. I can't leave somewhere with crepes and not get a sweet one so our group finished out our meal with the chocolate decadent crepe and their special blueberry. So, so good! I would order the chocolate filling all on its own and eat it with a spoon if I could! Absolute love this adorable establishment and will find more excuses to come back in the future! read more

We try to travel a bit in retirement and look for locally-owned, non-chain restaurants to patronize. Some are fantastic, some not so, and for the latter we want to warn others so they can save their money. Fontaine's slogan is "Where the locals eat." Our first clue should have been when we walked in and the place was nearly empty. - When we asked if we could make a filling substitution on a crepe (due to a dietary consideration) the waitress, who didn't seem all that interested in her job, said "no." - They charge $5/cup for coffee that has obviously been sitting on a warming plate for three to four hours (I know the taste well from an office I used to work at) probably because the place was nearly empty. - They charge $15 for one slice of French toast that was well-browned on the outside and under-cooked goo in the center probably because the batter was cold or the heat was too high. - They charge $18 for a crepe that looks flat because there's so little filling. - THEN THEY CHARGE 10% on top of that with some scam "restaurant fee" that no other restaurant we visited did and is never mentioned anywhere on the menu or their Web site. This is an operation looking to take advantage of tourists, plain and simple. Trust me when I say you DON'T want to eat here. read more

A lovely shop that serves good coffee and sacks This is one of the many shops in Old Town Alexandria. It is located on S Royale Street between Prince and King Street. It is about 4 blocks from Waterfront Park. There is street parking on both sides of the street and on the adjoining streets. I believe it is 2 shops in one. There is a restaurant on one side and a small coffee shop on the other. The restaurant has some seating both inside as well as tables outside along the sidewalk. We decided to get a coffee and a snack in the smaller store. This has a few tables inside and a small curved counter at the back of the store. We ordered several coffees of various sizes and types to walk around the town. It was a very small and cozy establishment. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The drinks came out quickly and were delicious. The prices were very reasonable with the coffees and teas ranging in price between $2 and $4. The store was clean and the experience was very pleasant. I would recommend this to my fellow travelers and hope to try out the restaurant on our next visit. read more

Definitely go for something else if you like your food hot. Asked to speak to the manager or owner but the waitress said that they were not available and they were running the show without one. No apology was given and they said they could not give any discount due to the poor service because there was no manager or owner on premises.
