A good stop when bar-hopping in search of the best beer that NYC has to offer, you can come here on your way down from the East Village after stopping at Proletariat, Barcade, Good Beer, Cooper's and Jimmy's and then continue on to Whole Foods Bowery and Top Hops, or do the whole thing in that reverse order. Either way, this place is worth dipping into for a beer or five, and if your pals/company aren't beer lovers, the cocktails here should do the trick. I say should because I don't bother with cocktails when there's good beer to be had. When I dropped in in early January 2015, Carton's Gilded Lily, a Begian-style tripel brewed with truffles, was on tap. Sounds weird, right? That's why I wanted to try it, because I like the unique beers that stand out from the crowd of IPAs, and it was in fact quite tasty. Points to Fool's Gold for having that on tap and supporting this somewhat local brewery from the Dirty Jers. Also, props for having Other Half on tap, in this case Doug, a Cascadian Dark Ale made in BK. Other Half is doing a great job of getting their beer into NYC's bars and Fool's Gold is doing a great job by supporting this excellent little brewery. The rest of the beer menu was solid and I could have had a few more pours of beers I hadn't tried, you know, for the Untappd ticks, but I had a few more bars to check out. It was nice they had the NFL playoffs on the tv while we were there and we quickly found seats at the bar (on a Saturday afternoon), plus the server was as courteous and friendly as one can possibly expect an NYC server to be, so I have few complaints here. On future NYC visits, I'd like to come here for Sunday Brunch to take advantage of their all-you-can-drink deal that includes some of the beers on tap. I can't believe it's taken me so long to come here when I've been meaning to try it for so long. I didn't even know where it was, I've literally passed it on the way to other bars (the outside is really unassuming). I came in on a Wednesday around 5:30 and the place was pretty quiet. By 9 it was crowded but not obnoxiously so, it's a really big space for the LES. Jack is an awesome bartender and took care of me the whole time I was there. She let me sample the Bruery Smoking Wood, advising me not to order a whole glass till I had tried it. She was right, this stuff is heavy, rich, and smells like rye. I ended up sticking with delicious Boulevard beers the whole night, my favorite being the 80 Acre. Also on her recommendation, I avoided the Palate Wrecker (I'm not a big hops fan). I meant to end the night with it, just out of curiosity, but got too sloshed for any such nonsense to be appealing by then. I ordered the $1 happy hour oysters (Peconic Bay). They are MASSIVE. Hard to eat massive. I mean, one of the bartenders assured me that my choking and getting cocktail sauce everywhere was very attractive, but I'm not sure I believe him (though I appreciate the lie). They're a great value, open wide and do it. I also had the mac n cheese, which I was okay with. They use Canadian bacon, and since Canadians have no souls, their bacon suffers. This is science. But it's a big portion and the perfect thing to have in front of you when drinking. Music was a nice mix, I sang along to something at one point so they must have played at least one rock song. Along with something else I liked enough to Shazam. ETA: Jane is also a really, really capable and friendly bartender. The owner is also a great guy, though of course I managed to forget his name. The wings are super tender and moist, the burgers are nice, salads are tasty, and they have these spicy pickles- these amazing spicy pickles. The place is large, if you walk in and it seems packed, it's because every single person congregates towards the front, and no one walks back, it's weird. There's a 'secret' third bathroom around the side towards the back, and as i'm typing this, already regretting saying that, but too lazy to hold down the delete button. I love this bar for their wide variety of draft beers. The ambiance is great and always a go to drink and dinner on a night out with ladies or the boys. Usually at midway of any good whisky drink, Im feeling content and buzzed. I finished my James King as if there it was soda drink. I'm not sure if it maybe they skimped out on the alcohol because i had the Winter Tippler book or the drink just wasn't strong enough. The white bean hummus dip on the other hand, is also no hummus. I would say it's a white bean paste drizzled in oil that doesn't stand a chance of sinking into the 'dip'. Fools gold is among one of my favorite places in nyc. Great beer selection, they started carrying my favorite bourbon and the food is on point. They are right on Houston ave between Forsyth and Eldridge in the LES. Every time I come in the beer selection is something new and on my last visit