So many great craft beers on tap to choose from! Seriously, if you can't find a craft type beer here you like go back to drinking Bud Light piss water. As I walked in and viewed the long row of taps behind the bar my eyes lit up! Looking over the expansive beer list made me drool. So many to choose from and quite a few I had never heard of before. I was in brew heaven. Around 30 beers on tap! We were here to celebrate a friend's birthday and the owner hooked us up with one of the long bench tables for outr group. Love the dark rustic look of the place. Surprisingly it was not too crowded considering they have a happy hour 7 days a week until 7pm with $5 select beers and also $1 oysters. Nice bartender that let me try a few beer samples before I settled on a few I enjoyed. So why only three stars? The burly waitress who seemed to care less about helping us out with our drinks and beer suggestions. She was not too friendly and took forever to get our orders and bring over our drinks. I ended up going to the bar a few times by myself to get a beer as it was much quicker. Mind you the place was pretty empty that night. Maybe she was having a bad day but suck it up and deal. The other reason? It's all the way down on Houston in such an overplayed part of town. I had some reservations about coming here. My concerns were that it would be too crowded or too many rich kids. But and that's a big BUT, I also heard there was a killer happy hour. I am not sure if it was the fact that it was Memorial Day weekend or what but it was actually not crowded at all. There was plenty of room at the bar. I took a spot at the bar and saved a spot for my friend. I made it 15 minutes before the end of happy hour. There were 3 beers that were included on the happy hour special. And if you wanted to splurge there are beers ranging from $8-$10. The menu is extensive, 3 pages full of all kinds of beers from all kinds of breweries. I enjoyed just going over the descriptions and names. And that's just the draft list. There's also a food list, a cocktail menu and wine. And may I add they have wine on tap. Yes! Your eyes are not deceiving you! It's true, wine on tap. And lucky for this one, this included the Rose. I was able to squeeze in the Freigeist Hoppeditz Dopplesticke Alt altbier and a glass of the on tap Rose before the HH came to an end. I wish I could have squeezed in a mint julep on tap but I guess it will be just one more reason to return. My friend was late but I quickly struck up a conversation with this older couple at the bar. The wife was very interesting, she used to be a beer distributor and now she's a painter. When my friend arrived she ordered a cider and we order the mushroom crostini and the fries with the $2 extra truffle. The fries were light and had the right amount of truffle. We got 5 crostini and I enjoyed the hummus mixed with the woodsy mushrooms and of course more truffle oil! We even had a fun conversation with Hilary, the bartender about "bangs". I guess she trims her own bangs and they look phenomenal. She was super sweet and new her stuff when it came to beer. I love a girl who can talk beer!! I felt very at home here and I will be returning for sure. I need to get oysters here! It is officially on my to do list! Yes, I have a food to do list. This is a great small bar. Most table seating is in the rear and I believe it was all high top. We got a table as soon as we walked in. Luckily we got there when we did because the rest of the tables filled up very quickly soon after our party of four sat down. My Girlfriend and I met my Sister and her Husband in NYC while they were passing through for business and picked this spot due to their happy hour. We all tried some new drinks here. I tried their "tourist trap cream ale" and it was tasty but I did not taste much of a cream. I expected it to be similar to cream soda but it was more of a standard light ale. We ordered a few appetizers too include the duck fat French fries and pretzels. The duct fat fries were AMAZING! If you come here I highly suggest you order them. It was also trivia night on Monday so we ended up playing when it started. We came in fourth and were the smallest group. All in all trivia was great fun and the trivia guy was lively. During a quick visit back home, my brother took us to this little gem. This was his hangout spot. We arrived and only ordered drinks. I got a red wine that was out of this world. I wish I remembered the name. It was amazing! I am not a red wine connoisseur but I am working out it. Additionally, it just go happened to be trivia night. Went here Monday afternoon for brunch. My friends were drinking the boozy bottomless brunch. But I just had water. I will say, the waiter was very good with continuing to refill my friends mimosas. We ordered food and the food all came out at random times .. first 2 meals out of 6 people ... then another 3 meals came out 10 minutes later... and lastly our last friend waited 20 minutes to get her food after we all did- with NO explanation on why or "I'm sorry about the wait" ... nothing. We had a horrible and traumatizing experience here as the bartender exhibited racist behavior to me and my friends. He refused to make eye contact or serve us and when we finally got his attention, he told us to go find somewhere else to drink. He was also drinking on the job and intoxicated when he said all this. He then proceeded to follow us outside and tried to fight us multiple times even though we tried walking away and telling to leave us alone. The bouncers were bystanders as they saw this behavior but told us that they was nothing they could do and they had to stand with "their boy". Honestly very traumatizing & sad we had to experience this -- we will be reporting this behavior to the NYC government but nothing will probably happen. Please don't support this place. read more

