S-L-O-O-O-W Service [Klamath CA] So it looks like the restaurant has rebranded because the sign in front now says Blue Ox Cafe and is part of the Trees of Mystery across the street. The restaurant is next door to a vintage roadside motel called Motel Trees. Inside the restaurant is spacious and had just reopened for the season this Spring. I had the Babe's Burger w/ Tater Tots and hubby the Cheeseburger Sliders small plate. While the food was good the kitchen service, on the other hand, was very slow... holy moly, it took at least between 30-45 mins to get our food. We were probably dining at the same time as the recent 1-star reviewer who complained about the wait. We were there on a Sunday during the Memorial Day weekend. Everyone was waiting for their food... and it's even worse when families have kids. We came to dine here because it was convenient and just across the street from Trees of Mystery. Our server was nice and sweet though and totally not at fault for the long wait from the kitchen. I stopped here for lunch after the Trees of Mystery, because it just looked so dang cute! I walked in, and oh yeah, super cute little cafe across the street from the Trees of Mystery. My waitress was a super kind and sweet woman who was attentive, but not annoyingly so. She got me my food rather fast - from my appetizer (the fried pickles, which were delicious!) to my burger! She even brought me out a pitcher of my drink so I could give myself refills. read more

First, in an area with few restaurant options, this culinary oasis is glorious! Convenient and fast! Even though they were closing in a half hour, they treated us like we had all day - very kind and welcoming! The food was amazing! The sourdough bread was grilled to perfection giving our Sourdough Sam Burgers an extra buttery flavor! The grilled onions were caramelized to perfection! All of our burgers were done perfectly! Everything was very HOT so every bite was amazing! Right before we paid, she carried two Blackberry Cobblers past us to another table! So glad that happened! We ordered one to split! It came out hot and delicious! We had them put our ice cream on the side so our cobbler would stay hot longer! This place pays attention to every detail! Okay, first of all they have rebranded and it's amazing! Now, the restaurant is called The Blue Ox Cafe. The place is very clean and you can tell they put a lot of needed love into the place. The staff was amazing and very friendly. We were expecting basic diner food, and we were pleasantly surprised at enjoying some amazing food which was cooked perfectly! Also, a great local beer selection. Our family of 6 (with a lot of picky eaters) all found something they enjoyed, and we even had a delicious brownie Sunday to end the meal on point. They have a niche area right across the street from trees of mystery and is part of the small hotel that's also right there. It is not a place to consider a must eat at, yet if you are hungry and waiting for trees of mystery to open or staying at the hotel.. it's convenient. The breakfast menu has like 5 options and it is all classic diner food options; omelet, hashbrowns, toast, etc. The food at best is okay; the coffee is hot at least. I was expecting better tasting food with such a limited menu but it wasn't. Having read a number of the other reviews, I am happy to say our experience was really positive! I am confident in giving this place a 5/5 star review based on our experience. I will say, the place did surprise me - I was not expecting as good as we got :) We were all very hungry when we pulled into the Forest Cafe - looking at the place it has that backwood, reheated frozen food, and dusty decor vibe. With that initial impression in mind, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. We got burgers and cobbler. The burgers were AMAZING! Located right across from the Trees of Mystery I expected it to be much busier. My family and I were starving after spending much more time than expected at the Trees. The restaurant is not much to look at, has a cute under water forest theme, but is pretty nondescript. Their menu is not extensive but it is simple food made well. Everyone in my party got either the burger or the kids sliders and everyone was satisfied. I really loved the burger. It had a very homemade touch and something about the seasoning and the slightly toasted bun was very nostalgic. It was delicious. The kids sliders had hand formed patties which was a nice touch. Service was solid, especially near the early 4pm closing time. The waitress actually ran across the busy road to give another customer their credit card which they had forgotten. We didn't expect a lot as it is pretty much the only restaurant near The Trees of Mystery (go there if you haven't already!). The waitress was super friendly and only one of two for the whole place. But the service was quick and efficient despite this. I had the Chainsaw (roast beef, bacon on grilled sourdough). Omg it was soooo good and the fries were awesome! The food was mid, overall it is overpriced. I got the clam chowder and it came in a small cup that looked like a tea cup. . The burgers tasted alright but the cheese wasn't fully melted and tasted weird. The water seems to also be sour and the bathroom sink water looked yellow.... But my servers was super kind. The lady with the blue key necklace (unsure of her name) was very attentive and asked frequently about how we were feeling or if we needed anything. 