they had a few beers on tap from Hill Farmstead. This was the first time I had tried their beer after hearing about them over a year ago. They also have some good bourbon to choose from, I've been working in Kentucky for the last few months so I have honed my bourbon taste. One of my favorites seemed to be only avaliable in and around Kentucky, until I saw the uniquely shaped bottle on their shelf and asked if it was the 12yr. It was and that pretty much set in stone my urge to come here every time I go out. I also love the atmosphere and decor, it's dimly lit and usually nice and quiet. Of course I come here on the off nights, weekdays or Sundays. I'm sure on the hot nights like Friday and Saturday it's probably packed. The food is also great, I've tried a little bit of everything and have zero complaints or critiques. So stop by, sit at the bar and enjoy and good beer or bourbon. I used to love fools gold as a kid. I'm clever, so, I realized it wasn't real, but still, the look of it was pretty awesome, and, I felt cool owning it. Now that I'm older, well, I still kind of like it. But, when I heard of a bar opening with the same name sake, well, I had to check it out. So, I went to Fools Gold on the Lower East Side. This rustic and wooden clad, keg adorned bar offers about 30 beers on draft and a food menu with snacks and entrees. I went for happy hour, where you can get $5 beers, wines, whiskey, and $1 oysters. I grabbed a glass of Rosé. It was pretty delightful, crisp, and for $5, no complaints here. Then, you always need a little bit of a snack to go with some drinks. So, I had some of their Popcorn with Truffle Oil. A tad bit on the oily side, but the flavor was awesome. Popcorn really is, like, the perfect snack. read more

I am a big fan of Fools Gold. My buddy and I usually make this a part of our all star great beer hopping trips when we are in the city. They always have a solid lineup of beer including local favorites from breweries like Interboro LIC, Equilibrium and much much more. They especially stand out for me since they were one of the first bars I remember in this area getting Lawson's on tap. OK enough beer nerd talk for those who have no idea what I'm talking about. I can't recall eating a full meal here but I have certainly eaten up their fries, wings and nachos all of which have been very good and pair perfectly well with a tasty beverage. This place is great. We recently came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. She had called in advance and reserved a table in the back with Rob (the owner). Rob was extremely nice and greeted us and made sure we were happy during our time spent there. I was impressed by the craft beer list. So many options! I ended up with the Green Flash Double Stout (which is extremely tasty!). We also ordered fries (not enough truffle oil but good nonetheless), popcorn (had a taste of pepper to it), and jerky (very good). The only issue we ran into was our waitress. She was obviously not happy to be there and seemed to be annoyed when we asked for beer suggestions. The dim lighting, wooden furniture, and decor added to the miner theme. It had plenty of flatscreen TVs turned to every NCAAF game including the SEC network. They had at least 30 Craft Draft Beers including a Gose and Rhubarb Beer. They also had an extensive American Whiskey selection. We didn't eat but the Tacos and Deviled Eggs looked delicious as well. This is a nice bar that offer 30 craft beers, a big sitting area, and an open counter overlooking the street. The only thing I had here was the duck poutine and maybe it wasn't the best choice considering I was sober. The portion is pretty big for $12. Poutine is French fries, cheese curd, gravy, and here they topped it off with duck so it was a very heavy meal. This dish is native to Canada and I've had it there severs times. The poutine was just ok. The dish had way too much gravy so most of the fries were soggy vs crispy. There weren't enough cheese curds on there. The duck was a nice addition but it was a little gamey. Somehow this place felt cozy while being spacious at the same time. There are great tables in the back for groups, but we sat at the bar to get the bartender's recommendations on the many (over twenty, I believe) beers on tap. He let me try a few sours to help me decide, and was very gracious when we were being indecisive about drinks or food. I loved having sours with dollar oysters during happy hour, and my friend had a hefty pretzel. I definitely want to come back for their whiskey selection, and to eat a real meal there since there were so many tempting options on the menu. We were excited to have stumbled upon Fools Gold, sister bar of The Jeffrey, while waiting to catch a movie at the amazing Sunshine Cinemas next door. The crowd was a little bit rowdy, but it was otherwise an enjoyable