It was just ok, the crab cakes were not great, a little mushy with lots of filler. The corn muffins were very good, so maybe other items on the menu are better, but definitely don't get the crab cakes. We have been to other Ford's locations and really enjoyed their food, but this was a little off. The booth we sat in was not the cleanest, there was a framed picture in the booth that had not been cleaned in quite some time, had a little unappetizing feel. The service was very good. read more

I discovered Ford's after finding a pack of gift cards at my local Costco. We decided to purchase some to try the restaurant out. Right when we walked in, we were impressed by the decorations. It was definitely very fishy - buoys and lobsters hung from the ceiling. It felt like we were by the water in the Outer Banks or something. They had a lot of seats, both by the bar and large booths. The hostesses and our waitress were both super patient with us, which we really appreciated. As for food, we ordered the calamari to start. It was a decent sized portion for $14, paired with an orange sauce. I remember wishing there was a lemon to pair with. For mains, I ordered the New England cod. It was a very hearty portion and the cod was crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. My dad ordered the fish and chips and my mom ordered the fish tacos, both of which were big bangs for your buck. I tried a bit of the food and personally enjoyed their meals more than my own. My sister got a cheeseburger off the kids menu but she said she didn't enjoy her food - there was something hard inside her burger? But overall, the food isn't bad especially for the price. It was a day of seafood and my friends and I had to stop by Ford's Fish Shack. We had sat at the bar high tops and had the bartender take care of us during our lunch stop. We started with the broccolini, mussels, and half dozen oysters. The mussels were in a fantastic tomato based sauce that had so much flavor packed in that made dipping the bread served alongside some super yummy bites. The broccolini as pictured, unfortunately, was a bit disappointing as it came as only two pieces and didn't feel cooked all the way through. The portion size was certainly underwhelming. The oysters can be served different styles and while I don't partake, my friends really enjoyed them. For the main we ordered crab legs and a lobster roll. The lobster roll was served Chesapeake style and tasty but unfortunately it couldn't save my disappointment in my the fact that there wasn't much lobster. The crab legs on the hand were scrumptious and flavorful, especially with the warm butter on the side. The service was personable but as the restraint began to get filled up there was less of a service presence as our bartender was preoccupied while we waited patiently for the check. I'll definitely be comparing my hunger level to the food selections knowing what I know now. I would definitely return as the flavor and preparation is there; I will just be more aware of portion sizes. read more

Ford's Fish Shack is the place to go if you are in the mood for a lighter "healthier" fish and chips.  The fish is meaty and the batter is light and not at all greasy.  The portion is generous and comes with coleslaw and fries.  The fries are really skinny and I wish they were cut a little bigger, but that is just me.  It just seems you lose the potato taste when they are that skinny.  The appetizers are also tasty.  We really enjoy the rocket shrimp and the angry mussels.  The mussels come with a really good sauce and four thick slices of garlic bread to soak it up with.  The stress martini was good and the Ford's sangria was even better.  There is plenty of seating both inside and outside and the parking is very easy. read more

What a good spot this is. There's a reason for its popularity. Delicious food! I especially like the fish and chips. This is tasty, and also amazing crab cakes. The salmon is a smart choice, although that one is a little expensive. Seafood isn't cheap, and here you are getting your wallets worth. Every meal I've tried thus far enjoyed. They serve lunch and dinner, with both being well above average. How's the service? Excellent! Friendly staff who are quite fun loving, while also upholding professionalism too. If you're looking for a seafood place, this it! Fords has been one of our "go to" seafood restaurant for over 10 years. I wasn't able to get food photos this time, but got photos of the seating & outside area. Their Fish & Chips are the best! Fords is hands down the greatest of all the places I've been to for Fish & Chips. They are tender and fried to perfection. I take a bite and say "oh my gosh, delicious." Almost like a melt in your mouth euphoria. We love their cornbread little muffins, they come with a whipped butter and together they are perfect to have prior to the entree arriving. Request to Fords, please try to perfect the green beans that come with the Salmon dish, the green beans "were edible", but could have been cooked a little longer. I've tried the New England Cod only at the South Riding location (which is now closed until they reopen at a new location), the Cod is fabulous, but struggle with their green beans, they are typically undercooked with this dish. We ordered the Rocket Shrimp which was good and the green beans were cooked well with this dish. Overall, 100% love this place. 3.5/5 stars. Ordered the Fords shrimp Tacos to go. The shrimp itself was very tasty and fried well. It comes with a chipotle sauce for the tacos that is also very good. The taco as a whole was tasty, however the tortillas for my taco seemed a bit chewy to me. I ended up eating one taco then just eating the filling. I also ordered a side of the house cut potato chips instead of fries and those were quite nice and crispy. We got an order of calamari to try as well and I will say the sauce for the calamari was divine! The calamari also has a slight kick with the peppers they throw in there. Overall the seafood itself seemed good quality. Might try going for a platter next time. read more

