This is the second time we have eaten at Forc. The service is excellent our waitress remembered us and was great at answering questions about the menu and ingredients. Being from the Big Island, I am impressed with how the chef works with local ingredients and has created such a versatile local dining experience. The peppercorn clams were excellent. The broccoli was a little "tough" but the poi was ono (delicious). 18oz grilled steak was very disappointing. It was raw and not well seasoned. I'm not the type to send food back as I'm afraid of what I would get back. Just ate around the edges that was a little more cooked. Definitely not worth the $39. This was our last "fancy" meal on the Big Island and was so looking forward to an awesome experience. Server was great though. We visit Kona often so might give it another chance next time we are there as this restaurant has so much potential to be 5 stars. Dunno...we'll see. read more

Just Fantastic! We had a party of four and ate "family style" (sharing a bit of everything) in order to check out Chef Allen's menu. I think the best review information I can share is that our conversation was a series of brief "Wow!"'s and "Oh My God!"'s as we made our way through each dish. Everything was spot on and tasted great. We started with pairs of sweet house made portuguese bread rolls baked in their own dish and served hot at the table. This was followed by soft shell house made flour tortillas filled with savory braised goat that was just heavenly in favor. We were not shy in using the last bits of the bread to "sop up" any of the braised sauce that was left of the taco plate -- it was that good! The salad was farm fresh and helped to show off the local goat cheese crumble -- a nice dish to have between courses. Normally the menu offers a whole kampachi, but the night we dined there were fresh menpachi available. These tender fish are delectable little morsels and when paired with the garlic ginger butter and unagi reduction sauce were the source of much happy eating at our table! The bone-in slow smoked hog with caramelized onion was another crowd pleaser. Tender, sweet and savory at the same time. Just "Wow!" While these main dishes were all great we were in heaven when we dove into the side dish of the "Rancher Mash". Mashed potatoes with goat cheese, green onion and bacon that was "over the top" good. And just to note that the "bacon" was clearly house made cubes of crispy flavorful meat -- just fantastic. Dinner wouldn't be complete without dessert. We were fortunate to have a lilikoi crumble cake -- 3 layers with the distinct island taste of lilikoi (passion fruit) with some whipped cream and a sliver of shaved chocolate. The perfect finish to our meal. Our only regret was that we only sampled a portion of the menu -- we'll be back to try more items soon! read more

Creative, high end food in a nice but not stuffy environment. The goat tacos were one of the best dishes I've ever had, the clams were also great. The steamed kampachi was solid, the accompanying veggies were delicious and it was a very hearty portion of fish. The charred sweet potatoes weren't my thing, but interesting and glad I tried them. The desserts are big enough to share and the Portuguese egg tart was delicious and not overly sweet. Highly recommend this place for a nice meal I'm Waimea! read more

Great restaurant. We enjoyed everything we ordered! Chef inspired dishes with local ingredients. We were skeptical about the smoked meat because that's normally like lardons, but the meat was excellent! I was also worried the goat would be served with/on the bones, but it wasn't! Whew! Very tasty. The lilikoi crunch cake for dessert was fabulous. Often restaurants do main courses or desserts well but not both. Happy to say that FORC (Forest, Ocean, Ranch, Chef) did very well all the way around. And... for now anyway, the price was 25-50% lower than their primary competitor. My family and I ate dinner expecting a lovely meal but were quickly turned. We waited for utensils for about a half a hour. The ambiance was quite welcoming, though a bit chilly. The owner and server were very polite. From there that's when things to a turn for the worst. The filet steaks were quite petite and the mash potatoes were quite sour. Not to mention one steak was over cooked. Now for the best part. My grandfather woke up in the middle of the night with severe food poisoning. DONT GET THE OYSTERS AND BONE MARROW!! read more

Food was excellent, the best lau lau and poi ever! Grass fed rib eye was delicious! Shrimps with red sauce was beyond great! The best treatment of varied mushrooms (mushroom poke) I ever had. The balance of sweetness and bitterness of dark chocolate ganache with puffed pastry on a bed of strawberries and basil was perfect. My wife couldn't stop eating. First time I went there. Drove all the way from Puna excited for a real steak house experience, to be an overpriced disappointment... I think they made the 18 oz steak out of a 12 oz by adding 6 oz of salt. Lamb was over cooked and certain the butterfish was tilapia with butter. Waited 15 minutes to be seated with an online reservation (guys were being served at the bar walk in no res) no greeter to be seen, took another 10 minute wait for water, and yet another 30+ minutes to be served appetizer, another 25+ minutes for entree. 7:30 reservation finally fed by 8:30, and they still forgot and the side never came out till we were pretty much done... Sad sad sad... Never going there again. Especially to be served garbage over the course of hour half at $225... Thanks but no thanks... Really disappointing. I feel like this is the place you go for a nice meal on vacation on this part of the Big Island if you messed up and didn't get a reservation at Merriman's, and it's just not even close. We had vegetarians at the table (including a well-behaved child) and the waitress had no idea what to do, didn't offer suggestions (and seemed annoyed at polite requests for help), didn't offer to get help, and just let them struggle. There is a vegetable section of the menu, but about 1/3 has obvious non-veg ingredients and who knows whether the other items did. They didn't have at least 2 bottles of wine on their list, had no comparable bottles to the ones we wanted, had no one to help with suggestions, etc. - just awful for the prices they're charging. Had a bottle of white and they brought a bucket but no towel/napkin and didn't bring one (or even seem to understand what we were asking for). No keiki menu. Ambiance is nice by the fireplace and the overall vibe is good. Some of the food was tasty, but the above issues for some of the guests along with the poor service, when compared with the prices and the image they're going for, makes this an easy pass in Waimea. I like what they're trying to do but they are missing the mark bigly. Either get a reservation at Merriman's or go to one of the excellent more casual places in the area. read more