Stopped by here to watch the Yankee game. Glad we did, it was a fun time. My friend and I were walking around looking for a place to watch the Yankee game. Through the window, we noticed that Fools Gold was playing it, so we popped in. What a good time we had. Decor was pretty neat. Solid wood with some good lighting. The crowd was varied, so you had some young folks, some old folks, and all your in-between NYC niche groups. We took a seat at the bar and were tended to quickly. It was pretty crowded so the fact that the bartenders were quick and attentive was great. That's not easy to do and always appreciated. We didn't get to eat, but we had such a good time, I can't see us not going back. If you go to Fools Gold, expect good service, and a nice clean place, and a few tvs to watch some sports. read more

The last time I walked into this spot it must've been in a haze because during my most recent visit I knew my deja vu was too strong for it to be a mistake. Regardless, I found myself at Fools Gold (possibly for the second time) on a Tuesday afternoon to grab a drink with a friend and catch up about the long Memorial Day weekend. We opted to order at the bar and take our drinks to the front of the space where we sat on stools and people watched those walking on the street outside. The space itself is MASSIVE. Definitely one of the longest bars I've seen in NYC. Thankfully it wasn't too busy while we were here but I don't doubt they have more then one bartender on deck during their busy weekend hours. Ordering was fairly quick and we got our drinks in a matter of minutes after we walked in. The feel is more on the rustic side and you can tell the bar has been open for a long time. The bathroom is adorned with stickers and decals, the furniture looks worn out, but this all adds to a homely feel that I appreciated from the moment I walked in. It felt comfortable and not cramped, which is all you can really ever ask for from a bar in the city. My friend and I arrived just in the middle happy hour as well. We both ordered the $5 IPA they had on draft. It goes until 7 PM on weekdays so I'd make sure to get there sooner rather than later to avoid any potential crowds that might swarm the place. Overall this seems like the ideal spot to grab a few drinks with a group of friends or people watch from the front of the bar on a slow day. It took about 30 minutes for our waitress to come over and take our order. Fools's Gold must have been short-staffed that night because she looked like the only waitress walking around and taking/bringing people's orders. We almost walked out without (unintentionally) paying the bill! Although our fault as well, she did not bring the bill to us despite us having finished our food for at least 40 minutes now. It looked like she only remembered to do it once we were actually leaving. Overall kind of an "eh" place but we did enjoy our mac and cheese! It was large enough to split between two people and still feel full. The dish was very cheesy, although it could have used more meat on it. Hopefully, I don't have to come back here again. read more

On a Tuesday afternoon, Fools Gold was quiet yet not without customers, which is quite different from the night crowd. We ordered Siracha Honey Wings and Duck Poutine which were both unique and delicious. It's hard enough finding poutine in the US but pontine drizzled with duck fat and tender duck is a huge plus. I also tend to fall for never ending craft lists and large wooden tables. And Fools Gold have both. This is definitely going to be another regular in my book. read more

Just discovered this place last night. The perfect place to eat/drink after Rockwood Music Hall. N.B: BE CAREFUL AS YOU EXIT. I twisted my ankle on the step (the same one I sprained in 2011, tearing tendon and ligament, and now I'm limping and have doctor at 3pm. I didn't know it was owned by the same people who own The Rochard. Just got the October Yelp analytics and my most popular picture was the taco I had while waiting for friend at Mount Sinai. Delicious veggie taco, very spicy. (I still miss ABV wine bar but the same chef is behind the Rochard menu. I think pea agnolotti an lobster bucatini with some exotic sausage was a bit too much for the neighborhood.) The chicken tacos (two) were perfect. Also extremely spicy, good portions, tender chicken. Came here for a casual Friday dinner after post-work drinks. The bar was pretty crowded with the happy hour rush, but we managed to find a table in the back, near the second bar. The place is sort of divey, but slightly more well-maintained than than most dive bars. The beer selection was pretty good with their rotating drafts, although I kinda went with a more run-of-the-mill selection with my Allagash White. Regardless, there are many different draft beers you can select from, as well as a great bottle selection. As for food, most of us went for the Gold Label burger, which was pretty flavorful, despite being slightly overcooked. The fries though. We got an extra basket of garlic fries, because why the heck not? When they came out, we were a little confused because there wasn't any semblance of seasoning on the fries, but once we took a taste, we realized that the fries had been drizzled with garlic butter, the light bulb went off in our heads. Hoo wee, those were good. We saw someone come out with the Irish Nachos, which looked huge and loaded with toppings, so will definitely have to try that during a future visit. Service was decent at the very beginning, but got kinda spotty near the end of our meal, as it took almost 15 minutes to get our check. The prices are actually pretty reasonable for both food and drinks during normal hours, although I'd like to try their happy hour some time, which includes $5 beers, wine, and whiskey drinks. I love bars in NYC that not only have a great drink selection but good food. This is a nice place to grab a drink and hang out. The drink menu is about 6 pages long and the food menu is just as extensive. The bartenders were very nice and attentive. We ordered Buffalo Wings and the Duck Confit Poutine. The wings were amazing.
