I've eaten here several times and can't really say that the food has been anything but average at best except for the chicken wings. My last meal at the Belmont was the fish sandwich. It was grilled swai, which I think is similar to catfish. The fish itself was very good and had they put this on a hoagie roll it would have been an outstanding sandwich but they didn't...They put this relatively large filet of fish on this tiny hamburger roll and there was absolutely no way to eat this thing by hand. My wife had the burger which was average at best, also on a very small roll. Hey Belmont, if you're reading this, spring for some hoagie roll's. That fish sandwich would be a 9 if it were on a nice fresh hoagie roll. read more

I have visited this restaurant dozens of times in the 6 years it's been open as the Forest Hill Grill. Except for maybe the very first visit, I have always parked 'in the back' and come 'in the back' door. I, and everyone else I know, was encouraged to do so by the manager Steve Barzizza. There were bigger parking spots, it's easier to get in and out of that lot, etc. I came in the back door for my 50th birthday party with 40 friends. I have brought every visiting family member to this restaurant, through the back door. No problem. I've never been to this restaurant and not seen more people come in the back than the front door. It's what everyone does, and has done so for years. Unfortunately Steve B. had to resign his position a few years ago for health reasons, but I have continued to come to this restaurant, and park in the back and come in the back door. Until today. I/we arrived at 10:57 AM (according to my Fitbit) for brunch, and came in the back door; they don't open until 11am and I know that. I have often arrived a few minutes before opening time and never had a problem. The door was unlocked and I've used that door exclusively for 6 years and never had a problem. Once we got inside, I saw the current manager behind the bar and smiled at him. He yelled at me from across the restaurant 'WE'RE NOT OPEN' and I said 'I know' and pointed at my watch and said 'can we wait a few min...' and that was all I got out of my mouth. He pointed at the back door and screamed 'OUTSIDE' and then 'GO AROUND FRONT WITH EVERY BODY ELSE'. Our drive to the back lot did not take us past the front door so I was unaware there was anyone waiting outside. I certainly wasn't trying to cut in line; I was only doing what I (and literally hundreds of others) have done dozens of times, without ever ever having any incident or confrontation like I received today. (Once we left we did drive past the front door, and there were maybe 6 or 7 people waiting.) Mr. Manager, if you don't want customers using the back door, then you can A) lock the back door, or B) put up a sign that says 'employees only' or 'customers go around front please', or something to that effect. Anything has to be better than what you did today, which was to scream at us for coming in your back door, in a tone I wouldn't even so much as use with my dog. Mr. Manager, I wish you could have seen the traumatized and mortified looks on the faces of your employees that were standing behind you today. I can only hope that you do not explode at your employees like you do your customers, but by the looks on their faces today, I'm pretty sure you do. Get some help, you need it. read more

I like this Belmont location better than the East Memphis one. Maybe because it's a little bigger inside. I like the shrimp bisque and stuffed potato. It's a good place to go late night and they sometimes have live music. It's also a good family place if you go earlier in the evening. read more

Went for dinner with my wife about 5:00. Seating was fine. Had never been before ownership changed hands. Had a great waitress (Sydney). Got fried mushrooms as an appetizer. In a word: greasy. Tasted frozen. I got the Rueben sandwich. Meh, Not bad, but I've had one at Arby's that was as good. My wife got the hamburger. The bun was too small and the condiments kept spilling off. She's a picky eater and she ate it all, but ended up removing everything from the bun and ate it from the plate. Spent $32 plus tip. Probably won't be back. If you go, ask for Sydney. read more