Tonite didn't quite mesh with my previous experiences, the young man serving was nice enough but wouldnt respond to why he needed to card a 59 year old patron. In other words--old enough to know I'm well beyond 21. That was suspect to me.... The drink was too strong resolved by more cran juice---I recognize we need not complain about alcohol. I haven't seen him in the ten+ minutes that we established that I was done. The fish sandwich wasn't as tasty as I had hoped-a little messy---not my usual order. I think my visit went south when he carded someone with an AARP card. Again he was polite enough. Removed salad with too much dressing from check. Just waiting for check to be picked up so it can be corrected because friend at bar paid for my drink when I arrived.... If he didn't recognize I was old, he would know after this. I expected at least for him to recite the policy for carding. Lol. So much for winding down after a crazy day. Truly sad when a place that has such amazing food and potential, can't get a to-go order right. Third time in two years items were missing. I tipped $16.50 just to ensure someone took the food prepared, boxed it correctly and put it in a bag. You can have the best food in the world, but without the ability to get it to your customer - your business won't last. To the manager who allowed it, shame on you for poor quality control. To the kid who bagged it, you're done getting tips from me and your business is done earning money by selling me food that is only partially delivered. When you're spending $40-60 per person for a meal, you'd expect that servers/staff would get it right more than 50% of the time. If you want to eat here in person, the food is amazing. If you want to order out- either double check your order every time and don't tip until the food has been confirmed or go somewhere else. For me- it's not worth the hassle, there are plenty of competitors. read more

We've been coming to Ford's for years, by now. Great food -- as usual -- but the portion sizes seem to have reduced recently. Arrived at a busy time and skipped (or forgot) the reservation, so we had exactly a half-hour of wait. Parking is generous, to the front of the place. Seated at a booth, with passable (yet forgettable) atmosphere. Here's what we had: Drink, I had the blueberry lemonade. It sat quite right with me, thank you. It came with a large straw that facilitated the influx of fresh blueberries. For apps, we had the angry mussels and the calamari which upheld their rep. For entrees, our table had: - Fish of the day -- Arctic Char - Seafood basket w/ sautéed shrimp and scallops - Salmon - me: Lobster Roll, CT style w/ half-rack ribs as add-on, shoestring fries and grilled corn as side My dish -- the Lobster Roll -- was too bland for my palate. Looks like the Connecticut (CT) style only added butter as a side, which didn't really have any discernible effect to my tastes. Long story short, I could not taste my dish (at all). I tried to ignore the richness of bread and capitalize on the lobster bits alone, paired w/ butter. It was like pushing water -- or rolling a boulder -- uphill. The ribs I had (add-on) was likewise nothing great. I could barely taste the meager and drying BBQ sauce, and the meat felt comparable to chewing watered-down cardboard, after a fashion. There was no highlight to speak of, in regards to the dish I ordered. However, the other dishes ordered at the table were very tasty! For dessert, we went with the white chocolate bread pudding, which was served with vanilla ice cream. It was pretty aight, but not to our tastes. Overall, very good for seafood! read more

I can't believe it's slipped my mind to review this place but I've been here a handful of times and the Landsdowne location too. Food and service had always been consistently great. They're always accommodating and friendly. Most recently we had an almost 10 person party on a holiday and they were able to get us in almost immediately and it was pretty busy. Found out that they were doing $1 (or $1.50?) oysters that day so we got a dozen or two and they were great and very fresh. For my entree I got a basket with blackened scallops and shrimp. Both were cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Also the fistful of thin fries tied the whole thing together. The blueberry lemonade pretty tart but still good. The other stuff I've had like the pecan crusted trout, chorizo mac and cheese, the fish tacos, and their corn muffins are all great options too. It's always an option when I'm in the area and a great suggestion for someone who loves seafood in a local neighborhood spot type atmosphere. read more