Liked everything we ordered...my husband is ovo lacto and im pescatarian so we ordered fish for me (Ono was the fish of the day, a little bit dry but Twas ok) and lots of veggie dishes - the spinach reminded me of a Filipino local dish I like called Laing, cooked in coconut milk, the farmer's entree salad looked so pretty haha but it was just ok too, it had sweet potatoes which was the star of the dish... (and the cheeseboard (which had small portions of 4 cheeses)...my favourite was the garlic fried rice!!! So delicious!!! Would definitely come back!!! read more

Came for happy hour before our reservation (got one off yelp about an hour before dinner), great drinks (specialty martinis and beer) and then dinner after was phenomenal! It was the worst experience at a restaurant that we've had in a long time. We came here wanting to support a new business in town, and overall we thought the drinks were great and food was uneven, but we were made to feel so uncomfortable that we felt compelled to leave a review. When we were first seated, the service was unfriendly and slow. 10 minutes to get drinks; 15 for food during happy hour. That is, until the waitress clearly wanted us to leave 15 minutes before happy hour was over. At that point, it was obvious that we were being rushed out. She stopped by our table to check on us every 3 minutes, twice asking how we were enjoying a dish that hadn't even arrived yet, and pushed the check on us before we asked for it. We can deal with uneven food and service since it's happy hour and a new business. But we essentially got rushed and kicked out of the restaurant at 5 pm even though we ordered happy hour food at 4:45 pm, which really upset us. Advice for Forc - If you're going to want the happy hour crowd to leave at 5 pm on the dot, that's fine, but then end your happy hour earlier, and definitely don't make your customers feel uncomfortable to the point they feel they can't even finish the food and drinks they've ordered and leave! read more

I am a big fan of Mai in Waikoloa. I am super disappointed in Forc in Waimea. I was there for dinner wondering where the service went. It took a very long time to get our drinks that I noticed the patrons at the table next to us got up and left as they had not gotten their drinks, and they were there before us. The bartender it seems was putting on a show at the bar making exotic cocktails. The good was the same standard as Mai which says the restaurant has a future, but not with the kind of service provided. Alan, I hope you can correct this problem. read more

I came here when they first opened in 2021 and had a great meal with good service. I have been back 3 more times in the last couple years and I will not be coming back for a full meal (would come back for happy hour). The meals I have ordered have become progressively worse and worse over my last few visits, and many of my local neighbors and friends are saying the same thing. We always order steak - the first time we came, we got a large porterhouse (which was a special) to split which was perfectly cooked and delicious. Got the ribeye the last few times and it was dry, overcooked and under-seasoned. At this price point, with this caliber of restaurant, the steaks should come out consistently delicious and perfectly cooked ($52 for a small 7oz ribeye). The side of veggies we got weren't seasoned at all and the smoked potatoes were also unseasoned and dry. The wait staff wasn't warm, felt like they didn't really want to be there. The saving grace of this establishment is the bar. They have fantastic drinks and a decent happy hour menu (the goat tacos are delicious!). All in all, this place has a lot of potential but it feels like there is no heart anymore. read more

The long and short: overpriced given the quality of the food and service. While certain elements of the meal were very good, the overall presentation was lacking and the food inconsistent. We ordered the cheese plate, and although it was quite good there was no cheese knife, separate plates, or enough pieces of bread on the plate to justify the price. The cheeses, mustard, candied Mac nuts, and honey were all very good but the overall plate presentation was a fail. The waiter could not identify the cheeses when we asked what we were served. We also had ribeye, ahi, brocollini, potatoes, and fried rice. Unfortunately the ribeye was unevenly cooked. While everything arrived at the same time, the ahi and potatoes were too cool, and the potatoes took "al dente" to the next level. The broccolini and fried rice were quite good, however. The server, though nice, seemed a little befuddled and unprepared to speak to the selections and options. To top it off, the restaurant was rather loud. If you have money to burn then perhaps give it shot. I wouldn't go back. read more

Forc has strengths and weaknesses. Some of the seating, on hard benches and booths, is very uncomfortable. In another room, the spotlights are glaring and fight against a romantic atmosphere. The dishes we ordered were good, certainly above average, but not great. The Mahi Mahi was slightly mushy (miso glazed). Broccolini was well flavored but tough. The mushrooms in cream were delicious. Soon after we ordered, a large party came in celebrating an engagement. More people kept dropping in, so they were quite loud. The other side was raw and uncooked but for a char mark on one side. The sides were not edible. The prices are high.