'It gets the job done'... that's my title. We were starving after spending an hour or two at the Trees of Mystery across the street. We didn't have cell service so we were limited on knowing the food options around us - which to say the least, there aren't many. This place is cute on the inside with a forest theme. We got a kick out of the underwater section. If anything, that's worth stopping by to see. The food is what you'd expect from any average American dinner... over priced kids menu of frozen nuggets or super basic spaghetti. I can't recall how they described the French dip, but it was not as premium as the description stated. Sure, it was edible. The fries were decent with a little added salt. The ambience fits right in with the natural beauty that surrounds it. On one side you can sit under a rain forest and on the other side you can sit under the sea. Super kid friendly. The waitress was amazing and very informative about the area. She also made suggestions about food and it was beyond anything I could've imagined! My husband had Corned Beef and cabbage and I had mushroom burger with the crispiest, most delicious french fries I can remember. The portions are large and we both had enough left over to eat the next day. We thought the prices were excellent and very reasonable! We stayed at the motel next door and were grateful not to have to drive somewhere to find food and coffee. The place is nicely decorated, but the service was very bad. They seemed to forget about us even though 2 servers walked by us multiple times. They kept helping the table next to us who came after us and would refill their coffee and kept checking if they needed anything. Each time we waited for them to look over or ask us and nope. No coffee refills, no checking if we needed anything and wouldn't take our check. Finally we went up to the front to pay and I regret giving them even the small tip that we did give. Pros- Absolutely a friendly, sweet waitress! Creative environment that sparked conversation. Convenient location and across from Trees of Mystery. Tables were made of solid slabs of wood. They were very cool. Cons- My clam chowder was barely luke warm and didn't taste all that great. Had some gel-like substance in it. Possibly corn starch to thicken it? Husband had the chicken strips and fries. Meh. The ceiling and walls had silk flowers and vines all over. They needed to be dusted and wondered how long since they had been. They are totally swamped the many times we've stopped in, (its a bit of delightful mayhem) but we always enjoy our snack. Eventually, the food comes and its good. Don't be in a rush. What is with the 2 stars? If you have children this place is the bom. It is good food, reasonably priced, and decorated with kids in mind. The ceiling is the faux top of the river. You see what the fish see. Duck feet and bottoms. Underside of rowboat, paddles, fishing pole... Huge plush posing for pictures bear to hug, waterfall... Did I mention breakfast was wonderful and fast? Coffee hot and strong like I like it? My ham slice big, sweet, delicious. His 4 sausages fabulous. Marbled rye toast...phat and wonderful! I ended up in here during the Covid pandemic once we were done visiting the amusement place right across the street. We were seated promptly and the waiters nice and fast. It's a typical diner place and so we were there during the lunch hour and ordered up some sandwiches which were good, nothing super amazing but they definitely did the job , I enjoyed my visit here and I'm grateful the place is even here because there's not much to eat anywhere nearby. We came to visit the Trees of Mystery and were hungry when we arrived here. Good thing there was a cafe here . The inside has interesting decorations to give diners an experience of dinning in the ocean beneath water. I ordered the lumber Jack burger and my wife ordered the sourdough burger. They both came with French fried. We started out with clam chowder soup. Everything was great. The burger were delicious; very close to the best that I have ever tasted. The clam chowder was amazing. I'll start with the coffee, it sucked. It was weak and my first cup was luke warm. The food was disappointing as well. They have a limited menu, five options, I think. We ordered the basic stuff - eggs, choice of meat, hashbrowns, and toast. The toast didn't have butter - my only guess is, there's a butter shortage somewhere. The eggs were from a carton- liquid eggs and not shell. The hashbrowns were slightly mushy, and the sausage was surprisingly good, a bit dry but edible. If I had to guess why this place is still in business I'd say it's because of Trees of Mystery. It right across the street and after half a day of hiking up there people are hungry and this place is convenient. I honestly wouldnt return. I was extremely disappointed. read more

We wanted to love this restaurant as much as we loved our stay at the Motel Trees next door and visit to the Trees of Mystery and Native American museum across the street. I hate being critical here, I really do, but it's only right. We ate there twice: dinner with high hopes, and breakfast because, "how long can bacon and eggs take?" my husband said. The service at dinner was, to quote another reviewer, "excruciatingly slow," and the strange part was that the restaurant only had six parties in it, including us, and only two groups came in at the same time (including us); some of the tables were finishing up. The servers spent the majority of their time talking behind the wall covered with plants (presumably it hides the kitchen). One poor guy at another table, who had waited forever for his food (like us) didn't have silverware. He asked for it, and the server went to get it and never came back! He finally got up and retrieved it himself. The food itself was so-so. I can't remember what we ordered. Breakfast was another adventure. We wanted to eat and get on the road (my husband gets hangry!), so he walked over just after opening time to join several other parties waiting outside. The door was locked. Eventually, it opened and we were told we could come inside but there was no one there to cook. O...kay. Everyone left and we went back to our room to get ready to leave. My hungry husband saw as we were getting in the car that the restaurant was fully open, so he went over while I finished packing. With only about three tables occupied, and a cook in the kitchen, our simple breakfasts took an eternity to arrive. It does NOT take that long to make eggs and toast! This restaurant is funky and cool and the servers were nice.