What a treat. Broke mom out of Ashby Ponds for our first time visit here. Easy to see why it's so popular! We had fantastic service from Erika. Checked on us & really appreciate it when a manager came by to ask how her experience was as well. Delicious, salmon salad and I added the goat cheese. Of course I had to get french fries! Ford's Fish Shack in Ashburn is about what you would expect for a typical American Seafood restaurant. The seafood was fresh, the service at the bar was pretty good, and it was kind of chain restaurants. Started our visit with a craft draft beer and one of their signature cocktails. They have some local craft beer on tap which is a good thing I tasted a few throughout the visit and eventually settled for a Hoppy Piney local IPA, can't remember the name. Also tasted their 2 Fish IPA, which was pretty good. For starters I did the lobstah bisque and a cedar salad. Both were good, although I am not sure how much lobster was actually in the bisque, if any at all. Maybe there was "lobstah" in there. It was seasoned well. For mains we ordered the fish and chips with a side of lobstah chorizo mac n cheese and a fisherman's basket with scallops, shrimp and a side of crab legs. The fish n chips came with straw fries which were really good and fresh and a coleslaw which is one of the best I've ever had. I would go back just for the coleslaw. The fisherman's basket was done Cajun style and it was good as well. The Mac n cheese though was a disappointment. No lobster or chorizo in their dish that I could decipher. Still it was quite tasty. Finally, the place is pricey, but worth it. The seafood is well prepared. The portions are good for the money. They have great craft beer and cocktails. There is plenty of room for groups. We were seated right away and the service was great. The food is delicious and the service was outstanding. The Smoked Salmon Bruschetta is awesome, oh my goodness. It is the place to go for delicious food, very nice service and a good atmosphere. The blueberry lemonade with mint is a very refreshing drink. The steamed shrimp were very good as well. My friend had the Faroe Island Salmon and he absolutely loved it. The portions were excellent. The ambience of an old dock fish house was great. It made it seem very authentic and truly a place where you wanted seafood. I ordered the pick 4 seafood basket and the star for me was the fried clams and the fries, wow, excellent. We drove all the way from Montgomery County, Maryland to here because finding good seafood houses around us has all but disappeared. It was totally worth a trip as they knocked it out of park. And unlike many other seafood restaurants out there, they actually paid attention to the details, even on their side dishes. Here's a rundown of what we got: 5.0 - Cod Fish - Cooked perfectly with a delicious sauce and topped with lump crab meat. The mashed potatoes were out of this world delicious. The wife got this and kept feeding me pieces of it and I did not refuse. 5.0 - Basket of Fried Ipswich Clams and Shrimp - it's hard to find Ipswich clams for us these days so this was quite a treat. The wife and I shared this as an appetizer. 5.0 - Alaskan Crab Legs - This was my dish...fresh and delicious. 1 lb was $33. The corn on the cob that came with it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. They even took the extra step to grill it, as you can see in the picture, and it gave it a charred taste that was awesome. I'll definitely be craving that again. 3.5 - Lobster Bisque - We came at an off hour and the kitchen got a little slammed when they weren't expecting it, so they apologized to us for the anticipated wait and offered a bisque to help tide us over. It was a very nice thing to do, especially since the wait wasn't really that long. They were expecting an extra 20 minutes but it actually came out a lot quicker. I feel bad knocking the soup at all because it is actually not bad, it's just not great, and really no lobster to speak of. They use sambuca in the recipe instead of Sherry, and it was the little bit strong to us. Everyone is well-managed. The waiter came by often to check on us. A manager also came by to check on us. My second time at this location and the lobstah bisque hasn't disappointed. I really need to make plans to come on a day they are serving their clam chowder, smh. Service is always great and I rarely has to wait to be seated. To the food, lobstah bisque is a must try, the Maine Chips....was a miss for me, maybe I came on an off day but the entire dish was extremely salty, made it inedible. Love Fords. I've been to this one and the South Riding location. Both serve fresh seafood with a variety of other options, great drinks, and have amazing service. The ambiance is an upscale fish shack, that feels clean and inviting. They have the best deviled eggs, and trust me I'm picky with my deviled eggs! My husband and I are addicted to the crispy, sweet bacon that comes with it. The crab cakes are always a hefty portion! Definitely a good bang for your buck. I've tried them 2 times so far wanting to love them. I did have takeout both times perhaps they are better if you eat in however I don't live far from the restaurant so I wasn't worried about freshness. The last time we had fish and chips and shrimp. The fish was extremely greasy and had that "fishy" taste to it. (If you know you know) the shrimp were okay nothing to write home about. Fries were mediocre.