I googled brunch on a Saturday and Forrest Hill Grill came up. So we decided to go there and tried it out. We were told that there's no brunch on Saturday, just Sunday. BIG disappointed since the website says Sat & Sun. Then I ordered a Mimosa which came with a lipstick on the glass (not mine) and my husband ordered Bloody Mary, which had an off taste to it. I used to like this place. However I took the family here to celebrate tonight and I will not be going back again for some time. If you are a gluten free person this place is not for you! I was very clear with my waitress that I did not want a bun with my burger....that I wanted potato skins instead of fries. Both fries and bun showed up! I ordered a special beer....it never showed up! I sent the food back but I am quite positive they just sent me back the same burger that refused. Nice atmosphere. Our waiter Matthew was great. He was having to run in circles because they didn't have enough help. The food was just okay, but nothing to call home about. The mash potatoes and corn was awful. The chicken fried chicken was okay it taste like it came out of the box but it still had some flavor. The French fries were really good. Lady at bar is not your normal sever. She was awesome. A guy said he was the owner, Steve, and sat us. Not sure who he is but took care of us. Drinks came fast, apps were as described. FOREST HILL GRILL is worth the drive! My wife and I eat out a lot. Not much eating-in recently because of covid19, however we often place orders in advance and pick up curbside. We happened to be in the area yesterday and decided to give it a try. Their reviews were encouraging. Even though we do not live near this restaurant, we will now become regulars! We both ordered from the "Basket" menu. My wife's favorite dish anywhere is fried shrimp. I ordered the chicken basket. The chicken tenders were as good as, actually maybe better, than Zaxby's and Abner's. I'm not a big french fries eater but probably enjoyed them more than the tenders. How they're cut and cooked is different from fries we've had from any other restaurant. My wife usually shares her dinner with me. Not last night! :  ) I'm guessing it will be her new go-to place for fried shrimp. The service was also great - from calling in the order to the pickup. It's rare that we take time to post restaurant reviews. If you're reading this and trying to decide where to eat, you should stop your search and go see for yourself. read more

Very nice place with good service however the food ("catfish" & onion rings) was cold when it arrived. The fish that is sold here as "Catfish" isn't real Catfish, it's Swai that looks like thin flat Chicken strips fried in old grease that needs to be replaced or at least cleaned and filtered. We tried this place again after swearing never to return because we had heard that the new owner was turning it around. I'm sorry to report that most of the things that drove us away remain unchanged, and what has changed is mostly not for the better. Let's get this out of the way first. The one improvement from the previous owner is that the dining area is noticeably cleaner. This is a welcome development because the amount of time you're sitting in it -- waiting for someone to deign to take your order, waiting for the still-molasses-slow-kitchen to get your food out, waiting for someone to deign to take your money-- is just as before. And speaking of money, while the food quality still ranges from adequate to poured right out of a can onto your plate, the prices have gone up. Dinner for our party of four -- fried shrimp basket, cheeseburger, mac and cheese, catfish po boy -- was $90 including tax and tip. That price included four beers, to be sure, but we regularly pay almost $30 less for a comparable meal at Huey's, and the food there is much better. I mean, it physically hurt to pay that much money for the food we got. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

I just. Can't. Two years elapsed between my first and second visits to this dive, and if twenty years passes until my next visit, it won't be too soon. Clearly there is a dearth of dining options in the Poplar/Forest Hill-Irene area, or this place wouldn't have such a cult following. First, the prices are sky high for what you get. An app, couple of beers, and couple of entrees could easily set you back $50 - in a bar! Service is slow, sometimes the cleanliness is suspect, and the cheese dip is really nacho cheese in a machine like you'd get at a sporting event. We like FHG about once a month, and enjoyed a visit last night. Good variety of dishes on the menu so nothing gets stale. The raw oysters were good. Wish they were a little larger, but don't know of too many places in the area where that's the case. The lobster roll contained about 3 oz of chunky flavorful meat, on a buttered hoagie loaf. My wife had grouper in a crawfish sauce. The fish was just about perfect; the sauce was a little strong for my taste, but still very enjoyable. The glazed donut bread pudding was as decadent as it sounds, and we had a pecan pie cheesecake. The cheesecake portion was light and creamy, with a flavorful pecan pie topping. Steve Barzizza, the owner, stopped by to check on us and chatted for a few minutes. He's always there, and works hard to make sure everything clicks for everyone. We went for brunch on Sunday. I got the pork tenderloin benedict...oh my SO GOOD! I substituted the fruit for the home frys, that was an excellent choice. They were hot, crispy and flavorful with the peppers and onions. He got the chicken tenders and fries basket. He loves those tenders, they are so fresh and you know they are made there and not shipped frozen and battered. Those "fries" are huge and fun. One day we'll leave room for dessert. read more