atmosphere for catching the end of some football games while we waited. We ordered a couple of beers from the gigantic draft system (I had an Anne by Saint Somewhere, a farmhouse saison with floral notes) and noticed that the food looked pretty good, too. Since my friends and I were looking for a new spot to have our next Oyster Club meeting, I took special note of the oyster happy hour (M-F, 4-7pm), which consists of 6 oysters + one of two predetermined happy hour beers for $12. One thing that's interesting to note is that you have to get the beer to get the dollar oysters, so it's imperative that you like both of these to enjoy this particular special. We all do, so last night we did indeed come back to Fools Gold for the oyster HH. All of the oysters were East Coast Ware River. A friend and I got the Black Hog Down, a black IPA, and another had the Pumple Drumpkin, a pumpkin beer. We were a little bummed that we happened to put in the last three oyster orders of the day, because I know I definitely would have had more, but this allowed us to branch out and try some additional menu items: -Craft grilled cheese sandwich (Maple smoked cheddar, fig spread, truffle butter), served with sriracha tomato bisque. This was really tasty, but it was a little overpowered by the fig. The bisque wasn't something I'd order again. Charcuterie plate: Tasso ham, Proscuitto di San Daniele, gouda and goat cheese, served with almonds, dried apricot, and fig spread. Great meats and cheeses. I especially liked the ham, which was super smoky and kinda spicy. I was in Manhattan for my gf bday and we were looking for some bars to hit up. So we get to yelping and what do you know this place was literally a 15 sec walk down the block so we decide this will be our first destination. We walk in and the first thing we noticed were the old school games they had inside like guess who and chutes and ladders. The vibe was cool from the get go. We end up ordering a round of drinks to get the festivities going. The special they had gave you a complimentary drink with certain meals and drinks. I had a few tacos but my favorite one was the duck taco. It was incredible. I don't think I ever had a taco that good before. We continued to drink a bit more before we got on with the bar hopping. I came back two nights later for a quick drink and had the same good vibe even though the place was a lot less crowded. My next NY visit I'll definitely keep this place in mind. read more

I came to Fools Gold when I was traveling in NYC for work, and it was recommended to me by the bartenders at their sister bar, the Jeffrey. I loved the Jeffrey so much, I was eager to find a similar craft beer gastropub, but downtown closer to my office. Fools Gold was amazing! It was basically a replica of The Jeffrey, but maybe a little bigger. The beer selections were top notch, so many draft lines, and they give you samples of whatever you want to try. I had some very good local NY beers that I can't get down in Philly where I live. The food was also great, I had the bruschetta which was amazing, and a mac n cheese special with bacon, yumm. I sat at the bar, so I could ask questions about the beers and try some samples. The bartenders were great, prices were good, food was really good, overall a great bar! Hosted our company holiday party here. The folks that run this establishment are some of the nicest, most attentive bar owners I've ever had the pleasure of interfacing with. They were super fast with response times when we were originally discussing hosting the party here. Renting out the whole space for 3 hours was incredibly well priced. The liquor and beer selections were top notch. The food was DELICIOUS. The space itself was beautiful. While all of these things are cause enough for a 5 Star Review the real reason I'm writing this 5 Star Review is because of how attentive they were to us. They were super vigilant and made sure no one from outside the company came in during our rented time. One of our coworkers has a serious dietary problem and they crafted a special plate of food just for her. It was all these small things they did that really truly made this such an amazing night and I am incredibly grateful to the managers for it. Dollar oysters ... What?!?!? A great find. As I often do I was wandering around before a show at another venue and just wanted to grab a drink and maybe a light snack. This place is real rough around the edges. That may have to do with that they only opened a few months ago or it is just the feel/look they are going for; either way it works. They do have lots of beers on tap but I ordered my favorite vodka with pineapple juice as I am not an avid beer drinker. The way this place has made me fall in love is the dollar oysters during happy hour. I mean really I just love oysters - but I love dollar oysters even more!