We had been wanting to try this place for a while since we live so close and always try to support local businesses. FInally stopped by only to be disappointed. The service was subpar, our server largely ignored us, likely because the owners were at a table next to us. The food was fine, but crazy expensive for what it was, $20 for a french dip with 3 onion rings. We requested the chili for the appetizer tamale's to kept on the side. It wasn't, probably because the chili was required to mask the taste of the tamale. The char grilled chicken with a creamed spinach side wasn't worth the $8.99. The chicken breast was much smaller than expected. Wife ordered the Deli Steak sandwich for $9.49...which came with no sides. Again, not worth it. Lastly, after the second refill of my Diet Coke, the waitress informed us that she would need to charge for additional refills. This was our second time here. Our first experience wasn't any better. Ordered their wings as an appetizer with sauce on the side with our drinks. 30 mins later the wings still haven't arrived, the waitress apparently didn't remember to say no sauce and they ended up having to remake the wings. 20 mins later we finally have our food but don't see our waitress again and actually have to follow her into the kitchen to get our check and pay. I had the Prime Rib (which is not usual, but a special for the night), and it was terrific as was the service. I am a regular at the Grill and although it is not white tablecloth dining, it is good honest food served by people who care about you and your experience there. I came here on a Saturday night, and it wasn't really busy. The food was okay, but what I really couldn't get over was the smell. There was an old musty smell when you walked in. This is a local 'bar and grill' type place. For a hamburger and fries it is okay but not better than other places of same type and prices are higher. I have been in a dozen times for lunch in the last year because it is convenient to my work. I always see a gentleman that is likely the owner/manager but he does not engage with the guests. Today, I ordered the blackened shrimp po-boy. Mostly bread, pickles, lettuce, and tomato, with 6 medium shrimp which are lost in the sandwich as opposed to the main ingredient. It is served open-faced so when you try to combine sides, it is just a mess. $12.50 and that doesn't include a side. Service is enthusiastic. If you want a beer at a local place with food being a secondary consideration this could be your place. read more

What a disappointment! The closest pub to our place has terrible food. The chicken livers were overcooked. The seafood gumbo tasted like a seafood soup in tomato sauce. I couldn't taste any kind of roux in it. My wife's fried catfish was mushy. We'll probably stop in for cocktails, but we're not gonna eat here. read more

This is a neighborhood gem as a lunch spot serving typical bar and southern comfort food. I love the grilled chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese. The chicken breast is marinated for 24 hours then it is seared on a hot grill. It is very flavorful, tender and moist. read more

Ordered fish and onion rings. Fish tasted like mud and the onion rings was under cooked. Parts of it were mushy. After bringing the check to the table and noticing that both fish and rings had only been bitten twice and more than 90% of the food was left the waitress cared less to ask the reason. I made it a point to tell her that the food was not what I expected and the fish tasted old and almost rancid. She was very unapologetic and was more concerned about a gratuity. Best burger in Memphis, although not perfect. The meat is pretty densely packed to be a five star burger, but it's nicely charred on the outside and has a good flavor, in spite of being a bit dry. The french fries, potato wedges really, are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with good potato flavor, which is just what you expect from a french fry. Edit: They've changed their burgers and they're now flat, rather than the rounded ball they used to be. The charred flavor has gone away, while still being densely packed and dry. My guess is that they started using pre-formed patties provided by their food service vendor, just like everyone else. I'm not going back. I'm downgrading them from 4 stars to 3. I would have docked another star, but their potato wedges are still good. Edit again (2/22/2015): The Poplar/Mendenhall store continues to serve the burger that I praised at this chain; it was the Forrest Hill store that had disappointed me. I restored the 4th star. It's still the best burger in Memphis, IMO, but the density is still an important flaw. read more
